Any of you have the Harmony 670 remote? I bought one for my father in law as a Christmas present. It works great but he says it eats batteries like nobodys business. Goes through at least a set of batteries a week. I have the 550 and it doesn't have that smae problem at all.

Suggestions???

It's not:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=8aW9BpamQSA

That's the engine. It looks roughly like an X-Box 1 engine.

IE, not good.

Too bad all the power of the Wii is being used to render that stale environment. Once you add in moving characters and wanting to do any sort of AI in the game, that won't be possible.

Don't get me wrong, the Wii is great fun for what it is. Just won't be a graphics powerhouse.

Would Cloverfield be any better in HD?

Pretty much any movie will be better in HD assuming it's done correctly. Even though they used shaky cams the overall picture quality would definitely benefit from a remastering to HD. The soundtrack would be nice in DTS-HD MA as well. :D

In case any of you didn't already know, this guy is fantastic!!! He posted that he was selling off some of his Sportspicks and one of them happened to be a grail of mine, a Series 5 Niners Rice.

Josh offered me a very fair and reasonable price for the Rice and a Coop Classic Ryan Astros Chase piece as well. He even accepted Ultraviolet on BD as part of the payment, being the movie ***** that he is.

Both figures arrived today and are fantastic!!! Rice is already up on display in my TV/game room now. I'll be interested to see how long it will take for the wife to notice it.

My cheapass would be interested in it for $20, since that would cover the cost of your controller. :p

How much to ship to 43230? I should read better.....I see $30 was shipped. I'll buy it for $25 shipped if no one else wants it. Still should cover your controller.

I have to disagree with you here as the whole point of the documentary angle was to showcase an amateur filming the entire experience...to imply as a college kid that he could afford an HD camera much less be concerned about the surround sound would be against what this movie was meant to portray.

Cloverfield was filmed with the Panavision Genesis HD Camera so bringing it to an HD disc format would be a natural progression. If you want to watch it and think you're truly seeing it in the eyes of their cams then watch it in 480i. ;)

LOL...well I might just do that ya smart ass! :) Seriously, you're referring to the behind the scenes tech end of filming whereas I'm thinking of it from the actual character's perspective. And yes...it would look better from our standpoint but then it detracts from the experience...yes I truly believe it would take away from what we're seeing in terms of the whole story.

I never had good luck with Rechargeable Batteries. Seems like they dont last long on a charge.

Try some Lithuim AA batteries. Might get better life out of them

Also if your remote has a backlight see what its set for 10 sec, 15 sec, etc that could be a big problem killing your batteries.

From personal experience, Lithium Ion aren't much better :( The first and only set I bought for my remote lasted a little over a month.

They said they turn the glow off as soon as they hit whatever buttons they need to change the channel and such. Said they just hit the glow button to turn it off.

I have rechargeables in my 550 and it works fine. I wouldn't think the 670 was that different. They love the remote otherwise.

It very's on the TV not the system. So there really isnt anyway to give you the best settings for your TV. You can just manually make some adjustments and see if its any better or not. If you dont want to play with it some then usually the default setup is the best unless you have someone professionally do it for you. But that can be very expensive.

Thanks for the help. After doing some reserach online it turned out that my tv is better if:

RGB Full Range (HDMI) = Full instead of limited.

Insterestingly enough, it made the blacks darker but now I have different levels of black. :)

Netflix to Raise Prices for Blu-ray Subscribers
Tue Apr 22, 2008 at 01:00 PM ET

Citing higher retail and wholesale prices, Netflix plans to implement a "modest monthly premium" for access to Blu-ray titles some time this year.

As confirmed through transcripts of Netflix's first quarter earnings call, President and CEO Reed Hastings made the announcement during the conference call yesterday.

"Purchasing Blu-ray DVDs costs more both at retail and wholesale than standard definition DVDs, and consumers are used to paying more for high-definition content in every other channel, including video rental stores, video-on-demand, and cable channels," Hastings stated. "Because of the higher cost of Blu-ray and the consumer expectations around high-def content, we are planning on implementing a modest monthly premium for access to Blu-ray some time this year."

No information was provided regarding a timeline for the price increase or the amount that might be charged. We'll be sure to keep you posted as we learn more regarding the company's plans for next generation subscribers.

Bwahaha. Screw Netflix. I like how they didn't raise the prices before. My local video store has their HD's and Blu Rays the same prices as dvds: $2.50. I wonder if Blockbuster will do the same.

My Blockbuster screws us at $6.50 per new Blu-ray rental. :(

Do you have a Hollywood Rental in the area? They've been pretty good with sending me periodic coupons in the mail...like $1.00 off, free popcorn or free rentals. Does Blockbuster offer anything like that?

My Blockbuster has a weak selection so far and rentals are the same price as other movies I think, which is like $5.

Yeah, we have a lot of mom & pop stores in Southern California. Plus they have movies 1-2 weeks before the streetdate.

$2.50 is for 1 night, but who needs it for more than 1 night.

I just came here to post that Netflix thing, too.

No chance I pay more. I'd rather buy the blu-rays, that's just me.

I don't have a problem paying $14 a month for 2 at a time unlimited through Netflix, but I will NOT pay more. I might even drop my subscription down to once a month at this point.

Months ago Blockbuster screwed me three ways (higher prices, limited in-store returns and killed my videogame rental coupon), and I dropped them immediately.

I dropped Blockbuster for those same reasons and I'll adjust my Netflix away from Blu Ray rentals if they raise the price.

Months ago Blockbuster screwed me three ways (higher prices, limited in-store returns and killed my videogame rental coupon), and I dropped them immediately.

Same thing happened to me with Blockbuster. I was pretty ticked off, but I just kept my subscription anyway, since I like being able to return movies and pick up something new I want.

I should probably pay attention to how much I rent each month and see if it even works out for what I pay. Of course, I'm pretty sure my CC just expired that I had with them, so maybe my membership isn't valid anymore anyway.

I hate the new policy they have on returns now as well. If you don't bring a movie back within 5 days of the due date, they convert your rental to a sale. If you return it within 5 days you get your money back as store credit. You used to have 30 days and you would actually get your money back as opposed to store credit.

I really wish we had another video store close. :(

Didn't know about that sale policy...I wonder why they keep blatantly screwing the consumer. You'd think a dying company wouldn't be so brash and openly apathetic about what the customer wants.

I called Netflix to tell them if I see a price increase on my account I'm dropping them immediately. Of course I was bluffing, since I'd never go back to Netflix, but they said if they hear from enough people they may go in a different direction.

I doubt it, but whatever, I like to think my little voice is worth something every once in a while.

That Netflix news sucks. I'll have to see what the new prices are, but I'll probably keep my subscription. I'd much rather pay $20 a month for abut 15 rentals vs $20 per movie I'll only watch once.

I hate Blockbuster, they kept raising and changing my plan so I dropped them 6 months ago or so. I do go in once in a while if there's something I don't want to buy but just today I called to see if they got The Orphanage in on BD and the guy told me it doesn't come out in BD. I told him he was wrong and he got pretty upset and hung up on me when I offered to bet him that it did.

Seems that Blockbuster has lost quite a few customers with their constant changes. I wonder why they are going under? Hmm.

As for the Wii, I think they will be easier to find in the coming months. I scored one this past Sunday for my friend and the TRU manager was even commenting how surprised all the employees were at the small turnout to get them. I also read that the excess shipments that have been going to Europe will start heading here has demand there as died down considerably.

Because they keep losing money. With the 30 return policy, tons of people were keeping their rentals for the whole 30 days. In order to actually have any stock on-hand, they had order a ton of copies. After the first round of rentals, they had so many copies left sitting on the shelf and all those weren't renting. They had to try and sell them all as used, but it is hard to move 50 copies of a movie everyone just saw. Plus, I would imagine there was some loss involved in charging the rental to a CC and then having to refund it as well.

The thing that was crappy was they didn't announce the change, other than by adding something to the bottom of the receipt you get at checkout. It wasn't until I saw a sign posted, like 2 weeks after the policy changed, that I even knew about it. At that point, I had already rented a couple movies under the new policy and had them sold to me.

I had to go in and argue with the manager to get my money back since I have no real use for store credit there. I can get anything I want cheaper somewhere else, so I don't want my money tied up there.

This is somewhat true, but also hard to really judge. There are a couple big releases coming out (Mario Kart and Wii Fit) in the next month, so I would expect that Wiis will be hard to find again at that point. At this point, you still can't find one in a store anywhere.

No idea why there weren't people there at the TRU. Maybe the weather was bad?? I imagine a lot of people aren't into the idea of waiting around at 5am in the morning either. That seems to be the general time you have to start standing outside.

I guess I'm more of the belief that Nintendo will continue to keep the supply down a bit to keep their buzz and their name in the news. I think they have been shorting the supply intentionally a bit, so I think it will still continue on for awhile, whether it is artificial or real.

It was about 65-70 degrees Sunday morning so weather played no part in it. I think the economy may be part of it but there were about 6 people or so wanting one and they got around 20 or so. Even the TRU manager said these will be easier to find in coming months based on what he has heard from reps and read online. Even when they had them at Circuit City a couple of weeks ago they were still handing out vouchers 20 minutes after the store opened. I walked up and grabbed one but did not purchase it. Yes there is still demand for these but not the "wait in line overnight" type. Nintendo has been sending their excess units to Europe because of the demand and the weak US dollar. Now that the demand in Europe has subsided, the US will see those units.

Well, that would be great for everyone that still wants one and can't find them. I guess we will see how it turns out. I still think Mario Kart and WiiFit are going to drive up demand along with Nintendo continuing to short supply and make them hard to find, but maybe not.

Certainly is odd that there were still some available at a store after they opened.

WingNut 25
04-22-2008, 02:38 PM
Well from everything I'm reading and hearing, Nintendo isn't "short supplying" them in terms of production. They just aren't sending them here in big numbers due to the economy. I don't think the release of those 2 games will suddenly drive demand back up to the point where these disappear again. jjks even saw some sitting in a store in TN recently. These won't be readily available at every store, but they aren't going to be as hard to find in coming months.

Another indicator is ebay. These things are only going for $40 over retail price plus tax (I was watching auctions and looking at completed auctions 2 weeks ago).

Saw this over at HDDVD.org...thought the interesting part was the DVD vs. blu-ray attach rate. Doesn't really bode well for blu-ray climbing out of niche market...

I also don't know if the PS3 trojan thing holds water in comparison, because the PS2 was an early DVD player/video game machine, too.

30 to 1 vs. 3 to 1, though....big difference.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Blu-ray had 81% "HD on disc" market share in March which was the first whole month after the demise of HD DVD that took the last 19% according to Redhill Group.

The first quarter of 2008 saw 4.9 million HD movies on disc sold. 3.8 million of those were Blu-ray titles. Since inception 9.8 million HD DVD and Blu-ray movies have been sold.

An estimated total of 3.5 million Blu-ray players had been sold in the US by the end of 2007. That puts an average of 3 movies in every Blu-ray owners home. Michael Nathanson, analyst at Bernstein Research, said that at same point in the standard DVD adoption curve as many as 30 titles was attached to each household with a player. The low number for the HD format is by many (including Bernstein Research) believed to be due to the fact that the vast majority of Blu-ray players are in homes because Sony has embedded them into the PlayStation 3 video game console.

Horsecrap!!! The low number is due to the prohibitive costs of the GD discs! I highly doubt that at the same point in the curve that regular DVD's were $30 each - no way they were.

This early on, regular DVDs were MORE expensive then HD media.

I remember dropping 40 bucks on tarzan and bugs life like it was yesterday.

Well, I know in Canada new DVD releases early on ('99, 2000) were anywhere from $20 to $25 the first week and older stuff was $40 and up.

I agree, day and date stuff is overpriced but most catalogue stuff isn't too bad so far (other than the crooks at Fox and New Line of course)

As some of you may know, I was one of the several who had both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray throughout the "war."

Via ebay, I am slowly replacing some movies that were available on both formats with the BR versions.

My most recent was Phantom of the Opera.

I won't lie, I'm severely disappointed.

I don't know if it was the nature of the transfer, but the BR version is muted and pale compared to the HD-DVD version's vibrance, richness, and depth of color.

I replaced Superman: The Movie & Superman Returns and they look identical to the HD-DVD versions.

Same studio, probably similar transfer. Why so crappy?

Anyone else having an issue with the same movie looking good or bad depending on format?

Thanks.

I'd chalk it up to hiccups with it being a new tech.

I've heard that for the longest time, Sony was doing the work for pretty much everyone in terms of BD coding... I think we can blame initial problems like this on them.

Thank goodness they refined the process. :)

Is that why certain titles have been "re-released" due to shoddy transferring?

I hate that it's one of a movie I enjoy so much. I'll hold onto my HD-DVD version and hope that WB rectifies their incompetence :D:)

I wonder if I could snail or e-mail WB about how crappy the PQ is, maybe send me a new one (that would likely be equally crappy)? Doubtful, but possibly worth a try.

I haven't seen Phantom but HighDefDigest gave it 4.5/5 stars of video quality for both the HD DVD and Blu-ray versions giving them equal praise. As for Superman, they will look identical because in the beginning when Warner was supporting both formats they would remaster the movie for a 30GB HD DVD and then port it to Blu-ray, not utilizing the extra 20GB of space. Obviously they won't do that anymore but that's how it was in the beginning.

I have paid anywhere from $12.01 DLVD to $20.90 DLVD for Superman & Superman Returns, Phantom, and Talladega Nights - I replaced my regular DVD copy on that one.

I wonder if I got a really convincing bootleg of POTO. It arrived 100% new and sealed, and the seller has incredible feedback...I know it's not my HDTV or the PS3 - I put in POTC 1 and Walk Hard after Phantom to make sure I wasn't crazy - they both looked beautiful in high-def. Maybe there's something else going on?

Oh well, good thing I still have my HD-DVD copy :)

It's Paramount....who got caught in the middle of HD DVD dying. So until an announcement is made, none of the new Paramount releases are available on blu-ray. The same happened with Sweeney Todd, There Will Be Blood, etc...

Nobody knows what Paramount is doing with blu-ray, but with Universal making an initial announcement about upcoming releases, you can probably expect Paramount to mention something shortly.

My question is, when they finally do start releasing these titles like Cloverfield, will they be new release prices or catalog?

Install Gabest splitter by hand:

* Extract MatroskaSplitter.ax to C:\windows\system32.

No need to do that. I didn't and it works fine. Actually I've come to like the streaming of Windows Media Player 11 even better than TVersity. It loads files quicker over my WiFi connection and even though it takes up more RAM on my desktop where my files are stored it still loads them up quicker. Give WMP11 a shot as well.

National Treasure 2 BD HDD Review:

Video: 4
Audio:4
Hi-Def Extras: 2.5
Overall: Recommended

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

'National Treasure: Book of Secrets' is presented in 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, and framed at 2.40:1. It's a generally strong presentation, though I found a aspect lacking.

The positives are many. The source is predictably pristine, with excellent sharpness and detail. The image is flush with depth, and rarely looks like anything but sparkling, three-dimensional high-def. Colors are likewise well saturated if a bit processed, which gives fleshtones a slightly artificial cast. The palette is also tweaked towards orange, so don't expect a particularly realistic-looking transfer.

Blacks are less impressive. While deep, shadow detail falters due to a heavy black crush. I also noticed some motion artifacts, with ringing on some sharp lines. Compression artifacts are not a problem, except for a smidgen of noise on some of the most saturated hues. Still, if 'Book of Secrets' isn't a perfect presentation, it's quite attractive.

The Audio: Rating the Sound

Disney departs from their usual PCM presentation to go for an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track (48kHz/24-bit) on 'Book of Secrets.' It's a fine mix, one suitably polished if not quite as aggressive as I expected.

Certainly, this is a dynamic and polished track. The deep low bass and sweet, powerful highs ring out from the front speakers with great impact. Dialogue isn't overwhelmed by all the action, so volume issues aren't apparent. Surround use, however, isn't always sustained. Discrete effects definitely make their presence known, but I could have used more generalized atmosphere, as well as improved integration of the score. At loud volumes, however, 'Book of Secrets' does make more of an impression, but sometimes subtlety sings loudest.

"Nightmare Before Christmas" Sneak Peak

Disney has attached a new video trailer to next month's Blu-ray release of 'National Treasure 2,' previewing a dozen of their biggest 2008 Blu-ray disc releases, including a first look at the still-unscheduled next-gen release of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas.'

Dropping on our doorstep this week was a copy of Disney's 'National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets,' which features a pre-movie trailer previewing a host of previously-announced upcoming releases, including 'Tinker Bell' and 'Sleeping Beauty.'

The excitement comes at the conclusion of the montage, however, with a sparkling clip for Tim Burton's beloved cult classic 'The Nightmare Before Christmas.' Though the spot offers no exact street date, the Blu-ray is touted as arriving this Fall, and timed to coincide with a new standard DVD two-disc re-issue.

No additional specs are revealed in the spot, though it does promise fully remastered video and audio, plus all-new exclusive bonus features.

I have to say, I've had some pretty crazy luck the last two days. :)

On Wednesday on the way home I stopped at EBGames as there were blowing out select games for less than $10. I had hoped to score a copy of Viva Pinata Party Animals for my little girl and found the last copy. As I'm paying, I see 2 Wii boxes on the back counter. I enquire and it's not just display boxes! :D Mission accomplished for my Mom.

Then last night I stopped at Futureshop to see if they had any Panasonic 42PX75s plasmas in stock (currently clearance priced at $999.95). I found they had 4 left, but the sales guy had another deal for me. Open box 42PX77 plus 4 years of in home warranty for $1100 ($100 off the sale price and free warranty to boot). Since this is a gift for my dad I jumped at it (normally I avoid extended warranty like the plague) as it's good peace of mind for them as I'm 5 hours away and unable to just drop by and look after problems. Plus they let me pick up an HD sat receiver for $100 as part of their regular deal.

The fun part will be getting the tv back to my parents as the box is a touch too long for the CUV, but we'll find a way. :)

Now if only I could find that receiver toy I want for myself at a nice price...

I forget. Probably MOV or MP4 files. Though maybe that was more a function of what the PS3 didn't support at the time. It didn't appear to me that WMP11 transcoded stuff in real time either, which TVersity does.

I haven't updated my 360 in a while but isn't the following true?

360 - supports WMV
PS3 - supports MP4, MOV, MPG

I have to say, I've had some pretty crazy luck the last two days. :)

On Wednesday on the way home I stopped at EBGames as there were blowing out select games for less than $10. I had hoped to score a copy of Viva Pinata Party Animals for my little girl and found the last copy. As I'm paying, I see 2 Wii boxes on the back counter. I enquire and it's not just display boxes! :D Mission accomplished for my Mom.

Went ahead and found a nice little TV stand for my new plasma coming tomorrow.

Originally 199.99 at target, marked to 99.88 as it was last years model.

This years model was 99.99, but looked worse IMO (and was actually a little smaller but held up to a 60" plasma while this one is tempered glass and supports up to 50").

It was tough getting all of my components on there and still feeling everything had room to breathe (I'm a ventilation nutjob), but everything looks good to go for tomorrow.

Do you use any additional fans to cool off your equipment? I've heard some use laptop fans to suck the air through their components.

Anyone have suggestions for a front speaker stand? I need to elevate one of my front surround speakers. Currently, it sits on the floor, which is OK, but not ideal.

Something only like two feet high and fairly skinny. The space where the speaker sits in relation to the TV and the wall isn't very big and moving the TV isn't particularly an option.

No additional fans and no real room for any - I did a bit more maneuvering and everything is not only more secure, but more spaced out - I'm not concerned with heat at the moment.

I'll try to get pictures over the weekend, but between a new TV, Mario Kart Wii, and GTA 4, I don't plan on being available to do much.

Thanks for the feeback. I'm pretty lenient as far as PQ/AQ go, too.

Honestly, I didn't really have a huge problem with 28 Days Later as an example. I know it was shot in standard definition, but the blu-ray still eliminates the "Dvd blur effect" on a big screen HD TV....which works for me if I love the movie.

It is a bookshelf speaker that I can't place on a bookshelf based on how the room is configured.

I get really excited whenever they put titles like this for example on Blu-Ray. But with the recent release (Commando, Predator) of older movies presented in Hi-Def, just being a small upgrade from Standard-Def, I'll wait for reviews for PQ and AQ before I buy.

I just gotta keep in mind that not all Hi-Def releases are worth paying the extra money for for a subpar upgrade (at least for releases of older movies)

So I just watched Before the Devil Knows your Dead. In my opinion if you can make it past the first about 30-60 seconds of the movie you're in for quite a movie. It's just not the easiest thing on the eyes going from the complete black of the opening credits to seeing a naked Phillip Seymour Hoffman railing an equally naked Marissa Tomei. If you just focus all of your attention on Marissa Tomei though you'll be fine.

But seriously after that ridiculously strange and out of no where opening scene the movie evens out and is pretty great. HDD gave it 5 stars for the movie itself and in this case I'll agree with them. It was really great. Ok well maybe not 5 stars, but 4.75 is fine.

That looks awesome!!

If I only had one suggestion... It would be to run to Home Depot or Loews and buy a rubber door stop or two. And then stack one or two and wedge them under the front of your center speaker. Try and aim it at your head as best you can from where you're primarly sitting. It will REALLY open up the audio from that speaker. Make you feel like they're talking to you.

She'd nude about 3 times in the movie....the most "graphic" being the opening scene. The opening scene is a bit of up top, but it's really all about the backside. The scenes that occur later are almost exclusively up top. Chugga - good to hear about the "Before the.....". I've got it currently rented out from BB and planned on watching it tonight.

Watched ID4 last night...and while the "specs" of the movie weren't bad...it was just too campy for my tastes. I don't remember it being that cheesy when it came out. Anything the crop duster says should be overshadowed by the presidents speech (2nd best president in a movie right behind Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact). But his speech was absolutely awesome. ID4 is a great movie but I will agree the crop duster probably wasn't needed as he was a bit too cheesy.

I went to Target today making sure I got to hit up the last day of the sale. Since I'm probably the most frugal and picky buyer here, the only thing I could justify picking up was ID4. I can always wait for Predator, AVP and I Robot to go even cheaper down the road.

I did check out the local WM and seen what they still had for HD-DVD. They had The Kingdom and American Gangster for $17.00 each. I'm not sure If I'd still get the employee discount also with the lower prices, but I might just pick them up soon.

uhmm, yeah....wow.

She looks damn good, how old is she now??? Although I must say, even though it probably seems odd.....but the time she looks the absolute best in the film is when Ethan Hawke is talking to her...and she's getting dressed...and they have a solid 5 second shot of her azz with the black panties on.

Besides all the gratuituos boobage shown...this film was great. Awesome acting. I didn't care to see his naked, white azz flopping around...but PSH is an incredible actor. As is Ethan Hawke. The last hospital scene is just chilling. Great movie.

Yeah told you it was great. And yes she looks amazing, I think she's in her mid-40's which just makes her all the more impressive. She has a great body for her age. But the movie itself when you aren't staring at Marissa Tomei nude is actually a hell of a movie. It was a blind buy for me because I looked at the cover and saw a bunch of stars that I usually like in movies. Then when I saw HDD give it a 5/5 in the movie itself category I had to see it.
