Harmony remotes are top notch... I highly recommend them to everyone that has a small pile of remotes.
My wife gave me the Harmony 890 for Christmas and I will fight anyone who tries to take it from me.

I got this one as a gift last holiday season on HD DVD but have yet to pop it in. I've seen the movie, which was very good, I imagine it looks just as good on either format. Maybe I'll pop it in this weekend now.
Not to be a jerk, but it DOES look a tad better on Blu Ray.
My jaw literally dropped when I saw both the Blu Ray and the HD DVD ones playing side-by side on the same tv at Best Buy about a month ago...
Both formats may be the same on many movies, but Last Samurai on Blu Ray smacks it's bro on HD DVD in the face!!
:p :D

Hows that possible?? I dont think thats possible..
One TV must have been dialed in better then the other. Not bashing Blu Ray but I am sure there are ZERO differences if the same movie is out for both.
My bet would be BestBuy had a SD-DVD in the HD player if there was THAT much of a difference.

yeah, you also can't trust Best Buy's setups worth a damn because at some stores they have Batman Begins playing in a TV that's part of a Blu-Ray demonstration package.

Considering the Last Samurai a Warner release and Warner masters the HD DVD first and then transfers it to BD, there's no difference between the two disks.
Both are also a VC-1 encoding.
If there was a difference to be seen, it was probably due to the player or tv.
And if you compare reviews, both get a very high rating for PQ that are identical.

Very easily. I was in the dark bought the harmony 880 and it took me maybe 20 minutes to program it.
All you do is download the software, punch in your equipment u own and what you want to turn on at once then download it to the remote and bam you are done. You might need to make a few adjustments.
I have a button called "Watch DVD", I hit one button, MY HDTV turns on and turns to the corrent input, my Toshiba HD DVD player turns on as well as my Onkyo reciever to the corrct DVD input.
I was laughing last night after i I did it and how sleek it works.
Pretty much everything can turn on with one punch of the button.
Must have

I went back to my Gamestop to pick up The Perfect Storm HD DVD for 14.99 but they were already sold out of it. All they had left at the 1 down here that carries them so far was Clerks 2, not one I really want to own.

On another note, I finally got around to watching Goodfellas on HD-DVD.
I would say this is the first one I genuinely noticed how flat and non-HD it looked during some scenes. Don't get me wrong, it's still the best looking version of this movie I've seen (and probably the best we will for a long time)...and there were a couple scenes where you could really see how nasty Ray Liotta's face looks, but nothing impressive.
However, it's still worth it to be able to watch a clean, non-blurred version on my 62" TV, which ultimately is why I'm buying a lot of these HD-DVDs and blu-rays.

I see you got the 880. I am looking at getting a Harmony as well.
As of right now I have the 360 with the add on, a reciever, TV, and VCR. So logically the 360 Harmony would best suit me...but I don't like the look of it, plus I will either be getting the standalone HD DVD player or wait it out to see if Samsung really is releasing a dual format player this July.
I have had the Harmony 550 before and loved it but it broke and never got around to getting a new one right away.
I do like the 880...but the buttons look like they may be stiff and whatnot. Any thoughts since you have it?
Also, you may not know this, but do you know how much retail stores pay for these? I have a sis that works at Best Buy so I am hoping for a nice discount.

So for my April 15th "1st Anniversary of HD DVD" I plan on picking up 3 movies from Amazon.com.
Children of Men and Happy Feet are the first two, but I'm struggling a bit with a third (more movies = less shipping per movie).
I'm leaning towards Ant Bully, Pitch Black, or Meet the Parents (for the wife). Any other suggestions?
These are the movies I currently own or have on pre-order
V for Vendetta
Sleepy Hollow
12 Monkeys
Serenity
King Kong
Christmas Vacation
Lady in the Water
World Trade Center
Miami Vice
Superman Returns
Batman Begins

It took me literally 20 minutes to set up everything. GF loves it and how easy it really is to use. I am blown away by this remote..
Circuit City sells them for $250. So not sure how much your sister could get it for.
Amazon sells them brand new shipped for around $156. If your sister can get it for less then that I would jump all over it.

Man thats where the 880 shines. Hit Watch DVD and it goes
TV on to correct input
Reciever on to correct input
HD DVD player on and you are all set.
If i can turn on the Microwave and make me dinner I would be all set :)

No matter what you program it always takes you to the correct input. I couldnt remember half the time and would have to cycle through. Not anymore.

Need help with logitech remote, maybe you guys can help me out.
Bought the 520 recently and here's my scenario:
Everything is turned off, I choose "play xbox 360" and the tv, receiver, xbox 360 turns on.
I want to watch tv because I just got chainsawed in Gears of War and have to wait for the nex tround.
I click on "watch tv" and the 360 turns off, I don't want it to be turned off.
On the tv activity setup, I changed "leave unused items" on. That's the solution until....
I'm browsing the channels and see a close basketball game, so I decide I'd rather watch the game then play 360. So I want to turn it off in my "watch tv" activity so I won't miss any second of the basketball game. There's no button for it because the 360 device is not included in "watch tv" activity. I include 360 to "watch tv" and customized a button for power off for the 360. I thought this would fix my problem..wrong.
If everything is turned off and I choose "watch tv", the 360 also turns on, I don't want it to do that.
So my question is: Is there an option where I can include a device in my activity but not turn it on when I choose the activity. I want it to be in its current state (whether my xbox is on because I'm waiting for the next game, or it's totally off)
Any advice is apreciated.

Can you customize Two "Watch TV" one withthe xbox 360 turned on and one when it turns off or whatever you want?
Also the 880 has a button called Devices. I can hit that and it takes me to all my devices and I can hit the xbox 360 and click on/off the power that way while still under "Watch TV" activites.

Yes. Your tv will accept 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p signals over various connections and then convert it to your tv's native resolution (most likely 720p or 1080i).

Hybrid players are WAY to expensive to save both sides unless they come down to around $299.00.
I would buy a Toshiba HD-A2 for $299.99 dlvd (5 free movies from toshiba) and get the PS3 for $599.00 that way even if Blu Ray dies you still have a video game player.
Or if HD DVD dies you have a nice upscale player and you didnt invest a boat load of money also both will be around for a long time regardless of who wins.
Hybrid players I think will be missing something. Like the LG is missing HDi for HD DVD. I would stay away from them. But thats just me

The thing I never quite understood...and I believe it's because I own both formats and my primary players also double as video game systems....but in that sense, if you own both, who cares if one dies? The movies you own will still play...and your "dead" player is still a hell of a video game system.
Call it hedging your bet or whatever, but I only invested $160 in my HD DVD add-on, and while I do have 28 HD DVD titles or so....they'll all still play just fine if the format dies...it's not like they'lll suddenly self-destruct. Likewise with Blu-Ray, although I ultimately see the studio support for them being too much in the long run for HD DVD to overcome.

Just finished reading the whole article...not really telling anyone who's up to date on this anything they don't already know. Although it does a good job of being a very neutral article.
Honestly, one of the major things killing HD DVD in the high-def market is HD DVD itself....The combos and their more-expensive price-tag are so off-putting for those of us who own both formats. It's come to be now that I'll probably only buy HD-DVD's that are exclusive. Like today I'm thinking about buying Black Rain...which is the same price for both, and likely will pick it up on Blu-Ray.
It also doesn't help that more than half of the HD-DVD players in the marketplace are 360 add-ons...so basically they're tied to a system that has a frustratingly high failure rate as is. (knock on wood :))

Yeah pretty much.
If you get the Toshiba Xa2 it does the best upscaling compared to anything under 3k.. Its one amazing HD DVD player. Amazon has it for around $530.00 plus you get 5 free HD DVD's from toshiba. Check AVSfourm and read about how well it upscales regular DVD's
If thats out of our price range the Todshiba HD A2 is a solid second choice. And i think BB or CC is running a good deal. IF you buy the HD A2 for $399.00 you get 4 free HD DVD's plus the 5 from Toshiba for a total of 9 free HD DVD's
Or wait for the Toshiba A20 if you want 1080P which can be had for $385.

It's also airing on Discovery right now - probably the best nature footage ever shot, some absolutely jaw dropping footage....... well worth the 70 bucks.

Aside from this weekend, which was an organized effort by the HD DVD camp to spike the sales....I'd have to say Blu-Ray consistently outsells HD DVD these days.
But as long as Universal and to a lesser extent, Weinstein, support HD DVD exclusively, the war will still go on. I don't see a winner before at least the middle of 2008.
Blu Ray has more studio support, and the quality is about equal. Some will say HD DVD's True HD Audio is superior, but I can't tell the difference worth a damn anyway.

your logic is sound...but here's the major flaw, if you're always waiting around for this to happen or that to happen, you end up missing out on a lot of great stuff. In this case, you may be waiting a couple years or more for the "war" to end. The only reason I even own either player is because of the video game systems, and I got the 360 add-on for $160 bucks, which is peanuts to get into the next-gen game.
Does it suck to have to get 2 formats right now, definitely. But they both are producing some amazing visuals and audio, and I find it very difficult (I tried this weekend) to go back to SD-DVD.
Just my two cents there.

I get pretty good results off my Sony upconverter. While its not as good as the HD players it is sure the hell alot cheaper and I only need one player. I learned along time ago that if you just be patient you can get the same things as everyone else for alot cheaper. I use to buy the latest and greatest of everything but when I stopped I was able to buy a very nice house and start my own business which will someday be very profitable and then I can buy the latest and greatest again, lol.:D

Makes sense for those on a budget and are worried about the war. Me, I dont care I have two nice HD TV's and want to get the most out of them. HD DVD and Blu Ray give me just that.
Regardless of who wins its not like your player will stop working. I say buy one and enjoy it. If it were me just starting into it i would get the add-on for the 360 or the A-2 which can be had for around $300 dlvd plus 5 free movies. Or for around $350 from CC and 9 free movies
Or get the PS3 and enjoy Blu Ray.
Either way you cant go wrong IMO.

If your concerned about picking the "winning" side then I don't know if theres necessarily a right answer for that. As things are going right now neither side is really winning out, they are looking more and more like nitch products on a daily basis. But with that being said if I had to advise you to pick up 1 product, not the cheapest, not the best deal, not the prettiest...just as you said the product that I see winning out on the long term? Go out and buy a PS3. There is absolutely no downside to this decision. Could you buy the 360's HD DVD add-on? Yes you could but that has even the tiniest bit of downside to it as you spent $150-$200 to specifically watch movies...with the PS3 you're buying a videogame system thats going to have great stuff like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, God of War, etc on it that just so happens to play movies, and play them extremely well. Right now if you go around the net and do your research (not blog.com/bluraysucks or blog.com/hddvdawful) you'll see that most places are saying this is Blu-Rays war to lose. HD DVD has an absolutely amazing product, great deals, and delivered on everything they promised. But sometimes thats not enough, sometimes millions upon millions of PS3's being scattered acrossed peoples homes all around the globe is too much to overcome.
The marketing blitz alone will be ridiculous. By the end of 2007 you'll be seeing commercials and adds featuring Spiderman standing next to Wolverine standing next to Jack Bauer, standing next to Jack Sparrow, standing next to Leonidas, standing next to Batman & Superman, standing next to Harry Potter, standing next to Neo, standing next to James Bond, with the cast of Sin City sprinkled between them and Forrest Gump, Creasy, Shrek and "The Bride" from Kill Bill on the end. The studio support is just a ton to overcome. Alot of the characters I listed up above are neutral but it's the record breaking characters like the guys from Spiderman, Pirates, etc that make all the difference.

I don't know, Spiderman would shoot webbing in the T-Rex's eye then Wolverine would go and claw at him. Then Creasy would make sure the T-Rex died even if it cost him his own life.

A couple short HD-DVD reviews of movies I just saw.
Miami Vice - PQ is below average, movie was horrible. The only good thing about it was the Nonpoint cover of In the Air Tonight.
Dune - Wow, had never seen this movie, I frickin' loved it. Picture Quality was very good for a movie that old, the only thing I would've like was less grain over the desert scenes, but nothing you can do about that. Great audio on this one, too.

Well, the problem with Miami Vice is that a large chunk of the movie has intentional grain... the landscape scenes do tend to pop in HD however.

I popped in The Game HD DVD last night and watched the first half. I have to say some of the negative reviews are founded. The movie is extremely soft. And, while I firmly believe this is a movie that absolutely needs that "distance"....it was definitely softer than I expected.
But, as with all high def movies, it's clear on my big screen tv (meaning without the DVD blur effect), and it's still a great flick.
But, not sure it's worth the upgrade over DVD if you don't have a big screen set.

It started out with HD DVD killing Blu Ray in both software and hardware sales.
Right now Blu Ray has taken the lead thanks to the "PS3 Effect"
I believe however that the "PS3 Effect" will be nowhere near as big as the "Walmart Effect"
If Walmart truely starts heavily promoting HD DVD and puts Blu Rays to the side (like they do with UMDs) then I bet we will see some more studios going nuetral which would mean HD DVD could once again "take the lead"
PrimeBane
04-24-2007, 11:09 AM
Well, WM is supposed to carry the new Sony BD player this year ($600ish?). Methinks they'll promote both products equally and let the buyers make the choice.
Preditor74
04-24-2007, 11:47 AM
Yes but...when you see a $600 Blu Ray player next to a $300 (possibly lower) HD DVD player...I wonder what they'll pick?
And don't say "Blu Ray because they have more studio support" because the average person has NO IDEA what studios are supporting which format and if you walk into a Best Buy or Walmart you see roughly the same amount of movies on each format.
PrimeBane

Oh believe me, I'm in the HD DVD camp at the moment... I'm all about price when it comes to this stuff. :)

I'm going to probably pick up Dreamgirls today so I definately wanna get my hands on that demo disk. With that being said to anyone questionable on what to pick up today I'd give Deja Vu a go...I bought it last week and watched it and I really liked the movie. But it was a solid movie....certainly not what the previews make it out to be, but depending on how open minded you are you'll either really like the movie or hate it.

I'm not going to call it a man crush...classify it as what you will. But he only makes great movies. And don't even throw "Out of Time" out there. It was a decent movie. It was a mere blip on the radar of awesome movies of his. Glory, Ricochet, The Hurricane, Man on Fire, Training Day, Remember the Titans, Deja Vu....all of them are some of my favorite movies of all time. 3 of them are in my top 10 all time.

I know it's only a demo but theres something ridiculously awesome about seeing Spiderman on the cover of a blu-ray disk...just makes you realize that you are closer and closer to seeing those 2 awesome movies in HD.

Amazon usually has the cheapest prices, but if you don't have amazon prime you pay for shipping. If waiting a few business days isn't your thing, I'd just as soon go to Best Buy and pay a couple bucks more.

Sometimes the individual titles are priced a bit differently for BB vs Amazon, but I don't think BB can be the Amazon price for the Matrix, so I ordered it. Prime 2 day shipping is free, so I'll happily wait. Plus, I got the extra 10% off thanks to Amazon's high def DVD promo:)

Is there a website where I can look to see if a gamertag I want is available? I've grown tired of my current gamertag name, and want to change it.
I know it costs 800 points for the change, but I'd rather not spend hours typing in potential gamertag names for myself, especially with the "keyboard."

i'm still undecided on the Matrix Trilogy...although I'm in the minority as being someone who really enjoyed the first AND the third installments. I might wait for a PQ review since the first Matrix has some age to it already.

Getting close to the huge release day May 22. I think I actually might take it easy and only pick up Dead Man's Chest on Blu-Ray. Maybe the first Pirates movie also, we'll see.
Can't wait until Sneakers comes out on HD DVD in June, too.

Man Im with you.
I love the first Matrix and actually really like the third one. The second one was VERY dissapointing at first...but after watching it again knowing what to expect I enjoyed it a little more (much like Death Proof in GRINDHOUSE)...but I do prefer the third over the second!
The end of May can't get here soon enough...although I am enjoying Planet Earth right now (what a spetacular series)!!!

Rumor says you BD folks will have Spiderman 1 and 2 by October... 3 in November.
This was a UK article so dates could differ in North America.
And the rumor du jour... A German website is claiming Universal is going neutral right away.

Sorry to hear about the 360....thats happened to me so many times I've lost track. Ok I lied I haven't lost track (4 times). But anyways it's just a perfect example as to why you need an extended warranty so badly...my first 2 broken 360's didn't have a warranty so I was screwed had to wait for the coffin, etc. I suppose patience is needed on this one. Or you could always get around to buying that Wii you always wanted and that could hold you over during the downtimes when your 360 is broken.
As for the whole Spiderman thing I can't wait for this fall....when I originally bought into Blu-Ray it was mainly for X-Men, Spiderman, and LOTR. Well I've gotten 1 X-Men title but no Spiderman or LOTR yet so seeing Spiderman will be huge for me, even that stupid best buy demo disk got me all excited for it's release.
I really don't see Universal going neutral any time soon though....I mean everyone knows they can see theres money to be had on the other side of the fence but at least from my perspective them going neutral is almost like leaving HD DVD for dead. I'm not saying HD DVD couldn't survive after that, they certainly could, but I mean damn thats quite the mountain to climb. To be honest though I'm pretty sure it's exactly what it's labeled as "a rumor".....I really can't see them jumping ship this early.

Is Planet Earth a worthwhile purchase? Do you have it on BR or HD-DVD?
Is it something you'd watch more than once?
Even if I got it for $60-something, I'd hope it would warrant repeat viewings.

With word of Samsung making a dual player and MAYBE the cheap chinese players I DO NOT see Universal going nuetral anytime at all. Sales are pretty close with Blu Ray and Tosihba HD DVD players are selling VERY well.
I dont see either really taking off anytime soon which could be bad for us.
But you never know.

They've invested entirely too much money in this to just call it a day. HD DVD will be around for a WHILE longer. But I also feel as if a clear winner is within a year and a half of being announced. And not one of those corny "Sony has declared 1 day into the war that they've won"....I mean the case to make for customers to buy into the other format will just be downright impossible.

Now is a good as time as any to go nuetral, all they are doing is leaving money on the table. Since Universal doesn't make hardware, it doesn't make since for them to not support the other format, unless Toshiba & Microsoft are paying them.

You could argue it doesnt make sense for Disney not to support the other format. IF Walmart does come through with the cheap HD DVD players I think It might force one's hand.
Toshiba already said they will sell 3 million HD DVD players before year end. There was something on avsforums that pointed out the there are already 2 million HD DVD players/add on's/drives sold. I can try and dig it up.
I am enjoying both and if one dies so be it.
It will be years before one dies. Heck look at LD it was around for 20 years.

Exactly... if it were truly about money, every studio but Sony/Columbia would be neutral at this point.
No one will ever admit it, but exclusive studios on both sides are most likely getting "funded".

Who is argueing?
If you are not making the hardware, you are losing out on money by not supporting both formats.
I'm not going to buy another player just for a few discs unless it is under $100. I want Serenity & V for Vendetta, but not enough to pay $200 for a Chinese piece of junk plus $60 for the movies.

I agree I wouldnt pay $200 for a chinese player either but consumers just might.
Heck you can get the HD DVD Toshiba A-2 for around $300 shipped. Great machine for that price. Prices are falling hard.
