The only thing that would ever get me to watch Hellboy again is the fact that it has Selma Blair in it.

i don't even find her THAT hot. Just a great action movie.

I thought the first Hellboy was great.

me too...one of my favorites.

Same here. Great movie.

Man... people really like that Hellboy crap?

:p;):D

Man Hellboy was almost as bad as Jumper.

Never seen more then about 10 min and that was on TV. The movie just never appealed to me.

I hope the box isn't freakin huge. I absolutely love all 3 of those movies after playing the videogame. Yeah I know, how sad is that? I play the Godfather videogame on the PS3 then I finally get around to seeing it. It always seemed like too much of an ordeal to catch one of those 5 hour long TNT showings. Anyways I was close to buying them to see it, but decided to DVR instead and hope it came out on blu-ray eventually and from the looks of it my prayers have been answered.

purchased Jumper as my first BluRay yesterday..I am sure its horrible but Sam's had slim pickings

I enjoyed Jumper for what it is. A mindless popcorn movie. The idea behind the movie is cool. It just gets bogged down with too much story at times.

Funny how inconsistent these review sites can be. I'm not disagreeing with the PQ rating of Gangs of New York at all, of course I haven't even seen it yet, and although it appears to be different reviewers, they destroy Gangs for the DNR and give it 2 stars...however if I remember this was the biggest complaint for those who hated the Patton transfer, and High-def. digest gave it 4 1/2 stars.

Way to send a consistent message to your readers about how your site reviews movies. One more reason to never trust a review site in my opinion.

Chugga
06-30-2008, 12:19 PM
Well Josh Zyber was the one to review it so I don't know if you can take his review seriously. Him and Kenneth Brown has a small tendency to overreact or even worse let their own opinion of a film skew it's overall scores. Peter Bracke is awesome I generally agree with him 99.99% of the time but Kenneth/Josh, ehh I've been known to ignore their reviews on occassion. Not trying to discredit them, but I'd disagreed with them enough times to take some of their reviews with a grain of salt.

It had it's moments like the ending, but the expectations fell flat for me, aside from Sofia Coppola's acting which seemed to suck the life out of each scene...not the best casting choice imo.

Just got a brand new Sony 720 for $177.50 delivered :)

I know it has been asked a million times. And I always hate when someone else asks the same question again.....but for today....I am that person.

Exactly which HDMI cables do I get from monoprice?

I just need 4 cables total....that will run less then 3 feet each....and will not be going through any walls.

1 Cable - PS3 to 720
1 Cable - 360 to 720
1 Cable - DirectTV to 720
1 Cable - 720 to TV

I know Spirits Within looks awesome in HD. I can only imagine what Advent Children will look like since it looked that much better in SD. I think it will end up blinding people with brightness of the colors and such so that is why it isnt out.

Yep. I actually liked the way they protrayed the teleportation power, and I think the effect looks cool for the most part. I think they have Anakin use his powers in a way that seems logical and would probably be likely. There are a couple of scenes where the CGI looks stupid, but otherwise, it is good.

Sadly, the movie would probably be a lot more interesting if they just had Anakin teleporting around for 90 minutes, rather than bogging it down with a story. The story is very loose and doesn't particularly make much sense.

Also, Samuel L Jackson is now just taking every paycheck he can get. He is totally pointless in this movie and brings nothing to the movie.

I wasn't a huge fan of Spirits Within....I absolutely hated the movie for the longest time. I went to go see it in theaters and flipped out when Bahamut was never summoned not even once. Made me immediately hate it, got a good deal on the Blu-ray though and watched it again and if you go into the movie not expecting Bahamut it's actually a pretty good movie, well maybe not the movie itself but the picture quality is impressive.

Yeah, it was disappointing in that end...Square was trying to stray too far from the games and as a result, alienated the fanbase aside from garnering any new fans.

I only watch the film for the visuals as it reminds me of the colonial marines in Aliens. The story and the deaths in particular are rather depressing to endure. The ending is also...well, for anyone who wants to see it, I'll say stop here for spoiler..

The ending for me where captain Gray Edwards dies is a damn shame...he really should have lived and reunited with Aki...cheesy but it would have been nicer.

I'm guess with all of the spirits lifting away from the bodies also probably didn't play well with certain audiences as it may have been too much/offensive for those who are religious.

I would say go all the way to the order screen and if it doesnt give the discount there than just dont complete the order. Although I didnt know that they were still doing the 2 for 30 deal. It isnt still advertised on their site that I can see.

Also who is the girl in your avatar? She looks very familiar, but I just cant think of who it is.

They're 6-foot cables at Big Lots. I thought the monoprice ones were $7 plus shipping, making it not that much of a difference...but that, too, was probably for 6-foot cables. I like to have a little more flexibility there...3 feet is pretty short, especially from the receiver to the TV itself.

Good thing I ran a tape measure.....I didn't realize how short 3ft really is. I can get by with three 3ft cables (all the cables running to the 720)....but I'll definitely need a 6 footer to run from the 720 to the input on my TV.

ok, i've got a question...

i'm thinking of making the jump to lossless audio w/the 720 to go along w/my 60" sony & ps3.

but speaker wise, im only set up for 5.1 (the 5 surround speakers w/ a sub.) but i guess the HD audio is all 7.1? does that not matter?

would i hear a big difference out of my BD's? does that not matter? would it be worth upgrading if i'm not set up for 7.1?

what is 7.1 for that matter? 2 rear center speakers?

ok, i've got a question...

i'm thinking of making the jump to lossless audio w/the 720 to go along w/my 60" sony & ps3.

but speaker wise, im only set up for 5.1 (the 5 surround speakers w/ a sub.) but i guess the HD audio is all 7.1? does that not matter?

would i hear a big difference out of my BD's? does that not matter? would it be worth upgrading if i'm not set up for 7.1?

what is 7.1 for that matter? 2 rear center speakers?

Very Very Very Very little in 7.1. I wouldnt worry about 7.1 for now. 5.1 is more then plenty and it will blow you away.

So NO you do not need 7.1 to get the latest Audio Codecs.

7.1 you add Left Back and Right Back

Show you 5.1 vs 7.1

you're good with 5.1. Most of the blu-rays out don't even support 7.1.

for those of you looking for replacement BD cases, you can go up to your local BB and grab a bunch of the Hanco*k bonus disks. They ring up for .01 and if you get more then 1 every other one after that is free. I picked up 12 of them and cost me .06 plus you dont have to pay tax on it :D

Ah yes, The Godfather. Good movies, so good in fact that they're too good for my collection. I'll pass this time because it seems I've bought this trilogy too many times and it'll sit on my shelf for a year before I even crack it open. I'll buy a couple crappily rated movies that I'll probably watch more instead.

So what does that make 3 of us with the 720 now? Four?

After hearing Cloverfield it's hard to argue with the value you get out of this thing for the money.

I keep looking at the 720. Have to figure out a way to justify spending the money on something I don't really need to the wife though.

Plus, I'm concerned that I won't notice as much difference with my current set of speakers, since they came as part of a Kenwood HTIB like 8 years ago.

Oddly enough, I was looking at the 720 yesterday... BB Canada has it on for $269. Best price I've seen here so far.

It's a little more tempting since I nearly blew my old receiver Friday with Cloverfield... the damn thing shut off in the scene where Hud bites it.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh at this, someone on another board told us about his new receiver he bought....Denon AVR-2808 - http://usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/3526.asp. And how his main source of media for it will be streaming through his Popcorn Hour - http://www.popcornhour.com. So I reply and say, you could have bought a Sony 720 for a whole lot less and would have gained an extra HDMI input. He says "Whole other league...." like the Denon smokes the 720 because it's a Denon. LOL I explain that he will never play anything through his Popcorn Hour that will support any HD audio formats (it doesn't even support them) and he basically just paid out the ass for a Denon to support Dolby Digital 5.1. I said....."congrats". LOL :D

I agree about the whole popcorn hr thing but that Denon blows away the sony by a long shot. I agree if the whole popcorn thing is all he was doing then then the sony would have been the way to go.

Crazy I guess.

Unless he's got a standalone Blu-ray player or a PS3, what benefit would owning the Denon give him over the 720? They're both 7.1 and the 720 has an extra HDMI input. Just curious as to the other benefits....

So if I have $100 from my birthday, $100 in gift cards, $40 BB reward zone dollars, and a 12% off coupon, is there a particular reason that I wouldn't want to buy the Sony 720? Ugh, it is on sale at CC for $229 after coupon.

I'm trying so hard not to buy this thing. I guess if I knew the sound was going to be that much better, I'd get it and not feel as bad about making my wife mad.

This thread is a lot of pressure.

Does the 720 require a powered sub? I don't think mine is currently that type. How would I know? I assume if it isn't plugged in, it isn't powered, correct?

But I'm still in trial mode to see if I really do hear a difference with lossless.

So far disks are batting above .500. Cars sounded about the same, ID4 sounded WAY better and Cloverfield sounded a little better.

So I need a few suggestions as to what else I should toss in the Blu-Station 3...

Where do you find them at BB. I looked around at mine...but didn't see anything. Do you have to make a separate purchase to get them?

Yes the details are on the back of the sticker. There's a code you have to enter on www.Hanc ockMovieCash.com

The sticker on my case says "details on reverse", so I'd imagine so. I haven't bothered peeling mine off yet. I might not even see this movie.

Thank you very much guys.

So I went back to Best Buy today to see if they had anymore Hanc()ck preview disks. Apparently I missed an entire endcap of them. They had to have like 20-30 more of them. I picked up 12 more. so weird.

hdd just posted their review of batman begins blu-ray.

the bd version got 1/2 less star on supplements and 1/2 less star on hi def extras.

...yet got a 1/2 increased star on overall.

(everything else remained same).

but the 1/2 increased star on overall should be correct. this version comes with more. it comes with TDK prologue in hi def. so that should have increased supplements and high def extras, no?

plus the hd dvd got "highly recommended" and the bd only got "recommended" yet it comes with more.

The "highly recommended" vs. "recommended" is something that happened back with a few other titles too and to me it made perfect sense. When Batman Begins was released on HD DVD a long time ago it was one of the best titles out, if you had an HD DVD player you had to have Batman Begins. But it's over a year later, there are hundreds upon hundreds of other titles to choose from and Batman Begins doesn't hold as much weight as it used to.

The best example I can give (I think I did maybe like 20 or so pages back in this thread) is Crank. For a good while Crank was demo worthy material, it was a movie that every person with a Blu-ray player was raving about. Now you ask 100 Blu-ray owners their 10 must have Blu-ray movies and Crank probably doesn't even make a single list.

Also personally I think HDD likes to stir up a bit of contraversy whenever they can. With HD DVD dead that site has lost alot of it's popularity, hell I haven't checked their boards (outside of deals) in months. But you can guarentee people will be posting on the boards about this for days now.

"loot the rest"......and then PM me how many of those looted ones you don't want....and I'll take them. I'll pay for cost and shipping of course.

Since I got into the game a little bit after everyone else....when all those BOGOs came around....I snatched up all the early release stuff......and on a lot of them, the tape sealers on them were so old...that they left a nasty little sticky residue. I hate it......as when I go to pull one out....it sticks to the net Blu Ray and pulls that one out as well. If I can replace all of those for a couple dollars...I'll do it.

If it were me I would spend $400 and grab the onkyo 606. But thats just me.

If it were me...I'd spend 1/2 of that $400 on a more then capable 720 receiver....and put the difference into the speakers

And speaking of the 720....mine showed up yesterday..which was kinda odd. Ordered on ebay on Monday. It was delivered yesterday at 1pm. Less then 48 hours from an ebay seller. Pretty damned good.

IMO Sony's low end receiver are not up to par. The ES line or flagship line is aweseome but expensive as hell.

That was my point about spending the extra on a better quailty built receiver and it doesnt have to be the Onkyo line.

I noticed that.

But when the most common thing amongst the complaints is the "manual"....and how confusing it is.....I really don't listen to "Sony sucks" lynch mob.

There are some valid points in those complaints...but it is an entry point receiver for a sub $300 cost. You're not going to get every codec and every bell and whistle thats now available.

I dunno...once I have mine hooked up...I'll see for myself. If I need to get rid of it...I'm sure I can sell it for more then what I bought it at :)

I must be lost.....because I thought the 720 was just the exact opposite.

It doesn't handle ALL HD audio formats....but it will pass through the formats already decoded by the PS3

umm, the 720 is a pass through receiver. The audio decoding is all done on the player.

Video however is not pass through if that's what you meant.

I think it depends.

The 820 has another HDMI input (4) and decodes the lattest codecs

The 920 does all that the 820 does and have video upconversion built in.

I'd probably go to an Onkyo, Denon or Yamaha before going to the 820 or 920 unless $ was a major factor.

Yeah I meant video. And the 720 DOES handle all HD audio formats via PCM. Like we already covered before I bought it: For a PS3 owner it should be all you need right?

Yes and no... by the looks of the it, the 720 is about the bare minimum of receiver one should go with if using the PS3 as a BD player. Its good receiver, but there are better options out there for a few more dollars.

IMO, I think it's going to come down to personal taste. If the 720 works for you, I say stick with it as the price is incredible to enjoy lossless sound. :)

If you're a little more picky about sound, then an upgrade to better name receiver is probably in order.

Make no mistake though, this is an entry level receiver.

A very nice receiver, but definately expensive.

I have a feeling that in a year or two the price will come down on the later models.

Just to play devil's advocate here for the 720, tell me what features a supposed higher end receiver would have that would benefit me as a PS3 owner that the 720 doesn't have.

I hope Chris will answer this too.

1. More power
2. Future proof (PS3 kicks the bucket, you may want to replace it with a stand alone and have the receiver do the decoding).
3. Better sound - this one is subjective, but it seems to be the concensus on AVS.
4. Better build - just look at the inputs for the center and rear channels on the back of the 720. Poor quality.

On the plus side, the 720 is dirt cheap... to the point where if you do decide you want something better down the road you don't feel too bad about ditching it.

Nope you are correct Scott. Biggest thing would be Sound for me. To me the sound from the 720 fails compared to the others. Also Build Quailty as well. I agree its cheap enough where if you want you can always get something better in a few years.

Yes the inputs are VERY CHEAP I noticed that today at CC when I was looking at it.

Sbrooks if you like it then I wouldnt worry about it.

That's the $250 dollar question... I'll give it a workout this weekend decide what I want to do.

Like I said earlier, I've had mixed results so far... I did have a bad feeling taking it out of the box and comparing it to my old Yamaha RX-V520 (http://www.yamaha.com/yec/products/productdetail.html?CNTID=200239&CTID=5000300), so perhaps I should listen to my gut take it back and wait on a higher quality unit.

I've always wanted more of the boutique speakers like
Axiom
Paradigm
B&W
The first two I've never even seen but have heard nothing but good things about.
I've heard B&W's and, wow! They were like $1000 a piece though.
I'm rockin' JBL's on my setup, nothing special at all, the best I could afford at the time.

I own a pair of Polk Audio speakers and they seem to have the best output for bass, compared to my Bose 5.1 setup.

Taking vacation, so I won't be around as much over the weekend.

If anyone is interested in those BR cases, let me know. PM is probably best, since this thread might be pretty long when I get back Tuesday.

I have 25. I'd prefer to sell them all to one person, but I'm willing to do smaller sets of like 10 or something. Maybe a couple bucks to cover gas, plus shipping?? We can work something out.
