Hey guys, I've been looking at this Yamaha receiver at Best Buy. It supports DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD. This review says it supports PCM too. But does it support it through HDMI from the PS3?

It should... worst comes to worst, take it back. :)

A little fyi on the Yamaha receivers... you'll have to determine for yourself if the problem is significant enough to avoid the purchase.

Yeah, 60GB PS3 here. So which receiver do you have?

The Sony 720. It got it when it was on sale from Circuit City for $270, plus they had $15 off every $100 purchase so it was only $255. You could probably get a comparable or better price with your BB discount, since it only retails for $300.

I love it so far, by the way.

Nice, so with a PS3 hooked up via HDMI I'll get uncompressed PCM, Dolby TrueHD AND DTS-HD MA? How do they display on the receiver? Do they say PCM, TrueHD and DTS-HD MA? Or something else?

Home theater question....

Currently I have a HTIB Kenwood system from about....wow....8-9 years ago. It does DD 5.1 and DTS 5.1, so it has served me pretty well. It has a ton of inputs, no HDMI obviously, but I've never had a problem really hooking anything up to it.

How much better are the new receivers that do all these new HD audio specs? If I'm still going to have a 5.1 surround system, does it really make that much of a difference? I'd like to do 7.1, but my movie room configuration doesn't really lend itself to it.

Should I get a new receiver and new speakers, or would a new receiver with my current speakers be good enough? Should I get a new HTIB system, but a nicer one, like some of the Onkyo ones I see?

Thoughts opinions??

I imagine the majority here will say it's well worth the upgrade.

While I don't have a new receiver (yet), I am able to take advantage of lossless via my XA2 (and previously my A35) with anologue outs and PCM inputs on my old Yamaha receiver. Perhaps it's just me, but the leap from lossy to lossless wasn't huge in my opinion. Was it better? Definately. Is it something I'd run out and drop X number of dollars on a new receiver right away because the sound made me cream myself? No.

I think anyone would definately benefit from lossless, but IMO, it's not the grand leap a lot of people on the web make it out to be. Then again, maybe it's just me... :)

Remember the PS3 can not bitstream so your little lights on the Receiver will never light up. No biggie really. But you will still get all the great sounds. Have you updated the PS3 to the newest FW?

On the receiver I think it reads Multichannel but if you hit Display on the PS3 remote it will say PCM

See I was one that thought how much of a difference can there be. Once I upgraded from my Onkyo HTIB to my Onkyo 705 and Polk's the sound is soooooooo much better. To me its a huge difference.

Perhaps the difference is my speakers... I have a pretty good set of Energys for the last 10 years and they've treated me very well. There is a very noticable difference between them and my 360 HTIB that I use upstairs.

Of course. I always upgrade firmwares when I can. Hmmm, I'd like to have the receiver say each codec it's playing but being able to buy it now is a nice incentive.

Then you will need to get a standalone that can Bitstream. The PS3 probably WILL NEVER be able to. It lacks the hardware to do it from my understanding.

Honeslty its no biggie you are still getting the best sound.

Question for those that have sent in rebates for Disney/BV movies... what do they require? I see they've finally included Canada and I hope to be able to take advantage of the offer with Chronicles of Narnia. Do you just send in the proof of purchase or are they jerks and require a receipt?

The require original receipt, UPC from blu-ray and UPC from DVD.

If you watch SD DVD's switch it over to Bitstream

Some older HDMI receivers won't handle the PCM, i believe, but all the newish ones should (last year's and this year's models). If all else fails and you can't find what you're looking for online, call up someone who sells it and ask them.

I agree, and this may just be me but I got into HD for the leap in picture. The sound was more of a cool perk if anything. It was enough to finally replace my HTIB to a HD audio setup (5.1) but I would have done that anyway. I like playing around with stuff trying to get that perfect picture but audio is just a huge drag for me and once I have it set up I just leave it alone for the most part.

It was funny when I was looking around at speakers for the first time in 7 years, totally blind.... yeah, I did listening tests at various chains and finally picked out a 5.1 package. The salesman was digging around for half an hour climbing the top of the aisles and put them all on a flatbed cart and then I changed my mind and bought a completely different set of speakers... oops, sorry!

I just picked the 3 up that I was missing as singles. I kinda wanted the boxed set but it made no sense when I already had the first movie.

The only downside was the singles are priced so awful regardless of where you go. $25 at both Best Buy and Walmart. Luckily I got Best Buy to price match Walmart online so the hit wasn't as bad.

Edit: I see Walmart online is pretty cheap as well. Nice BB priced match at that price.

In my opinion if you've got an old receiver and you need something new for more HDMI inputs, why not go for the one that'll give you lossless audio, as well. You can hear a a difference. Certain sounds are crisper/clearer and the overall sound is a bit more full if that makes sense.

That said, though, I still think the difference in audio compared to the difference betweed SD and HD visual is not as large. And I wouldn't rebuy a movie I already owned with a DTS 5.1 mix if the only difference were a lossless audio track. Some absoutely would, which is cool. But for me it'd also have to have a nice picture remastering and an addition of new documentaries about the film or something to justify that type of double dip.

WingNut 25
05-28-2008, 04:07 PM
I'd never double dip for sound.

Walmart.com has the new Rambo for $22 and the 1-3 set for $33. Gonna price match at BB this week.

Chugga
05-28-2008, 04:19 PM
I don't own any HD DVD's and only own 4 DVD's so me double dipping is basically an impossibility. But still sound wouldn't really be a deciding factor for me.

Only time I really care about sound and would go out of my way to get the best possible would be for a big action movie or a war movie. I like hearing the bombs drop all around me and hear gun fire go off. Oh also horror movies I guess. 30 Days of Night had a really good use of surround sound. Pearl Harbor is another favorite of mine sound wise.

Hey Jay, do you leave your PS3 set to output PCM even for DVD's as well?

I bet most do and dont understand that you should change it to Bitstream. You can play around with it but you will notice a big difference from PCM to Bitstream for SD DVD's.

I am speaking of the Onkyo line not sure if its the same for the Sony

Taken from AVsforums:

The following only applies to people who DO NOT have a lossless bitstream player:

There is only 2 instances when you want to turn off PCM and switch to your lossy bitstream output setting.
A) If you are playing older Standard Definition (SD) movies, it still gives you a benefit of setting your player to bitstream so you gain ability to decode Dolby Digital and DTS on your receiver.
B) Depending on your player type it may not support certain HD audio formats (ex. DTS HD MA) and in those instances the player replaces that audio with a lossy core track instead of the HD audio track. Because of this, it that may sound better by setting your player to lossy bitstream.

Congrats on your new Toy..

The big news is on the audio front where Paramount is taking a big step forward. Not only will Top Gun on Blu-ray include the same 5.1 Dolby TrueHD mix from the HD DVD version, it will also include a 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio mix as well.

Guys, my living room has experienced HD audio and it is good.........DAMN GOOD!! First I screened Kung Fu Hustle....wow. The Lion's Roar scream the landlord lady does is unbelievable. Then I popped in Across the Universe; a TrueHD title that always bugged me because of how quiet it was using my crappy optical connection. Now the movie screams with life. All the songs are blaring loud and crystal clear. TrueHD CAN sound good! Then it put in Hairspray. This one didn't seem all that different to me honestly. Sounded really loud and clear but not a huge difference. Then it was on to Independence Day and the initial attack scene. I'm running my surrounds wireless and they bottomed out before during this scene and they REALLY did this time with more bandwidth trying to go to them. Wireless surrounds is going bye bye this weekend. ID4 sounded damn good. Much better than I ever heard it before.

All in all I'm very pleased. It's almost a night and day difference. I was able to hook my 360 up via component and hook the optical cable into the SAT IN. Then via the menu tell the receiver that for this component in (Video 1) to use the optical audio going into SAT IN. Very cool. Gears of War sounds amazing now! I can hear people walking behind me much clearer now. Amazing.

Thanks again guys for letting me know about this receiver. It's made everything so much better for me! :D

I ALWAYS enjoy these types of movies. But this one sucked. Ok maybe not sucked but not that enjoyable. I think if they have someone else besides Jerry Sienfield (sp?) I might have enjoyed it a little more. His voice was not good for the part.

Yeah, I guess what I was trying to say in that mess I wrote was that I like good PQ and AQ, but will sorta pay more attention to the PQ. And I agree the difference is definitely there between lossy and lossless, not saying there isn't one.

The audio would have to be really, really crappy (to really, super awesome) for me to justify double dipping on any title.

Well much like most of the Rambo's before it, when he's stealthy the sound is good but nothing to write home about. Give him a bow and arrow or a machine gun though and the audio really kicks in and will blow your house down.

I honestly thought the new Rambo would suck but it was far more awesome then I could have ever imagined. The body count is so high you'd think Legolas and Aragorn were backing him up.

No part of what I'm about to post is a spoiler but I'm going to say SPOILER just in case you don't realize Rambo does get back into the business of killing people in the new movie.....

That was awesome. I was suprised how the movie kinda comes along slow but the last 15 or so minutes of the movie is just non-stop action. One of my favorite parts of the movie is when you realize Rambo still has it....when he first has to become a killing machine again. I was like "he's really thinking about doing this isn't he? no way, can't be done - oh he's doing it, yep he's still Rambo".

Want a real spoiler? Rambo dies at the end of the movie. Apparently the USA got into the cloning business back in the late 1960's. To try to erase Rambo from all american records they sent the clone Rambo to go take out the real one. They get into a grueling fist fight and then a grenade pin is pulled during a grapple, the camera zooms out and all you see is a giant explosion go off in the middle of the forest. If you wait after the credits it shows Rambo in hell waging war on Satan with a bow and arrow made of fire.

don't throw away all your dvds yet....
Toshiba is going to make them mo' better

Toshiba cooking up upconverting “super-dvd” to best Blu-Ray

It isn’t news that Sony’s Blu-Ray has bested Toshiba’s HD-DVD video format a while ago, and it certainly isn’t news that Toshiba is reeling from the defeat. But I don’t think anyone could have predicted that Toshiba would pull its beaten and bloodied self together and make another affront to Blu-Ray; Toshiba plans to release a “super” DVD player, an upscaling format that promises to deliver Blu-Ray definition out of normal DVDs for quite a few bucks less.

Daily Yomiuri Online and the Associated Press report that that Toshiba’s new format is based on a new technology that incorporates a new “large integrated circuit” which can “instantly convert images produced in the current format into high-resolution images.” As Blu-Ray’s resolution is about 6 times that of standard DVDs, that new circuit must be something special, because Toshiba claims it will be able to compare to Blu-Ray’s quality.

Toshiba plans to release the new players by the end of the year at lower price points than Blu-Ray players, in hopes of hooking customers considering a switch to the HD format. As there is a vastly larger collection of DVDs than Blu-Rays at this point in time, and at cheaper prices than Blu-Ray discs, this technology could potentially sway some customers.

However, as anyone that’s actually owned both an upconverting player and a real high-definition player will know, upconversion doesn’t hold a candle to the real thing. As lower resolution formats like DVD have fewer pixels, to create the illusion of high definition, the upconverter simulates pixels that aren’t really there. Generally that results in blur or not-crisp images.

I’ve never been a big proponent of upconverting for that very reason. All that upconverters do is confuse customers who aren’t savvy about the technology and delay progress. If people are buying upconverters, companies like Toshiba are only holding back the advancement of true HD format. All this comes off looking like is a sore loser trying to injure the competition because Toshiba knows it can’t win anymore.

oh by the way I guess I shouldn't have put this in the thread since it fails to meet the topic of HD

don't throw away all your dvds yet....
Toshiba is going to make them mo' better

"You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear" The source of DVD's is 480i/p and no amount of upconversion will make them look and sound anywhere close to 1080p and HD audio of Blu-ray's. Let Toshiba bleed more money and lose again. I'm sure their shareholders will love that on top of their epic failure of HD DVD.

No, I did a few times. But back then I was using S-Video with no upconversion and the difference was noticeable. Especially with a nice DTS soundtrack added. It was still 480i but with no extras which allowed for less compressed video and better audio.

You could even mount the speakers to the walls if you really wanted to with these.

Mon Jun 2, 2008 2:16am EDT LOS ANGELES - Michael Bay feels vindicated.

Paramount Pictures is releasing his box office hit "Transformers" on Blu-ray Disc, nearly a year after the studio's decision to issue the film in the rival HD DVD format triggered a tirade from the director.

"I've been waiting for 'Transformers' to be released on Blu-ray for a long time, and it was worth the wait," Bay said. He called the September 2 release of the two-disc set "the complete high-definition package for fans."

"It looks stunning and really allows you to engage with this movie in new ways," Bay added. "Remember, I told everyone Blu-ray was best."

Nice!! but I wouldnt go with the CS3i with the monitors. Not the best match. Probably the CS1 would be a better timber match for them. It will still sound great but I am always trying to match my speakers.

I have the same setup with the onkyo 705 and the CS1 center. I put the Rears on the speaker stands I posted earlier and it looks sweet.

Got a new entertainment center delivered this morning. Center channel and 2 fronts fit perfectly up top. Sony 720, PS3 and 360 will go behind the door on the lower right side....

Are you planning on killing your AV equipment by putting it in that space with little airflow and behind a glass door?

Holland is right, Amazon is usually best, though occasionally you can get a good deal price matching someone's sale with another store. Like Wal-mart at BB or something like that.

If you want overall easy and mostly cheapest, you can't seem to beat Amazon. In fact, look at the Die Hard box set deal they have in the Gold Box today.

List of the Blu-Ray releases for this week.

Luckily one of my Paramount sprees last year took care of the vast majority of the good titles on that list. Of the stuff thats coming out there it's kind of a tossup between a bunch of titles.

Cloverfield
Patton (although with Fox prices this will likely wait)
Semi-Pro
There Will Be Blood
Weeds Season 3

I like a bunch of other titles on the list but they all have that black friday discount look to them. Hell even Patton seems like it could find itself in the middle of a "war movie discount week" at Amazon. Because theres alot of war movies coming out this week (or already out) and alot of them don't move immediately.

You would be surprised how fast a AV receiver and a PS3 will heat up in that small enclosed area. The PS3 itself doesn't run that hot, but combined with the AV receiver, it will get hot in there fast.

If I were you, I would at least keep the doors open when you run them. Really, heat is one of the worst things that can hurt electronics.

BLU-RAY IS ALIVE!!!

Blu-ray format expected to dominate, but when?

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Blu-ray stomped HD DVD to become the standard format for high-definition movie discs, but years may pass before it can claim victory over the good old DVD.

Noemi Velazquez, a 44-year-old warehouse worker, can explain why.

She took one look at the $399 price tag of a Blu-ray player at a Best Buy store one night this month in Glendale, California, and kept going.

"I have to admit, Blu-ray is great," she said.

"(But) I'm going to wait until they go to half-price."

Analysts, movie studios and the Blu-ray Disc Association, a manufacturing group, all say Blu-ray discs will eventually dominate video sales. The question is when.

Consumers are balking at the $300-plus cost of most Blu-ray players especially because only limited movie titles are available in the format.

"People aren't going to pay three times as much for a platform that's only half-baked," said Steve Wilson, a consumer electronics analyst with ABI Research.

Many also are waiting to see how cable, satellite and online video services play out.

But, above all, consumers seem satisfied with standard-definition DVDs and players -- even consumers who upgrade to high-definition TVs that can tap into Blu-ray's sharper picture and clearer sound.

Velazquez said that because she was still paying off a $1,000 high-definition TV she bought in October she was happy for now to keep watching pay-TV movies and standard-definition DVDs on it.

Sony Corp.-backed Blu-ray was crowned the next-generation video technology in February after Toshiba Corp., creator of the competing HD DVD format, abruptly said it would drop the fight.

The move came after Warner Bros. decided to join most other studios by going solely with Blu-ray and video rental chains followed suit.

Manufacturers are planning a souped-up lineup of titles and special features on Blu-ray discs to boost sales this summer and during the coming Christmas season in the hope that Blu-ray can turn around the sagging home video market. And retailers are creating new displays to explain Blu-ray's benefits.

U.S. consumer spending on home video rentals and purchases in all formats, including DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray and VHS, fell 3 percent to $24.1 billion last year. The figure was expected to drop another 2 percent this year to $23.6 billion, despite a sixfold increase in Blu-ray disc spending to $1.3 billion, according to Adams Media Research.

The Blu-ray increase is not enough to offset an expected 6 percent drop in overall spending on DVDs.

Adams says it could take two more years for Blu-ray sales to put the home video market back on a growth path.

"The group that bought $2,000, 40-inch TVs are the ones that will lead the charge," said Tom Adams, founder of the research firm. "Everyone else will come along when the price comes down."

To jump-start the changeover, studios are beginning to release movies in Blu-ray with enhanced bonus features like picture-in-picture director commentary. The new bells and whistles are meant to entice consumers to plop down as much as $10 extra for a Blu-ray disc compared to a standard DVD.

Blu-ray machine prices are starting to drop. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. began stocking a $298 Magnavox model in mid-May, said spokeswoman Melissa O'Brien. That's cheaper than most alternatives but a hefty price hike from a typical $50 DVD player.

The format also faces sales challenges that DVDs did not when they took over from VHS in the late 1990s. It doesn't save any space compared to DVD, and there's no need to replace a DVD collection even once you buy a Blu-ray player because it will play your old discs.

There also is a proliferation of direct-to-home offerings appearing on cable, satellite and the Internet that threaten to stop Blu-ray growth in its tracks. Blu-ray backers say, however, consumers prefer physical copies of movies over virtual ones, especially when some online rental services impose a time limit.

And Blu-ray's adoption curve is similar to -- maybe even faster than -- that of DVDs, backers say. Blu-ray players, now available for three years, cost $100 less than DVD players did at a comparable point in their life cycle, said Dorinda Marticorena, a senior vice president at Warner Home Video, a unit of Time Warner Inc.

"DVD was exactly the same thing. Players were expensive and there were not many titles. Lo and behold, the awareness went up and demand went up," said Andy Parsons, chair of the association's U.S. promotion committee. "It'll happen in good time."

Blu-ray still has a long, uphill climb. Last year, more than 101 million U.S. households could play DVDs, compared to 3.7 million that could play Blu-ray discs, including those with PlayStation 3 consoles, according to Adams.

But that's double the 1.6 million DVD devices that were in U.S. households in 1998, the comparable second year they were available. By the end of 2008, 14.4 million U.S. households are expected to be Blu-ray compatible, compared to the 9.4 U.S. million households that could play DVDs in year three.

Manufacturers and studios are preparing new offerings to take advantage of a feature known as BD Live, which allows access to enhanced Blu-ray bonus features over the Internet. It's available now on Sony's PlayStation 3 game consoles.

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. added a BD Live clip-sharing function on its horror flick "Saw IV" and plans to have "Rambo" director Sylvester Stallone conduct an interactive exchange with viewers about his director's cut.

"It makes these discs almost alive," said Lions Gate president Steve Beeks.

The Walt Disney Co. is set to rerelease the 1959 animated feature "Sleeping Beauty" in October in Blu-ray with chat, trivia and video-messaging functions, just as its rerelease of "Snow White" on DVD in 2000 introduced a then-revolutionary animated menu.

"'Snow White' made the mass market wake up to the potential of DVD and helped demystify the technology," said Bob Chapek, president of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Worldwide. "'Sleeping Beauty' on Blu-ray a decade later represents much the same thing."

The High-Def 2.0’s High-Def Disc Awards were the first ever of it's kind. Considering what we know now of what HD audio is capable of on Blu-ray it winning that award doesn't make much sense. That's why we're getting it now with 2 uncompressed soundtracks. Transformers HD DVD winning that award was much more a testament of it's mix than actual audio quality.
