DVD Beaver review of A Bridge Too Far. Is it just me, or is there very little difference between the SD and HD screen captures?

It SHOULD sound a lot better but the PQ should be the same yes ;)
Bull... a DD+ track can (and does in Transformers case) identical to the original master.
You've been taking in too much FUD over at BD.com Brooksie... in the butt! ;)

A 1.5 mbps soundtrack can sound identical to the master? LOL Are you serious? How would you know what the master sounds like for Transformers? You can't. But you will if you listen to the 5.1 PCM or TrueHD soundtrack on the Blu-ray. :D
PrimeBane

I can toss the same question right back at you... how do you know the DD 5.1 isn't identical?
The pros all stated when TF came out on HD DVD that the track was IDENTICAL. I'm afraid I'll take their word over yours. :)

Who are the pro's? I'll take comments from Paramount themselves over your "pros".... :D
I had the opportunity to attend a special 'Transformers' media event with Paramount late last week, and the question was asked almost immediately -- why no Dolby TrueHD or uncompressed PCM? The studio's answer was that due to space limitations on the disc, the decision was made to limit the audio to Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 Surround only (here at 1.5mbps). Unfortunately, this confirms the long-held theory that the 30Gb capacity of an HD-30 dual-layer HD DVD disc has forced studios to choose between offering a robust supplements package (as they've done here) and the very best in audio quality.
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/transformers.html
You read that? LIMIT...LIMIT THE AUDIO due to space limitations. So the bottom line is this, Paramount had/has a Transformers soundtrack with MUCH higher bandwidth than the DD+ 1.5mbps that was put on the HD DVD due to space limitations. Now that they have more space on the Blu-ray, they are putting that soundtrack on there to the tune of 5.1 PCM and Dolby TrueHD. If they thought the DD+ soundtrack was identical to the master then why didn't they put it on the Blu-ray? :D

That's limit the codec, not the quality... way to twist their words.
And I quote: "At least one professional Hollywood sound mixer has described Dolby Digital Plus at 1.5 Mb/s as audibly transparent to the studio master. "
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/1064
Audibly Transparent... I bet in a blind sound test, 9 out of 10 wouldn't notice any difference between a properly encoded DD+ versus it's lossless counterpart.

I wasn't twisting any words. Peter Bracke quoted Paramount who said they couldn't put a lossless audio track on there because space didn't allow for it. That's why they are using 2 of them now. There's nothing to debate here. It may not sound that much better than the DD+ but that will always be subjective because like I said before, the HD DVD had a great mix.

Try the Internet for a dust cover. As for sizes, projection screens can get well over 100"...hell, well over 150". I saw some 72" DLP TVs at ABT electronics, if you have one near you, you can check it out.
In Best Buys or Circuit City stores, the largest you'll probably come across is 62".

Indeed, you are misleading people that I am trying to sell a movie on an inferior format. This is the ultimate High Definition experience. Heck the box even says it is "Beyond High Definition". SBrooks, I'm looking at you.
Plus, it features an UNCOMPRESSED 5.1 sound track. Perfect for showing off those high-end home theater systems.

Monsters HD was an awesome channel (I used to love watching the old 1950's monster movies in HD) but I don't know I haven't really surfed for that channel in a while so I'm not sure if it's gone or not. I'll check tonight when I go to watch tv. I was so psyched that they added local channels in HD (eliminating the need for my ota antenna - which got in NOTHING) that I haven't even really paid attention to alot of the other HD channels I used to really like.
As for Blu-ray looking better? Yes it definately does. Monsters HD had some pretty high quality stuff but Blu-ray beats out all of the HD channels.

Monsters HD was part of the Voom network which Dishnetwork dropped because of contract violations or something of that nature.
Ahh ok,that explains it,all of a sudden those channels were just gone.Even though they showed alot of the same movies over and over,i still liked to watch it.Wish they would bring it back somehow.

Another nice receiver deal for you Yanks
Onkyo 606 receiver (4 HDMI in) for $404.99 at Circuit City
http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/productDetail.do?oid=208513&catOid=&cmSearchKeyword=onkyo+606
You need to apply an additional 10% off coupon ZXAKLWWA68.
if you want to make it still cheaper sign-up at fatwallet and get an additional 3% FatWallet CashBack.
Pick-up and regular shipping are free within the USA.
Specs:
7.1 channels: The Onkyo TX-SR606 has 7.1 channels and HDMI upconversion.
HDMI repeater v1.3: The TX-SR606 is a powerful control center for all high definition media, including Blu-ray Disc and HD broadcasts. Up to four components can be connected via HDMI to receive and switch compatible sources for a pure digital connection to an HDTV. All multichannel audio can be digitally transported via HDMI for processing by the TX-SR606. And HDMI v1.3 supports CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), greater bandwidth to deal with higher resolutions, 36-bit Deep Color, and high frame rates.
HDMI upconversion: 1080p video is processed as it is, but all other signals can be upscaled to 1080i via HDMI. This upscaling takes the video resolution to pure HD quality. To further improve performance on HD displays, the TX-SR606 features a deinterlacing chip with Faroudja DCDi Edge technology, which effectively eliminates video artifacts.
Dolby True HD and DTS-HD: Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD give you a true high definition 7.1 surround sound experience, with several channels of audio each going to a respective speaker. Dolby Digital EX and DTS EX Discrete create an extra, dedicated rear channel from a 5.1 source…giving you a more full surround atmosphere. Dolby Pro Logic IIx produces a 7.1 channel effect from a source with only two channels, while DTS Neo6 does the same for 6.1. You have an abundance of sound options.
Connectivity: The TX-SR606 features four S-Video and four HDMI inputs, as well as one HDMI and two S-Video outputs.
Wide Range Amplifier Technology: Onkyo's WRAT technology minimizes negative feedback, eliminates ground-potential fluctuations and offers higher instantaneous current capability. The bottom line: you get powerful, more accurate sound reproduction.
Audyssey 2EQ: This sophisticated speaker calibration system automatically adjusts level, equalization, and delay settings for each of your speakers, assuring you of the most accurate home theater sound available.
AM/FM tuner: Enjoy all your favorite radio stations with the built-in AM/FM digital tuner, that also works with Sirius radio (subscription required). Switch easily between them with 40 programmable presets.

Rumor Mill: MGM Readying Bond Titles For Blu-ray Release?
Thu Jun 05, 2008 at 12:55 PM ET
The French release of six Bond flicks on Blu-ray this November has hopes high that the same films may find their way to US store shelves before Christmas.
The French website filmsactu.com is reporting today that MGM (via its parent distributor Fox) will release a half-dozen Bond titles on Blu-ray in France on November 5, 2008. The six flicks are reported to be 'Dr No,' 'Thunderball,' 'Live or Let Die,' 'From Russia With Love,' 'Die Another Day' and 'For Your Eyes Only.'
As for the fourteen other unreleased Bond titles ('Casino Royale' is the only 007 flick currently available on Blu-ray), rumor has it that they're planned for release concurrent with the BD release of 'Quantum of Solace,' sometime in the first half of 2009.
Though the French release of these titles doesn't necessarily mean they will also hit shelves stateside, generally Fox/MGM's release of such tentpole titles in France happens concurrently with (or is preceded by) a US release, heightening expectations that a US announcement could be on its way.
We should stress that with no official word from Fox or MGM stateside, all discussion of a US release of the Bond catalogue is purely speculative at this point. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted when and if any official information comes in. Stay tuned...

Noob question regarding PS3. Probably been asked before but didn't see it.
I have my audio connected through optical.
If I put the audio's output to bitstream(instead of PCM) and I choose a TrueHD track (or lossless), do I still get 5.1 or does it go into two channels?
Thanks.
PrimeBane
06-05-2008, 04:33 PM
I believe it will downgrade to DD 5.1 or DTS... the PS3 cannot bitstream any lossless audio codec. It will only do 2 channel PCM over optical due to bandwidth.
thaderules
06-05-2008, 04:43 PM
Got it. Which one do you prefer?
I've tested both out and I prefer the real 5.1, even though it's not lossless. To me, PCM over optical, choosing the lossless track, is not as wide.

I know nothing about how your HT is setup, but it sounds like a crossover issue. I know on the subs in my car, I can set the crossover on my amp to determine what frequency gets sent to the subs. I can control the peak range of frequency that is sent to them, so only low bass comes through them.
Sounds like your crossover, if there is one, is set too low.

It's true to because if you think about it, if HD DVD had the rights to Wild Hogs then it would also have the rights to Disney and if HD DVD had Disney then I think Warner would have chosen to go HD DVD also.

Watched Kung Fu Panda. It was ok. Was hoping for a little better. But I think what took away from this was the people in front on us.
The lady had a 1 year old that kept walking around and she kept getting up. Thats why I HATE the moives and just watch them at the house.

Just depends on the kid. We've been taking my son (5) since he was 3. He's never had any problems :)
And I loved Kung Fu Panda. Jack Black was great, as were the other Ninjas.

Got around to watching Commando and the last version I owned was on VHS. PQ wasn't amazing but really good for an older movie. Also what a just plain awesome movie. The last 20 minutes where he pretty much destroyed an army gives John Rambo a run for his money.

I will grab it on BR once it comes out and watch it again. I would probably loved the movie but really could not enjoy it.
I dont mind kids laughing out loud or stuff like that but when people are AlWAYS getting up in front of you cashing their kids all over the theater is where I have the problem.
There were 8 of us that I paid for because of the little one's b-day. After food and movies is wasnt cheap and I felt bad for the kids and other adults with us that couldnt really enjoy it.

I hear ya. When we took our son to his first move (TMNT) I told my wife, if he doesn't sit still and be semi-quiet we'll leave and he won't go to a movie till he's older. But, we got lucky. He loves movies. He's been to alot of movies and never has any major problems. Iron Man was a little loud for him, but he was good through it.

It was a cover of the Van Halen music video "Right Now" talking about things going on in technology and Best Buy. Funny how some people can not let HD DVD die.
My thoughts are why talk about something like HD DVD when people at BB can talk about more better things like educating their employee's so they do not sound so stupid given out info :D.
I can see the meeting now:
Manager - OK team we are here to talk to you about HD DVD and make fun of it.
Sbrooks - He He I think I just pissed my pants laughing (thinking of PB and his HD DVD collection)
Manager - I would talk about more serious stuff and try to educate you people but lets just forget about that right now because its a lost cause and watch this HD DVD video.
Sbrooks - Wow!!! Man that was close. The only thing I could have talked about was HD DVD..

If you didn't buy them at the time, a handful of titles are $14.99
Juno
Enchanted
I Am Legend
Predator
Legend of the Waterhorse
Surf's Up
Underworld
Walk Hard
300
Big Fish
Standard North American shipping is $7.99, so it's probably not worth your while unless you order at least 3 titles.
And if you order 10 BDs, you get 10% off.

The problem with their little chart on getting to $2,500 is that people don't buy all that crap in one year, and they definitely don't buy all that stuff every year.
I guess if you're buying a TV or something and get BB to price match, then it's cool. I've found there are too many different options for getting to videogames and movies than being forced to stick to Best Buy just to build up my reward zone points, which are far too small for the amount they make you spend anyway.
Spencers gifts of all places gives you $5 for every $50 you spend. Best Buy is basically $5 for every $250. I save more than that just buying 1 movie from Amazon instead of BB.
