I still wonder what it is going to get listed at here in Canada.
Probably the usual $32.99 ass raping.
Although if one waits 2-3 weeks, Sigelectronics will have it for $22.50 :)

For those still buying HD DVDs in Canada
Futureshop has 50% off all remaining HD DVD stock. I picked up 5 titles for less than $35 on Friday. :D
Walmart has 2 for $10 Warner HD DVDs... YMMV on this one as it hasn't shown up in all stores yet.

Dang why not just get a projector?
I am just not big into DLP's but some are.. But 17ft away I would invest into a projector IMHO.
But 73" should be good for 17ft away

That's a pretty good price for that DLP. I've had a 62" DLP for 4 years now and love it....only drawback is the bulbs, but i imagine they've improved the life of those by now....you'd think.

Yeah I think they use to last 2 - 3 years for bulbs. Hopefully its alot longer now. Every 2 years dropping $150 or more on bulbs would suck. Every 4 years wouldnt be so bad.
I think around 60" would be the biggest TV I would go with anything larger I would get a Projector. I need to finish my downstairs and get a projector and be done with it.

Check to see if it actually resovles all the lines of a 1080p image first. Many TVs claim they do, but don't actually show the complete image.

True, but BB is considered catalogue by Warners... I'm not sure TF is by Paramount/DM yet or not.
I'd be very surprised to see it for less than $29.99 in the Great White North. I imagine one will be able to find it in the US for $19.99 or less on sale.

Question...Great White North? Obviously this refers to Canada, but what specifically?
a.) Great White Sharks swim up there.
b.) The snow blankets most of that region, hence "white".
c.) Mostly white folks who inhabit the area.
So which is it? :D

Next week I imagine the talk will start up again. Here's what I'm thinking of getting that week.
For Sure: Dark City
Likely: Doomsday, Lost Boys
Possible: Both Harold and Kumar movies
There's also a ton of blu's coming out that were on HD DVD (or that should've been with the Jack Ryan set) which I already have, otherwise it would've been a very crazy week indeed.

But I'll have to agree I liked Can't Hardly Wait. It came out when I was in high school and alot of the personalities in the movie were hilariously accurate. The only thing I didn't like was how it was supposedly a high school graduation party and what like 3 people total were drunk? Come on now....Superbad was far more believable.

For all Canadians:
Is it better to order Blu-ray movies from Amazon.com or Amazon.ca? And what kinds of "extra charges" are involved?
I'm sick of waiting for prices to come down at Futureshop, Best Buy, and HMV.
PrimeBane

Amazon.com will have better pricing 99 times out of 100.
Shipping from .com is $8.00 for the first movie and $3 per movie after. Shipping is usually free at .ca (over X number of dollars). You'll get dinged GST from .ca, but no taxes from .com. You could get hit with brokerage fees from .com, but it's a pretty rare thing in my experience, especially with larger orders. I've had about 20 packages arrive from .com and have yet to be dinged with brokerage fees.
Your best bet, if you're a patient man, is buy them from www.sigelectronics.com. They are Canadian so you'll get charged GST, but flat shipping is $7.99 for any number of movies. New releases normally show up 2-3 weeks later and only cost $22.50.
Also keep an eye on www.hdaddicts.com from time to time... they'll often have some pretty good sales. They don't charge GST, but shipping can be high.
Also check out http://www.bigpicvideo.com/ They're fairly new (sold on ebay before), but based out of Edmonton. Pretty good prices so far. Maybe you'll get an option for local pickup. :)

Press release on the new Onkyo HTIB coming out. I'm still looking at the S6100. The only difference I can see between the two is a better iPod dock and being Sirius satellite on the S7100.
Onkyo Introduces 2 High-Quality Home Theater Packages with HDMI Audio/Video, 1080i Video Upscaling, & More
07/22/08 - UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ -- Onkyo has introduced two new 7.1-channel home theater packaged systems that combine the latest in high resolution audio and video processing with the simplicity of an all-in-one system. Both the HT-S7100 and the HT-S6100 include powerful 130 watt-per-channel A/V receivers with HDMI inputs for up to four sources, including internal processing for the latest high resolution audio formats and 1080i video upscaling. The receivers are matched with a high-performance 7.1-channel speaker and active subwoofer package, and the company's highly regarded iPod dock.
"These systems are a simple, foolproof, and extremely cost-effective solution for high end home theater," commented Onkyo Marketing Manager Paul Wasek. "They include all the audio and video processing needed to take full advantage of the audio and video capabilities of Blu-Ray disc players and modern HD video displays, without the complexities of an individual component system. With one-cable HDMI connectivity, Audyssey automatic room setup and calibration, and Onkyo's signature audio performance, these systems are an unbeatable value."
For connectivity, the HT-S7100 and HT-S6100 A/V receivers each feature four HDMI inputs, including support for 1080p video and DeepColor™ capability. There is internal audio processing for the latest Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, and DTS-HD High Resolution Audio formats, making it possible to extract the full audio potential of the Blu-ray disc format. For video, the receivers include Faroudja DCDi Edge processing that is capable of upscaling all video inputs to 1080i resolution for output via HDMI, improving picture quality and simplifying the connection to HD video displays.
Onkyo's HT-S7100 and HT-S6100 each feature seven satellite speakers and a powerful subwoofer for deep bass reproduction. The front L/R and horizontal center channel speakers each feature a pair of 3-1/8 inch cone woofers and a high quality 1-inch balanced tweeter. For a coherent and timbre-matched surround field, the included surround speakers each use the same drivers as the front speakers, but employ only a single woofer. Each system includes a high-power downfiring subwoofer with a 10-inch cone driver with an internal 290 watt amplification module. All crossover points in each system can be set to any of eight possible settings for ideal integration with the environment and listener preferences.
Each of the new systems includes the highly acclaimed Audyssey 2EQ room correction and calibration system, greatly improving and speeding up setup and optimization of the loudspeaker system in any environment. They also employ Audyssey's Dynamic EQ algorithm, which refines the system's frequency response and surround levels moment-by-moment to compensate for deteriorations in the listening experience at different volume levels. When used in combination with the Audyssey 2EQ system, this feature tailors the receiver's output to correct for room acoustics, listening position, and playback-level distortions, delivering an overall experience that is a much closer match to what the audio production engineers originally intended.
The Onkyo HT-S7100 and HT-R6100 each include a version of Onkyo's exclusive iPod dock/charging units. The HT-S7100 features the A/V capable DS-A1XP dock, while the HT-S6100 includes the audio-only DS-A1L.
Both of the systems include a full-function RI (Remote Interactive) remote control and Onkyo's RIHD (Remote Interactive over HDMI) capability allows them to seamlessly integrate with other leading brand-name devices, including all Toshiba CE-Link equipment and selected Panasonic VIERA Link, Sharp, and Samsung products. Each includes a 30-preset AM/FM tuner. The HT-S7100 is also Sirius Satellite Radio Ready for those desiring to add this service to their entertainment system. (need to add that 1 pair of speaker stands is included in this package)
Finally, the HT-S7100 and HT-S6100 each include Onkyo's new Music Optimizer software, which improves the quality of MP3 and AAC encoded audio source material. While these compressed audio formats sound quite acceptable over small headphones or PC speaker systems, when reproduced on a full-scale home theater system the loss of high-frequency information becomes much more apparent. The Music Optimizer employs sophisticated equalization and optimization algorithms to overcome these faults, and enhances the reproduction quality of digitally compressed music.
The Onkyo HT-S7100 will be available in August at a suggested retail price of $799. The HT-S6100 is now shipping and has a suggested retail price of $699.
Onkyo, which means 'audio' or 'sound' in Japanese, has been producing precision audio components for over a half-century. The company's philosophy is to deliver products that are superbly designed and built to a consistently outstanding standard of excellence. Today, Onkyo is at the forefront of the home theater and digital revolutions. -----------------------
And the Japanese Amazon site has revealed that Warner's Matrix Trilogy Blu-ray Disc set (due in Japan on 11/19) will come packaged in a replica of the Nebuchadnezzar. (Thanks to Bits reader Jim J. for that link.) Warner has acknowledged to The Bits that it's coming this year, so we expect The Matrix Trilogy to be announced for release here in the U.S. very soon.

Warner Home Video has announced the long-delayed Blu-ray release of The Ultimate Matrix Collection for the 14th of October, priced at around $129.95. The set will arrive on seven discs, which will include a mixture of both Blu-ray and standard definition DVDs. Full specs have yet to be revealed, but you can almost guarantee that they will be identical to the previously released HD DVD version. We'll bring you full details as soon as we have them,

I'd probably spend a the extra money for a better set... I guess it really depends on how long you plan to use the Insignia as your main tv.

So I watched my first ever Universal Blu-ray today with "The Mummy"....one of my favorite parts of the move to high def is seeing all of the studios new intro's for high def. And I gotta say Universals was a little weak. I thought seeing the earth kinda light up would be a sight but it's not really all that it's cracked up to be. I think Disney still has the best disk intro followed by Paramount. Where you get a crappy SD Paramount logo and it all of a sudden opens up into HD. New Line is also awesome but it hurts my eyes.
I also thoroughly disagree with it's 4 star picture rating....there were times when it was 4-4.5, but the details were sorely lacking in alot of spots.

So I watched my first ever Universal Blu-ray today with "The Mummy"....one of my favorite parts of the move to high def is seeing all of the studios new intro's for high def. It's all kinds of kick ass. I wish every Blu-ray had a DTS-HD MA soundtrack. That way I would know it would be loud, clear and I wouldn't have to turn it up because of DialNorm on TrueHD soundtracks.

How's the DTS-MA track on this?
The sound was absolutely amazing. Then the scarabs come and attack and you hear them coming from the rear speakers then all of a sudden they are coming from every angle and every speaker is pumping out their swarm. I'll admit the sound on the movie was indeed impressive.
Still not impressed with it's intro though. And no previews? Whats up with that? Thats 50% of the reason I bought the movie.

That's the first time I've ever heard anyone complain about the lack of previews ;) ... I hate when they are at the start of a movie (I'm lookin at YOU Disney).
The Mummy was lacking for details on the HD DVD versio as well... The Mummy Return has much more pop to the PQ IMO.

Previews are what make a movie. Who went to the Dark Knight expecting only to see the Dark Knight? No one. You go to see the new James Bond movie, the Watchmen, Tropic Thunder, etc. It's like they are fine icing on an already impressive cake, if you somehow were to eat icing before cake.
Sure I wanted to see both of the Mummy movies but a big reason why I bought them was because I figured Universal would have had like a giant intro saying "This is Univeral Blu-ray, the look and sound of slightly better than perfect!". Or something like that. And then have clips from all of their upcoming releases all mashed up into one seizure enducing preview. But no luck.
Their paper insert was pretty cool though with box art for both Heroes Series 1&2 on Blu-ray, pics from both Hulks (woohoo) and a few others.

Theres really only one preview I hate and thats the one that tells me to stop stealing. I find it to be very insulting. So I just paid $20-$30 for your movie (which with my tastes probably isn't even good) and you're gonna talk to me like a child telling me "you wouldn't steal a car, you wouldn't steal a purse"....hell I also wouldn't steal a blu-ray as you can tell by the fact that I had to BUY this movie to see this advertisement.
Don't friggin lecture me about stealing before I watch a movie that I BOUGHT.

Exactly. I'm all for previews. But put them in the "extras" section......not in the frist 20 minutes of the disc.

Lionsgate looks like the watch builder demo that Best Buy used to run when Blu-ray first came out. It doesn't impress me. Watch a New Line movie and tell me their intro doesn't kill Lionsgate. Just make sure you wear sunglasses because it gets bright and amazing all at the same time.

Universal has a pretty cool Blu-ray intro, I just thought their actual Universal intro could have been a little better. It didn't really seem all that HD to me in comparison to the greatness that is New Line, Disney, etc.
As for this tuesday I'm skipping Doomsday, the only reason I was ever going to buy it was because it was the first Universal title on Blu-ray but the Mummy movies kinda got there first. I'll be picking up Beowulf, Dark City, Harold&Kumar 1 and 2, and Never Back Down. I'm getting Dark City only because you drool over it every single day. If it sucks it's on your shoulders.

I'm getting stationed in New Cumberland, PA. I drove up to look around Thur/Fri and I'm really looking forward to it. You'll never understand how psyched I was to see a Barnes and Noble and a Taco Bell. I went into a Best Buy and was amazed at the selection for BRs. Dover still thinks that VHS is the place to be and that a 36' TV is all the rage. Good riddance!
Just remembered another preview before the Dark Knight. Frigging Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2.

Seriously, it's one of my favorites, but you all know my movie tastes so take it with a grian of salt. However, regardless of whether you think it's a phenomenal movie or not, it's very unique with a fantastic "mood", and it has J Connelly.

I liked the movie alot, but I was afraid to speak up because Jaylisjayp would go crazy and start yelling about how awesome Dark City is. But then again I'm a huge fan of Jack Black and don't think I've ever seen anything from him that I didn't like (minus Nacho Libre, that doesn't count).

Watched 21 last night. Good picture quality and great sound. I'd say the picture quality was better, but there isn't any real big-time stuff happening, so it is hard to compare it to some of the typical top-tier stuff. All the wide shots of Vegas look great though.
Movie is sort of average overall, but I don't think anyone was expecting more than that.

Theres a special feature of them doing an entire like 10-15 minute long routine but in the movie itself they get like a 30-45 second cameo where they don't even do anything crazy. A couple of the jabberwocky's are actually extras (without their masks on) but still thats only like a 15 second cameo.
