HDMI, optical cable's from Monoprice.com. Very good cables at a fraction of the price Monster charges. You can get a cheap antenna to get OTA HD.
If you want BR then a PS3 if not I would go with any Upconvert DVD player would work on that size TV.

good stuff Chris, thanks - just dont' want those salespeople at Best Buy telling me I need this and that which isn't really necessary

What do you want for your 60GB PS3? Does it work 100%? Good condition?
Everything works perfect, I didnt get any response on here so it is listed on ebay. I have my game data on an SD card but the new PS3 I got doesnt have a memory card reader.
I only wanted to transfer over my Lego Star Wars data as that was a pain in the arse

I might be upgrading to a Mitsu 73" DLP. Does anyone know of any defects or problems with these? I havent looked them up yet, will be doing that later. Just figured I'd get a jump start on here

The PS3 will output lossless via optical in 2 channels if you set you PS3 to output it. Otherwise you'll get 5.1
Right, my PS3 is hooked up via optical as well and I get 5.1 surround sound.
I've also been thinking about upgrading to a new receiver to take advantage of the better sound. I currently have a HTIB Kenwood system from like 1999. It works OK and I don't really have any complaints. I just would be interested to see what the better sound specs offer.
With the way my movie room is configured, doing anything other than 5.1 wouldn't be possible, so I'm just unsure if I'll really notice a difference.

I hate DLP. When I was looking at TVs 2 years ago, they had the worst picture quality of each type I looked at. They don't (or at least didn't then) render 1080p natively. They use wobulation to make it seem as if they do.

You get a big screen for cheap. I for one dont care for DLP but alot love DLP's..
The PQ IMO is just not there for DLP compared to Plasma and LCD's

Right, DLP picture quality just isn't there when compared to the others. If you really want a projection type TV, I'd look at a Sony SXRD or even a JVC. Those were the two I looked at before. Both render 1080p native or did at the time.
I have a Sony SXRD 50-KDSA2000. I love it. I think it has a great picture and I don't have any problems with it.

If you are going 73" why not just get a projector? And get a 100 in screen. :D
Mits used to make some really nice TV's. I dont know if they still do. My first HD TV was a Mits 55" HD TV and it produced one sick PQ. Not DLP tho.
Here is a review on the 65" which is the same guts as the 73" just bigger screen:
Product Summary
The good: Reproduces a deep level of black; accurate initial grayscale; detailed color and tint adjustments; great connectivity with a total of four HDMI inputs; attractive design.
The bad: Inaccurate color decoding and primary colors that cannot be fixed using main menu adjustments; noisy video processing; smooth 120Hz mode does not remove judder.
The bottom line: The DLP-based Mitsubishi WD-65833 turned in a disappointing performance, especially for the company's flagship rear-projection HDTV.
Some more info:
Performance
We were disappointed at the performance of this set, in most regards. Our biggest issues were with color fidelity because of the poor color decoding and highly inaccurate primary colors. The problems with red and green were really obvious, when compared directly with a Sony KDS-55A3000 SXRD set, which had extremely accurate primary colors. So for the same or less money, whether it be a Samsung DLP or a Sony SXRD set, you can get much better performance.
We did spend some time trying to improve primary colors with Perfect Tint, and those controls did help a little, especially with magenta and red. Green was impossible to improve much at all, however, and yellow was also quite inaccurate, despite our efforts.
Doing a proper job of tweaking primary colors requires expensive gear and a lot of time, and we'd strongly prefer Mitsubishi to simply get it right in the first place. For our complete darkened-room picture settings, click here or scroll down to Tips below the review.
The WD-65833's video processing also leaves a lot to be desired. Compared with the Sony, the Mitsubishi's picture appeared noisy, and engaging the Video Noise feature did not seem to address this issue much at all.
Furthermore, as we noticed on the WD-65734, a resolution chart showed that the highest-resolution areas were negatively affected by what appears to be keystone correction, a feature found on front-projection systems that we always advise people not to use, as it robs the display of resolution and introduces moiré artifacts, as well.
Black-level performance was fine, for its part, but we expected deep blacks because we know the performance level of the current DLP chips from Texas Instruments to be quite good. The grayscale in the Low color temperature setting was quite close to the standard. In fact, this is the one area that Mitsubishi stands out in, relative to most of the competition. Unfortunately, the set's accurate grayscale cannot come close to making up for the combination of inaccurate decoding, and primary and secondary colors.
Moving on to program material, the awesome HD DVD transfer of Seabiscuit looked decent, though the excessively noisy video processing was noticeable in the scene where Jeff Bridges' wife shows him the jockey's uniform. That comes in Chapter 14, which is also a color torture test that contains all of the primary and secondary colors--most all of them at once--when the jockeys are getting ready at the starting gate. With this familiar scene, we found it quite easy to determine that the greenery surrounding the track looked completely wrong.
We also spent a lot of time looking at fast pans, which is where the set's 120Hz processing feature should make an improvement. One example came in the very beginning of The Departed, where the camera pans quickly over a counter of the Luncheonette. Compared with the Sony, the Mitsubishi's smooth 120Hz mode didn't seem to smooth out this motion at all; it appeared just as jerky as before in the same ways that 2:3 pull-down always seems to preserve judder.

Saw Walk Hard and Before the Devil Knows Your Dead over the weekend.
Walk Hard was surprisingly funny. I thought it would be stupid, but it was enjoyable. Some good laughs here and there. Picture quality seemed to be pretty good, though I wasn't really paying much attention.
BTDKYD was pretty boring. I didn't really care for the way the movie was setup with all the various flashbacks and stuff. I liked the acting in the movie, but the story itself is sort of weak. I just don't see that ever really occuring. Granted, I'm willing to suspend belief for all sorts of movies, but when a movie pretends to be grounded in realism, I find it harder to do. It was just sort of meh.
Marissa Tomei probably could have brought a lot more to the movie than her boobs as well. I think she is a good actress, but she got nothing to do in this movie except show her boobs. I'm guessing she needs money, as this role could have been filled by any actress out there.

As for BD being mariginally better than upcoverted DVD, I think that's very dependant on the title and the transfer.

Geez....someone at Sony sleep with this guy's mother or something? Could they have written a more slanted article? The only thing accurate in that article is the fact that new releases are too pricey. I seem to remember DVDs being significantly more than VHS tapes when they first came out as well. I'm sure this will correct itself in time.
The rest of the article seems to focus on Blu-rays DRM and how it somehow is the ultimate evil. Too bad the author forgets to point out that DVDs have protection on them as well (DeCSS). The only difference is that pretty much everyone at this point has figured out how to copy DVDs and the material needed to do so is fairly cheap. The author seems to think the fact that you can't just freely copy BD media is a terrible thing and neglect that you "technically" can't just copy DVD media as well.
Besides one program that, oddly enough the author mentions as capable of cracking BD media, there aren't a lot of options for that yet. A BD player for your PC as well as the BD media aren't really all that cheap yet. Once the software becomes more accessable and the parts and media come down in price, pirating of BD media will be just as easy and frequent as DVDs.
I don't see where BD-J is an issue. I have yet to have any issue playing anything in my PS3. Granted having the multiple profiles is pretty stupid, but I don't see where BD-J really hurts anything. In fact, I tried some of the BD-Live features on Walk Hard this weekend. They seem like they would have worked fine. Granted it was dumb and seemingly a waste of time to not just include those things on the disc in the first place, but it did work.

From a website:
With the TX-SR605, Onkyo has incorporated high end features in a reasonably priced home theater receiver, such as HDMI 1.3a video and audio capabilities, Faroudja DCDi video processing, incorporation of both XM and Sirius satellite radio, and iPOD connection compatibility. If the TX-SR605 delivers what Onkyo promises, the bar would certainly be raised in terms of features and performance per dollar, and would certainly meet the needs of most mainstream home theater consumers.
Great receiver.
I think this is going to be the way to go...

Given this sale finally took hold at Fry's and via price matching this weekend, it's also possible that they sold out of them via the price matching. Maybe Sbrooks1 would be so kind to shed more insight on that?

You would technically need more than one HDMI cable. I wasn't sure if you were stating things exactly or not. You need one from the receiver to the TV and then one (or another connecting cable) from each component to the receiver.

So....I don't really NEED a 605, right? Like Grif said I just need an HDMI receiver that can accept PCM?
Or do I need a 605? Or do I want a 605?

The PS3 decodes both TruHD and DTS-HD MA and sends it via PCM. You cannot bitstream with the PS3 as the HDMI is not a true HDMI 1.3a port.
If you're the patient type, wait for the 606 to come out... 4 HDMI 1.3a ins. :)

I believe the A2 does the decoding as well... it doesn't have an HDMI 1.3a port thus it can't bitstream to the receiver for decoding.
If you really wanted to, you "could" get away with a receiver that doesn't decode either TruHD or DTS-HD MA as the PS3 and A2 are doing all the work.

Yeah that's my main question....would I be missing out on anything if I went this route? I don't plan on owning another blu-ray or HD DVD player other than what I have, so if a cheaper HDMI, PCM-accepting receiver will basically give me the same result in the end (even if the means are different), shouldn't I go that route?
What am I missing?

I'd stick with the receiver doing the decoding. Usually you want the receiver to do the decoding of your material if possible. Typically, receivers have better quality in this area.
This could just be my common misconception though.
Related to the discussion, Onkyo makes a great receiver, so you should go with them versus another brand that you might get for a bit cheaper.

For Circuit City's current sale price of $270, I'd be getting all this...
105 watts per channel, 7.1
8 channel LPCM through HDMI
3 HDMI inputs
This would really be all I need, I'd imagine....the players would do the decoding and the Sony receiver would display MULTI-CHANNEL PCM, but it would in essense be the TRUEHD or DTS-HD MA, correct?

2) Is there a difference with letting my player decode vs letting my receiver decode?
The simple answer is no. A more complex answer is.. on the True HD side of things there isn’t much difference since most players decode True HD format inside the player. However, DTS HD MA has been the tricky format many players leave out of the decoding equation.
UPDATE: As of Playstation 3 firmware version 2.30 which is out now, the PS3 can internally decode DTS HD MA tracks and this is no longer an inconvenience for PS3 owners.
If you own a lossless bitstream player that send lossless bitstream out and allow your player to decode DTS HD MA on the receiver (like the ones outlined below in, HI DEFINITION AUDIO QUESTIONS> Question 5), then YES.. for those movies the audio will sound better. (But even then, if you own one of those new players, it can decode those formats internally as well.) In the end it’s a novelty to allow your receiver to decode vs letting your player decode. If there are any improvements to be heard, they are slight, not vast.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Toshiba-Regza-47-LCD-HDTV-47HL167/sem/rpsm/oid/184600/catOid/-12869/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do
How can I turn that deal down?
aka Tell me what's wrong with that TV, or what I can buy for better.
lol.
That seems to be a "holy crap" amazing deal.
The only things I'd say is I much prefer plasma over LCD, but that's personal preference...and I don't know about LCD televisions, but I know for LCD monitors 8ms response time isn't that great.
As for a better deal for the value, I doubt it, Toshiba in my opinion falls into the big 5 brands that I'd blindly trust for a new TV (Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Panasonic, Toshiba)

Thanks for that!!

Not that it really matters now, but....
Although it's all water under the bridge now, we still find it interesting that Viacom's recent earnings statement confirmed that Paramount received compensation for dumping Blu-ray. But contrary to the New York Times article, Variety is reporting that it was only $29 Million, instead of $150 Million. This is of course only cash, and it is still entirely possible that the other $121 Million included future revenues that didn't materialize once things fell apart, but we have a hard time believing Paramount received that much in promotional services or free replication. And while the Warner payoff rumors weren't from a source as sound as the NYT, we'll still be keeping an eye on revenue statements from Engadget and Warner's shared parent company all the same.

Well, I finally joined the party. Went and got the Sony 720 and hooked it up just now. Finished the calibration and gave Twister a whirl, and I have to say noticed the difference between whatever the default track was and the DolbyTrueHD track immediately.
I switched back and forth about 5 times, and I now know what I've been missing. Grif you were absolutely right, the speakers just come alive. There's more force, clarity, just a fuller presence of sound.
I also cranked it up, and if the receiver carried through the opening scene of Twister without shutting into protection mode, I think I finally hooked one of these things up properly :)

I think Oak was asking on one of the last pages, but for anyone interested, my quick take on Twister the disc.
PQ: 4/5. It's really a nice transfer. It has very nice depth, good colors when there are bold colors, and I noticed very little grain throughout the movie (don't remember seeing it in the theaters to compare).
AQ: 5/5. Of course, this was my first time hearing DolbyTrueHD, so anything probably would've gotten a 5, but it really shines here. This movie has always been known for it's high quality audio, and the blu-ray just kicks it up a notch for the home theater crowd.

HOLY CRAP!!!!
Dear Criterion Collection Newsletter subscriber,
We’ve got some exciting news for this fall, and we wanted you to hear it first.
Our first Blu-ray discs are coming! We’ve picked a little over a dozen titles from the collection for Blu-ray treatment, and we’ll begin rolling them out in October. These new editions will feature glorious high-definition picture and sound, all the supplemental content of the DVD releases, and they will be priced to match our standard-def editions.
Here’s what’s in the pipeline:
The Third Man
Bottle Rocket
Chungking Express
The Man Who Fell to Earth
The Last Emperor
El Norte
The 400 Blows
Gimme Shelter
The Complete Monterey Pop
Contempt
Walkabout
For All Mankind
The Wages of Fear
Alongside our DVD and Blu-ray box sets of The Last Emperor, we’ll also be putting out the theatrical version as a stand-alone release in both formats, priced at $39.95. Our Blu-ray release of Walkabout will be an all-new edition, featuring new supplements as well as a new transfer; we will also release an updated anamorphic DVD of Nicolas Roeg’s outback masterpiece at the same time.

What is the point in this? Do people really play music in the BD players? I guess I hadn't really thought of that as even an option.
From my perspective, I'd rather have a multiple CD set that I can rip to my iPod or something like that.

Maybe it'll sound better with more room on the disc.
You do realize, on a bit of a side note, that every time you rip a CD to your iPod it flattens the hell out of the music and you lose something like 90% of the data.

That's if you use iTunes to rip it. If you use a better program and rip @ 320kb/s then it's much better.

Alight guys, we got in a new end cap demo of the new 46" Samsung Series 7 (750 series) at Best Buy and it's a stunner! Lots of built in crap I would probably never use like the games and recipes but the picture looks outstanding! I can get the 52" version for $2395 with my discount. :D Any opinions on this yet?

Plus that 120 Hz thing still looks funny everytime I watch it.

Yeah 120hz would definitely be turned off for movies. I might turn it on for sitcoms though. Why do you think plasmas are the way to go over LCD?
PrimeBane
05-08-2008, 11:49 AM
In my research:
1. Plasmas has better color recreation (billions of colors vs millions) and picture
2. There are no refresh issues with plasmas
3. Better contrast ratios (although these are pretty close now)
4. Better viewing angles (one again, these are very close now as well)
5. Plasma is just sexier to say than LCD :D

Right, but I don't use iTunes to rip them. Plus, I'll trade some loss in audio quailty for the portability that I have using my iPod or whatever. For me, being able to listen to music on my PS3 in my game room, doesn't really do much for me. If I'm in my game room, I'm either using the PS3 or watching TV, so either the PS3 would already be in use, or I likely want the sound from the TV show anyway.

Can't wait to check out a DTS-HD MA track!
Jay....are you having the PS3 do the decoding...then just passing through the 720?
I wasn't sure the 720 was able to decode that many different tracks. Hell, I was surprised to see it had 3 HDMI "Ins". I see it on Sony Style for only $299...and I have that much in rewards points. Wondering if it's a solid receiver.

English......do you speak it mutha******
Come on man. Put it in simple terms.
So......what you're saying is that the PS3 MUST do all of the decoding. So therefore...you do not need a receiver that can decode "X" amount of tracks....as that won't matter.
So....say the PS3 decodes (just an example here) Super Hi Fi Track.......but yet you're receiver doens't. If the PS3 decodes it...and sends it to your receiver...your receiver will still pass it thorugh to the speakers...correct?
If so...then I'm gonna jump on that 720......3 HDMI ins for $300 ($100 an input) is good enough for me.

All you need is a receiver that can pass through the PCM signal.
Your example is correct.
As for the 720, I'm loving it so far. It's performing very well and it's powerful. My only concern before buying it was Sony's somewhat negative reputation for being too sensitive and going into protect mode, but I watch all of Twister in Dolby TrueHD at fairly loud levels and there was no issue.
I've only had the thing 2 days, but so far I'd recommend it without a doubt.

All those still hanging onto your obsolete vintage first generation HD DVD players have a reason to plug in the network cable and turn them on one more time, as Toshiba has issued a version 3.0 firmware update for the HD-A1, HD-XA1 and HD-D1. Similar to an earlier update for the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on, the patch tweaks network connectivity a bit as well as clearing up some HDMI handshaking issues. The update quietly came online April 26, and of course can be issued by burning it to a CD or calling Toshiba and requesting a disc by mail. So go ahead, pour a glass of wine, dim the lights and celebrate a little quality time with a two year-old box that still offers features some new players can't match.

Paramount entire Blu-ray catalog back in stock.
When Paramount makes a decision it really gets behind it, and just as quickly as Paramount titles disappeared from store shelves back in August, they'll all re-appear in the next few weeks. With the initial Paramount Blu-ray re-commitment just a few weeks ago, we learned that 8 of the 32 previously releases titles would be available on May 20th, and now the studio has confirmed that the entire Blu-ray back catalog will be available by the end of May. The titles will be true reissues and identical to the original release -- so if you didn't like the first one, you won't like these either. We're sure plenty of recent Blu-ray adopters are happy to get their hands on titles like Mission Impossible trilogy and The Italian Job, but we'd be more excited to see some of the more recent Paramount releases go Blu, like say, Transformers. But hey, at least we can finally get rid of that annoying asterisks on our weekly releases post.

As for Transformers, with the sequel in production I wouldn't be surprised to see PM/DM to hold off on a BD copy until just before the new movie hits theatres (along with a new DVD version of course).

Sony firmware update for BDP-S300
Heads-up, BDP-S300 owners -- Sony has just unleashed a new firmware update for your machine. Posted today, the v3.90 update will bring you, well, we're not exactly sure what. According to users at AVSForum, the general consensus is that TrueHD support just has to be in there, but Sony's servers are so glacially slow that no one has been able to confirm or deny just yet. Once your download manages to complete (hey, it takes awhile when it's being uploaded from what appears to be a 14.4k modem connection), feel free to discuss any notable changes in comments below.

I'm a cheapass to start with, but I totally agree. I'm not buying a new BD when it is like $30, unless it is something I have to have. There are a few movies like that coming out in the future (Iron Man, Indiana Jones, Batman 1 & 2) but other than stuff that I know I love, I'm not doing it.
I've purposely not bought some movies, so I can really take advantage of a good B1G1 when I see it. Previously, I had to buy a few movies that I never saw and ones that I was only moderately interested in owning. Next time there is a good B1G1, I'll have a bunch of movies I actually want.

K-MART $5.00 OFF ANY blu-ray disc 5/11-5/17
People are saying they have Twister for $20.99 - $5.00 = A great deal. I will have to check it out tomorrow. Have not been to a Kmart in years.
I think there's 1 K-Mart left in the area, but it'd cost more than $5 round trip for me to get there...so.....

Im bummed at the crappy reviews the Ozzfest Blu Ray got:(
I'm usually a pretty big fan of a good number of bands that tour on Ozzfest, and I had planned on picking this up, but the set list of what's on the DVD really turned me off.

There is no "HDTV" antenna that is better than a "regular" antenna. Anything you read to that effect is just marketing. Any indoor antenna that will reach will work. You may already even have an old one lying around in your house.
Use www.antennaweb.org to find out how big of an antenna you'll need. I live in a major city, and a $20 antenna I bought at Circuit City gets me all the local channels in HD.

I don't even use an antenna - I get my local stations in HD over basic cable (I don't have an HD set-top box).

True. I had a $5 antenna that worked great.

Anyone have any experience using a plasma TV as a PC monitor?
Mind you, the PC will basically only be hooked up for gaming - It's not like I'll be surfing the web for 8 hours on it.
The more I think about it, it's basically 100% gaming computer - no use for it for anything else.
Will a DVI --> HDMI converter get the job done, and will everything be scaled properly on a 1080p set?
Help :D

I thought it was funny. And it's not too bad to own, especially when you get it for free with your 5 free ones:DLOL u and Wild Hogs. Its one of those BR's you will be holding onto for awhile. I have it on BR and sad to say I enjoyed it.

I get incredibly nauseous in the theater and had to keep my eyes closed a lot.
I was hoping I would be able to watch it on BD at home and not be so sick watching on a smaller screen.
You do not give me hope.

Is this for your bedroom or your guest bedroom?
IMO, it's good enough for casual viewing... I'm not sure I'd want it as my main viewing panel however.
But $1300 for a 47" 1080p tv, I think one can overlook any flaws this set might have. :)
You could always ship it to me first for a full hands on review. ;)
My Best Buy had a special on this one for $1299.99 new.
Toshiba - REGZA 46" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV Model: 46RV530U

With 36 months no interest, I was pretty pleased.
It's obviously not state of the art. But it's just for my bedroom, so I think I'll be ok. My only HD source on it will be cable HD. And I have a lot of 4:3 Tv Shows on DVD I hate watching stretched on my plasma. So now I'll have a place to hide and watch them worry-free at OAR.
I haven't hooked it up yet, but I'll give a full review when I do!

It's $23 on Amazon....so you could print out a target.com or borders.com search of it and price match. That's typically what I do.

I'm really on the fence with Master and Commander. I traded in my DVD version in anticipation of it's blu-ray release, but the reviews have been all over the place. The latest one seems pretty accurate, and if so, I'm not sure I can spend $30 right now on it.
