Hey guys, what's the best way to clean an LCD screen? I bought a "laptop & LCD cleaning kit" at Staples. You get three wipes, three polishing cloths and a microfiber finishing cloth. The wipes have left streaks on the screen that the polishing and microfiber cloths couldn't remove. They were alcohol and ammonia free wipes. Any tips on the best way to clean the screen?

I use this on my monitor, works really well IMO.

Is that alright to do? Tap water is cool? I probably haven't been dusting it the best way. A soft cotton t-shirt gently on the screen.

Tap water (providing you don't have super hard water) should be fine... just dampen the microfiber cloth (you don't want too much water) and gently clean the problem areas.

Hey chugga....how are you enjoying that blind buy of "Be Kind, Rewind" :p So glad I rented this one. Same with "There will Be Blood". Incredible movie. Great acting. Great AQ/PQ. But the pace is similar to watching the loogies I spit onto my shower wall make their way to the drain. Not something I'm going to view multiple times. And the guy who played the Reverend stole the movie for me....I thought his performance topped even that of Daniel Day Lewis'.

Should last a very long time - I use maybe two squirts on a 19" computer monitor so you'd maybe use 4 or 5 on your TV I'd imagine. I like it because it's a gel and it doesn't streak at all.

I was actually a big fan of Be Kind Rewind, I like just about anything Jack Black is in (other then Nacho Libre, that movie was awful) so Be Kind Rewind was great, them remaking the movies was absolutely hilarious. They remake all of 5 seconds of Boyz In the Hood and I laughed my @$$ off. Their remake of Driving Miss Daisy was a riot too. The movie itself wasn't as funny but had it's moments (when he gets magnitized - "it's like a maze of mirrors") but every single remake they made had me laughing non-stop.

2 for $30 is as good as a bogo for me since those damn bogo's always had me buying the $30 one and then getting the $25 one for free (yeah I know I wasn't smart enough to do multiple transactions). I just don't like the titles offered. I remember when they used to offer up the Pirates movies back when they were still fresh on shelves, now-a-days deals are still offering the same movies that I picked up on in deals almost a year ago. I wouldn't expect a really good sale until Paramount and Universal get themselves in motion and really start cranking out the titles (hopefully this fall). Look at it from a retail perspective. (I'm using fake numbers) but lets say Best Buy had 5 Blu-ray racks and 5 HD DVD racks. HD DVD is dead and all of it's movies got sent away...now all of a sudden Blu-ray has 10 racks. If you go to your local Best Buy you'll likely see that Blu-ray section has more then enough space right now as there just aren't really enough movies out to take up all the racks.
Once the racks start getting filled to the brim with new Paramount, Universal, Dreamworks, etc etc etc titles ontop of the already slated Disney, Fox, Warner, etc titles you will start to see those racks get VERY tight and instead of immediately expanding I would almost guarentee they run some huge back catalogue sales to move a bunch of their extras to clear up room for the holiday blockbusters.

PQ and AQ aside I'd say buy Troy simply because it's a badass movie. Brad Pitt kills it as Achilles and they cast Helen perfectly (she was beautiful). From the first scene where Achilles owns the guy in 5 seconds it never goes downhill.
To this day even after all these releases I still believe Troy and Kingdom of Heaven are two of the best Blu-ray disks out.

I don't think so... if you really want one, grab an LG while they're still available. freezerfuel has one if you have any questions.
Bill Hunt actually brought up a really good point last week. Instead of concentrating on this super upconversion crap, Toshiba should work on an affordable dual player for the market. I know I'd buy one.
I suppose there could be a small bit of hope for one from the Chinese market. Assuming they're still going to use their version of HD DVD, I suppose there could be a BD/Chinese HD DVD player. Considering the Chinese HD DVD is the same as the defunct HD DVD other than the codecs used, a simple firmware update could turn such a beast into a nice dual player for North America... I'm not holding my breath for one however.

The reason? Damn random audio dropouts. I had it hooked up to my old TV with component cables and it worked flawlessly. Then when I bought a new TV I decided to switch things around and use the 200 with the projector connected with HDMI. I'm almost 100% sure HDMI is the reason for the problems. Although LG supposedly released a firmware update that should fix the audio dropouts. Other than that problem (which really isn't a problem if LG fixed it) it's an awesome player. Loads up pretty fast (faster than the A20), beautiful picture, pretty sure it does all the new HD audio codecs now, and it just looks cool.
But if you're in the market for a fridge don't buy an LG. Bought one and a month later it stopped working. :p
I really should get that new firmware for it.

I don't think so... if you really want one, grab an LG while they're still available. freezerfuel has one if you have any questions.

Makes no sense for Toshiba to make a Dual Player. They hate Blu Ray and want nothing to do with it. Thats why the created the SUC crap.
Plus Toshiba owns patents on DVD so why bother with Blu Ray? Instead they are going to make DVD the best they can. Plus how many Dual Players do you think they would honestly sell? Not many thats for sure.
Alot of people have sold off their HD DVD collection or already bought up an A35 or XA2 to use.
HD DVD is dead and for anyone to make a dual player makes zero sense right now.
For the attentive in attendance, you likely noticed that none of Toshiba's newly announced laptops (yes, even the absurdly powerful Qosmio rigs) have built-in Blu-ray drives. Like, there's not even an option. When questioned about the obvious oversight (ahem), Tosh's Europe CEO Alan Thompson noted that "Blu-ray was just one of the many ways that you can get HD content and is not required for accessing HD content." Furthermore, it seems as if the outfit is continuing on in its pursuit to develop the best DVD upconverting technology in the whole wide world, as it explained to the press in London that its forthcoming technology would "fill in the gaps" and "add resolution." Company representatives even remarked that "Blu-ray was only a storage medium," and reiterated that BD "wasn't the only way to view high-def content." It's one thing to bow out gracefully, pick up the pieces and get on with life. It's another thing to douse yourself in ignorance and pretend that Blu-ray (let alone HD DVD) never happened.

Yeah, I don't see any new dual format players coming from Tosh or anyone else for that matter.
I think were going to see Tosh push the SUC really hard and I just don't get what Sony/BDA is doing since HD DVD died - they have basically sat back and think people are just going to flock to blu. There should have been some new advertising during the tax rebate / stimulus season - and I didn't see anything. There was the WM sale, but they should be doing a lot more - heck a guy on the sports board the other day didn't even realize HD DVD was dead, as he asked which one he should go with.

If they had added a third war movie I might actually have bit. When will they learn.

A couple of additions to the HT this weekend.
First, I FINALLY hung up my 106" screen. I was having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to mount it to the wall due to the strange nature of the placment. I ended up using Hercules Hooks and they've done a fine job. :)
Secondly, I added a Lutron IR light control.

Mine actaully came with a Philips univeral remote (another remote for the drawer). As usual, Harmony made it pretty easy to set it up. I did have to customize the buttons, but it works really well, easpeically for $42 :)

Are we allowed to ask for tech help in this thread? :p :D
If one is planning on "upgrading" to an HDMI connection for an HDTV set, but doesn't have a surround sound capable receiver, is it better to just stay with component, or is it ok to at least get your video from the HDMI capable? My gaming TV (A Westinghouse 32w6) has the 1 HDMI port, but I am running a stereo-only receiver that is 10+ years old still. I am hoping that I will still be able to get my stereo speakers for the receiver to work with an HDMI connection.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Ah, thank you for the reply. I just didn't want to get all the cables and then get burned. I finally tracked down the MGS4 bundle this morning (thanks to the wife), so I can now say I own all Playstation consoles again.....until the PS4. :D
And I did recall the threads in the past about Monoprice, I'm already placing the order for one as we speak. However, what to do in the meantime, while I wait for shipping? I am contemplating trying to buy a cheap in-store solution, and then returning it.

Moving on up, the STR-DG720 (7 x 100-watts) includes a three-in / one-out HDMI repeater, 1080p24 / x.v.Color support, the ability to accept multi-channel HD audio as well as eight-channel Linear PCM and BRAVIA Sync (http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/BRAVIASync/) to boot. The flagship STR-DG820 steps things up even further with four HDMI 1.3 inputs and one output, Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, Cinema Studio EX and Neural-THX Surround processing and a 7 x 100-watt amplifier. Check the read link for more details on each, but you'll be forced to take a stab of your own at pricing.

Differences Within 1080p
1080p can also be displayed (depending on the video processing used) as a 1080p/60 (most common), 1080p/30, or in 1080p/24 formats.
1080p/60 is essentially the same frame repeated twice every 30th of a second. (enhanced video frame rate).
1080p/30 is the same frame displayed once every 30th of a second. (standard live or recorded video frame rate).
1080p/24 is the same frame displayed every 24th of a second (standard motion picture film frame rate)

Doesn't the standard (1080p/60) cause the jitter that you see on the screen at times? That is why they sell TVs that accept the 1080/24 signal now, correct?
I still think those make the movie look weird.

I think what you're thinking of is the 120hz refresh rate that new LCD's have. They also call it Auto Motion on Samsungs. That has nothing to do with 1080p24/60. There are varying degrees of 120hz you can adjust too. Low, Medium, High, Very High.....something like that. I watched some of Saving Private Ryan with it on Very High and it was, like you said, weird. Sometimes I like it and sometimes I don't.

Not really but I've been interested too. Do both SACD and DVD-Audio have full 5.1 audio? I heard the way they mixed Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon is amazing in 5.1 but I don't remember if that was SACD or DVD-audio. LMK what you find out, I'm going to go Google it right now:)

Yes! You will be amazed at the sound that comes out. Sit back and enjoy.
Note that the PCM output signal from an SACD is still something processed (converted) from the original DSD stream.
The biggest reason it didnt catch on was because of cost and studio's not getting behind it. Also HDMI wasnt around either to take full advantage of it.
Once you play a SACD you WILL NOT be able to listen to a CD again.
But to really take advantage of SACD's you would want a player to output dsd directly through HDMI instead of converting it to PCM
Remember some SACD's are NOT multichannel some are 2.0 and some I think are 5.0

Well I love that HD DVD died, huge fan of that. But for followers of HD DVD and people who are still collecting the disks etc it's a shame for them as this year had a VERY powerful slate of movies for them. Looking over what Disney, Fox, Sony etc have in terms of blockbuster releases for 08 there really aren't any. But Universal, Paramount, and Warner are stacked with them. If you were a fan of HD DVD 2008 would have been an amazing year for you had things not turned out like they did.

300's back.
'300,' 'JFK' Lead Warner Blu-ray Fall Catalog Brigade
Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 03:00 PM ET
Warner has given a sneak peek of its upcoming fall line-up of next-gen catalog releases, unveiling plans to bring 'JFK,' 'Casablanca' and a redux of '300' to Blu-ray this year.
During a presentation at the Entertainment Merchants Association Conference held yesterday in Las Vegas, Warner execs revealed plans to bring newly-remastered and feature-laden Collector's Editions of Oliver Stone's 'JFK' and the Oscar-winning classic 'Casablanca' (previously released on HD DVD) to standard DVD and Blu-ray this Fall.
Also due this year is a new Limited Collector's Edition of the blockbuster '300,' which should boast the numerous exclusive features found on the HD DVD edition of the film that were dropped from the previous Blu-ray version. (A double dip of the top-selling next-gen title has long been rumored, but had yet to be confirmed by the studio.)
Finally, Warner/HBO also reiterated their announcement earlier this year that the award-winning epic miniseries 'Band of Brothers' would be making its much-anticipated high-def bow this year.
No street dates, or any further tech specs, were issued by the studio, but needless to say, watch this space for the latest news on all future Warner announcements.

On an unrelated note my Blu-ray collection actually went down by 2 as of yesterday. Natural Born Killers was $29.99 everywhere I went and I didn't want to spend that much on it just so I could say I have my 3rd book that I'll never read. And then Dirty Harry just kept sticking up higher then all the rest of the movies and it annoyed the hell out of me. I don't mind that Close Encounters sticks up because that is a beast of a boxed set. But Dirty Harry doesn't get that same type of respect from me.

I don't know **** about hockey or baseball, who plays where, who plays who, etc. So the difference between NHL2K7 and NHL2K9 for me is nothing at all. Updated rosters? Who cares I don't know the current rosters anyways.
NBA 2K7 would be a decent pickup then. That was a really good and fun game. TW07 is probably fine too. TW08 has a serious bug in it anyway, which I don't know if it is in 07. The Show is a great buy too, though Show 08 is well worth 60 if you like baseball at all. NHL 2K7 stunk in my opinion. I didn't like the game play and the graphics are very PS2 like.

On an unrelated note my Blu-ray collection actually went down by 2 as of yesterday. I was back and forth for a while but decided I absolutely despised those book-movies that Warner released so I took back Bonnie & Clyde and Dirty Harry. Seriously those cases are awful, I know I've said otherwise in the past but after staring at them for a while they just really annoyed me. They were books I'd never reading anyways. So more Best Buy store credit for today with nothing good to buy.
I went back and forth also, but decided to keep them. I like all 3 movies and want to own them. At some point I'll post new photos of my redone room (yeah I redid it again), but I have these displayed face-out between other movies that are just showing the spine.
Worst comes to worst you can always pick up blank blu cases for a buck and find a custom cover online to print out.

I already have NBA2K8, so I'm good with basketball/football titles. It's the odd sports that I don't follow that I'd consider getting, but honestly I don't feel like going into Sears only to hear this sale doesn't exsist.

My thought process was all 3 of the movies aren't movies I needed RIGHT NOW. They are movies that I'd like in my collection but I don't forsee myself watching them 10 times in the next 2 months so why bother keeping them. I'm just going to wait for a re-release, it's bound to happen when they get shipped out again but this time without the limited edition book look and just with a regular case.
Also I should add another thing I was thinking about was what happened when they re-released Blade Runner, Harry Potter, etc in the new packaging? Which one do I opt for? So I figured, might as well stay with the uniform look.

Great TV series. I watched them all on DVD. Tons of enjoyment. Be nice to have a BD set, but with the MSRP of the DVD set at like $300, the BD set would be like $500, which is probably why they didn't announce anything. I'm guessing they aren't making one because of the cost.

Natural Born Killers is like that Dirty Harry book-style case? Damn, I've been looking for that title but there's no point in looking anymore since I want all my cases to look the same. Guess I'll be playing the waiting game.

I did but when I looked at the release schedule I was like screw it.
Target has NB killers on sale for $19.99 this week.

Actually, I completely hear what you all are saying about the cases being different. I hate different cases, too. To add to that OCD method of shopping, I was thinking about getting rid of B&C when that was the only book one i owned, but now that I own 3 it's easier to accept them being different, because they're different together.
Damn that sounds so ******ed, but it's true.

it's old games they don't have in stock anymore. it's just internal pricing. you aren't going to find it sitting on the shelf. in the very slim chance you're lucky, well you have a deal.
Now if someone tries to return one without a receipt, they're SOLer.
Well I must be lucky then I just went to my local kmart and they had a few on the list.
I wanted Tiger Woods but the ONLY they didnt have. Oh well I might check the other kmart tomorrow. They did have 3 or 4 titles...
So it might be worth a shot.
Also Chugga I guess Sears is the same way. People are reporting getting the deals at Sears as well. YMMV tho.

Most people are buying them then going places and getting trade in credit. People are saying BlockBuster gives you $12 trade in credit. Not a bad idea.
