That sucks....here's a link showing the German Blu Ray vs the DVD
Not a huge difference...and there is a lot of grain....but I'll still pick it up.
Shots 2 and 4 show a marked improvement.

Thanks for the link Oak. It was on my buy list but I'm just going to wait on it now. Wasn't that impressed by the upgrade.

Anyone in here still looking for a Wii? I have a new one for sale. Same price as I offered Grif the other day, which I think was $325 or something like that.

Not surprising considering both are mpeg2 encodes from before the Fox BD holdout. :(
Don't know about commando, but also consider the source material for Predator. The steam and humidity of the jungle shoot caused all sorts of issues and havoc with the cameras and film for that movie. Yea, you can clean up "dirty" film....but I think there'd only be so much you could do with "damaged" film.

No kidding. Especially when Arnold drops from the jungle into the water. That is a horrible piece of film. Looks like it was stock footage or something. Really bad.

Has anyone heard anything about the new Samsung plasmas yet? I was all ready to go, money in hand, to buy last year's FP-T5084 model, until I heard about the new PN50A550. It has a higher contrast ratio, but the rest of the specs look to be identical. Just wondering if anyone has seen one in person, or has at least heard some reviews. There's nothing yet over on the AVS forums.
Thanks in advance for any info.

My 2 cents... unless you REALLY have your heart set on a Sammy, take a good hard look at the Panasonic Viera plasmas. Overall they are a better set. :)

Oh no! Don't give me yet another option to consider!!!....... :(........:D Thanks bro. I'll check them out.
But since you've already opened up Pandora's Box, could you give me a quick rundown on why you feel this way? Frankly, I can look at specs all day, but they're just #'s. I need to know what it all means in the long run.

I did a lot of reading before I bought my first plasma in 2006. Like you, I was eying up the Sammys and nearly pulled the trigger on one.
Reasons I went Panasonic:
1. Other than Pioneer (which are very pricey) they make the highest rated plasma panels in the industry. In fact, Pioneer will quit making panels and will buy them from Panasonic for future sets. That says a lot for these Panny panels.
2. Customer service: Panasonics Viera Concierge service is second to none. I had a single dead pixel on my screen. They sent a tech out and authorized a brand new tv. :D
3. Panasonic makes the most burn-in resistant panel in the industry. While burn-in is a very minor factor in today's plasmas it does still occur over time. With a Panasonic burn-in won't even be an afterthought.
4. Every site worth a grain of salt ranks Panny plasmas highly. Same goes for the tech message boards. They'll always recommend the Pioneer Kuros first, but they tend to be pricey, thus the Panasonics give you a better bang for your buck.
Hope that helps :)

I agree with Prime. Samsung makes great LCD's. For plasma's go with Panny or Pioneer.
Had my Panny Plasma for over 5 years now and still going strong. No burn in or any problems. Knock on wood.

a question for the audiophiles...my mother in law picked up a Samsung 32" 720p LCD (same one I bought for gaming) and form some reason there is a high pitched squeel coming from the back of the tv and is more noticeable when you turn the volume down. Any thoughts???

Is it running through a receiver to speakers, or are you just talking about the TV speakers? If it's just the TV there may be something wrong with it. I've never heard of a distortion or high pitched tone being more noticeable as the volume is turned DOWN on a TV. But I'm not the authority on TV audio troubleshooting...someone else might have a better idea what might be causing the problem.

Have her take it back... if it's past the return date, have her call Samsung support.
No point ef*** around with electronics... if it doesn't work, get it fixed or replaced within the warranty/return period.

Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360 still in the works?
The word out of Digi Times today is that the Taiwanese manufacturerLite-On landed a contract to supply Microsoft with Blu-Ray disc drives to be used in the Xbox 360 product line and the first major shipment is to be in late 2008. Microsoft is currently not commenting on it but I am inclined to believe it for a number of reasons.
This is quite believable to me since Lite-On are already a supplier of optical disc drives to the Xbox 360 and Microsoft has always kept their options open technically and politically regarding bringing a Blu-Ray player to the Xbox 360. There are some media outlets that are going to far as to conclude that there is going to be an internal Blu-Ray drive in a future Xbox 360 and I am not likely to believe that as much as I believe that there is an external Blu-Ray player in the works.
Here are the main reasons why I think the eventual Blu-Ray player for the Xbox 360 is going to be external. The Jasper Xbox 360 motherboard is already well in the testing phase and they are putting on the final touches before ramping up manufacturing. I don't see the timing working out for it to be internal.
An internal Blu-ray drive would dramatically increase the cost of the Xbox 360 system and Microsoft is working hard to make the cost of the hardware as low as possible to reach a wide market. The phenomenal success of the Wii has them spooked and they want the cost of the Xbox 360 systems to go down as low as possible. They have never done a complete separate motherboard design and they would need to have extra hardware for Blu-Ray playback. Technically there is no difference between the Xbox 360 Arcade and the Xbox 360 Elite once you take all the external accessories off it. They made money off every external HD-DVD player sold and that business model would work out perfectly for a Blu-ray player. The cost of the a Blu-Ray drive is about $80 more than a DVD drive and I think it would be extremely unlikely that they would want to increase the cost of the 360. However an external Blu-Ray drive priced the same as a HD-DVD drive before the clearance would work great.
I do know that here are several external accessories are in the works for the Xbox line and external accessories has been a very monetarily successful market for Microsoft. A external Blu-ray drive would mean a new accessory on the store shelves in time for the holiday shopping season 2008. They already have millions of existing Xbox 360 in the hands of paying customers and I think there is a greater market opportunity for an external product. I have not had much faith in the past declarations that movies over Xbox Live marketplace were going to be the only option for movies on the Xbox. There is just not the bandwidth, storage space or content licensing opportunities for that to be a viable alternative to movies on an optical disc.
I also don't think Sony is going to go out of their way to prevent this since they are not the only company in the Blu-Ray group and they have a lot to gain if their competitors over at Microsoft started to use the movie disc format that they risked the Playstation brand to promote. Blu-Ray is a huge risk for Sony and they want EVERYBODY to use it, even Xbox owners.
I am about 95% certain that we will see an external Blu-Ray player for the Xbox 360 before Christmas 2008. We will never ever see Xbox games on a Blu-Ray disc format and Microsoft has been very clear about that. Microsoft does not want fans to choose a PlayStation 3 over an Xbox 360 just to get a Blu-Ray player. By offering an external Blu-Ray accessory there would have an alternative on the market when Joe Blow consumer eventually wants to get a Blu-Ray player this Winter.

I think Microsoft is too late, but they have no choice but to join the Blu-Ray crowd now to avoid losing out on future sales. I also read in a similar article posted on avsforum that you'd need a different Xbox360 version that can handle the Blu-Ray add-on.
Don't get me wrong, I love my 360 and think it's a great gaming system. I was smart enough to wait until they worked out the kinks, and also for the HDMI version. However, they've created a PR nightmare that seems to be overlooked, especially if the rumored Blu-Ray add-on requires you to purchase a different version:
1) Verison 1 without HDMI and Blu-Ray
2) Version 2 with HDMI and without Blu-Ray
3) Version 3 with HDMI and Blu-Ray
That's 3 different units to catch up to the PS3, and unless they go with a very small HD, they probably won't match the 40GB price point either. If you're still in the market for a NextGen gaming system, there's very little reason to go with the Xbox360 unless you're a huge Halo fan, or if most of your friends already have a 360.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed this is true... I'd much rather have an addon than to have to go out and purchase a standalone or 2nd PS3 for another BD player.
And before anyone says that it won't be as good, I don't need HD sound or 1080p where it would be going.

Believe it or not...I think this partly played into the minds of consumers as to the colors. Red is commonly a more associated aggresive color that I think was a subconscious turn-off while blue is more pleasant to the eyes and which one tends to associate with the sky and sea...I'm totally being serious here.

Yeah some movies just made more sense on different formats.
I thought American Gangster would look foolish on Blu-ray. Phantom Of the Opera looks 50 times better on HD DVD then it does on Blu-ray. V for Vendetta was absolutely perfect on HD DVD. But then on the other side of things I thought 2001 a Space Odyssey looked foolish on HD DVD. Same for Happy Feet, Terminator, Blades of Glory, etc. Lord knows Ice Age would have looked like a case tragedy had it come out on HD DVD.
Now that HD DVD is out of the way I'd like to see more customizable cases that make the cover art look better. If the Hulk movie comes out on Blu-ray why not issue a standard Blu-ray case but make it green. After a few months when HD DVD utterly disappears from shelves I think studios can actually get away with diversifying their case color to help improve the looks of the cover art.

Yeah I honestly thought the Maroon cases looked absolutely awful. Some movies would make the maroon cases shine. V for Vendetta really sticks out in my mind as a movie that used the maroon case perfectly. But overall I was just never a fan of the color. Blue on the other hand is my favorite color, I can't say that was a deciding factor in picking Blu-ray but it was definately a huge bonus.

I am not sure that it will ever happen that they take the blu-ray part off of the cases, until there arent DVDs around anymore either. Which wont happen for a long time. I could just see that causing problems with the Reality TV watching crowd buying Blu-ray discs not knowing they wont play on their DVD player. Then getting all mad and complaining about it.

I know of a Sony BDP-S300 that's Profile 1.0, and also can't bitstream or decode any of the HD codecs (TrueHD, DTS-MA). I'm assuming there's not much difference between S300 and the S301. Sonystyle.com has a refurbished model for $290ish.

I don't think MS will include BD in the system... IMO it will be an external player like the HD DVD addon. There would be just too much redesign work to include an HD optical drive.
Hell, the PS3 can't even grab information off it fast enough... wonder why you have that 5 GB instand with new PS3 games? You can thank the low data transfer rate of current BD drives for that.
BD or another high capacity disk will be part of the 3rd generation XBoxes.

Yeah, I didn't mean to infer that MS would actually embed it into the 360. Sorry for not making that clear. My main point was that MS has hurt its customers by not having a finished product from day 1, like Sony has.

Hahaha.
1. No true HDMI 1.3a port
2. Blu-ray specs still not finalized
3. my fave: NO DAMN IR RECEIVER
4. BD drive not fast enough to pull data for latest games (ever wonder why you have a 5 GB install to the hdd for a newer game?)
1) This is true, although 1.3a wasn't out on anything at the time was it?
2) That's the fault of the BluRay spec, not the PS3. Sony knew the PS3 had an ethernet connection, so it was upgradeable from day 1, which overcomes this limitation.
3) This is doesn't mean it's not finalized, it just means Sony made a very poor decision on the console/remote protocol. :)
4) Same as #3.
I guess I don't view these 4 items as obvious omissions such as no HDMI connection, and then choosing the wrong NextGen DVD format, although I'll give credit to MS for making it an external drive. I view them moreso as poor decisions. The PS3 does have several versions, but they're all different hard drive sizes to offer more choices. They do seem to have a backwards compatibility issue, however.
I did notice my mistake until now...the Circuit City one is a S300 and the Sam's Club is a S301..I think the S300 has a new model coming ot this month
Yes, the S350.

^^^ Don't expect them anytime soon. At least not a major one at B&M. JR just had a good one - $7.99 for some titles. I'd imagine Amazon will come up with something knocking a few bucks off some catalog titles every once in a while.

which of those were promised with the hardware?
1) This is true, although 1.3a wasn't out on anything at the time was it?
HDMI 1.3 was made out to be a VERY big deal even before the PS3 came out. It's was praised by industry and fans alike as the PS3 was supposed to be futureproof... that didn't last long.
2) That's the fault of the BluRay spec, not the PS3. Sony knew the PS3 had an ethernet connection, so it was upgradeable from day 1, which overcomes this limitation.
No matter what the fanboys say, Blu-ray is Sony... and Sony rushed an unfinished product to market. Luckily the rest of the PS3 can allow for the newer profiles. It's sad that can't be said for the rest of the current BD players on the market.

No one is saying the PS3 is the end-all-be-all or completely finished. Sure it doesn't come with a robot cook, or ballistic missiles, or a fortune teller, or a mystical half orc warlord with lawn mowing abilities, or a guardian siberian tiger....but hell it comes with a HD, wireless internet, a Blu-ray player, and gaming capabilities. Don't get me wrong I had my heart set on a 1.5b guardian siberian tiger but what the PS3 ended up delivering on wasn't a bad consolation prize.
I get where Smartassboiler is coming from the PS3 ain't perfect and certainly isn't 100% done but you get a hell of alot inside of one box without having to Frankenstein it to death.

PS3 is a great machine. I use my 360 more but the PS3 plays my blu-rays and mlb the show 08. I love it for that. Only 2 things I would change.
1. I wish I could have gotten the white ps3 when I made the purchase.
2. Wish you could turn it on like the Xbox 360. Sucks having to use the Force to turn mine own. Using the Force for such miniscule things could lead to the dark side :(

I believe my parents are moving into the HD world as a Christmas present for both of them, so I'll be in here asking all sorts of questions around that time. Since I've had my TV for a bit, I'm a little behind on some TV stuff, other than casual info.

It's odd that I'm taking the side of one gaming system despite owning the other one, but that decision was based on how many friends of mine own each unit. Plus I have more faith in MS than Sony in terms of future online content. I simply view the PS3 as more of a finished product than the Xbox360 as of their release on the first day. That's all. :)

Blu-ray introduces it's initial 3D optional disk and the first movie to try it out the absolutely only option that can be purchased at first to test out this awesome feature is Hannah Montana in Concert. Absolutely no one else thought "hmm maybe we could try it on something that people over the age of 12 would actually be interested in".
Sure oaktown will "buy it for his wife" but the rest of us who want a tiny low budget sneak peak at 3D in 1080p are forced to buy into the most annoying phenomenon since Furbies.

Thats what I don't know. I know the 3D tech that Mitsubishi has been working on doesn't require glasses, but I can't imagine that tech is ready as of this Hannah Montana release so thats why I'm assuming it's a sneak peak at what it COULD look like and I would guess the release will come with glasses.
But who knows, they really don't say much of anything.

Yes I think the sale went really well. I live in a small town and not to many people buy HD DVD or BR and for them to be cleaned out tells me the sell went well everywhere.
Talking to people over at AVS they said their CC sold out in a couple days. Sad to see it go but what can you do.
Honestly I didnt think the 50% was a great sale at all. But it shows you how well even crappy titles will sale for the right price.

I had to leave quickly before I bought a TV! They had a Panasonic 720p Plasma on sale for $999 and if I signed up for direct TV I would get $300 off!!! I had to run out cause I had my CC card halfway out of my wallet!

Unfortunately I cant watch it because the tv screen was completely cracked. The delivery guys took it back. It was the new Panasonic Plasmas 42" and bought it from Amazon at a really good price - $1300.46. I don't feel too safe about ordering another one from them.
I'm going out in a couple of hours and buy it directly from the store. I'm considering Electronics Expo (based in jersey ) http://www.electronics-expo.com/

Electronics Expo is solid. I ordered a subwoofer from them via Amazon, and they shipped very quickly and with no problems.

Went through a few movies tonight....here are my mini-reviews.
Breakfast Club HD DVD: Was expecting a little more detail even though I knew the transfer was going to lean more toward the upcoverted DVD side. Very soft. Grainy throughout, which didn't bother me. Colors are much more vivid and rich than the DVD.
Cars blu-ray: Fun movie, even though it was a complete rip-off of Doc Hollywood. As you'd expect with the CGI, it's all eye-candy.
28 Days Later: Eh, what are you gonna do....shot on standard definition. At least there's no DVD blur-effect on the 62" TV. Sound is pretty crisp, bear in mind my setup is just 5.1. Got this one last year for 50% off.

I just finished watching the DVE disk, I couldnt understand a single thing he said. My picture looks great to me. When i get extra cash Ill just hire someone to cal. it for me. Also got the first $200 of the $550 from BB
I thought it was very easy to following and it gives you test patterns to adjust your picture which are great to use.
Try watching it a few times.
I thought the samething with my PQ but made a few adjustments and now the PQ really pops. More 3D with BR and HD DVD DVD's now.
I notice turning down the Sharpness to Zero made a big difference for me as well.

Just finished watching Next. What a great movie. Ending was abrupt and you have to assume what happens. Other then that though it was very well done. Nicholas Cage was fantastic in it. He is very underrated as an actor. He is just made for action movies.
Oh yeah Jessica Biel is hot! :)
I liked this movie as well.
Biel in HD = Heaven...

Watched both Underworld movies last night (Sorry Chugga, Evolution rocks).
Both are basically the same PQ transfer. Very detailed, not much in terms of color since the movie is all blues and blacks.

I'm looking at A Scanner Darkly to rent from Netflix, but I have a question for those who have seen it. This is what the description says at Netflix, but at the end it looks like it gives away a big part of the film. Does that last line ruin the whole point of the film?
Keanu Reeves shoulders another futuristic role in director Richard Linklater's sci-fi thriller based on Philip K. ****'s novel. Working as an undercover cop in a world where almost everyone is addicted to Substance D -- which produces split personalities in its users -- Fred Arctor (Reeves) sets up an elaborate sting to nab a notorious drug runner named Bob. But little does Fred know that "Bob" is … his alter ego.

No, that won't ruin the ending. FYI, the movie is pretty slow. Pure eye candy though PQ wise.

Never seen LOTR. Not the type of movie I could get into. Blade 2 now thats a movie. Hopefully all 3 of those come out on Blu-Ray sometime.
I wish my cable provider gave me SpikeTVHD. They are running Star Wars 1-6 in HD. Would love to have those DVR'd until I can buy them on Blu-Ray as well.
Blu-Ray won the "war" now its time for them to bring out some heavy hitting classics :)
Oh yeah Back to the Future looks good in HD so they should put those out as well lol.

Do you have the Amazon Prime membership as well? I love it.
For anyone who isn't familiar with it, it's a $78 annual fee. It includes free 2 day shipping on all items that Amazon themselves has in stock (not via independent sellers through Amazon), plus there's obviously no sales tax on Amazon either. Given the very competitive prices that Amazon has, it's a really nice setup for a fairly nominal charge.

HDD Movie Review for Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story:
Video: 3 stars
Audio: 4 stars
(out of 5 stars)
Review of the first ever BD-Live portion:
'Walk Hard' is making high-def history as Sony's first BD-Live-enabled title. Accessing the content is easy (on a PlayStation 3 with the latest firmware upgrade, that is) -- simply select the BD-Live option from the Special Features menu, and the content will begin loading. Download times are slow, however -- it took about 3 minutes or so the first time, and less than a minute on future visits. Not terrible, but hardly speedy. As for the content itself, it's not that extensive, but this is clearly a test-case title -- BD-Live works (albeit slowly), which is certainly the biggest news.
* Featurettes (SD, 9 minutes) - The main goodies are a trio of vignettes starring the character of Derek Stone (Bill Hader), as a "Coxologist" who analyzes three famous Dewey Cox songs ("Royal Jelly," "Mulatto" and "Midget Man"). Each segment runs about 3 minutes, and surprisingly, are presented in standard-definition only. It's certainly not a boon to BD-Live to have non-HD content, but likely the reason is the long download times. In addition to the activation delay just to get the BD-Live feature up and running, each "Coxologist" segment required about another 4 minutes per clip to download -- quite an aggravation, as Sony has not provided a streaming option (i.e., you have to download the whole thing in one shebang). Clearly, BD-Live is just getting started.
* Theatrical Trailers (SD) - Sony has also provided access to nine (at presstime) trailers and previews for other movie titles, including such upcoming Blu-ray releases as 'Untraceable,' 'Gattaca' and the upcoming 'Men in Black.' Unfortunately, there is again no streaming option -- be prepared to wait several minutes for the download to finish, and it's standard-def to boot. Quite frankly, I could watch all of the trailers online a heck of a lot quicker. If BD-LIve is really going to take off, Sony and the other studios need to get this content to us quicker, and in full HD.

Im already boned then.......Dewey Cox was one of the pre-orders I picked up back when Columbia House had their BOGO on Blu Rays. If figured you couldn't go wrong with getting pre-releases as part of a BOGO deal. I also pre-ordered The Golden Compass.....so hopefully that one doesn't suck as well.

Discovery Channel's 'Human Body' Coming to Blu-ray
Mon Apr 07, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
http://www.highdefdigest.com/images/post/5/5570/original.jpeg
The Discovery Channel is set to go where no high-def release has gone before with the Blu-ray debut of its controversial four-part series 'Human Body: Pushing the Limits this July.'
Taking viewers across continents to introduce them to people who have pushed their bodies to the max, 'Human Body' uses CGI technology and hi-tech camera work to examine their subjects' physical ordeals in vivid detail -- both externally and internally. (Eeek!)
Image will present the complete four-episode, 180-minute series on a BD-50 dual-layer disc in 1080p video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio.
There are no announced supplemental features.
Suggested retail price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.98

My onslaught of boring movies finally ended when I put American Gangster in, loved it. Denzel Washington vs Russell Crowe was awesome. PQ and AQ, no complaints...
