ESPN doesn't always broadcast in HD so that's why it's full screen and doesn't look as good. There are a bunch of channels that do the same so instead of stretching it across the whole screen and calling it HD like AMC they just use the SD feed.

So after more than a month, I finally got my lattest order from Sigelectronics.

Stupid Canada post lost the package, so I had to wait 15 days before a claim could be made and then another 10 waiting.

On the plus side, they refunded the shipping so I only paid for the movies :) (Predator, Enchanted, Juno, Bee Movie)

Sony 720 owners, I need a little help.

I have my HD sat box connected to the 720, but it's a DVI to HDMI cord as the sat box has only DVI out. I can get a picture, but no sound even with the optical plugged in.

Anyone know if there is a way around this?

Sbrooks, I'm going to try and see if Best Buy will match the 6ave.com price on the Samsung (Samsung LN37A450) I'm looking at. Do you have any tips on getting them to match it, or do you know if they can even go as low as $796 on it? I thought you might be able to look it up. Thanks!!

If I get one of the LCD TVs that I'm looking at, would you guys recommend the extended warranty on it? I was thinking that LCDs have been around awhile and have a pretty good track record overall. Didn't know if I should drop the extra dough or not.

I don't own a 720, but allow me to chip in. Forgive any basics I cover that you already know/tried.

DVI only carries picture, so you do need to use the optical cord. My guess would be that you need to set the sat box to output the sound on the optical connection, if you haven't done so already. My cable box has seperate picture and sound settings, so I can control the output of each.

The only other thing I can think of is that since you are using an HDMI connection, the receiver is thinking it is receiving all the information sound/video from that one connection. I would assume if you flipped it to the input for the optical cable, you would get sound, but no picture.

Not sure if you can designate the 720 to just pass the video straight through and select a seperate sound input. It sounds like the pass-through on the 720 isn't passive, meaning it doesn't pass the signal, unless it is selected, which I guess makes sense given that you have 4 HDMI in and only 1 out.

If you aren't getting sound from the optical cable if you flip the 720 to the input for that, then I would say you should be able to adjust that in the sat box somewhere.

My guess is that the 720 is expecting everything to come over the HDMI and if it doesn't, then you are probably screwed.

PrimeBane
07-10-2008, 11:17 PM
Figured it out.

You're right on the last point... the 720 expects the sound over HDMI and it overrides any other digital sound signals.

However, I moved the optical from Sat to TV and I now have sound. :)

It's funny, I get the picture from the Sat box on both the TV and SAT setting... crazy Sony.

A bit OT, but I thought it was worth posting - Check your local grocery stores as some of them have deals for purchasing 10 general mills products and getting 2 free movie tickets, I read about it over on slick deals and scored 2 tickets today. I believe it is all stores that are operated by Supervalu, http://www.supervalu.com/retail/retail.jsp - Look under the grocery store tab and see if any of those stores are in your area, then check the ad to make sure they are offering the deal.

I'm not sure how I would accomplish that. All the TVs in these places are hooked up to their generic feed. The CC one didn't really have much sports in the loop. Maybe the HHGregg one will.

Dad mostly watches baseball, so I suppose that sport moves slow enough that it wouldn't matter much. :D

I posted this in the PS3 thread, but I thought I'd take a shot here, too.....

Can anyone help with this....or has this happened to anyone else??

I am having a problem with downloading "automatic software update" for Guitar Hero 3 on my Playstation 3. The download process will freeze and eventually say "an error with download had occurred." I know it's not a problem with my Internet connection because I am able to download demos, add-ons and the latest Playstation 3's 2.41 system update with no problem.

By the way, it was happening before and after I did the 2.41 udpate.

Please help, it's preventing me from being able to sign in and go online to play. I called Sony support but after a troubleshooting session they weren't much help. They directed me to the individual game company's support lines, but I can't imagine it's a problem with them since it's happening to different games from different companies.

Thats what I do when I look at TV's. I have them change it or I just grab the remote and change the channel myself.

I check out the HD Feed as well as the SD feed. Just to compare.

Well, I know that Sony certifies all of the downloads, so it shouldn't "technically" be a Sony issue. Since it is a GH update, I'd call Activision and see if they can help you. Have you tried posting/looking at the GH message boards as well?

I don't understand this part of your message, so that confused me a bit.

You could always try saving your game data, deleting it, and then trying to do the update again.

It is on a closed loop with just one feed. You know the standard demo real those stores run. I don't think there will be anything to see on another channel. It wasn't playing regular TV.

I might be able to get them to hook up a DVD player to it.

found this over on HDD

JULY 11 | Warner Home Video is launching aggressive pricing initiatives for the fourth quarter, including its most comprehensive Blu-ray Disc promotion yet, say retailers.

Starting early September and rolling through first-quarter 2009, Warner will offer a Blu-ray point-of-sale rebate program with which retailers will essentially be able to order participating catalog titles for around $11.

Even with a retail mark-up on the featured titles—including The Fugitive, Enter the Dragon, Clockwork Orange, The Shining, The Aviator, Road Warrior and Swordfish—the price tag to consumers should be significantly less than the titles’ current average of $20 to $25 retail price at outlets such as Amazon.com and Best Buy.

In this program, retailers will buy the titles at their present pricing but obtain rebate money back upon the sale of each unit. That should ultimately amount to a relatively inexpensive $11 cost for retailers.

Additionally, Warner will offer rebates, although less extensive, for newer Blu-ray releases, including 300, The Departed, I Am Legend, Ocean’s 13 and We Are Marshall. This layer of the Blu-ray program also will run from early September to the first quarter, according to store sources.

The consumer price for these titles is likely to fall somewhere between $17 and $20. That would still represent a deal for shoppers, as titles such as 300 are now falling between $24 and $30 at outlets such as Amazon and Best Buy.

Wow, I missed this news from HD Digest. I'm not a fan of Children of the Corn but Hellraiser always has a spot in my collection.

'Hellraiser,' 'Children of the Corn' Planned for Blu-ray

There's no date yet, but Anchor Bay says it is planning to bring the '80s horror faves 'Hellraiser' and 'Children to the Corn' to Blu-ray sometime in the next few months.
Two of the most popular scarefests of their time, both 'Hellraiser' and 'Children of the Corn' would go on to amass their own devoted cult followings as well as spawn a seemingly never-ending series of sequels.
With both titles among the hottest DVD sellers in Anchor Bay's library, the company says they are currently planning to bring both the original 'Hellraiser' and 'Children of the Corn' to Blu-ray as early as this Halloween, or at the latest by the first quarter of 2009.
Given the early nature of the news, there is no word on specs or supplemental details, although both titles have recently been remastered in HD for airing on cable and satellite networks.
We'll certainly keep you posted as soon as further word from Anchor Bay comes to us. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, we've added listings for 'Hellraiser' and 'Children of the Corn' to the "Release Dates Pending" section of our Blu-ray Release Schedule (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html).

You want to know what's really sad about it? Blow was a New Line film until Warner swallowed them recently. Think about the previously released New Line Blu-ray's (Hairspray, Golden Compass, Pans Labyrinth, Shoot 'Em Up) all released with 7.1 DTS-HD MA soundtracks. We all know of Warner's inconsistency with their own films. Now they are gimping New Line's since they own them now. GRRRRRR!!

Then when it gets there all the icons for videos and pictures won't display preview icons. They all show a spinning arrow and nothing will load. So I reboot my PS3 and now it won't show there's a Blu-ray in the drive. The icon doesn't even appear. Everything else plays fine: videos on my hard drive and on my media server play just fine. This happened to me on my 20GB PS3...the explanation I got was "the blu-ray player died" whatever the hell that means, but apparently it happens. At the time I had the Best Buy warranty (still do) and they swapped me out for a 60GB, which I still have.

Yeah I'm running 2.41. I spoke with Sony's tech support which surprisingly was very nice. Unfortunately he told me my Blu-ray laser is probably dying and I would need to send it back for repair. It's out of warranty so there's $150 I didn't want to spend. :(

Tell them the FW bricked your player and see if they fix it for free. :D

Yeah, I got the same coverage here in Canada at Future Shop, so I am hoping mine "dies" when a new one comes out, LOL!!!!

Sold over 50 movies at $2.00 a movie. Which I didnt think they would sell for that much. But had no problems selling them.

It was really funny to be honest.

That's what I'd expect used DVDs to go for at a garage sale. You make some nice money there.

I think we might still have 1 VCR up in the attic somewhere.

My dad's thinking about picking up this baby. Nice price at 1499 at Nebraska Furniture Mart for those near omaha.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000SBCA54/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

so my parents went down to omaha and looked at this tv, they had already paid for it. After I got the messages about motion blur, i told them to make sure they saw it in action before they bought it, and they didn't like it. So they talked to the salesman and got the next model up for the same price. I guess it's a w3000 instead of the v3000.

But, they got it at the same price :) 1499.

Good thats I posted about the motion Blur on that set. I didnt want to come accross like the TV sucked so I hope you didnt take it that way.

I just didnt want them to be upset with the purchase.

I hope they enjoy their new TV.

Yeah we had them marked at $1.00 to start. Then the first person to show up bought 12 without blinking. Then we got thinking and pulled out a crap load more. We were going to keep certain one's. (GF wanted to keep some) then we said lets mark them at $2 and see what happens. Everyone that came there picked up VHS tapes.

People flocked to them like Sbrooks does with BR's :D

I just laughed..

I did this last year. A bunch of older people picked up a bunch of my VHS tapes. $2-$3 each. Hey, if it still works for them, let them keep buying them. Gives me more space.;)

Yeap except everyone that bought them will late 30's early 40's... Strange I guess.. No older people which I guess was the big surprise to me.

I talked to a 2 different people and they had HDTV's but didnt care if it was on VHS or DVD.. They just wanted the movie.

Atleast now I can catch up on some BR movies I have been wanting.

LOL thats a sale? should be more like $14.95 - $19.95 for a sale IMHO.

I didnt like the move and sold my copy awhile back.

If you liked the movie then I would wait for a little better deal.

But the PQ is really really amazing. I was really impressed with this one for PQ

$25 is acceptable for that blu-ray at brick and mortar. Definitely not a sale, but if you want it, I wouldn't feel bad about spending $25 on it at all.

That speedy guy is awesome. Circuit City tried to sue him last year when he leaked the price drop on the PS3. He leaked it like 2 weeks ahead of time and I think Sony really got pissed at CC, so they went after speedy. He laid low for awhile and then apparently got the lawsuit cleared. He posts the ads like 2 weeks ahead of time from Target/CC/BB.

Ordered the Samsung for $800 for my parents this weekend. Couldn't beat that price on a TV like that. It seems pretty nice. Couldn't get Best Buy or anyone to match the online price. Unless it puts the price below their cost, I really don't understand why they don't match online places, at least the big ones like Amazon. Why would I want to pay more and tax at BB versus paying significantly less online at Amazon?

At Best Buy a guy said he would look to see if he could match or give me the best price they could. It was priced at $999 and he said the best he could do was $899. I told him HHGregg had it for $857, and he said they could match that. I said well then $899 isn't the best you can do is it? He said yes, unless they had it cheaper. I just laughed at him at this point and left, since he was being absurd.

At Amazon you have to pay shipping though, do you not?

Personally I'd pay the little bit extra to buy local... I hate trying to return crap online. Huge PITA.

Unfortunate news for a collection of both (or possibly a trilogy of) Hellboy movies...

Guillermo del Toro states...

The only problem may be for collectors. Since Hellboy was a Sony Pictures release and Hellboy II comes from Universal Studios, a DVD set of the two films is unlikely.

“I know, isn’t that a ***** to figure out?” he said. “I have the same concern, and I think the answer is we won’t unless someone strikes a deal that no one wants to make. I think that if at all possible I think the second and [eventual] third movie would get a package, but the first one won’t be there.”

meh...all i care about are seeing the movies, how they're packaged means little to me. I always feel like I get screwed anyway by buying the first movie separately only for them to keep coming out with more, and then a box set. See Resident Evil trilogy.

Yeah I'm not crazy about the double dipping but with buying movies on Blu...I think as visual of a franchise as Hellboy is with its various creatures and not to mention Red himself...a nice Blu-collection of a trilogy would have been sweet.

Anyone getting The Bank Job tomorrow? That'd be the only one I'd pick up, but being that I spend a bunch of money on movie figures today, I'm kinda on the fence now. It'd be a blind buy for me.

I don't have much faith in Jason Statham anymore. He's solidifying himself as a B-movie action star. And B-movies suck balls.

Well, maybe I'll see what the actual price is and look at a 606 with a set of speakers similarly priced.

The main issue I have had is that a speaker set tends to be more than I can justify paying.

And I like that these appear to hang on the wall.

Here ya go...

What does it mean to be Verified?

Verification increases the security of the PayPal network. Verified members have successfully completed PayPal's Verification system to establish their identity with us. The Verification process varies by country or region. For example, in the U.S., a Verified member has added and confirmed a bank account with PayPal. In Germany, a Verified member has completed a bank transfer or the Expanded Use Process. In most countries and regions where PayPal is available, a Verified member has added a credit card and completed the Expanded Use process.

yeah, your mailing address has to match your checking account's informations from your bank. So lets say, whatever credit or debit card you may have listed on paypal does not match the address you're providing the sender, that address is not verified and they will not send it. Some make exceptions.

Why not open a new checking account? It can be set aside for just online use. In case someone messes with the account, you can shut it down immediately.

You have to have your bank account to be verified removing it makes you unverified.

Edit: Yeap if you remove your Bank Account you become unverified even tho I have a valid card card setup. I just tried removing my bank account and I get a message

"This is your only confirmed bank account on file. If you remove it now, your account status will instantly become unverified. Becoming unverified means you can no longer add funds via electronic funds transfer, your credit card charge limit is reinstated, and you lose protections safeguarded under PayPal's Buyer and Seller Protection Policies."

I'm probably one of the few who enjoyed this one, but digitalbits announced this for 9/16...

http://i37.tinypic.com/296n7rl.jpg
Here's some official details for Warner's Speed Racer, set to debut on DVD and Blu-ray Disc on 9/16. The DVD will be available in anamorphic widescreen and full frame versions (SRP $28.98 each), each with Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. Extras will include 2 featurettes (the Spritle in the Big Leagues tour of the set with Paulie Litt, and a Speed Racer: Supercharged! featurette on the drivers, cars and tracks of the World Racing League). The Blu-ray Disc version will include that, along with a Speed Racer: Car-Fu Cinema featurette on the special effects, the Speed Racer: Crucible Challenge interactive game and a Digital Copy version of the film. Unfortunately, we've confirmed that the Blu-ray is a BD-25 with just Dolby Digital 5.1 audio rather than TrueHD, which is a real shame. If ever a film deserved BD-50/TrueHD treatment on Blu-ray, it's this one. I suppose, however, in light of how badly the film tanked, it shouldn't be unexpected. In any case, we can also confirm that the Blu-ray will be a 3-disc set (though sadly, not as good as it sounds), including the BD disc and 2 DVD discs, one with the Digital Copy and one with the Speed Racer: Crucible Challenge interactive game. Here's the cover art for all three versions...

I've really held off buying some BD movies recently as well. Just can't justify buying a movie for $20 unless it is something I really want. I'll be getting Iron Man and Incredible Hulk for example because I know I'll watch them again. I would have gotten Batman Begins, but I already have the DVD and I figure there will be a 2 pack or some deal when Dark Knight comes out.

well it'd be smart for them to keep providing analog, look at all the people who don't feel the need to get digital ( especially with a SD set ), the company would have a huge number of subscribers.

Is it just me or are they mostly announcing a bunch of crap and recycled HD DVD titles for blu-ray right now? And charging $30 bucks for them.

Where are the great titles? And flame me all you want, but I don't consider The Godfather Trilogy blu-ray great, it's cinema great, but not blu-ray great.

I suppose Kill Bill 1 and 2 qualify, but seriously, there's SO much crap being announced, it seems like every day there's 2-3 titles that make me shake my head.

The BDA has no reason to bring out the AAA titles now. The war is won and they're not putting any pressure on any studio to bring out big new releases... they'll wait now until sales are decent enough to warrant the release of LOTR, Aliens, Star Wars, Gladiator, etc.

The same thing happened with DVD less than 10 years ago. :(

Well sales for BR players are very very very low. Hell I think PS3 owns 98% of the market for BR players. Thats sad.

BR needs to start to price the Disc at low prices and get rid of alot of them which just sit and collect dust.

Target pricing sucks even tho they have a huge selection

I was at Sam's Club (samthing as a Costco) and their pricing was unreal. Hell Black Hawk Down was $35.99 and Wild Hogs was $27xx..

This is way I rent from Netflix now and will not buy and more BR's..

The 880 comes with a charging base which makes life easier IMO.

You can buy it and replace however many other remotes you have... they are completely programmable by plugging it into your computer.

About the only thing it can't do is control the PS3 (directly anyways, there are ways around it).

Plus they're easy as hell for anyone to use. They're based on activities. So if you want to watch tv, you press "Watch TV" and the tv comes on, the cable or sat box comes on and your HT (if you have one) comes on. All with the appropriate inputs. :)

Yeah, the 550 uses batteries but surprisingly they last a long time. Plus, I have rechargeable ones for it. Two of the activity buttons are starting to be unresponsive though, so I think I'll replace it with this one. Normally, I wouldn't worry about it, since the remotes are so expensive, but this makes it easier to replace.

What PB said. It makes watching TV and all your other stuff so much easier. It really will control everything, unlike your standard "universal" remote.

The biggest thing for me is that the wife can watch TV or a DVD all without my help. Previously, this involved having me come turn everything else (TV, DVD, HT) on for her and setting it all to the right input. Now she pushes "Watch TV". :D

It was a tough choice but we went with the 505. London Drugs has that promo for $100 off the receiver and then a bunch of rebates and credits which pretty much makes it free. The PVR which I did want but couldn't justify spending approximately $500 (I think?) for a feature that might be used once or twice a month.

I just wish Starchoice used HDMI instead of DVI, kinda weird but whatever.

There is no catch apparently, I'm going to have to do that myself this weekend. I'm down to 4GB's and with my downloading E3 trailers and more rock band content it's only going farther down each and every day. It's those damn game installs. I went through my list of games that I had installed onto my PS3 (I think it's something like 30 or so) and when each of them are taking up anywhere from 500MB to 2GB's your HD is completely gone. I don't know how those with the 20GB PS3 are pulling it off.
