Target.com has both for $39.99 and Walmart.com, priced just 12 cents cheaper, has them as "out of stock", something BB will not price match (I worked there in college so I do know that). Also, the manufacturer coupon states, as the thread pointed out, that it can't be combined with any other offer. This guy got very lucky and I'm willing to bet he'll be in the minority on this one.
heh... SBrooks1 works at Best Buy now. :p

Does anyone else HATE Nic Cage as much as I do? I wouldn't buy either of those National Treasure movies if they were the only two Blu-rays on Earth, or for that matter the only two movies on Earth.

No Rock = no purchase!
Yeah thats usually my code of buying when it comes to wrestling. I grew out of it years ago but The Rock and Hulk Hogan always have a way of drawing me back in. But with neither of them being at this wrestlemania it's definately a very questionable purchase. I did want to see the Flair retirement match but thats about it.

Seriously...I'm like 2 months behind on the Blu Ray schedule....which is perfectly ok with me. I'm seeing the stuff that came out like 2months ago on sale...and picking up those titles. I'll be grabbing everything thats coming out now....in like 2 months....when it's cheaper :)

Rock and Stone Cold being gone just killed it for me and I haven't followed WWE for many years now. I passively look in on threads here to see who's doing what. I'd like to see the Flair retirement match but it isn't a must-own for me.

Well, it is well known that he is a comic nerd and basically did Ghost Rider on the cheap, because that is one of his favorite comics. I'm sure he was quite cool to see and talk to there.
However, he continues to suck in every movie he appears in. Really, I don't think I can despise how much I hate him. I always pray he doesn't infiltrate the cast of a movie I actually want to see, so that it isn't runied and I can't see it.

The Flair retirement match and apparently his HOF speech (I didn't see this part) are great. You could find the match on a torrent or youtube though and save yourself the cash. I heard the MITB match was good too if you like tables and ladders.

^ Haha.
So I was able to get BB to price match the National Treasure Blus by taking in the Target.com print out. The girl at the counter wasn't going for it and said she'd have to check with a manager and luckily one walked by who knew it was legit, who knew it had been printed out today (which I explained to her several times as it said "in stock" and not "pre-order") and put in all his codes in order for the price match to be accepted. After the girl processed it, the computer then automatically took off the extra $5 per movie, which again she almost questioned (she paused for about 10 seconds or so before asking for my card). So like I said above, the guy who got the deal plus the $10 manufacturer coupon got lucky. But $32 and change after tax for both movies still ain't bad.

So.....anybody seen Shinobi?
I really enjoyed Shinobi. Some really awesome characters and Tak Sakaguchi makes his awesome usual appearance. It's got some great action sequences and would look good in HD. It's a little Romeo and Juliet with a Japanese flair. I know a lot of my friends have no patience for foreign movies especially when it comes to reading subtitles but it does come with an English audio option. I'm thinking about picking this title up.

Caved is really a harsh way of putting it....I prefer to say I "opted" to get Wrestlemania. I had a $100 gift card to Walmart and to me gift cards are alot like a hot potato, it's not something I want to hold onto for too long.
So I went there with every intention of using the whole thing picking up National Treasure 1&2, Blades of Glory, Bee Movie, etc and it would be good and done. My Walmart only got in Face Off and Wrestlemania this week and I got flustered and had to make a split second decision. I couldn't leave Walmart empty handed with a gift card in my wallet that I didn't want to come home with. So Wrestlemania it was....

Hard to argue if you have a gift card.
Chugga
05-21-2008, 05:04 PM
I don't view giftcards as real money, they are kinda like monopoly money that I can somehow use on real life items. It's why I can never hold onto store credit anywhere whether it be gamestop or a gift card to best buy, walmart, whatever. If all I have is money in my wallet and I go to best buy I'll be like "ehh the Orphanage looks like an awesome movie, but ehh not really feeling the price". If I go that exact same day with a gift card...."holy crap only $40 for the orphanage? what a deal!!! I think I have $40 monopoly dollars left over, lets get it".

Never seen it, of all the movies in that pic the only 2 I've ever seen was Face/Off and V for Vendetta. I blind buy 99% of the stuff I get since I don't go to the movie theaters or bother watching stuff on tv.
Beer League is explained by some random coupons that I had stored up for Borders. They send me these 20-40% off coupons all the time and for once I was like "screw it I'm going to use one today" and they had the Orphanage (not pictured) and Beer League so I figured why not.

It really is a must have if you didn't have the DVD. Even if you have it on dvd, $13 something off amazon is not a bad price for the upgrade.
I have the movie on DVD and it's well worth buying it again on BR. I just wish that some of the other characters had more screen time to showcase their powers. But other than that, awesome movie.

It's been a while since we've had some Hi Def news... so um... found this...
Vaguest news ever:
New, Hi-Def Movies May Come To Cable
The major studios plan to offer high-definition movies on cable and satellite on demand even before they are released on DVD and Blu-ray. As reported by Video Business, the MPAA has filed a petition with the FCC seeking permission to use anti-copying encryption, currently barred by FCC regulations, for the high-definition video service. "In order to make this extremely high-value content available for in-home viewing at such an early window, protections are necessary to deter unauthorized copying or redistribution of the content," the MPAA petition said. Few details about the high-definition service were included in the petition, which said merely that if it is approved, "each film studio will make its own decision about how, when and with which partners it might use this option."

No way I'll buy the Wii fit. I hit the gym 4 days a week anyway in addition to softball and ice hockey. I have absolutely no need for it.
well then it's obviously not meant for you...it's more for the people that don't have as much free time as you do. what about mario kart? do you have any need for that or do you drive real go karts? i don't mean to pick on you, but why do poeple feel the need to give such a definitive stance on this game? it's selling like crazy so it's apparently a good idea for nintendo.

What's wrong with stating why I won't buy it? I don't have a lot of free time, but I use the time I do have productively (gym) and to do the things I want (play sports). I'm not an avid gamer. The Wii Fit does not appeal to me for several reasons, which I listed above. I see this being a huge fad game where people will run out and buy it and barely use it. Where in my post did I say it wasn't a good idea? Sorry to offend you.

I think the Wii Fit is great for stay at home mom/dads or people that dont want to waste time going to the gym and can stay home and do it.
I am the same way as wingnut. Gym 4 days a week, Softball 2 nights a week and football on Sundays. So I have no use for it. But the GF wants it. She just prefers to workout in the comfort of her own home then going to the gym and getting hit on all the time.
I think its a great idea by Nintendo. Hell if the GF picks it up i might try the yoga. I need to get more flexible anyway :)

If you have the backstage pass, you save 10% on everything. And they put their new releases on sale at $29.99 the same as Best Buy. So, in theory, a new release would be $3 than Best Buy at FYE if you're a backstage member.
Plus they have good used prices and they stand behind them for 30 days.
Overall they are very expensive, but there is some value in shopping there if you find the right deal.

Transformers on Blu-ray = September 2nd!!
We hope it's not AstroTrain, of course! But it probably makes sense that we should, at the very least, expect Transformers and G.I. Joe classic releases to come out on DVD in time to tie in with upcoming new theatrical films of those properties, which hit the box office in 2009. We've gotten advanced, inside word (you heard it here first!) that the 2007 Transformers live-action film with Shia LaBeouf will be coming to Blu-ray Disc on September 2nd, in a 2-Disc Special Edition (similar to last year's HD DVD version)...but its doubtful that Hasbro would be ready with their first "G1" Transformers cartoon release on DVD by that time, to tie in with that release. You never know, though! Stay tuned for new reports, as developments occur.

You want to pay 3 or 4x's the amount for a movie that looks and sounds the same because it's in a blu case - have at it.
So funny and true. The other day I was looking at an HD DVD with a $17.99 price tag. I picked it up and placed it beside its Blu-ray equivalent for $32.99 and thought, "Hmmmmm, same movie, same features - which price looks better to me?" No brainer there.

So true.
I hope for BR fanboys sake that Transformers Blows away HD DVD's transformers. Lets hope Bay put his money where his mouth is on this title. I might get the BR version if its THAT much better. Only time will tell.
If the karma gods have been paying attention, the disk will be encoded in 1080i and still with the DD plus track. :D

Transformers is already confirmed to have a high bit rate encode that was specifically for Blu-ray and it will have an uncompressed PCM soundtrack (just like Blades of Glory does) that will put the Dolby Digital Plus soundtrack on the HD DVD to shame. :D

From Amir on TF... I believe the orginal source is from AVS.
There were two versions of Transformers. One in VC-1 and faithful to the source. And one in AVC and not.
The creative decision maker picked the latter which goes to show you, that it is not just the users that might crave softer, more pleasant images.
Michael Bay,you FAIL.
So Brooksie "could" be right if Paramount goes with the VC-1 encode rather than the AVC encode... at least PQ wise.
As for AQ, I imagine there will be very subtle differences between the DD+ and whatever lossless they put on, but I imagine in a blind "taste test" very few will be able to tell any difference what-so-ever between the two.

I was just commenting in general, not specifically about you holding it to a higher standard. I did find much of the movie to have that "by the numbers" feel. I thought they lifted too much from the other movies, it just didn't feel original. But I did still like some of the action and the interaction between characters.

Taken from a transcript of a chat room from Sideshow/WETA regarding the upcoming "Hobbit" films
- icaroz: Will the Ring trilogy get a blu-ray release around the time of Hobbit? or sooner?
Peter_Jackson: Hi Icaroz - We are working on a blu ray version of the LOTR trilogy with Warner Bros at the moment, not sure when it is due for release. It certainly won't be this year.
Reguba: Will the Hobbit get an extended edition like LOTR?
Guillermo_del_Toro: That one is REALLY too early to answer... but being a DVD freak (now a B-Ray freak) I think that if you have enough alternative material you can make it accesible on DVD (or B-R) format... Is not a priori that one decides this.
If anyone wants to read the full transcript...you can here,

Can't wait to see a side-by-side PQ comparison of the blu-ray and HD DVD. I'm sure someone will do it. It will look exactly the same, i don't care what bit rate the blu-ray gets.
As for the AQ, it might be a step up, but who knows. But didn't the HD DVD win a yearly audio award, beating out many others that were uncompressed?
I can't believe your still doggin' on HD DVD Brooks....might be time to let it go. Are we going to have to hear this like a broken record every time an HD DVD title gets replaced with the blu-ray?
Don't get me wrong the mix on Transformers for a DD+ soundtrack was great. But it could have sounded much better if we could have a soundtrack closer to the master. The LFE channel was really lacking though and I hope that's fixed. As for me doggin' on HD DVD I only do it every so often. ;)

I'm sure you and I would probably agree on the same four parts. One happens pretty early on involving a refrigerator. The rest are all in the middle to end. By the time the worst of all of them occured, I had already stopped caring.

Assuming johnny and I are talking about the same thing, the base is completely off with Blackouts shockwaves... in the theatre it was easily the coolest sound effect in the movie (it felt like the wave wave going right through you and exploading). I was very much looking forward to it on the HD DVD, but no matter what how I set up my subwoofer, I can't get the same effect. :(

Beetlejuice on BR makes no sense as a purchase. You can buy the DVD for $5. That one is not worth the upgrade.
The worthiness of a movie being upgraded to Blu-ray is of course subjective. I doubt a lot of people thought Short Circuit was worthy but apparently Image Entertainment did. Beetlejuice will sell Short Circuit under the table easily. There are thousands of catalog titles that have been released on DVD over the years because DVD is/was the standard for movie viewing. People expected any and all movies on DVD because it is/was the standard. Now Blu-ray is the disc based standard for watching movies in HD. We should expect these same movies on Blu-ray. If you choose to buy them or not is your decision. ;)

Is Michael Clayton worth $25. Best Buy has it on "sale" right now and I was considering it as a blind buy.
It's a "drama" driven movie.....not a whole lot of action. There's no "shoot ups" or "gratuitous sex scenes"....but it is a well acted, well directed movie. I liked it...but it's not something I'm going to watch again and again. As a matter of fact..you can have mine for...let's say $13. That should about cover the gas for me to drive up to the Stuart news :p

Oh you're absolutely right, but when I think "high def" I don't see Beetlejuice as a prime candidate for a picture upgrade worthy of $20-$30. I know there are people like you who will buy every Blu release that a studio throws out (and that isn't me taking a cheapshot BTW) but I'm not one of those people. A substantial upgrade (i.e. picture, sound, extras, etc) are what I feel warrants an upgrade and I don't see how Beetlejuice could possibly fall into that category. Just my 2 cents.

I think that's one of the reasons a lot of people (like myself) jumped on Short Circuit blu-ray, because it could be had on amazon for $11.
I'd upgrade almost anything for the right price. For Beetlejuice, I'd say the $14-$16 range would get me to bite.

I'd jump on Beetlejuice for $10-$12, but nothing more than that.

I like Beetlejuice but it's not one of those movie that I really cared to see with the HD treatment. I've realized that I'm very picky when it comes to what movies I will upgrade to HD. Most action and horror are guaranteed upgrades, but dramas and comedies not so much. There's no way in the world I can ever justify buying a BD version of Beaches or Fried Green Tomatoes.

The ONLY reason Short Circuit is on BR is because of Wall-E coming. Or whatever that movie is called. The just rushed it the door.
Neither Beetlejuice or Short Circuit will sell in large #'s

Hmmm....not sure you should be owning these movies on ANY format. :p

I've wanted to watch this as well, but I've heard nothing but bad things about it.

I own Fried Green Tomatoes on DVD. Of course, like Oaktown, it is a movie for the wife. ;)

Precisely the reason I do blind buy quite a bit.
I'm considering this but I need to convince myself that I don't need to go to the theater. I really need to see movies like Iron Man, Batman, etc. right away. I'm not sure I can wait the 6 months it seems to take for them to appear on Blu-ray.
Of course, these are the movies that seem to me the most irritating to go to. I suppose if I could find a more off-peak time to go, it wouldn't be so bad, but even when I do that, there seems to be that one idiot.
I think my wife would be happier. She hates going to the movies with me I think.

Hey guys, I've been looking at this Yamaha receiver at Best Buy. It supports DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD. This review says it supports PCM too. But does it support it through HDMI from the PS3?

This review mentions PCM but I'm not sure if it supports it through HDMI?
Advanced audio decoding of uncompressed sounds through the receiver built-in decoders is marvelous. Clarity in low frequencies, parametric and higher frequencies such as treble is felt right away. Six channel analog processing of PCM audio which is already decoded inside the HD DVD or Blu-ray players is also impressive but the only problem is that it is limited to six channels only. Digital Bitstream audio decoding for the lossless sounds can be spread to 7.2 channels if the source encoding is done in 7.1 channels.

If this thing will support PCM through HDMI then I'll buy it with a quickness. Also everyone talks about the Onkyo 605. How does this Yamaha compare?

Sbrooks how much of a discount do you get off that price?
Because I would go with the Onkyo 705 in that price range off amazon with 1 extra HDMI input.

Do you have a PS3? If so, you don't need a receiver that decodes those HD audio formats. ALL you need is the ability to pass through PCM.
Your choice, but you could save yourself a couple hundred bucks. That Sony I got has 3 HDMI inputs. I know Best Buy sells that one, too, I saw it in the store.
But if you're not using a PS3, then I don't know, you might need a receiver like that.

I don't own Beelejuice yet, but I'd like to. If I'm going to buy it at this point, I might as well buy the BD. If I already owned it, I most likely would not upgrade to it.
