Did you guys really think Transformers wouldn't be worth the upgrade to lossless audio? hahaha

Yes... and I'll continue to doubt until I rent the BD and test it myself (best audio remember? Beating out several lossless tracks).

The current DD+ is pretty damn lively and clear. :)

Some of the Blockbuster programs (There are like 7) allow you to exchange mail rentals for in-store movies. Usually it isn't to swap a bad disc for a good one, but to actually get a different movie.

I see no reason why you couldn't swap your bad one for a good one at the stroe, but it would count as a swap, which are limited on some of those 7 accounts.

As a side note, I discovered something interesting awhile ago. Apparnetly studios lease movies to Blockbuster now, the store doesn't have to buy all 200 copies you see of a new release.

For example, I was in there one day and they had about 150 copies of Juno sitting there. I asked to buy one and he said they couldn't sell it since they were sending them back to the studio. He said for big releases the studio sends them copies and then Blockbuster just pays a royalty on the rentals. After a certain period, they send them back.

The real kicker is they just destroy them!!! He was cutting each DVD to the center, so it wouldn't play. The studio just gets them, counts them to make sure they go all the copies, and trashes them. A total waste and I assume rather costly.

First thing I could think of is how hard that is on the environment. Now I feel good that Blockbuster hasn't got my business for a long time... pretty much ever since I went HD. That's just a terrible thing to do.

I'd like to think there is some sort of recyling process...

But then all those Atari 2600 copies of ET need company right? ;)

I've heard it's hard to do any kind of recycling process for discs because it's not just one material they're made of. They can't just melt them all down and reuse them. No idea on the specifics but that's what I've heard.

The soundtrack to Transformers was mixed really well to engage the surrounds pretty much at all times. This will only be bolstered and improved with a lossless option.

DLP's are the easiest to do. Just open the door and push it right out to the curb.. Get a Plasma TV and the PQ will improve big time. :D

Paramount Offers $10 Rebate for DVD Owners; New Titles Revealed:

Paramount Home Entertainment will soon offer DVD owners $10 via mail-in-rebate when they purchase select Blu-ray titles. These titles include 'Transformers' (Sep 2), 'The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration' (Sep 23), and 'Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street' (Oct 21). Additionally, the rebate applies to the currently unannounced titles 'Old School', 'Stardust', and 'Zodiac'

What about us HD DVD owners :).. I would buy Transformers on BR for $24 then send in my HD DVD for a $10 rebate

Well that's why most of us rely on sites like Bluray.com and HighDefDigest to review these things before we buy them. Some Blu-ray's I'll blind buy and yes I've been disappointed with my last couple of concert Blu's but that's the game we play as enthusiasts. Gremlins and Goonies are classics and being Warner titles if they had TrueHD I'd blind buy them easily. Warner did good on Lost Boys so as long as they keep giving me HD audio I'll trust the video will look good as well.

Well I dont own either on DVD and loved this movies.. So anything is an upgrade over what I have now.

just stay away from Sleepy Hollow on Blu-Ray

Some might say its worth the price to upgrade to Blu-Ray if they don't have the movie but trust me, go get the standard DVD at a bargain bin. Paying a hefty Hi-Def price for a "brighter" and "grainy" version of itself is not worth the extra dollars paid

Alot of options in that range. Pretty much anything will do since you a cheap one to hold you over. What price range are we talking? It's definitely not the bulb. I just changed that in Nov. and the picture comes on for about 30 seconds when I do a hard reboot. I'm going to replace the lamp ballast and see if that does the trick, but since it is firing, I'm not real hopeful. Next step would be replacing the DMD board or possibly the entire light engine which is >> than a new DLP.

Since Sammy's customer service has been so shoddy, I won't be a return buyer. I think I'm in the $500-700 price range for my temporary (i.e. gotta get my Madden fix) phase. My next home will have a decked out theatre room if that's the only concession that my wife makes. :)

sometimes they ship it on release day, sometimes they ship it the day before...at least that's how it's worked for me. So if you have prime you'll probably get it the day after release day...if you do standard 3-5 day you'll probably get it at the end of release week.

It's funny from a fanboy point of view but it hurts HDD's credibility. Honestly it's something they shouldn't have done. The HD DVD audio score should have never been given 5 stars to begin with. DD+ is only 1.5mbps which is the same as DTS. So it's not really HD audio which is the name of the category they rate movies on. We all know it had a great mix but giving it a 5 was wrong.

Why pay for Austin Powers in HD with (hopefully) lossless audio when the DVD's for $4 each are just good enough? Ughhh....I can't think like that. I think you've been spoiled by too many BOGO's and cheap discontinued HD DVD's. :D

Well thats the problem with the average joe. They are thinking of spending $4 instead of $25 on a movie and $400 on a player to get the disc to work.

You are right tho we were spoiled by Bogo's by BR which are gone now.

cool thanks. I wanted to pre order a few blu-rays becuase it's so much cheaper than the stores but I hate waiting. I need Iron Man, Transformers, Sarah Connor , Heroes 2 (just paid for at tower.com because it ships in 12 hours, not a pre-order for some reason)

i hear you about not wanting to wait, but really I found I don't watch the movies until the weekend anyway, so I can stand to wait a few days if it means saving something like 25-30% on the movies.

Bad news for you Sin City fans

"While we're on the subject of Buena Vista, there have been a lot of reports around the Net that the studio is planning to release Sin City on Blu-ray Disc on 10/21. That's a big negatory, folks. We've checked with the studio and have officially learned that the title has been pushed back into 2009, along with Finding Nemo. Just so you know... you know?"

No, I just don't pray at the Blu Ray alter like you do and buy everything the studios throw at me. To each his own. I can't justify spending $25-$30 on a movie that can be had for $4, especially if the "upgrade" is moderate at best (and I also won't pay that for audio alone like you). Ever since BD won the HD war, deals have gone away. I'm afraid that Blu Ray will end up dying off as a format because the prices won't come down to where everyone can get in on it. I spent $93 filling up my tank yesterday, so I don't have the luxury of throwing $100 at 3 movies in high definition just for kicks. I'm much better off than a lot of people in this country but until the studios wake up, this format isn't going to take off beyond the small niche it is in.

Ehh, I'm not convinced they will ever take over with how they've handled things - it seems like they are content to just sit back right now and let people adopt. They aren't pushing for it - I realize the economy sucks, but just about everybody got some free money from the tax rebates and every retail store had some type of specials, I thought we'd see something like the free bluray player with tv purchase again - like we saw around xmas - but nothing..... not even any new advertising at all (at least not that I saw).

They are leaving the door wide open for someone else to come in - dish is now offering movies in 1080p - they are advertising the same quality as a blu-ray so I'm assuming it is that good. I'm sure it doesn't have the lossless audio, but to 99.8% of people, lossless doesn't matter.

When someone can rent the movie and DVR it off of PPV for $5 - they aren't going to spend a few hundred dollars on hardware and then another $30 for the movies. Prices need to come down fast or it'll never take off. Heck, my new DVR from dish can hold 60 hrs. of high-def material - plus I can add an external hard drive if I want. Think of how much they'll be able to hold in a few more years..... It still boggles my mind that Sony/BDA has sat back and done nothing after hd dvd died.

The rebate checks went to paying off bills, paying for the increase in gas. Those payments did NOTHING but put money into oil companies pockets.

This is the slow time of the year for movie buyers. Why push it now? This xmas I think you will really see a push for BR players into homes. If not then I agree they will be introuble.

I agree they really need to do something. If you ask the BR nut jobs (sbrooks) :D they will say how well BR is selling. But just think if they lowered prices how much better they would sell.

I think they are doing nothing because they lost a ton of money with all the bogo's and other deals they did because of HD DVD so now they are trying to collect some of it back. IMO.

I have not bought a single BR in a long time. Netflix for me and it has saved me a ton of money. Just one customer they have lost because of the crazy prices.

I agree that now isn't really a great time to push it - but when tax season was around and the rebate checks were going out, it wouldn't have been a bad idea. Sure, a lot of people probably used that money to pay off bills, etc. - but there was also probably a good chunk that just blew the money.

Your probably right about them doing nothing because of all the money they've already lost on it - but I REALLY hope they do make a strong push this x-mas, otherwise I don't think bluray will last.

Unless you really liked this film in the theater, pass on it. The PQ just isn't there... and I personally found it to be boring.

You know what, I blind bought it on DVD, and still have not watched it.

I have a 42" 1080p. Not sure what you want to know. I will say this... there are 3 things I love. My dogs, my wife, and my Panasonic. ;)

Very good picture from satellite TV/cable. Stunningly gorgeous picture from a 1080p source.

Yeah, I have a 42" 1080p as well, for about 3 months now, and I gotta say, it is awesome. I can't remember the model number, but it's the 80pzu I think. Gorgeous picture all around. Blu Rays look stunning, as do PS3 games. Even standard cable channels look pretty good. It has a Dynamic Contrast Ratio of 1,000,000:1, which helps quite a bit. From my experience and opinion, the Panasonics beat out similar Samsung and Sony models, based on a test viewed using the same equipment. I am extremely happy with it.

heads up all you bargain hunters ....
Heroes season 1 on BD will be only $75 @ Target next week

I hope this rots on the shelves then maybe studios like Universal will realize the absurdity of releasing what is now "catalog" at a premium price. Season 1 looks pretty darn nice on dvd at the $20 it can be had for vs an extra $55 for a few extra pixels.

Indeed. The greed will come back to bite them. No one except an extreme fan of the show would pay that much. Unless a movie is an absolute classic, I still buy em on dvd and save some coin.

Edit: And here's hoping that Toshiba can pull through, cus my Panasonic Deep Color S54 promised some of the same things, and doesn't quite live up to it.

I gave American Gangster about a 7/10 the first time I saw it in the theater...but I liked it more the second time on HD DVD and now consider it a solid 8.

I still think Crowe's performance was meh and the climax outside the church was weak, but i enjoyed the character development and the scenery, overall making for a very rewatchable movie in my opinion.

The HD DVD looked OK, but not great...not to the fault of the transfer, though, I think it's just how the movie was shot...i would expect a similar if not identical look on the blu.

I don't have mine mounted yet (it sits on our bar) but I don't think it's too hard. Freezerfuel has done it all and can enlighten you more on the subject. I may be ceiling mounting mine soon as the bar is probably coming out... I plan on buying plastic conduit for the HDMI cable (I'm lucky enough that the previous owner of the house put an outlet in the ceiling.)

Hanging the screen depends on what kind you buy... I have a pull down and I just used a couple of those hercules hooks. They work pretty damn good. :)

You have a good point, renting obviously saves money.

What I do is rent the new releases I'm lukewarm about on DVD, and I buy the blu-rays that look good or that I know I want.

Like The Ruins, Shutter, etc.. were all recent Netflix rentals. Occassionally I'll like the rental enough to go buy it, and then it costs extra, but usually by that time I can find a deal on the blu-ray.

I'm far from an expert but here are a few things.

The cheap Monoprice mounts are junk, stay away. Certain things Monoprice is good for, this is not one of them. I think the second mount I bought was a Mustang and it was really good. Never had to make any adjustments later.

I ran a 15 foot HDMI cable and extension chord through the ceiling and then down through a closet and then to receiver and power outlet. Extremely easy, especially if you have a drop down ceiling.

I had a fixed type mounted screen, pretty easy. The frustrating part is tucking the cloth in around the frame of screen and then one side comes loose while working on the other. Would be easier with 2 people.

Knock on wood that you havent. It sucks getting 1/2 through a movie and have it freeze. Tried restarting and same thing at the same spot.

Yeah would be nice if people would take care of disc better but they do not.

Sorry to hear about that...I've mentioned it before many a times about renting dvds.

The only suggestion I have that seems to avoid that problem is renting the movie THAT day of release (or Tuesday). The disc is brand-new and free of any scratches or repeated viewings.

This is the only way I will even allow myself to invest into an evening of rented entertainment.

Promoting lossless audio is something I think movie studios and retail stores have completely failed to educate consumers about. People pretty much know what HD video looks like right now and it's not going to change much. But when it comes to audio they don't have a clue how great movies can sound. I still tell everyone who owns a PS3 to buy the Sony 720 receiver to truly appreciate how easy and inexpensive it is to upgrade to lossless audio.

I still tell everyone who owns a PS3 to buy the Sony 720 receiver to truly appreciate how easy and inexpensive it is to upgrade to lossless audio.

Only problem is trying to educate the average joe about lossless is like convincing you to go out and by HD DVD. Just not going to happen.

You have to look at it this way. If the average Joe wants to enjoy HD movies with Lossless sound they will need to drop some coin on:

Blu Ray Player -
Reciever -
Speakers -
Cables (which 99% probably know nothing about monoprice) and will pay $100 per hdmi cable

Figure out how to hook everything up. How to get the best sound. etc....

Do firmware updates

Average joe will look at that and say "Hell with that DVD is just fine for me"

I also disagree that MOST people know what HD looks like. I have been over to many peoples homes and THOUGHT they were watching hd with composite cables...

Its a huge upward battle for BR and not looking good at the moment.

And a lot of people have just got into 5.1 sound... at this point and for the foreseeable future, lossless sound with remain niche with the HT crowd.

Disney to Debut Two Versions of 'Prince Caspian' on Blu-ray

Walt Disney has announced it is bringing two versions of 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' to Blu-ray in early December, including a "DisneyFile" edition with Digital Copy.

Set for release in standard two-disc and 'DisneyFile' editions, each will feature an identical presentation of two BD-50 dual-layer discs with matching tech specs and supplements. The 'DisneyFile Edition' will also contain a bonus third standard-DVD disc with a Digital Copy of the film.

In a break from the industry-standard practice of including Digital Copy at no extra cost to the consumer, Disney will retail the standard two-disc edition of 'Prince Caspian' for $34.95, and the 'DisneyFile Edition' for $39.98 (an increase of $5).

1.) lol at "DisneyFile." Disney can't ever do a format. They have to call it Disney. "Now on Disney DVD!" Oh. I don't have a player for those. Sux. I wanted Aladdin.

2.) Amazon.com is carrying the two versions at $24.95 and $27.95, so a $3 difference vs the MSRP $5. I find it unacceptable to pay more for a digital copy. UNACCEPTABLE. Not because it's not worth the few dollars more, but the freakin principle!

As an FYI, the first BD Narnia carried an MSRP of $34.98 and did not include a digital copy of the film. (It now sells on Amazon for $22.95.)

I've had a handful of BD problems with Netflix too. 3 discs have arrived to me cracked, 1 arrived to me on SD DVD for some reason, I also just had to report one as a no-show. Still, I'd rather rent than buy at those ridiculous prices any day and twice on Sunday. Not one BOGO since they officially beat HD-DVD, WTH???!!! It'll be a cold day in hell when I pay $25 for a movie, I don't care how great the movie is.

I don't rent movies but don't buy them either. I can't justify spending that much money for a movie anymore so I can wait a long time before picking them up.

$25 is really a lot for a movie. The only way I've justified spending that much is if it happens to be something special in terms of the package.

Probably why I haven't splurged either on a huge catalog at this point. I've been very patient and conservative when it comes to a purchase, much less re-buying films I already own.

Example...Predator...I have 2 versions of that movie on DVD and noticed the blu-ray version retails for $34.99 at Target. **** that. Same with Point Break. I'll wait it out when they drop to a more reasonable $15-20.

I'll download some software off the Internet that allows me to rip it from the Blu-ray or just download the ripped Blu-Ray torrent before I pay $3 - $5 extra for a second version of the movie I ALREADY BOUGHT!!! That is correct. I will STEAL a copy before I pay more to have another copy of something I paid for.

I'm so tired of movie and music companies trying to rip people off left and right. If I already own something, it should be my right to do whatever I want with it, outside of illegally selling it. If I want to make multiple copies to watch around my house or in my car, then I should be able to do that.

Watched Street Kings and Vacancy last night.

Street Kings was actually better then i anticipated. Sorta like "Training Day"...but not as gritty.

Vacancy was kinda "meh". Not really scary....nor shocking....nor surprising.

I don't really mind paying $25 for a movie.

Consider this - if you have a great home theater setup you can get almost the same visual/audio experience as you can in a theater.

So, seeing a movie in the theater these days, including gas, etc... costs at least that much. Not to mention you get zero replay value out of a theater movie.

I try to look at it like that. Sure I'd spend even less when renting, but I enjoy the collecting and actually do replay my collection quite a bit while doing other things (cooking, playing with kids, etc...).

I'm of the same mind as Jaylis... $25 isn't bad for what you get.

It's the over $30 that stores in Canada want for a new BD that I refuse to pay (unless it's a super special edition title).

And any catalogue stuff will hit a bogo at some point... and that bogo could kill me the way my wants list is piling up. :(

I'm starting to think we won't even see a BOGO on Black Friday this year. They'll throw out a B2G1 with 200 titles or so, some will be decent and fairly new, and people will bite.

If anything, the blu-ray deals will be on the hardware, again to try to lure in more of the mainstream DVD crowd....get 'em in bits and pieces.

I hold out a little hope... we did have a Sony bogo at HMV in Canada earlier in the year. :)

Hardware deals would be nice as well... although I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a $299 Spiderman BD bundle when I had the chance. :( A sub $200 BD profile 2.0 player would help make the pain go away.

Sure I'd spend even less when renting, but I enjoy the collecting and actually do replay my collection quite a bit while doing other things (cooking, playing with kids, etc...).

I enjoyed amassing a nice collection too on regular DVD, I blind-bought a ton of stuff every Tuesday and, I would say, 90% of those movies were watched ONE TIME! There was only a handful that would get replay - stuff I liked to have on in the background or stuff the kids would want to watch when they were over and they would watch the same movies over and over again. Now I refuse to watch any of them because they're not HD - all of them collecting dust. The 30 or so BluRay/HD-DVD movies I have were all purchased used from Gamestop or received free from rebates, I haven't paid more than $12 for any of them. I just can't do it again, you know what I mean? I envy your collection - it's really awesome, don't get me wrong, it's very impressive. In addition to 3-at-a-time Netflix I also have the Premium package with DirecTV with all of the movie channels so I do watch a lot there too and all in HD , that costs me near $150 a month so I may actually be spending the same amount as in the past. I'm also finding less and less time to watch stuff during the week too. I've got a long commute and it just wears my old ass out nowadays. I rarely can even stay awake to watch a movie on a weeknight anymore.
