3 Reasons to not buy Blu-ray (at least for now)
http://www.electronichouse.com/article/3_reasons_to_avoid_bluray/
1. Not-so-great HD
2. Cost
3. Ever Changing Technology
I'm not the biggest BD fan ever, but what a load of crap...
Not-so-great HD - the author says that older films were not filmed with HD in mind. Apparently what he forgets is film has a higher resolution that 1080p. Many old films look stunning in HD. Anything that does look like crap in HD is usually either the director's "artistic impression" or poor mastering on the studio's part.
Cost - yeah, BD players can be expensive, but so were DVD players in their first 2 years. When you consider you can get a BD player in the PS3 for $399 AND get a $100 gift card to get yourself some movies, that price barrier is coming down and fast. If you don't like the price now, wait until Black Friday or Christmas for the deals. If you're even a hobby HT enthusiast, you already have a 5.1 system of some sort.... in all honesty, that will do anyone until they can upgrade their receiver. Yes, Lossless > lossy, but lossy can still sound pretty fantastic (at least better than the 2 crappy speakers in the front of the tv). And when you consider you can get a Sony receiver between $200 and $300, that's not a pile of cash to enjoy lossless (remember if you buy one of these, the BD player has to do the audio decoding).
Ever Changing Technology - While the BD profile thing does bug me, it is easy to avoid *cough*PS3*cough*. Technology will always be changing. The next best thing in HT will probably be here in the next 7-8 years (assuming it follows a similar pattern to DVD).
As for the author's 1080p comments, you don't have to get a 1080p set to benefit from HD. Unless you're buying a set 50" or larger, 1080p can be a huge waste of money. And the single greatest drawnback of 1080p... your SD tv channels are going to look THAT much worse. Even your SD channels (assuming they are broadcast in 720p) are going to look off on a 1080p set (the degree it will look off depends on the set).

Sony 520 and 720 can be found for less than $300 in the US... they don't decode themselves, but if the PS3 is your BD player you can get away with one of these. (yes, the PS3 does the audio decoding for TruHD and DTS-HD MA and passes it to the receiver as PCM)

Not yet.
Warner Home Video has revealed that they plan to issue 10 Blu-ray/coffee book combination releases this year. The two announced so far, will be the March 25th release of 'Bonnie and Clyde (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=647)' and the June 3rd release of 'Dirty Harry' (not the previously revealed box set (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=733)). Other releases getting similar treatment will be 'Woodstock (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=764)', releases from the 'Harry Potter' franchise, 'Bladerunner' (already released on Blu-ray as a collection (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=545)), 'Gone with the Wind (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=758)' and 'North by Northwest (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=762)'.

I really don't understand how this all works... did Paramount buy DW or just lease? The article says DW and Paramount can part ways, but at the bottom it says Paramount purchased. Can Spielberg force a sale?

Watched Enchanted last night on BD.
It was great! A very very clever take on the classic Disney fairy tale experience. I totally got all caught up in the lovey dovey fairy tale stuff. Plus, Amy Adams is gorgeous.
Also, there's a short 5 minute animated story on the disc an extra about the squirrel you meet in the movie. It is without a doubt one of the worst things i've never seen in my whole life...

So isn't Paramount just the distribution arm for Dreamworks then? Maybe I'm not reading it right. Really, with the money he has and makes every movie, it doesn't make sense for him to have anything else other than a distribution deal at best.
If he and Lucas were such good buddies, they should just form a distribution company and do that part too. Of course, since they haven't, I'm assuming that is the part that costs the most and has the most risk.

Good Lord.......70 minutes?!?!?!
During an interview with director Louis Leterrier, he mentioned that the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'The Incredible Hulk', which is set to be released this Friday, will contain 70 minutes of cut footage. Apparently, during the editing process, some much-loved scenes got cut (including one which is in the trailer, but won't be in the final cut of the film), and the Blu-ray will showcase them all.
"There's some great stuff and there's some really horrible stuff, but you'll see it all," commented Leterrier. Regardless, Blu-ray fans will get to see a side of the film that (apparently) those who buy the DVD won't.
Those close to the situation have speculated a falling-out between Leterrier and the film's star Edward Norton over the cutting of certain scenes. Here's hoping that the Blu-ray also has some nice intros from them both on why they loved the scene and why it was eventually cut.

Well the game is $60 and the new rumble controller is $50 so that's $110. With my neighbor mentioning they were looking for a PS3 I figured after owning it for over a year it was only worth $400.
Plus I figured I could use the extra HD space as I basically had maxed out my 60GB if you can believe it with movies, downloaded trailers, and photos.
Plus...that box art looked mighty snazzy! :)

I really don't see it as a movie worthy of a sequel. It had a ton of potential but aside from when he warps that entire bus (it's not a spoiler it's in the trailer) the "jumping" fight scenes actually kinda sucked. Also the whole backstory was hardly explained, sure I get it paladins = good, jumpers = bad. But why are they such huge enemies, are there any famous jumpers? Was Hitler a jumper and thats why they need to make sure none of them come to power.

The 60GB PS3 hard drive is real easy to fill up, it's something I've found out the hard way. Between gaming content, gaming saves, games themselves, music, trailers, etc it goes quick. I'm down to 10GB's after last nights install of Metal Gear Solid. My main problem is I put every single CD I buy onto my PS3. So that way when I'm browsing the internet it's like I'm on my computer can listen to music, etc. Once you get to 30+ cd's on the PS3 the space starts to get eaten up pretty quick.

Heheheh...well I tried to rip some of my dvds to the PS3 but it was soooo time consuming. No, most of my movies are actually short clips from youtube or other sites (probably like 20-30%). It's actually a fun novel way of entertaining guests who are over. A majority of my HD space has been eaten up by game installations (20%) and music (40%) like Chugga mentions below.

Yeah, I was afraid I would not be able to install MGS4 on my 60GB without spending time to delete stuff (ain't I a lazy bum?). That's been actually one of the more surprising aspects of owning a PS3...the amount of HD eaten up by games and their installation.

I think I'll be good for most of the systems lifespan with a 60GB I'll just have to delete alot of the needless junk I put on it. But if they ever release a transfer device and a 120GB HD I'll be all over it. Weird thing is, is I have the 120GB Xbox360 but I still have 101GBs left on that thing. It used to be the opposite. Tons of room on the PS3 absolutely none of the 360. But now that I watch all of my movies on the PS3 thats where I put all my music, download all of my trailers, demo's etc.

Yeah...the disappointing thing about the 360 is the lack of thumbnails for most of my movies...aside from photos. It's minor I know...but it's something that does add that extra incentive when you're trying to figure out where to dump all that media.
The one thing that does annoy me about the PS3 is the lack of folder organizing by name. It's either by date or filenames but you can't actually create a new folder called "My G@y Journey music collection".

Much like how I don't buy 360 games because I don't like the size of the case they come in another one of my pet peeves is having things not made by the company that made the system. I refuse to buy a "Mad Catz" controller or a "Pelican" earpiece, or whatever. I like my system stuff to be uniform. So if Sony releases a PS3 hard drive thats 120GB then I'd buy it. But otherwise nah.
Honestly I'm not really hurting for space to begin with. Like I said I've got like 30-40 CD's on the system thats not needed and I refuse to delete demo's even after I already own the game (don't ask me why, lazy I guess). I just worry later on down the line when game data starts killing me. I have a feeling Final Fantasy 13 is going to have a killer game install that will kill my HD space. But thats far enough in the future that I'm not worrying right now.

Nah the PS3 doesn't rip CD's. Just whenever I buy a CD I usually put it on my computer (just in case the disk gets scratched to all hell) and now I've been doing the same with my PS3 just because I find myself browsing the net alot more with the PS3 then with my actual computer. It's cooler downstairs on these hot days and the size of my moniter increases 51 inches, so why the hell not.

They don't need to... you could buy or borrow a portable USB drive and copy all your saved games, music, videos, etc over to the portable drive. Does the new HDD say "Sony Playstation 3" on the side and come in the black backed plastic packaging with the red letters and silver stripes? Because if not I don't want it. You could always get an external hard drive that's network ready and put your cd's on that instead of the PS3 drive. That way you could still access your music without having to dirty up your system with an unofficial Sony product

Oh I know they will be on Ebay. I've been looking at it all week. That is why I had the idea to buy one, take the GC and sell it. If nothing else, I'd make $100 off it.
Last I looked, they are only selling in the $520 - $560 range. That nets next to nothing ($3.50) in profit after fees not including my time. Plus, like I said, you can still find them in stores pretty easily. It would have to close at $580 or higher with the $30 shipping charge on top of that for it to be worth my effort.
I know people are going to try that gift card scam and return the PS3 to Wal-Mart. They always do. When TRU has their annual B2G1 on video games, people are always scamming ways to return the 2 and keep the free one. TRU got smart and started looking up receipts in the system to prevent that.

Ah ok...well I have DSL so wireless won't be an option for me unfortunately, although you seem to imply that the connection isn't that reliable? I think a 24-25 ft. cat5 cable should be enough length for me.
Just because you have DSL doesn't mean you can't use the wireless. If you have a wireless router, it would work with DSL as well. Sounds like you don't have that though.
PB is right though. Most people report the wireless internet on the PS3 is pretty slow.
Also, the Friday the 13th useage of Wild Hogs is great. Who knew that WH would be the only thing that would FINALLY kill Jason??? If that doesn't impress someone who would want that movie, nothing would.

If you want to go wireless, you can usually find a good wireless router for around $50 on sale.
And you can totally have wireless with DSL. I do. :D

Funny story, I was working at Best Buy last night and a guy called in and said he just bought a PS3, had it hooked up via HDMI and when he watched a Blu-ray movie he was confused because there were still black bars on his TV. He thought Blu-ray was 1080p and all the movies should fit his screen. I *sighed* inside and had to explain to him about aspect ratios (told him to look on the back of his Blu-ray case for National Treasure 2 and pointed out 2.40:1) and how you're seeing what the Director intended for you to see. I swear to God I hate movie studios for putting out full screen DVD's. They have dumbed down consumers so bad by doing that.

Might have to get those.
Speaking of "getting movies"...........I looked over my BR collection last night.....and I realized that out of the 70 or so movies I have.....I'd actually "repeat watch" maybe 10 of them. Gonna have a massive purge. From here on out....I'm only buying what I know I will watch multiple times. Otherwise...I'll just rent them. At $20+ a movie....I cannot continue to keep buying those marginal titles that I'll only watch once.
Keep your eyes posted for a huge sale.

If your modem is right by your computer, you don't even need to get the wireless card. All wireless routers normally have 4 ports for wired connections on the back. You could keep your computer wired and use wireless for the PS3.
Once you had the router set up, you'd search for wireless networks on your PS3. It's pretty easy to do. :)

Wolf Creek HD DVD: Actually pretty tense, imo. PQ was above average to good. I thought I'd watch this once (got it for $8) and sell it, but I'm going to keep it.

Well...looks like I had no luck tonight with plugging my PS3 80GB to the net.
I tried using my 25ft CAT-5 cable from my modem (needed to stretch it from a bedroom to the living room). I know the cable works as I've used it from my modem to computer, but after a little research I found out that the 6ft cable that comes with the new PS3 80GB is a CAT-6 (says so on the cable). My 25 footer is a Belkin FastCAT 5e cable so I guess it's not fast enough?
Plan to run out tomorrow and look for a CAT-6 and give it another try...if that don't work, I might take PrimeBane's advice and go for the wireless router (although the reliability of the connection and speed turns me off).

I'm going to try to pick up a couple of these like I did with Spiderman. Spiderman did the same thing a while back but not many people were actually buying Blu-ray at that time so since they weren't moving I got a handful of them. They work great as backup cases. You ever go to Gamestop/FYE/whatever and see a used Blu-ray movie but hate the fact that the case is in awful condition? Slip out the cover art from the free Spiderman disk (or now Hanc-ck), slip in the new used disk cover art and it's just like brand new.

It was a very limited release (at least as far as I'm concerned). There wasn't a theater within an hours drive that was showing it. So with that being said I don't know how many personal reviews you'll get of it.
It will be a blind buy for me but I'm a huge fan of Jack Black and more importantly I've been dying to see it ever since they showed the trailer of it on HDnet.
Rottentomatoes says 67% so I doubt I'll have any regrets getting it.

It's not really a twist, it's just a "reveal" that wraps up the purpose of the whole thing she was going through....and in that regard, I found it unrewarding as a viewer.

I'm sure you've thought of this stuff already, but I'd go through a checklist of general troubleshooting.
1.) Are all the speaker wires connected properly?
2.) Is the 720 set to the output you desire?
3.) Do you have a backup receiver to test? Maybe the 720 is a dud.
4.) Is your PS3 sound set for HDMI in the system settings? Did it somehow default to something else without your knowledge?
Good luck...if the receiver turns out to be the problem and it's still under warranty, you can try to call Sony to have them walk you through the issue. My experience is that their customer service is very helpful, believe it or not.

Awesome news!
Warner to Focus on Blu-ray over Theatrical Releases
President and CEO of Time Warner Inc, Jeff Bewkes, commented that his studio would release fewer theatrical films and begin to focus more on building wider consumer adoption of Blu-ray. While the movie studio has seen success, the profits being generated by its home media arm have trumped all box office take.
Warner Brothers is already a leader in Blu-ray releases, has released more classic films than any other studio. Their increased support of Blu-ray should hopefully not only increase the number of quality Blu-ray titles on the market, but also decrease the number of theatrical bombs (and their eventual Blu-ray releases) from tainting movie-goers minds.

Golden Compass. Wow. I don't know what happened in that movie. I think after LotR was so big and awesome, they just chose a bunch of epic books that shouldn't have been made into movies. Eragon for example. This story was jsut, all over the place and was so hard to follow.

Well watched Before The Devil Knows your Dead on BR just now.
Wow this Could have been a very good movie but they killed it. Sad.
If you close your left eye and tilt your head to the right so you only see the right half of the screen in the first 2 minutes of the movie...you'll change your mind and call it the best movie of 2008. ;)

Bucket list will be my next pick up if I can find a decent price. How was it? Worth picking up or renting?
I have no interest in jumper but might rent it.

Follow-up from last week, I wanted to give major props to PrimeBane for this bit of helpful advice.
I stopped by BB this past Saturday looking at some Cat-6 cables for hooking up the PS3 to the network. The cost of a 25ft cable is about $30 in the store, so I thought I'd swing by the router section...noticed Netgear's wireless g router for $40 and decided to give it a try since the price difference was relatively small.
Long story short...went back home...plugged up my modem to the router and within a few minutes...was able to pull of the signal on my PS3...went to use their browser and WALLAH! The internets pulled up and I was surfing the web within seconds! Loading web pages took relatively seconds to load, although downloading movie clips from Gametrailers.com for example did take a while to get, compared to my pc cable connection.
Now for the icing on the cake, I just have to create an account and give MGS4 a try in multiplayer for the true test of speed. :)
Major props to PrimeBane...you deserve a beer and a lapdance!

I have never had luck with routers I have bought at stores. They work for a few months then I just have all sort of problems. So I am going to call my Cable Company and get theirs. I think its like $5.00/month plus any problems they fix it.
Thanks for the reminder. calling now :)

How come PrimeBane gets all the love??? :(
The PS3 is wireless. You could hook it up that way.

Anybody want to buy a 360? I'm selling my brother's Xbox 360 for him.
Premium Edition w/ 20gb hard drive. The Premium retails for $350, but this is not one of the newest ones with HDMI.
I'll sell it to you for $250 + shipping.
The good news is that his account has around 9-10 months of Xbox Live Gold left in it. You can use his username and claim it as your own, or you can change it to something else you want. That's like $38 free bucks right there. Although if you change the username, I think Xbox charges you like $5 for that or something.
He's never had a problem with the system, and he bought it in on Christmas Eve 2006. It's been hardly used. It looks like it's brand freakin new.
You get what the premium system came with, which is the 20gb hard drive, the wired headset, the wireless controller, and the HD component cable.
Let me know!

The real question is what will you pick up next week. I despise the fact that I went and wasted my time on seeing 10,000 BC (cue paragraph long Holeman-like rant) but I won't lie, as an HD title it has potential to be demo-quality. As awful as the movie is theres a couple of shots off the top of my head that would look impressive in HD. But we'll see how the reviewers like it.

My brother just got a PS3 for Blu-ray. He's really new to all this HD stuff, but he wants to learn more. I wrote him up a Blu-ray Buying Guide to help him along, especially because he's VERY price sensitive. I decided to post it here for anyone else reading who wants to know how to get started with Blu-ray. It may not be perfect, and I'm certainly not an expert in this stuff. Some of it I wrote geared towards how I know he thinks, so it may not apply to you. Just take it for what it is-- a general guide for Blu-ray. It's not the end all be all. :D
Brother-
Now that you are going to be buying Blu-ray Discs (BDs), I wanted to share with you advice, tips, and knowledge I’ve collected over the years.
Do not pay retail prices for BDs. Best Buy et al. typically charge $25-$40 per disc. That’s just crazy. 99% of the time, you will find the cheapest movies on Amazon.com. Simply search for your movie on Amazon, and you will see their low prices. If you spend $25 or more on a purchase, you get free super-saver shipping. This is media mail, and typically takes a week for your movie to arrive. I am a paying member of Amazon’s VIP club, Amazon Prime. That means I get free 2 day shipping on any purchase of any amount on anything sold by Amazon.com. If you ever want to use my Prime account for something (BD or not), just let me know.
I commonly spend between $15-$18 per BD movie. I have often spent as low as $10 per movie. I often spend as much as $20 per movie. Rarely, I’ve spent between $22-$25 depending on how bad I had to have it. I have an internal guideline. I won’t spend more than $20 on a new release, and I won’t spend more than $15 on an old movie (“catalog” release) coming to BD. This is obviously a guideline, and fluctuates when I have to have something now. But, it helps guide me when I say, “Do I REALLLLY have to have it?”
When movies are announced, the studio announces the Manufacturers Suggest Retail Price (MSRP). This is what Best Buy, and other big box retail stores will probably sell the movie for (or very close to it). Amazon offers at LEAST a 30-33% discount off MSRP on every BD. It’s their policy.
However, the bad news is, for new movies, Disney, Paramount, and Fox are NOTORIOUS for pricing their new movies at $39.99 MSRP. That means a new movie from one of these studios will be $28 on Amazon. OUCH!
The number one tip I can offer you is WAIT IF YOU CAN. I know it sucks not being able to have the latest movies when they first come out. I’m dying for There Will Be Blood (which came out this week), but I’m not paying $28 for it. I can wait a few weeks and buy it from individual sellers on the Amazon marketplace for around $20. I buy at LEAST half my movies from the Amazon marketplace, and almost all new movies that way. Obviously, the longer you wait, the less it will cost as more people put their personal copies to sell. So how bad you want it plays a role on what you’ll pay. I’ll probably wait 2 weeks for it and check on the price. I may have to pay $23-$24 for it. It’s worth $28 though. LOL. I don’t know how I’m going to refuse Iron Man for $28 (which it is currently preorder priced at). It’s one of the greatest movies I’ve ever seen, and I don’t know how I’m going to go through waiting to own it. I saw it twice in the theaters!
To find the Amazon Marketplace, find a movie on Amazon and click “used & new” on the right. These movies are not sold by Amazon.com, but are sold by regular people and warehouses. They are not Prime eligible, and you will be hit with a $3 shipping cost on each. Do not be afraid buying movies from here. If you have a choice, I’d obviously buy from someone who has higher feedback than a newbie. But sometimes you have to take a small risk. In here, I buy 80% of my movies “New” which are still sealed and would come just like I bought it from Amazon, and maybe 20% of my movies as “Like New” which means they probably just watched it once and didn’t like it. I do not buy any condition grades below that. You can save more money usually if you buy “Like New” over “New” EVERY time, but I usually like to be safer than sorry when I can. That peace of mind is worth a few bucks to me. The worst experience I have ever had on the Amazon Marketplace is that the seller didn’t use a bubble envelope (minor gripe), or there was a retail sticker on the case (minor gripe). I have never had a major issue.
In addition to the Amazon marketplace, I buy movies from Half.com. This is eBay’s version of the Amazon marketplace. I rarely shop there as the Amazon Marketplace has similar pricing. But every now and then I’ll find a gem on there for a great price.
There are a LOT of sales on Amazon. That is usually when I buy directly from them and not the marketplace. I will send you links and tips as I get them. I have a regular system for trading this information. I will add you into our loop. Just know these sales usually don’t last very long. So, if I send you a deal about a sale, and you want something… Act quickly!
Here is an example of the most recent 10 BDs I bought.
Rambo- $22.95 New from Amazon.com (Bought it on release day. Great price.)

Here is the direct link to Amazon.com’s current best selling BDs. This is the best way to spot unannounced sales (the cheap movies will RISE to the top), and the best way to spot new movies just put out for preorder (as those are very popular). http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/dvd/332285011/ref=pd_ts_zbw_d_332285011_more?&pf_rd_p=315869901&pf_rd_s=right-5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=193640011&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=06YFFV8S3K718N8T79X1
I also wanted to let you know. I don’t know if you’re aware, but Amazon.com has a 30-day price matching policy with itself. If you bought something, and they lower the price within 30 days, just let them know and they’ll refund the difference.
Just click “help” at the top and then “contact us” at the right, and fill out the email form. Just include your order number, the item you bought, and be like “hey I bought this within 30 days ago. I paid X, now it costs Y. Please refund the difference.” And they will every time.
The only trick is that their prices fluctuate daily if not more. So I probably spend 5 minutes every day re-searching for stuff I’ve purchased within the last 30 days. I’ll let them know everything. Even if it costs just $1 less. It all adds up. I probably get back at least $50 a year.
Now… How do you know if it’s worth buying on BD (aka How is the “transfer?”)? This isn’t so much a question for new movies, but more so for older movies. There are two notions at work here.
1.) People OFTEN think, “Old movies won’t look good on Blu-ray because they weren’t shot digitally or with HD cameras like today’s new movies.” People always forget that film has a MUCH higher resolution than 1080p high definition. 35mm film has resolution of between 6,000-8,000 lines of data per still frame. 1080p has resolution of 1080 lines of data per still frame. So you’re not trying to “upgrade” old film to high definition. It already was “upgraded” when it was shot. You’re actually trying to downgrade it. Weird, eh? The question here is how well did the studio take care of the print, and how much time did they spend cleaning it up for BD release. If the print is ruined, there’s no hope to it. If it’s just dirty, and it wasn’t cleaned up, the BD might look OK, but would look better with a Special Edition (SE). Hint hint, from the studio that wants more money from you. If the print is great, and the transfer is great, old movies could look BETTER than new movies on BD!
2.)People often ask, “Is it worth it buying a BD from a movie I already own on DVD?” This is called “double dipping.” Double dipping is when you re-buy a movie from DVD to BD… also when you rebuy a movie (because a new edition came out) from DVD to DVD and BD to BD. Only one movie has been double dipped on BD so far. That movie was Troy. It has a regular and director’s cut out. It’s such crap, because BDs are so much bigger than DVDs, that the disc can hold both versions of the movie. I HATE DOUBLE DIPPING! Studios will try to entice you to double dip as long as there are studios in existence. Fox is the WORST for double dipping. Example: Die Hard 4 Unrated is only out on DVD, not BD. They want you to buy it on BD now, and then buy it on BD again dipping for the SE in the future. I have refused to buy Die Hard 4 on BD. I am waiting for the inevitable dip. Die Hard 4 was AWESOME, and I REALLY want to own it. But I’m not going to get screwed.
The answer?
http://www.highdefdigest.com will become your best friend (next to me). They are the leading BD review site. They will rate the movie itself, the video quality of the BD, the audio quality of the BD, high def extras, supplements, and overall of the disc. By checking out the video quality reading the review, you’ll get a GREAT guide in deciding if it’s worth dipping, or even buying in general. It’s obviously a judgment call, and some movies you will want no matter want. But it’s a GREAT start in helping you to decide if a dip or buy is worth it.
Two aside notes here:
1.) Unless you’re very curious, ignore the star rating for the movie itself. That’s obviously just if the reviewer liked the movie itself or not. That has nothing to do with video or audio quality. Use imdb ratings or rottentomatoes.com ratings for that instead.
2.) Audio quality really doesn’t apply to you at all. You’ll be just future proofing yourself when you get good movies with high ratings in that. Your receiver isn’t going to do the high definition audio that all BD movies come with. All your audio will always be downgraded to very stripped down simple audio out version. Next, we’ll need to work on getting you a high definition receiver and a nice set of speakers.
Here are some example reviews of old movies on BD from almost 20 years apart, starting 40 years ago:
Short Circuit from 1986- Old movie, bad transfer to BD: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/418/shortcircuit.html They tell you here that the source material is bad. Basically this is as good as it will EVER get. I doubt it would look much better (if better at all) in BD than DVD. Not worth an upgrade. I actually did buy it on BD though because I didn’t already own it on DVD. So if I’m going to buy it, I might as well go BD. If I already had it on DVD, I wouldn’t have dipped it.
2001: A Space Odyssey from 1968- OOOLLLDDD movie, PHENOMENAL transfer to BD: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/2001aspaceodyssey.html. They gave it FIVE out of FIVE stars for Video Quality! WOW! The movie is 40 years old! Most NEW movies don’t get that high of a rating! This is on my to-own list for SURE. Even if I already owned it on DVD, this would be a dip for me. They must have taken IMPECCABLE care of the source material and cleaned up the transfer well.
Here is an example of old movies from the same time, but have vastly different transfers:
Dirty Harry from 1971: 4 stars video quality. Nice. - http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1394/dirtyharry.html
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid from 1968: 2 stars video quality. OUCH. I really wanted to buy this. I’ll wait for it to become very cheap or just get the DVD.- http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/611/butchcassidyandthesundancekid.html
Here are some examples of recent movies so you see that new movies can vary from awesome to not so awesome:
Ratatouille from 2007: 5 stars video quality, 5 stars audio quality- http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/ratatouille.html
Rambo from 2008: 4.5 stars video quality, 5 stars audio quality- http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1372/rambo.html
Cloverfield from 2008: 4 stars video quality, 5 stars audio quality- http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/1476/cloverfield.html
Semi-Pro from 2008: 3.5 stars video quality, 3.5 stars audio quality- http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/391/semipro.html
Anyways, I hope this all was helpful and insightful. I’m excited to welcome you to the world of BDs. Once you go Blu, you never go back! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me!

I don't see a whole lot for next week...maybe Spiderwick? Heard decent things about it.

I actually like the simplicity....and you can see the entire fig....without all the damn stickers on the front of it.

But then again...I haven't bought a SP in over 2 years....and don't plan on it anytime soon.....so my opinion is a moot one.
