Man, HDD supposedly switched over and let Internet Brands takeover their forum hosting and now they're down again. Anyone else notice the only HD DVD reviews they have been doing are mainly imports. LOL

it's all we got left :(

Universal joining Blu-ray bandwagon in the summer

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Universal Studios, once Hollywood's top backer of the doomed HD DVD video format, will soon release all its new videos on the victorious Blu-ray rival at the same time as its standard DVDs.

The studio is set to announce Thursday that the program will kick off in the summer with the recent box office flop "Doomsday."

Universal's Blu-ray strategy includes plans to release about 40 titles in the second half of the year.

Among them are the studio's five big feature films of the summer, including "The Incredible Hulk," with Edward Norton, William Hurt and Liv Tyler; "Wanted," an action thriller starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie; "Hellboy II: The Golden Army"; "Mamma Mia," the adaptation of the musical starring Meryl Streep; and the sequel "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor," with Brendan Fraser and Jet Li.

Universal officially will enter the Blu-ray market July 22 with a trio of films from its "Mummy" action-adventure franchise: "The Mummy" and "The Mummy Returns," both starring Fraser, and the spinoff "The Scorpion King," with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Also planned for domestic Blu-ray before the year is up are the catalog titles "American Gangster," "Knocked Up," "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Miami Vice," "End of Days," "U-571" and "Land of the Dead," among others.

Universal had been HD DVD's biggest studio backer ever since the next-generation optical disc format came to market in April 2006. But when Toshiba pulled the plug on the format in February, the studio wasted no time switching its allegiance to Sony's Blu-ray.

So I watched Blade Runner (theatrical version) last night. Should I even bother watching any of the other versions?

As much as I tried to like it since it was a sci-fi flick and Harrison Ford was in it, I just couldn't. That final chase and fight was just painfully boring and dull to watch. And this movie was a prime example of why voice-over narration sucks.

Yes, definitely watch one of the other versions, they don't have the narration. I watched the voice-over version and definitely wasn't too impressed, but I liked the versions without a lot better.

I had all the Mummy movies on HD DVD as well but I'll buy them again if the audio is better. Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 isn't going to cut it now. Give us TrueHD, PCM or DTS-HD MA.

DD Plus, when done correctly, is just fine as we've seen on several HD movies to date.

Remember a little film called Transformers with a DD+ track? Best of the year I seem to recall from several sources. ;)

I'd be VERY surprised if any of Uni's titles are anything more than the HD DVD encodes with a new BD-J generic menu. Any HDi special feature will most likely be stripped and not recreated. Only day and date releases will get any sort of special treatment.

SBrooks1

The only reason why TrueHD wasn't used on Transformers was because of the space limitations on the disc. See here - http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1110/transformers.html

Yes is sounded pretty good but now with Blu-ray being the standard for HD movies we should expect more from previously HD DVD exclusive studios. We should expect what we've been getting from Blu-ray exclusive studios for a while now. And that's lossless HD audio. Saying that DD+ sounds "good enough" is incomprehensible to me.

Transformers, 5 stars for Audio.
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/1110/transformers.html

DD+ on certain disks has been BETTER than many lossless soundtracks.

Just because the tech is better, doesn't mean you get a better result... garbage in, garbage out. And that applies to both PQ and AQ. :)

Woohooo!!! This is probably the biggest title I was jealous of when it came out. It's a shame the show has gone downhill so horribly over the course of last season but I'm always a fan of when they actually start with season one when it comes to tv shows in high def.

But anyways I'd still love to have season one in high def.....other then it's last episode that entire season was awesome.

I like Heroes, but won't be buying it on BD. Not really big on rewatching TV shows I've already seen. I'll be interested to see the pricing on the Season 2 set, since it is terribly short.

I also hope the huge layoff caused by the writers strike hasn't killed this show entirely. I know it is coming back next season, but I just hope people are still interested in it.

Can't say I've ever heard of that problem... he may be reffering to a surge protector that cleans power. They claim you'll get "cleaner" sound. Honestly, I think it's a load of bunk.

Surge protectors are as advertised... they'll protect your equipment from sudden power surges/spikes and lightning spikes.

If you want protection from brownouts, you require a UPS.

My main issue with the show was it seemed like every episode accomplished nothing. You'd watch an entire episode and it would answer 1 question and then ask 5 more. While it's a cool approach because it makes for an absolutely amazing finale when the finale doesn't deliver it makes for a terrible show. You put all that pressure on the finale and it's never going to live up to expectations.

With season 2 it was like "damnit stop asking questions and start answering them". I don't think the show was terrible I was just growing very tired of cliffhangers that never led to anything meaningful.

Bah, that is what makes these shows great. I like serial dramas that build on one main theme from episode to episode. When done correctly, it makes it all seem like one big 22 hour show, which is fantastic. You can really develop characters greatly in these formats as well. Lost and Heroes are probably two of the best examples of this right now. I throughly enjoy both shows.

Did either of you ever watch Buffy or Angel? Both were done the same way, though they didn't ask quite as many questions from episode to episode.

Yes but in a 22 hour long movie you'd hope for an awesome payoff at the end. And to anyone who followed all of season 1 the ending was a bit weak. It was entertaining but damn the fight that Peter/Sylar had a few episodes before was 20 times better than the one in the finale...and you can't even see that fight you just see light come in from under a door. But it was easily the better of the 2 fights.

No, a bunch of posts on AVSForums said it was essential, so that the bulb would always be able to cool off if the TV lost power unexpectedly. It made sense to me, since it seems that the bulb cooling improperly is something that would lessen the lifespan.

Basically everything they added new sucked and everything that was from last season was awesome. Personally I wasn't a big fan of the spanish twins or Kristin Bells character. To me it seemed like they just hired two incredibly hot women and were like "uhh we gotta give em superpowers and find a way to give them screen time...it worked for the cheerleader".

But I agree season 1 was some of the best time I've ever had watching a TV show. I was on the edge of my seat every single week wondering what would happen. Like I said I don't think season 2 was terrible it just kinda rode the wave of suck that the last episode of season 1 brought in.

I bought Pans Labyrinth...but that doesn't have a dub. I also bought Apocalypto...although I'm not sure I'd call that a foreign film. Again, though, no dub.

I checked the audio specs and The Orphanage does not have a dub option, either, which sucks to me.

Dub I can deal with...the dubs don't bother me nearly as much as they bother others. One of my favorite blu-rays is District B-13, which really has an awful dubbing.

I'm also watching Nigh****ch (on DVD) right now from Netflix, which is dubbed, too, but I got right into it.

I'll take dubbing over subtitles anyday, although I know I might be in the minority there.

I've always wanted to see them as they look pretty good from the trailers.

Netflix ticked me off today. The top 3 movies in queue are on a wait list which is fine. So they get the movie I sent back to them....I come home tonight to see they shipped Rocky Balboa...problem is Rocky Balboa was in the middle of my list. the #4 movie on my list was The Punisher which should have been the next one shipped. I was looking forward to seeing that this weekend. Guess now I have to wait :(.

I like it. It's my style, though. It got me in right from the very beginning. I wouldn't say the acting or the characters are that cool, though, but the way the movie is told is pretty interesting. I'm almost through it and will definitely check out Day Watch when I can.

Netflix has screwed up for me lately too. Black Snake Moan was first on my list and said it was available. Instead of Black Snake Moan though, they sent me Cars, which was next on my list. This was a Friday, and for some reason Cars was listed as shipping Monday. I was pleasantly surprised when Cars showed up Saturday instead, until I got another copy of it Tuesday too, meaning I sent Cars back, but because I had another copy of it sent to me it backed things up. :(

:( I enjoyed Electronica Mars.

Not too excited about Ghostbusters on BD. I'm not really a fan of older movies being on HD media. I haven't particularly watched one yet, but I'm just assuming that since it wasn't shot on high quality film, the transfer just won't be worthy of the high cost for BD.

Just wanted to give you some info ewto, as you can be missing out on some great transfers -

Film is infinitely higher quality then even 1080p. An 85 year old movie shot on 16mm film is still going to offer more theoretical resolution (film doesn't have actual measured resolution) then something shot in 1080p today. 35mm Film has been the standard since about the 1940s, and it has roughly 4 times the resolution of 1080p.

The problem with old films is nitrate damage, improper storage, layers failing, etc.

Take for example Casablanca on HD-DVD. It looks incredible. It looks better then most things shot yesterday, since it has been properly restored at 4000p (roughly), and then downscaled to 1080p.

As PrimeBane said, garbage in, garbage out - if a film was shot on a poor quality stock which hasn't been stored well won't really ever be restored to something looking like it was shot today.

But a film like "The Searchers" which underwent an excruciating restoration process features one of my favorite transfers in HD movies.

Hope that helps.

I'm pretty much 99% subtitles 1% dub. Mainly because I have to force myself to watch foreign movies. I bought the Lives of Others the week it came out and I didn't get around to seeing it until like 8 months later. Everytime I'd look at it I'd be like "ehh it requires reading, lets put in something that doesn't". The only time I've ever watched a movie so far on blu-ray that was dubbed was District B13 because I was ******ed and didn't even put 2 and 2 together that it was a foreign film. By time I figured it out it was too late and I wasn't in a reading mood so awful dubbing was a go.

It's kind of a shame that you aren't a fan of subtitles because the Lives of Others is one of my favorite blu-rays released to date but like basically all the other ones no english dub.

The Justin Timberlake blu-ray is actually pretty good. It's the mystery 3rd concert dvd that I have that I just fail to mention every time. I originally bought it because it was the first ever blu-ray store exclusive (and it had Summer Love on it, awesome beat) but it turned out being my 2nd favorite concert dvd right behind John Legend. It's never too late to bring sexy back, and you've made a wise decision bringing it back for $13.99.

I'd only buy it if you were a huge racing sim fan and was the type of person that couldn't settle for anything less than gold. Trying to get the absolute perfect driving line down will have you playing it for hours but outside of that it's pretty stripped down. The only reason I have it is because I'm a huge GT fan and it's a good buffer game between now and Grand Theft Auto. $30 is an awesome price for a brand new game but it's definately a hate it/love it game. And to be honest I have no idea which side of that you'd be on. Don't remember you ever playing a racing game so I'm going to say probably hate it.

for those that don't know about it...

The "Bitstream Bomb"

This issue has been documented in various places around the internet, including some reputable message boards. HDM players that bitstream dts-HD MA have, with certain movies, a demonstrated high volume pop through certain receivers. It will certainly wake up your neighbourhood and may damage your speakers. I haven't seen any confirmed cases of speaker damage reported, but there is a legitimate fear.

Movies known to have the problem:

* 1408
* Golden Compass (BD)
* The Fly (BD) - 13:00
* Chronos (BD) - 38:52
* Fantastic Four (BD) - 4:22 or 4:35
* Hannibal Rising (HD DVD)
* Close Encounters of the Third Kind (BD) - 23:40
* Eagles Farewell Concert (HD DVD)
* Flight of the Phoenix (BD) -51:00
* Flyboys (BD)

Typically it occurs only once per movie.

Receivers known to be susceptible to the problem:

* Onkyo 605, 705, 805, PR885
* Integra 8.8, 9.8
* Yamaha RX-V3800, RX-V1800

There has also been an isolated complaint of it happening with a Pioneer 91TXH.

The problem appears to be related to older encodes that were authored prior to dts upgrading their authoring suite to 1.5 (September 2007) or 1.51 (December 2007). There have been no complaints noted with newer releases such as I, Robot. Some internet reports quote dts as saying that they have revised their authoring suite to take into account the issues with the specific IC. However, dts themselves have said that isn't the case but have acknowledged the two upgrades to their authoring suite. It could be that, as a byproduct of those revisions, the particular prefect storm of circumstances (specific IC, implementation, and particular datastream) necessary to produce the "bitstream bomb" has been addressed.

Marantz and Denon AVR's use a different IC chip for bitstream processing and do not have the problem. Also, some new pressings of Fantastic Four are apparently re-encoded and do not have the problem.

A number of different players have been used that all exhibited the same problem: Toshiba HD-XA2 & HD-A35; Pioneer BDP-95FD; Panasonic BD-30; and Denon 3800. I have experienced it in Fanastic 4 at about the 4 minute 35 second mark with an LG BH200 bitstreamed to an Onkyo TX-SR805.

You may want to use a different audio codec for those discs noted above. I know a number of people have been waiting for the Panasonic BD-50 and the Sony S350 because of the bitstream ability, but if you have an affected receiver, you may want to rely on a unit with onboard decoding.

Onkyo is reportedly aware of the problem and looking into it. This does not affect TrueHD via bitstream, only dts-HD Master Audio.

There are reports of a successful firmware fix for Onkyo x05 AVR's in Europe. At least one ambitious member of AVS successfully applied it to his North American Onkyo. It does appear like a fix is near, but nothing has been officially released in Canada or the USA yet. Yamaha has apparently released updated firmware in Australia that fixes the issue as well. I've also seen updated firmware files on Yamaha's Product Advisory Board site (for dealers) but I haven't seen it confirmed that if fixes the "bitstream bomb".

The good news is that it appears that both Onkyo and Yamaha are moving quickly to try and resolve the problem. Let's hope that both companies provide user installable firmware updates in North America soon (I don't think anyone relishes the idea of unhooking a 55 lb. AVR and lugging it to a service centre).

Apparently there are now some firmware updates to fix the problems on the Onkyos and Yamahas...

Yamaha 3800: http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=558316&CTID=5000300&RLTID=1505&DETYP=RELATION

You can find other Yamaha updates on the same site (1800, 6190)

HOLY CRAP!

- DSP firmware update: The firmware resides inside a .WAV file (!), which needs to be burned onto an audio CD and played back through a CD/DVD-player connected by an optical link (TOSLINK) to Opt1.

There must be a one-to-one copy of the file and it must be transfered unmodified.
Most older CD/DVD player will work just fine. Read the corresponding threads.

- Main firmware update: The update routine uses a RS232 connection to the rear of the unit.
The RS232 cable must be of type straight through (no crossover) with a male and female connector at the end.

You need a PC with a COM1 port (default) or a USB => RS232 converter for this, as described elsewhere.

The update procedure is been initiated through a supplied setup software, which handles everything.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1016297

That DSP firmware update sounds PIMP AS HELL! But the other one sounds way confusing. :(

Now I have to figure out which one I need, and if it's the main, how I go about this. My computer is nowhere NEAR my receiver, and neither are going to move.

I was watching the Prestige and at one point in a part near the end of the movie there is a loud noise (trying to avoid spoilers for someone that may still have not seen it) and it made my receiver make this HUGE popping noise and shut it off. I thought it died......it ended up coming back on, but I was really worried.

Receiver is an old Kenwood that only does DD and DTS though.

First off gotta give a GSA to patsfan4ever for selling me a brand new Night At The Museum on blu for a sweet price.

Next I gotta rate this movie very high on the PQ/AQ scales. Most of the movie backgrounds are limited on color so when colors do show up on screen boy do they POP out at you!!! One of the most vibrant movies I've seen on blu to-date, I'd have to rate it a 8 on PQ.

Audio, now that is a whole nother bit of awesomeness. This movie to me had some of the best audio I've heard right behind Live Free Or Die Hard. This movie was loud!! T-Rex scenes where great, but the scenes with all the jungle animals where the best. I'd rate this movie a 9 on AQ.

very surprised at how overall good this was on blu. :)

We (wife, kids, and I) have been a big fan of this movie since it first came out. I'm a huge history buff, my Son loves Dinosaurs so this was just a given to go see at the movies. Never got around to buying it on DVD so I knew it was a must buy for blu. It's defiantly a great family movie. :) We're very excited to hear about a sequel also.

I have about $250 worth of gc's at best buy and planning to get a ps3. I'm contemplating whether I should wait for the MGS bundle or just getting the 40 gb tomorrow. I'm not a big fan of MGS but thought the bundle would be a better deal since it comes with the rumble controller as well. Thoughts?

Also is there any coupons I can use for the PS3? I know I received a 10% coupon before when I was a reward zone member but didn't know if you can use those for video game systems.

Watched "Good Luck Chuck" last night with the wife. Hmmmmmmmmmm, what can I say about this movie? Oh Yeah, TIT-S!!!!! Wow!! :eek:

I never thought they could ever mix a date-movie with soft-core-porn and still seamlessly get away with it! Now anything with Jessica Alba and seeing her in a G-String would merit automatically giving a movie a "must buy" sticker. But actually the whole movie was pretty good. Dane Cook of course brings his comedy into the flick but the fat guy that plays his horny friend just STOLE THE MOVIE!! That dude has some lines that dropped me right to the floor laughing.
Stu: "I'd suck a fart out her ass-hole and hold it like a bong hit." (talking about a really hot chick)
Stu: "If you were a hamburger at McDonald's, I'd name you my McBeautiful Titty Sandwich with ******* on top."
Stu: "I'll tell you not satisfying. Last night I masturbated into a grapefruit. I put it into a microwave and heated it up a little bit, which helped, but... still."

Like I said this movie is as close to soft-core-porn as you can get so if your mate likes or can stand raunchy sex humor (done right), then you got a perfect date movie. There are a ton of sex-scenes in the movie so in the special features they give you a Matrix that lets you see each one individually and the special features are done in HD and also have tons of boob to look at. :o

Now if you want me to watch a movie like that and still pay attention to the PQ/AQ then you're on crack :o :D. With so many hot girls and T&A flying around no way could I recall the quality. But in honesty the PQ was crisp - a solid 10 in my book! and that's not cause of all the tit-s and ass either.

Watched AVP:R last night. Not a bad movie honestly. Some good action, lots of Predator, good amount of Aliens....disappointingly little amount of the hybrid. It's set to arrive on Saturday at my place (a week from today).

Anything specific I should know about plasma ownership? Do I need to leave it on dim settings for a while; not use it more then x amount of hours a day the first x days, etc?

It's a bunch easier to just ask you all instead of searching the internets :).

And this better be a good recommendation! I'm taking all of you on your word sight unseen!

People say you have to "BREAK" in your plasma for the first 100hrs. Honestly that was more for older Plasma's.

Just dont have it in "Torch Mode" and you will be ok. Enjoy it. Plasma's are GREAT TV's. The best IMHO.

Take the time and do a calibration on it to get the right colors..

Watched "The Lookout" today...I remember when it came out in theatres the previews looked good and I wanted to see it. Now that I finally got to see it I can honestly say its nothing close to what I expected. I thought there would be more action to it. Instead it was for the most part boring. The end got a little better but this movie definetly isnt worth the time to watch in my opinion. 3 out of 10 for it. Extra point given for Jeff Daniels being in it!

I do. Haven't watched Cars yet but Casino Royale kicks all sorts of ass. PQ is outstanding... don't know about AQ because I watched it upstairs on the Panny with just the TV speakers. I owned it before on DVD and definitely glad it has been replaced.

Should have been more specific, my bad. Looking to buy the two titles. :D

Picked up Incubus and T2 for $14 a piece on Amazon. I've set a limit of no more than $15 for any Blu-ray disc, but between Amazon and the used store by me, that shouldn't be a problem. Snagged Superbad at the used store for $15. :D

SBrooks1 I know you work at BB so explain this to me

I went in to a BB today with a Circuit City ad planning to have them price match the $19.99 sale price on Pan's BD (BB's was sale priced $24.99). I took it up to the register and asked the clerk if he would save the time and price match the disc at $19.99 + 10% instead of me following BB's official policy of 'if you buy it at BB and find it advertised cheaper at a competitor bring it in and we will refund you the difference plus 10%'. The blue shirt looked at me like a deer in headlights and his manager simply couldn't grasp the concept and said he could only price match down to $19.99.

I said then ring me up at your price of $24.99 and I'll walk out the door and come back in and we can price match to the CC advertised price of $19.99 +10% ... he went to the back to try and get an answer from someone else and came back with some silly mumbo jumbo about how I would have had to have purchased the item at BB before the CC ad hit.

My brain was hurting and I really didn't feel like wasting anymore time since I had other things to do and I can go back and do this again if need be .... but why would anyone risk loosing a customer for life over a 10% discount on a small ticket item??!!

IceRat - could the 10% only apply to after-purchase sales? Maybe they'll price-match when you purchase something, but they'll give you the extra 10% after the fact to compensate you for your trouble of bringing it back.

I have no idea, just tossing an idea out there.

Just purchased a PS3 mostly for Blu Ray and need help with the settings. I have a 30 inch sony crt. Most movies look great but Kingdom of Heaven's(praised for its presentation) blacks blend with the background. So what should these settings be set to?

Settings > Display Settings > RGB Full Range (HDMI) =

Settings > Display Settings > Cross Color Reduction Filter =

Settings > Display Settings > Y Pb / Cb Pr / Cr Super-White (HDMI) =

Settings > BD / DVD Settings > Cinema Conversion =

Settings > BD / DVD Settings > DVD Upscaler =

Settings > BD / DVD Settings > BD/DVD Video Output Format =

Settings > BD / DVD Settings > BD 1080p 24 Hz Output (HDMI) =

Can anyone help me out with the PS3 settings for optimal video?

Just watched Enchanted and it was a surprisingly entertaining movie. Amy Adams was great and the songs/dances were well choreographed.

It very's on the TV not the system. So there really isnt anyway to give you the best settings for your TV. You can just manually make some adjustments and see if its any better or not. If you dont want to play with it some then usually the default setup is the best unless you have someone professionally do it for you. But that can be very expensive.

Any of you guys have any experience with x10.com's icon remote?
It claims to be the "Logitech Killer" and compare itself with the Harmony 880.

My Dad ordered one and after playing around with it for awhile I decided to order one too. For a quarter of the cost, I can deal with it not being quite as sleek, but i do like that it has very nice channel logos on a large LCD screen with His and Hers settings and the set up is fairly easy.

For anyone thinking about ordering, this website is weird. The price on the remote fluctuates between 49.99, 59.99, 69.99 and 79.99.

just close the window and open a new window until you get it showing the price of 49.99. (Anyone have any idea why they do that?)

Very true. I wouldnt trade my 880 in for anything. I just love the feel of it in my hand (the remote that is) :D

But hell for $49.99 (which I can not get it to come up) I might buy one for the bedroom just to have.

I dont like the idea of batteries tho. Thats the only downfall. I didnt noticed if it came with a charging station like the 880

There's a vertical green line showing up on my 40" Sony Bravia. I bought the tv about 5 months ago so I know it's covered by Sony's one-year warranty. Should I call a local repair shop directly or go through Sony? I've heard that if you call Sony they'll direct you to support in India or something. Any advice (seeing as there are usually at least 3 people browsing this thread :p)?

Sony's customer service in my limited experience is top notch. I had an issue with my receiver about 6 months ago and I immediately got someone on the phone, he was American, and he talked me through the problem to solution for no charge. My HD movie viewing this weekend:

Friday Night: I Am Legend on BD
Not the best movie ever, but I did enjoy it. PQ was freakin' amazing to say the least... it's definately in my top 5 now, but theCG was brutal in parts. As a pet owner, it will be tough to watch again but I think I need to to watch the alternate ending. One small beef, being used to Warner movies on HD DVD, I was surprised that I couldn't bring up the in movie menu by pressing the up arrow on the remote. I hope they add this feature at some point.

Saturday Afternoon: Stargate SG-1 - Ark of Truth on Movie Central HD
My local PPV movie channel had this on and being a big Stargate fan, I lept at the chance to watch this in HD. Well, the PQ was bad to say the least... it looked like they had just taken the DVD and upconverted it. If it ever hits BD, I expect it to be much better. As for the movie itself, it felt very much like a 2 parter (ie nothing special for a standalone movie), but it was a nice finale to the whole Ori storyline.

Saturday Night: Legend of the Waterhorse on BD
Fun family movie. Not a classic by any stretch of the imagination, but definately something that I could watch again. PQ was good, but not eye popping great. CG was solid for the most part, although some of the hallway scenes did look bad. Great if you have kids, but rent otherwise.

Saturday Night: Shaun of the Dead on HD DVD
I've seen this movie several times now, but it's such a fun little zombie flick. And the PQ is pretty damn good to boot. Considering how cheap the HD DVD version can be found now, this is a no brainer pickup if you still have a player.
