Warner has been doing combos for day and date releases for a while now. Only catalogue titles are HD DVD only.

Nice pick ups... let us know how T2 is as I'm VERY interested in importing it at some point.

T2 is Blu-ray only in North America... however the distribution in Europe is HD DVD.

Currently I'd rather pay $40 for a movie than $700 for a player and $30 for the movie.

if you end up getting this...i'd be interested to hear about the picture quality. You'd think Blu-Ray would've taken the time to ensure this one was a premier title, but I wonder if it was blu-ray or just the quality of the film.

What it was missing was, a good story.:D

You take Sandman out of it and you still have the same movie. It felt rushed, like they tried to please everyone by throwing everything in it.

I just finished watching Tears of the Sun, and I have to say, on my setup at least, it is the best looking non-animated disc I've seen on either format....definitely Blu-Ray. Better than Crank, better than BHD and better than KOH.

Wow....pretty good flick, too. The last 30 minutes make up for some slow-moving parts earlier.

Nip/Tuck to come out in both formats this September

Wild Hogs will arrive in August from Beuna Vista (BD only)

Blade Runner will arrive in October... sounds like just HD DVD for now although the info is pretty new.

PrimeBane
05-14-2007, 12:47 PM
I doubt we'll see any major shifts until 2008...

I guess you could consider Warner releasing the Matrix set as a minor shift, but I think that's more a message to the BDA to get their crap together on BD-J.

Heck, the HD DVD version of Planet Earth outsold the BD version so far (just by a hair mind you) so not all is lost on that side. :)

Mmmm, I'll be picking up The Fountain tomorrow, one of the main reasons I invested in a high def format to begin with.

Once Blade Runner comes out, I'll have 3 of my favorite movies (Children of Men, BR, and The Fountain) in glorious high definition.

Now, just to get Gladiator on HD-DVD...

Well, it was my favorite movie of 06, just ahead of Children of Men, and possibly my favorite of all time - what is your taste in film? I've heard people compare it to 2001, but I hated 2001.

At the very least, it should be visually stunning - it was in theaters. Just need to hope the transfer does it justice.

Next week is very scary, I don't have to worry about the Matrix but I could see myself picking up 6-7 movies depending on how well my local stores stock their shelves and what type of mood I'm in when I arrive.

This week I've got 2 missions...The Fountain and Stomp the Yard. Now that FYE carries movies (they generally get in 1 of each movie every week) I shouldn't have a problem getting what I need...but good god their prices are awful.

Yeah, FYE is expensive...however...on some movies they surprise with decent sale prices. I found a couple there for 22.99 when Best Buy and others were 24.99 or 29.99.

So I was this close to becoming format neutral last night... I stumbled across BB's demo Samsung BDP1000 for $450 CDN. After taxes and a 2 year warranty (I don't normally bother with these but since it's a demo I thought it might be a good idea) the total would be $550 CDN.

I did a little homework online and decided to sleep on it.

So while I'd LOVE to be able to watch Pirates in HD next week, I think I'll wait a little longer for a better price and better functioning player.

At least in my personal opinion I think it makes no sense to buy a Blu-Ray standalone player regardless of it's price when the PS3 is still an option. Thats not to say that wasn't an amazing deal....especially CDN because I'm pretty sure that translates to like $5.32 american. But still, you're going to want a PS3 sooner or later, you're going to want a Blu-Ray player sooner or later, it just makes more sense to kill 2 birds with 1 $500 stone.

The PS3 about a $750 CDN stone after tax at most places. :( And that's sans game and a 2nd controller. :(

Wow that blows. No wonder your on the fence about a Wii that thing must cost $350 in Canada. Oh well my advise is still to wait for a PS3 it just makes more sense. Wait for a price drop or a decent deal or something. If you're willing to spend $300 on a blu-ray player, and $300 on a videogame system then just wait for a $150 price drop. OR if you wanna get fancy if you're willing to spend $599 on a videogame system and $1 on a blu-ray player then the same thing applies. Imagine buying a $1 blu-ray player, hard deal to turn down.

Some blockbusters already rent Blu-Ray and HD DVD movies their selections just suck. To give a comparison about how bad my local blockbuster is in terms of Blu-Ray movies...I have 10 times a better selection at my own house then they have on their shelves. Which is just ridiculous for a place like Blockbuster. Netflix gets everything though so you could always use that. I'm entirely too lazy to use netflix though, I don't like the whole mailing thing.

They say it upconverts very nicely.

Has three movies that I would absolutly buy in a heart beat (plus two I can trade).

And Value Electronics should offer us over at AVS a discount on it.

Finally I can sit back and enjoy Pirates, Casino Royal, Spiderman 1-3 (when they come), Die Hard (when they come) etc!

Chugga

To me it makes no sense at all. For $600 you've got 2 options

1. The 2nd gen Panasonic player with 5 free movies that isn't actually future proof what-so-ever and offers no true benefits over any of the other players out right now.

2. The PS3 which has no free movies but comes with a free next gen videogame system if you wanna look at it that way. It's patches are generally ahead of the curve and are always looking out for the best interest of the system as a Blu-Ray player.

To me it's a simple choice. But I'm also a gamer, I NEED a PS3 or else I won't be able to play the awesomeness that is Heavenly Sword, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, or God of War. I'll get a standalone Blu-Ray player one of these days but thats after all the kinks are worked out. Right now the only true option with kinks worked out is the PS3. It's also the safest bet because the absolute worst case scenario in all of this is you get stuck with an awesome videogame machine.

HollandX

The PS3 which has no free movies

http://ase.tufts.edu/filmseries/detail_pages_images/Talladega-Nights-Poster.jpeg

It's patches are generally ahead of the curve and are always looking out for the best interest of the system as a Blu-Ray player.

Unfortunately, the PS3's hardware HDMI 1.3 port is only running at 1.2 right now.

When the PS3 hit the street it was recognized as one of the most full featured Blu-ray players to date, but it seem now that PS3 owners aren't getting everything they thought they were. It has recently been uncovered that although the PS3 does have an HDMI 1.3 port, it does not support bit stream audio. What this means for Blu-ray fans is that when they finally pick up one of those new Onkyo receivers with HDMI 1.3, that they still can't enjoy DTS HD because there is no way to get the bits out of the PS3. Of course the DTS track can still be down mixed and PCM audio is supported, but so much for being the most capable Blu-ray player available.

** Dolby TrueHD can still be decoded inside the PS3 and sent as uncompressed audio to the AV receiver, but if the AV receiver has an integrated decoder it can't be used instead of the PS3's decoder. **

http://www.a.engadgethd.com/2007/05/08/no-dolby-truehd-or-dts-hd-for-ps3-owners/

Having said all that (which Chugga already knows), he's completely right. No reason to purchase a standalone BD player right now unless you are loaded.

PrimeBane
05-15-2007, 11:55 PM
Talladega Nights was only with the first 500,000 or so North American units... the first 500,000 in Europe got Casino Royale.

Now, you don't get jack squat for BD movies with it.

And as with the PS3, the 2nd and 3rd gen BD players will have upgradable firmware so BD-J shouldn't be a huge problem... of course they could have just avoided the problem and used HDi instead and BD owners wouldn't have to worry about missing next gen content.

Personally, if I can get a BD player for $400ish CDN I'll be all over it. Then I can take that $300 I saved not buying a PS3 and sink it into movies. :D

I pre-ordered Matrix Trilogy (the $70 one) from amazon, and am wavering on POTC & POTC:DMC. The second one, while visually entertaining, was a big letdown for me compared to the first. I definitely want the first one, but will probably wait until I see POTC:AWE to pick that one up, if I like the new one.

Anyone picking up Flags of our Fathers and/or Letters from Iwo Jima? If so, of those who have both formats, are you going for one over the other, or do any of you plan to buy one on BR and another on HD-DVD?

I really liked Flags, but it was sad to me. Wonderful story and acting...directing, as well. Didn't catch Letters in the theater, but if it's as half as good as Flags, then that's a definite blind buy for Timmy. I am sure both will be stunning in high def.

I picked up a used T2 on BR for $13.99 last night...the little security strips were still on the box...I think the previous owner watched it once and brought it back to get store cred or something. The disc is flawless. Also picked up Last Samurai for $19.99 new, as well. Samurai wasn't a steal per se, but I did save $6 on T2.

In unrelated news I found a copy of Ultimate Avengers today...and yes I bought it. A measley $4 after the gift card was applied. If you ask me...quite the deal. And they are lying when they say the movies are awful, any movie featuring Hulk smashing ANYTHING is good in my book....yes even Universals 2003 effort was cool in my book.

By the way not sure who said The Fountain was the best movie of the year last year but I gotta disagree. I watched it last night and I won't even comment on audio/video quality, hell I'll even go as far as to say it was a pretty good movie, it wasn't bad at all....BUT the movie itself was by far and away one of the worst cases of false advertisement I've ever seen. In the previews Hugh Jackman is some bad@$$ time traveling crusader looking for the fountain of youth...in the movie itself Hugh Jackman is an idiot who can't go 5 seconds without crying.

Once you take the movie for what it's worth it's actually pretty good. But do yourself a favor and don't watch the trailer for the movie before you see it. You'll be wondering when the bad@$$ery comes and when all the magic and mystery comes.....it never comes.

I thought Jackman was great in the movie and any breakdowns he had in the movie were certainly worthy of the situation(s) at hand

by the way I rented both Pans and The Fountain last night (sd) and watched them back to back for the first time

both certainly good movies but ones I'm glad I didn't buy blind

Yeah I've personally never seen or known anyone to say they liked the 2nd movie more then the first. I personally still haven't seen the 2nd one yet but I LOVED the first movie. All of my friends have seen the 2nd and everytime I tell them "yeah I'll finally get around to seeing it the 22nd" all I ever hear is how much the 2nd one sucked, how it sucked so bad it borderline ruined the first movie.

As for me I'm going into it with an open mind, it can't be that bad. But I suppose which one you like more has a bit to do with what order you watch the movies in or how much you liked the first movie to begin with. Everyone that I've heard that actually enjoyed the first movie automatically hates the 2nd.

I still haven't seen Pans Labyrinth but thats exactly what I'd expect to go in seeing...after watching the trailers I'm expecting some sort of creepy Alice in Wonderland.

Usually after watching a movie where I end up saying w-t-f thats not what I paid for what-so-ever I go and see the trailer just in case....and in the past year I feel like I've been lied to twice. Babel and the Fountain both had amazing trailers and while I won't discredit the merits of the movies, you don't get what the trailer is advertising what-so-ever....or if you do get it you get it in tiny doses.

It was like the trailers for the 2003 Hulk movie where every single scene in the trailer is Hulk smashing crap then you go to the movie and an hour in Banner still hasn't even turned into the Hulk yet.

The second POTC isn't THAT bad. The first obviously set a high bar, and the second didn't live up to that standard. It still is a good, fun, movie and opens up to some new characters. The Flying Dutchmen's crew isn't as cool as the Black Pearl crew was in the first one though.

Short Story -

This past weekend I literally "wet" myself while shopping with my wife. We live about 30 minutes north of Palm Beach Gardens (ritzy, lotsa of money, Trump, etc). The Gardens has an incredible mall complete with stores like Rolex, Movado, Steve Madden Shoes, etc...stores you don't find in every mall. My wife wanted to go look at some things at one particular clothing store...so I agreed to drive down with her on the agreement that we were gonna see Spidey 3 when we got back. We're done shopping and on our way out...my wife is like "honey...what's wrong".....I was standing still....with my mouth literally open just staring at the "Sony Store". In their window they had the clearest TV picture I had ever personally witnessed and it was Spidey 2 that was playing. My wife was like...you wanna go in? I didn't even answer.....just ran in like a kid would at a candy store. I sat down in front of this 60something inch 1080p HDTV that was playing Planet Earth in it's own separate room with surround sound, etc and I was just encaptured by it. My wife walked up to me and said..."honey...seriously...close your mouth". To which I realized...my face had been frozen with the "HOLY SH**....that is the coolest thing I've ever seen" pose for the last 3 minutes. Unfortunately though...I had to leave without the $6,000 TV :(

I've yet to see Babel but most people consider it the lesser of Iñårritu's work.
I think his debut "Amores Perros" is brilliant (you can catch it on IFC every so often) and "21 Grams" is a compelling watch.
Both however also follow the structure of different stories/lives connected by a common thread/event.

Yep. It was that segment...but a little after they showed their hunting habits. It was when the Impala they (the dogs being filmed) were chasing launched into the water and got away....but the other part of the pack (the ones they didn't follow) brought one down. I used to always go to that mall when I was a kid. My grandparents lived down there, so that's the mall we always went to shop at. For a kid, it's the most boring mall on the planet. :p

However, it will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the place I got my first ever hockey video game. NHL Hockey (1991) by EA Sports for the PC (and a Gravis Pad ;)) I've been hooked on hockey ever since (to say the least).

Yeah I read that, call me crazy but I cannot for the life of me figure out how they plan on releasing 240 movies in December. Not only does that seem physically impossible but when it comes to movies December is a down month. The first 2 weeks are cool but the last 2 weeks all the movie makers figure everyones already done their christmas shopping and don't release crap.

The only way I could see this being true was if they were counting every single region and country as it's own DVD. Say King Kong collectors edition came out in the US, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Australia, Italy, France, England, India, Germany, etc. Thats 10 movies right there. That makes sense....I could definately see a late push and have them get 240 out. But 240 legit no duplicate movies....thats just crazy. Not only crazy but I'd hate to see Blu-Ray do that....I like every week I only have to go out and buy 1 or 2 movies that I like. Next week I actually hate because I see 5 movies that I actually like and to me thats too many. Imagine walking into best buy and seeing 80 new movies on the shelves. Thats crazy.

I think I am pretty set on making the Panasonic my first BD player...its supposed to hit Best Buy here at the end of the month or begining of June. The $599 price tag along with the the five free movies (I really want 3 of them...will trade the other two out)...makes it a done deal!

Enjoy but I would still get the PS3 no worries with it being future proof.. But the 5 free movies is tough to pass up.

Or wait and see what the Samsung Dual Player price tag is so you can enjoy both.

The only thing about the PS3 is that it is Blue Tooth. I just bought a harmony remote to eliminate ALL my other remotes..so having to add one for the PS3 kind of upsets me

800 HD DVD titles coming this year??

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=849308

Article breaks down the releases as follows:

20 May
29 June
73 July
57 August
77 September
115 October
185 November
240 December

This can not be right.

540 movies released from 10/1 - 12/31? As much as I'd like to see 800 HD-DVD titles in the rest of 2007, I don't think that's accurate at all. Hope it is, though! While I love my PS3 w/Blu-Ray, I secretly have wanted HD-DVD to win the format war. Especially since HD-DVD seems to be the next-gen DVD underdog.

I remember Pirates 2 being a letdown from the original. Even though I have an amazon gift certificate, I feel like I'd be wasting my free money if I order it on BR. Does anyone agree? I feel like I should have it for the trilogy's sake, but no one knows if POTC3 is going to be any good. I don't like the 3rd Matrix movie, but I still have it for completeness purposes.

i personally loved Dead Man's Chest...so to each his own, obviously...but apparently it's supposed to be THE next gen movie on either format so far, surpassing all others in picture quality.

I have Batman. Which of the others are worth picking up?

It's just my taste, but I'd pick up Swordfish, Costantine, Goodfellas and the Last Samurai.

As for the 800 HD DVDs, it is possible. Universal has probably the largest list of catalogue titles of any studio... sadly, it just mean there could be a lot of crap coming out.

dayday6
05-20-2007, 12:05 PM
That number has to be a running total of movies released. Like Chugga said it would be bad business for them to dump all their movies in December.

Also where is all this shelf space????

It's definately "possible" but heres my major problem with this idea. The reason borderline titles sell so well now (if you can even call it "so well") is because there simply isn't alot of choice out there. You put a movie like "Catch & Release" against 50 other titles and it doesn't even budge....you make it one of only 3 movies coming out that week and people fiending for a new movie gotta give it a shot.

If Universal blew the vast majority of it's wad in one month it would be shooting itself in the foot bigger then any company ever could. You gotta look at it this way, a "blockbuster" high definition hit is lucky to sell 100,000 copies. A run of the mill high def release is ridiculously lucky to break 10,000.....more then anything it will likely stick in the 3-7 thousand area. 240 movies in 1 month....like I said, alot of those movies would be made and would possibly at the very best sell 50 copies worldwide.....FIFTY.

For every copy of Man on Fire that may move during the month of December there would be 5 movies that were created that wouldn't move at all completely negating any money that was made on Man on Fire. Remember this isn't DVD, the tech isn't paper cheap just yet, when you make a high def movie right now it's going to cost you and you gotta hope and pray you get that money back. And those are just the bad movies weighing the good movies down. Don't forget the good movies would weigh the good movies down also. 60 movies come out in 1 week and chances are you like at least 7 of them...but you can only really afford 3-4. Those movies don't move either.

Its just not Universal there are other HD DVD producers out there besides Universal.

Also DVD did it with I think 248 titles in Dec way back when not sure how cheap it was for them at first to do it compared now to HD DVD.

I still dont think it will happen but who know with this HD race. Could we see a studio jumps sides?? One never know.

Regardless of who is producing these 240 movies they are all equally shooting themselves in the foot. It could be 1 studio or 50 of them. They are still hurting each other in the end. Why do you think movies randomly started disappearing from the May 22nd release date? When Pirates was announced stuff started moving around because they know people right now are really only in a position to buy 1 to 2 movies a week. Pirates 1&2 get announced and all of a sudden movies start getting "pushed back". The market is entirely too small right now for this to work. Unless HD DVD knows something we don't and the market will be entirely changed within 7 months then who knows.

Movies are getting pushed back because of the Oct deadline for Blu Ray... Would be I think the biggest reason right now.

What is the Oct BD deadline?

grif32
05-20-2007, 05:11 PM
What is the Oct BD deadline?

The whole BD+ or BD-J 1.1 whatever it is. Every player needs 1.1 in order to be compliant. That way they can have PIP, all the extra's. Similar to what HD-DVD has HDI Etc... Any player today besides the PS3 wont be able to play all the extra's after Oct...

For some it doesnt matter but I think for the average consumer is matters to them.

What if the price of the product changes before it becomes available?

The first Pirates is a blast - A definate blind buy, IMO. The second, on the other hand, is like eating pure cane sugar - all style, absolutely no substance, it really lacks the charm of the first film.

That said, I'll be buying both once I finally get a Blu-Ray player, simply for the outstanding PQ and lossless audio.

Natalie Portman Stripper scene in HD......noiiicce

Closer was definately something I was thinking about getting today. Hell there were alot of movies I was thinking about getting today. Apocalypto looked cool but it was a Mel Gibson movie and I'm not huge on those. Closer has high def Natalie Portman stripping and thats gotta be pretty awesome. Freedom Writers....I'll watch that once it hits Lifetime television for the depressed. Both Mission Impossibles were bleh...or blah, whatever you wanna call them.

So I settled for both of the Pirates movies, Flags of our Fathers, and Letters from Iwo Jima. I must tell you though, high def Natalie Portman stripping ALMOST swayed me...but Walmart didn't have it so oh well.

oaktown2000
05-22-2007, 02:33 PM
I would have passed on flags of our fathers. It's a drama....when it was packaged in the previews as an action. I didn't really care too much for it. Decent story...but the pace of the movie about put me to sleep.

And wifey was gonna stop by blockbuster and grab me Apocalypto. So I'll let you know how it was on LIVE sometime.

Now they have a whole section for Toshiba setup. With the Toshiba Rezga(sp?) and the A2. Pretty sweet set-up..

just got this email from Circuit City

Dear James ,

Due to a malfunction in our computer systems, some customers
were recently able to order the Complete Matrix Trilogy HD-DVD
gift set from our website for $19.99 rather than the correct
price of $79.99. In addition, some customers were able to order
the O.C.: The Complete Fourth Season 5-pc DVD for $9.99 rather
than the correct price of $39.99.

Because of this pricing error many customers chose to place
multiple orders for each of these items. We are allowing each
customer who placed an order at the erroneous price to purchase
one box set of each movie at the lower price, and we are
cancelling all multiple orders as permitted by our Terms of Use.
(Please see circuitcity.com - "Terms of Use” - Errors on Our
Website.)

Please note that you may at any time return to circuitcity.com
and place another order for additional copies of either item at
the corrected price.

In most cases, your credit card will have been charged for the
entire amount you intended to purchase. In this event, Circuit
City will issue a refund within 2-3 business days for any
amounts related to the cancelled multiple orders. Please
understand, however, that some financial institutions may take
5-7 business days to process the refund to your credit card
account.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience, and we hope you will continue
to shop with us.

Awesome deals going on for HD DVD players. Posted on the avsforum:

Looks like Amazon is jumping on board with the HD DVD deals too (much like Circuit City and Best Buy did this week):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.ht..._rd_i=193642011

Buy a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player by June 16, and you can get up to seven free HD DVDs. Here's how this works: You'll receive two free HD DVDs from Amazon.com when you buy the HD-A2 and either The Ultimate Matrix Collection or The Complete Matrix Trilogy. There's also a rebate offer on the HD-A2 that lets you get five more HD DVDs from Toshiba. To top this deal off, the HD-A2 is now at our lowest price ever--less than $300.

Step 1: Add the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player to your Shopping Cart along with either The Ultimate Matrix Collection or The Complete Matrix Trilogy on HD DVD. Then choose two HD DVDs from the list below and add both items to your cart and proceed to checkout. The price of the two HD DVDs you choose will be deducted from your order at checkout. (Applies only to products sold by Amazon.com. Does not apply to products sold on our site by third-party merchants or through third-party areas such as Amazon.com Marketplace, Auctions, or zShops.)

Step 2: You can also get an additional five free HD DVDs from Toshiba after mail-in rebate. Download and print out the rebate form available on the detail page for the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player. Choose your five free HD DVDs from the 15 shown on the rebate form and follow the instructions on that form for mailing it to Toshiba after your purchase. Toshiba will send you the five free HD DVDs by mail.

That's a great HD DVD player, the Matrix trilogy, and 7 other HD DVDs for $361 shipped. Sweet!

For those of you who own both Blu ray and HD DVD players, which version do you buy if the movie comes out in both versions? Is HD DVD better in PQ and Sound?

Thanks

PQ should be the same. I grab HD because of the combo disk. That why I can let people watch it.

That's a matter of taste and opinion... I'm quite happy with the releases on HD DVD. :)

IMO the only major releases BD currently has are POTC 1&2 and Casino Royale the format any sort of advantage.

Good lord I hope this is a joke. HD has a ton of great movies out just like Blu-Ray does.

Please go buy a PS3 and enjoy Blu Ray movies. Thats whats its all about. But to say where are the good HD movies is a little crazy..

You will love the PS3 puts out a beautiful pic. To bad it doesnt upscale tho.

HD DVD Group Responds to Erroneous Report of 2007 Release Count

Thu May 24, 2007 at 02:42 PM ET
http://www.highdefdigest.com/images/post/2/2634/original.pjpeg

Tongues have been wagging since late last week over a published report that the HD DVD camp was planning to release nearly 800 high-def titles between now and the end of the year, but it turns out that number was wrong.

First published in the trade publication Home Media Magazine, the erroneous report (http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hom052007/index.php?startpage=34) listed a month-by-month breakdown of title counts from May of this year through December that seemed to increase exponentially by the month, with a total of 500 titles planned for the fourth quarter of this year alone.

Contacted for comment, the HD DVD Promotional Group told us that the Home Media Magazine report was incorrect. The group says it "conservatively" projects a worldwide total of 600 HD DVD releases for the entirety of 2007, and that the error in the report appeared to stem from a slide in an HD DVD powerpoint presentation that listed the cumulative number of titles by month for 2006.

The Home Media Magazine report also quoted a Blu-ray spokesperson as saying that Blu-ray-affiliated studios will release a total of 43 titles in 2007. This number also appears to be incorrect, given that 160 titles have already been announced through September in the U.S. alone.

The HD DVD Promotional Group told us it was seeking a published correction to the article.

Is that from a stand alone player...or the PS3?

There shouldn't really be a picture quality difference between a standalone or the PS3 as long as he's got it hooked up through the optimal connections. But with that being said I can vouch that not only do those shots look impressive they weren't even the most flattering photos in the movie.

Some of the scenes where they are on the tropical island are just jaw dropping and when the cracken is trying to overtake either of the ships you'll crap your pants, die, and then think you went to heaven.

Their usage of CG is just flat out amazing. It makes Superman Returns look like it was done by a group of 5th graders.

For Blu-Ray'ers....FYI has a Buy 2, Get 1 Free deal....and some of the movies they have are on sale for only 24.99.....the lady at the one i was just at was very cool and allowed me to do the deal for any movies I wanted, not just the ones they had it marked down for, so I was still limited to their selection but got Mi:2, The Fountain and Donnie Brasco for like 50 bucks.

Add the 40-year-old virgin for 10 bucks (after best buy rewards), the Matrix trilogy, both Pirates movies and dog day afteroon, and I have a busy weekend ahead of me :)

So just out of curiosity...does anyone have the Samsung BD-P1000? I might have the oppurtunity to buy one from Best Buy for $500 (retail price) but recieve a $200 giftcard while doing it.

Is it a reliable player? Does it upconvert well? I am looking for all opinions here.

From what I understand (I nearly bought one last week) it does a nice job of movies, but it's not full BD-J compliant.

And no, it doesn't upconvert well from what I've read.

I don't supposed they'll let you use the gift card on the purchase eh? :D

Would you not get the $200 giftcard if you bought a PS3? Because for an extra $100 it surely makes a hell of alot more sense.

While it won't be an easy pill to swallow I've got bigger fish to fry when it comes to Denzel Washington releases. Man on Fire, Glory, Ricochet, Remember the Titans, etc. I need to get those first. Not to mention I still haven't found Courage Under Fire ANYWHERE yet. And who knows with a little luck and a bit of praying by time that movie is actually ready to finally be released in high def I might just be able to get it on Blu-Ray. It's wishful thinking but that never hurt anybody.

RE: Matrix HD-DVD's from CircuitCity.com for $20

I just talked to a Circuit City supervisor on the phone and she said they ARE allowing people's orders who ordered 1 of these sets to go through for the $19.99 price. Unfortunately right now they are all sold out of their initial shipments. My order right now is in "pending" status and she said that was fine and it WILL process once they get more in.

I bought it on blu-ray when it came out. Ok heres the thing....it's got good picture, good sound. It's not lacking in the hd department. The main problem I had with the movie was what I had said earlier in this thread I just thought the trailer and the movie didn't match up what-so-ever. I felt like there was more then a little bit of false advertising going on.

With that being said it's not a bad movie....I actually liked it, just don't go into the movie thinking you are going to get this time traveling life defying movie about how a man will fight through thousands of years just to save the love of his life. That is NOT the fountain. It's a sci-fi love story....just sci-fi enough to keep it out of the chick-flick category.

Well, FYE at another location was nice enough to do a return on The Fountain...and while it wasn't my intention, I basically ended up getting Donnie Brasco and MI:2 for $12.50 each.

Also, I just got an e-mail from Circuit City that my Matrix trilogy is on its way...i was going to ebay it, but if anyone here is interested in trading a few used movies for it, I'd be happy to do that, also.

yeah, the selections are incredibly weak, plus i still don't trust that I'll get a clean copy (even though they'll accept returns) but it's nice to see another place that carries them.
