My Circuit City rocks...I was able to take 3 sealed HD DVDs back that I got last year during the BOGO mess up. Never opened them....figured if I hadn't by now, I don't need to own them if I can still get full value back. 3 movies returned for $90 in store credit. Well worth it, I picked up 2 PSP games and still have $36 credit.
If anyone is in a similar situation, try Circuit City.

Saw copies of Hildago, Unbreakable and Coyote Ugly in the back. I'll be buying Coyote and Unbreakable next Tuesday.

Same here...I noticed they removed their endcap of HD-DVD titles and also moved their Blu-rays towards the back lcd-tv area.
Target also only has one column of HD-DVD's left.

Its a Calibration disk for your HDTV. Basically a walk through to help you get the best possible picture on your TV. Without paying someone $500 to do it for you
PrimeBane

It will get to you close to a $500 calibration job. There are still menus and such that a pro can access that we can't for that final tweak.

Was able to check out STAR.WARS.VI.RETURN.OF.THE.JEDI.12GB.1080P.WMVHD.5.1 this morning. Wow. The dark scenes in Jabba's lair were really, dark and didn't reflect any HD. But once you get outside it really shines. Got up close to the TV to see the pixels and you can tell it's nice high quality video. Episodes 1, 2 and 3 (the ones I listed yesrterday) all look amazing as well. I did notice some frames were lost during very fast motion scenes which was distracting but overall they are awesome.

Can you use the DVE disc to calibrate your cable TV picture as well? If I use the disc, am I just calibrating that particular input to look best with Blu-ray movies, or will it be the optimal settings for my TV overall?
I assume I may have to copy the settings over from one input to the other, but otherwise would that be correct?
HollandX
03-28-2008, 08:58 AM
I have no idea how it works with the disc. With Eliab, he went into my TV and set up the perfect calibration settings under the preset "Movie" video mode. So I just set all my inputs to "Movie" and that's now the calibrated input.

Right, but each one is seperate, so if Input 6 is adjusted at the "movie" level, Input 7 will have a "movie" level, but it will be the default, not the same. Same idea behind custom. Custom on Input 6 doesn't equal custom on Input 7.

Warner Announces V for Vendetta for Blu-ray
Warner Home Video has announced that they will release the highly anticipated Sci-Fi thriller 'V for Vendetta' for Blu-ray on May 20th. Video will be presented as 2.40:1 1080p VC-1 with 5.1 Dolby Digital audio track (no TrueHD track has been announced at this time, but is expected). While no extras have been announced at this time, you can expect that all the extras from the previous HD DVD release will fit easily on the BD-50.
This film was originally released on HD DVD, but was held back from Blu-ray release due to the lack of picture-in-picture support. Once support for PIP (BonusView) content was made mandatory, fans have been waiting eagerly for Warner to release those titles they initially held back. With this release of 'V for Vendetta', Warner is making good on their promise to bring all of their HD DVD exclusive titles to the Blu-ray format.
Extras on the HD DVD include the In Movie Experience (IME) PIP commentary, four featurettes ("Designing the Near Future", "Remember, Remember: The Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder Plot", "England Prevails: V for Vendetta and the New Wave of Comics", and "Freedom! Forever!: Making of V for Vendetta"), the Saturday Night Live digital short, Cat Power montage, and theatrical trailers.

I'd like to give a big thanks to both PrimeBane and grif32 for saving me the time of reading lots of avsfoum threads. PrimeBane helped me pick out my TV last year, has answered my questions regarding gaming systems, helped me pick out my receiver about 2 weeks ago, and he also gave me a suggestion of some speakers to look at. grif32 helped me the rest of the way speaker-wise with suggestions on speakers and a subwoofer, all of which I ended up purchasing. Report: Blu-ray Disc Sales Impacting DVD
Fri Mar 28, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
Thanks to the demise of HD DVD and increased Blu-ray retail momentum, next-gen disc sales are starting to carve out a bigger slice of the home video pie, a new report suggests.
According to an analysis of Nielsen VideoScan First Alert numbers conducted by Home Media Magazine, Disney's Blu-ray chart-topper 'No Country for Old Men' drew 9.8 percent of its total unit sales from Blu-ray during its first five days in stores.
Faring even better was Fox's 'Hitman,' which saw 12.6 percent of total customers taking home the Blu-ray version during its first five days.
By comparison, high-def percentages during the height of the format war rarely topped 2 to 3 percent of a title's total disc sales. (Even 2007's biggest high-def seller, the HD DVD-only release of 'Transformers,' generated little more than 4 percent of its total unit sales from the next-gen version.)
Adams Media Research analyst Tom Adams cited a newfound sense of confidence among consumers as the main reason for Blu-ray's recent siege on DVD market share, as many of those previously waiting out the format war may now be willing to dip their toes in the Blu waters.
"Before, there was a tendency to play it safe and stick with the standard DVD," Adams said. "But now there's no longer anything to worry about."
Adams also expects to see Blu-ray disc sales continue to boom throughout the rest of calendar year, fueled by increasing penetration of Blu-ray hardware and sales of Sony's Blu-ray-driven PlayStation 3.

I think you will see the price of Blu-Ray movies go down eventually so they can compete with DVD. New Release DVD's are from what I have seen $19.99. Blu Ray new realeases are $29.99. So you are paying $9.99 for higher quality which makes sense.
Blu Ray could come down to $24.99 per new release but you wont get higher quality for the same price of regular DVD. Only way we will ever see Blu-Ray at $19.99 for new releases is when DVD's drop to $14.99 or so.
btw there are movies for Blu-Ray that come out in the $14.99-$19.99 range they just are older movies that were transfered to Blu-Ray.

New Release's at my CC, Targets are always $13.99 or $14.99 for the first week then jump up to $21.99. No more $19.99 so BR is not far off.
I wish they would do the same for BR on the first week. Lower the price then raise it after that back to normal pricing.

I rarely pay more than $15.99 for a dvd. If I miss it the week it comes out then I wait until its $9.99 (which only takes a couple of months)
I know Blu-Ray looks great. But as long as people can buy 2 new dvds for the price of 1 BR movie and watch those dvds on their upconverting dvd player, its just not worth the money.
When new BRs are released at $19.99, then they may make up some ground.

I completely agree, especially when you can rent any of these movies for $5 in the store. If you're a part of Blockbuster Online/NetFlix, it's even cheaper. The comparison of paying $9.99 for a higher quality picture and sound makes sense when comparing BluRay to SD-DVD, but the problem is paying freakin' $20 a pop for a SD-DVD that you have to watch 4+ times to make your money count. With the advent of through-the-mail rental services, you can re-rent a movie you want to watch it again and have it 2 days later, making it even less attractive to purchase DVDs.
I come from a mindset of not buying movies, so I'm obviously biased, but food for thought.

$6 to rent a movie is freakin ridiculous, man. I haven't rented a movie in a good 6 months... hell, if a person is still into the antique ;) that is DVD they could almost buy that movie previously viewed for a little more if they wait long enough. I used to rent DVD's all the time, Blockbuster gave me a gold card because I rented over 100 movies every year for three years, now that's depressing... all these movies I've seen but have nothing to show for. Netflix may be cheaper, but it still sucks.
Nobody I know other than my parents (thanks to me and my dads b-day a while back) have made the step up, which I really don't mind. I like knowing my movies are better than theirs, and if I have one they don't - they can't borrow it. :p

I look at it this way. I do not go to the movies to often anymore. I drop around $50 for the GF and I and the little one to go to the movies. Way to much money.
Now I just buy it on BR for $25 and I save money plus I can watch it as many times as I want and not worry about others during the movie. Plus we invite friends and family over to watch the movie as well.

CC online has really great prices for HD DVD I would print out some on-line then take them as well..
CC wont price match their online prices tho.
They had Dawn of the Dead HD DVD for $24.99 plus 50$ off
On-line they had the same movie for $14.99. Some people are reporting that CC will match their online prices then take 50% of that. Unreal deal. Mine wouldnt. Would be some great deal for $7.50 a movie.

The people over at AVs and HighDefdigest are saying it's almost impossible to get them to match the online price and do 50% off. If that's the case, I say pass on the sale unless there's a title you REALLY want.
$12.50 - $15 for an HD DVD is really not a deal anymore, imo.
Just got back from digging through the bin at my Circuit City, was hoping to find a Blade Runner or Justice League, but no such luck. They have a lot of titles still, but like Jaylis is right, 12-15 for a HD DVD just doesn't feel like much of a deal anymore.

Why wouldn't they just do the B1G2 already and clear out now...they'd probably make more money stocking the space with DVDs sooner rather than later. Why does CC play these stupid games with the sales? The only one I want is The Breakfast Club, but I'd almost rather pay the same amount online for it than give CC my money if they're going to jerk people around with the sales. From what I understand, they totally screwed with people with the lower online prices and then in-store BOGO prices.

Band of Brothers Blu-ray in Works for 2008
HBO In the latest issue of Home Media Magazine, writer John Latchem interviewed Sofia Chang, Senior Vice President of Marketing for HBO Video with regards to the upcoming release of the mini-series 'John Adams' for DVD (no Blu-ray release has been announced at this time). At the conclusion of the interview, he asked when the popular 'Band of Brothers' mini-series would see Blu-ray release. She replied that a version was in the works for release later this year.
Currently, the only way to see 'Band of Brothers' in high definition is to import the now discontinued HD DVD releases from Japan (which were released by Toshiba). Now that HBO is readying the set, those highly anticipating the set (yours truly included) await anxiously for an official release date.

You're right that they'd probably best serve the customer by just doing the B1G2 right off the bat, but they're a company, so they know that most people won't bother coming back to do a price correction once that sale hits. So they might as well make some money now if possible.
I'd still rather go to CC than BB since the latter has just completely removed HD-DVDs from their store. Also since BB didn't have a uniform discount across all stores, CC is the best way to go for B&M stores.

Yeah Target is actually mentioned in one of the early posts and thats funny because thats where I started my plunge into high def. I was jumping back and forth between HD DVD or Blu-ray forever and then one day I went into Target and saw $15 Blu-ray disks...knowing that I was going to be getting a PS3 the next week I bought basically everything I saw. Hello everyone,
Don't know if this has been mentioned in this thread yet. I just found out about it when i purchased a TV. You can save an extra 5% off items using Amazon.com "Gold Box Trick." Not sure if it applies to all items, but I was able to save $20 on a new PS3.
Basically, the Gold Box Trick is to get Amazon to recommend items that you want, then those items will be put in your Quick Picks with an additional 5% discount.

Before the CC sale started, I was able to return sealed HD DVDs to CC for full value, but only the ones that had a CC sticker on them. As far as your situation....my only thought would be maybe there are a few FYE's left that'll accept trade in, or Wal-Mart if they carry that title you're trying to return.

I got Coyote Ugly incoming from Amazon and I plan on picking up Alvin and the chipmunks and Unbreakable when I get off work. I hope my Walmart has Unbreakable so I don't have to run up to best buy also tonight. Its amazing how much better movies look on blu ray. My wife wasn't a believer until she watched the Nancy Drew Dvd I had got her and said it looked like total crap compared to blu. Its going to be hard not to pickup titles coming out on dvd and not blu, because I will still want the movie, but standard dvd quality sux now. I watched I am legend and Disturbia this weekend and was completly blown away with how it looks.

That's not too cool to offer movies for certain prices, have people show interest in them and then offer and then sell them as a lot. You could have made a few of us happy with some good deals on movies instead of selling to just one. But whatever.....

Well....I'm really disheartened that you feel this way....really.
Especially after i pointed out the fact that preference would be given to the person who buys the most. In this case..."the most" meant "all of them".
If this is how I need to sell them to make sure that I sell every one of them...and not just the popular titles...while getting stuck with the crap everyone seems to have and nobody seems to want....then so be it.
Sorry it wasn't "cool" or "was pretty weak". I'd much rather have sold many separate titles to many different boardmembers and had to deal with the hassle and extra costs of sending out multiple packages. And who's the selfish one here
oaktown2000
04-01-2008, 12:36 PM
Besides....if it'll make either of you two feel a little better, previous to taking the entire lot....the buyer requested 5 titles...many of which both of you wanted....so he would have received preference anyways.

It's "forgettable".Not a bad movie to watch if you've never seen it...but not something with a high replay value. It is after all, a movie about a "race"....and I'm sure you can surmise who wins.
Although I'm sure on a good sound set-up....the hoofs of the horses thundering along would be worth the price of $19.87 alone, given the SQ is up to par :)

She has redeeming qualities outside of her voice, so they can share. :D
The Led Zeppelin and Dave Matthews would be worth checking out. I don't listen to much in the way of mainstream music, but I enjoy both of those bands.

John Legend
Queen
Justin Timberlake
Shakira
Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple
Santana
Celine Dion
Elton John
David Gilmore
AC/DC
Dave Matthews
Nine Inch Nails
Destiny's Child
Toto
Tony Bennett
Thats all I saw from looking at the release schedule quickly, there may be more. I will say if you are even mildly a fan of any of the acts up above I'd suggest their concert DVD. The sound is amazing on the ones I've heard.
I'll have to check netflix for the NIN, Led Zep and AC/DC ones. Thanks for the list.

lol...yeah...you could put it that way as well

That is a definite no. Shakira...ok, that's one thing...Celine Dion....that's something else entirely. I can't stand her music or her "I'm French-Canadian...I'm the greatest thing the Vegas strip has ever seen" attitude.
What's up with those damn Canadians, Scott? ;)

Brian Adams is a hero among men. I refuse to badmouth anyone who only helped make the movie Robin Hood even more bad@$$ then it already was.
We'll take Brian Adams you can have Dave Matthews and his entourage of stoned college kids with v-neck tshirts, khaki shorts, and sandals. Oh wait I almost forgot a hemp necklace, they need to have hemp somewhere on them because hemp is natural much like what they smoke.

So I got my five free HD-DVDs in the mail today but got two that I didnt order(which means I didnt get two I did order).
I got Babel, Full Metal Jacket, The Frighteners, Born on the Fourth of July, and Waist Deep.
The first three I ordered but didnt order BotFoJ and Waist Deep. I had originally ordered The Thing and another movie I cant quite remember.
Also I got two copies of Full Metal Jacket on HD-DVD now so whoever wants a copy lmk. If you got extras of HD-DVDs from this and you want to get rid of one we can do a trade or whatever.

So I'm sitting here watching Predator.1987.Bluray.VC1.720P.5.1.WMV-NOVO.nfo to get an idea of how the US Blu-ray will look like. Definitely a lot of underlying grain. But it's very small and gives the film a nice look. Some scenes it's more obvious than the others. Color has definitely benefited the most from this upgrade. The greens in the jungle are vibrant and crisp. I was going to buy this Blu-ray regardless but this eases my mind about the grain issues.

That sucks....here's a link showing the German Blu Ray vs the DVD
Not a huge difference...and there is a lot of grain....but I'll still pick it up.
Shots 2 and 4 show a marked improvement.

CC had crap left for the 50% sale. Suprised they had so little with the pathetic deal. All their movies were still $30-$35 regular price. So it really wasnt that great of a deal. Still $15 or more for a movie. Oh well I bought nothing. Liar Liar and Happy Gilmore were the only options and I chose to avoid paying $15 each for them.
