Not to mention you get zero replay value out of a theater movie.

I try to look at it like that. Sure I'd spend even less when renting, but I enjoy the collecting and actually do replay my collection quite a bit

That's the key requirement for me right there...the replay value on a movie. $25 for a movie to me is steep if it's just going to gather dust and sit there on the shelf. It has to have repeat potential for me to invest that much (keeping in mind that this applies to several which can add up over time).

I hold out a little hope... we did have a Sony bogo at HMV in Canada earlier in the year. :)

Hardware deals would be nice as well... although I'm still kicking myself for not picking up a $299 Spiderman BD bundle when I had the chance. :( A sub $200 BD profile 2.0 player would help make the pain go away.

i currently have about $430 in Best Buy store credit...if a $200 BD player came out I'd definitely get a second player for the bedroom.

Wouldn't it be to add a little more and get a PS3?

I'm of the same mind as Jaylis... $25 isn't bad for what you get.

It's the over $30 that stores in Canada want for a new BD that I refuse to pay (unless it's a super special edition title).

And any catalogue stuff will hit a bogo at some point... and that bogo could kill me the way my wants list is piling up. :(

I got 300 dirt cheap a couple of months back. Under $20 up here was great.

I hard a hard time finding Dark City too, it didn't show up for a few days and when it did my Best Buy got in like 2 copies. As of yesterday we didn't have it anymore. I had the same problem with a few movies that week.

Also I watched Street Kings tonight.....ehhh, not impressed. It was a decent movie but it was ridiculously predictable. If you polled the crowd 5 minutes into the movie and asked "ok who do you think is good and who do you think is bad" I'm pretty sure 99% of the people would know. I've seen Street Kings before and I saw it when it was a million times better when it was named Training Day. Sorry Forrest but Denzel you are not.

Paramount is working to lure fans to their new slate of Blu-ray offerings by dangling a ten dollar carrot before their eyes.

Beginning with the release of the 'Transformers' Blu-ray on September 2nd, the company will roll out a special promotion to customers who replace their Paramount and Dreamworks DVD’s with Blu-ray editions of the same titles. Consumers who mail in promotional certificates from inside the eligible Blu-ray products, along with the proof-of-purchase tabs from both the DVD and Blu-ray versions will receive a $10 rebate for the upgrade.

Other eligible titles will include 'The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration,' 'Sweeney Todd,' 'Old School,' 'Stardust,' and 'Zodiac.'

All of the pertinent details will be included on the inserts included with specially marked packages. Eligible titles must be purchased before December 31, 2009, with all rebate certificates post-marked by January 31, 2010.

Blu-ray Sales Fly Into The Blue

21 August 2008 10:34 AM, PDT

After a rather slow start, sales of Blu-ray high-definition titles are accelerating and are likely to take off exponentially during the holiday season, according to a report by U.K.-based Futuresource. Blu-ray titles will account for about 12 percent of video sales by the end of the year, the research firm said, and will rise t 61 percent by 2012. In a statement Futuresource managing director Jim Bottoms said, "What has impressed me most is the way the retailers are supporting Blu-ray and how much space they are giving over to Blu-ray discs."

Not at all, I thought the transfer was pretty strong actually. But on that same note I also think I've kinda gotten myself into a funk in terms of transfers....I'm no longer "in love" with high def as much as I just view it as the norm now. I haven't watched a SD DVD in well over a year now and I don't even watch SD programming anymore now that dish network added like 100 HD channels.

So really now-a-days I'm more depressed with SD then I am impressed with HD.

I'm probably more prone to say "eww" to see SD then I am to saying "wow" to HD.

So with me Dark City looked like HD, nothing to freak out about but nothing to complain about either.

If you're just talking straight specs, the Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds show is the best for me.

Cars hands down.

30 Days of Nights had some sick AQ as well as ID4.

Over all AQ I think 3:10 to Yuma was amazing..

Watched One Missed Call last night on BR. Not a bad flick. Ending kinda sucked but overall it was decent. AQ was really good in this..

:spawnorb:

Creasy was 100% badass. Those percentages were how I went about rating them....not their actual rating. If I based the best movies on badassness alone, Man on Fire would win followed by Troy (Achilles was absurdly badass in that movie), then 300.

Kingdom of Heaven falls out of those rankings because the 2 coolest guys in the movie die 30 minutes in. (the "viking" who keeps fighting with an arrow through the neck and the black guy that continues to fight after being speared)

Don't think I've seen Kingdom yet but I tend to get that one confused with that Collin Farrell movie which seem to have come out around the same time. I guess I was burned out after watching Gladiator with all of the armies on the battle field scenarios. 300 was not too shabby but it lacked the sharpness in PQ for me. Too much grittiness on the screen although it did have its moments with the snow falling towards the beginning...Final Fantasy seem to be ahead in that arena with foreground background elements.

See, I was one of the ones who hated the grain in 300, but I do have to say on the blu-ray, the incredible detail shines through the intentional grain, almost making the grain bearable. I thought it was quite sharp and definitely vibrant within the limited color scheme of the movie.

Criterion Offers Upgrade Program, Too
Posted August 22, 2008 02:35 PM by Josh Dreuth

The Criterion Collection has revealed that they will offer an upgrade program for those Criterion DVD owners looking to upgrade their current collection to Blu-ray. Simply send in the DVD disc you want upgraded along with a check for $25 ($20 upgrade fee plus $5 shipping) and they'll send you the Blu-ray version of the title (disc only).

The company has pledged to use the current DVD numbering and packaging for Blu-ray releases with the only physical difference being the use of the blue Blu-ray case. That way owners can simply pop the Blu-ray into their existing DVD case and maintain the overall "look" of their collection.

It was also revealed that pricing of Blu-ray titles will be similar to that of the DVDs. Criterion has been mastering their titles in high definition for some time, so there is little additional cost (to them) to put the title out on Blu-ray. This, they say, will help people decide on which version to pick up when they begin releasing new titles day-and-date on both formats.

Screw Criterion....aside from the stupidity and trouble for the exchange itself, why the hell would they think people with blu-ray collections would want blu-rays in DVD cases? Hell the book-version cases on Warner movies are alone what caused me to return Dirty Harry and Natural Born Killers...at least the Close Encounters case is about the same height as a blu-ray case.

What is it with these companies being so insanely out of touch with what people really want?

I never understood why Criterion DVD's were so great. Most of them are artsy films that I don't enjoy anyway and they aren't packaged much differently than a lot of the special edition DVD's anyway. They just came out with a Criterion version of Dazed and Confused. Was that really necessary? Meh.....just not my thing I guess.

HollandX
08-23-2008, 11:57 AM
Because in the beginning of DVDs, they were the only company who put out special features on movies. And when they did features... THEY DID FEATURES.

Also they gave older artsy movies proper releases full of features when the big studios were just focused on blockbusters.

Later in DVD life when everyone did features, they weren't given the rights to many movies anymore. So they focused on smaller and arthouse flicks.

Plus, some of their titles are OOP and are REALLY RARE. Worth a small fortune.

There are a ton of popular flicks in criterion:

The Rock, Chasing Amy, Brazil, Robocop, Armageddon, Seven Samurai, Hard Boiled, The Silence of the Lambs, This Is Spinal Tap, etc...

The only Criterion I've ever owned is Brazil, which is one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time....of course not part of this blu wave at all....but I paid $21 for the single-disc criterion DVD just 6 months ago...there's no way in hell even if it were available I'd give them that back, plus $25, just for a slightly better PQ and AQ version of it.

As I said....screw Criterion.

Pioneer Unveils Ultimate Blu-ray Player

Posted August 23, 2008 01:56 PM by Josh Dreuth

Pioneer has dropped their latest Blu-ray Disc player, and this one promises to be the one that will leave the PlayStation 3 in the dust. For $2200, you can pick up a Pioneer BDP-09FD, which they are promising is not only the best BD-Live Blu-ray Disc player on the market, but also the best DVD and CD player as well, meeting the single machine needs of home theater aficionados.

Besides having the ability to decode all high definition audio codecs, it also features a 16-bit video processor. The case is a combination of aluminum and steel with special vibration reducing feet. Pioneer recommends using the analog outs instead of HDMI for audio - each one has its own separate DAC - but they throw in two HDMI ports just in case you might need them.

Pioneer is also promising jitter-free CD playback and the best DVD upscaling available. So why would anyone spend this much money on a Blu-ray player? Simple. Its the best. And for those looking for the best of CD, DVD, and Blu-ray playback, this is the only option all in one case.

Friend of mine online is having some issues with his PS3. He's using optical and he's not even getting DD 5.1 from Blu-ray's. Here's what he said....

So my problem is that I put in Pirates of the Caribbean and I get no voices. I get all the sound effects and all that crap, but when they speak... nothing. So I decided to play with the audio settings on the PS3 a bit. I can get the voices to come out, but I have to choose "bitstream" as my output on the PS3. Problem is, when I choose bitstream now I lose my surround sound and everything comes out of the front 2 speakers. I have tried changing the audio track in the BR movie itself (from DD5.1 to DD 5.1 uncompressed) but that made little difference.

What's his solution to just get DD 5.1 working from it? I can't remember....

The Bank Job - Is a pretty good movie, actually it's very good. Glad I bought it. More than just an action movie and it's based off a true story. I love heist movies, especially good one's. 8.5/10

10,000 BC - What is this? A Disney-ed up Apocalypto? What a piece of crap. I was expecting more fighting with animals and creatures. 4/10

The Ruins - What a silly movie... I won't say too much to avoid spoilers but man, what a goofy idea for a movie. Still, it was somewhat entertaining. 6/10

The Lost Boys - Still kicks booty after all these years. 9/10

Through the first 45 minutes or so I did think Whitaker was trying to do a Denzel impersonation, but by the end he comes into his own and you see him as the character he's playing.

Universal Planning Dual 'Hellboy II' Blu-ray Sets
Mon Aug 25, 2008 at 09:00 AM ET

In an early alert to the trades, Universal has announced plans to bring two versions of 'Hellboy II' to Blu-ray this November in two-disc and three-disc collector's edition configurations.

Buoyed by strong critical notices and a $75 million box office take, 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army' outgunned the performance of its predecessor to become one of the summer's bigger comic book-based hits.

Though Universal has yet to send out an official press release, a splashy ad in next week's trades has revealed early details on the home video release, which will hit Blu-ray and standard DVD day-and-date in two-disc and three-disc editions.

Tech specs and supplement details are still slim, but according to the ad, fans can look forward to high-def exclusive features including a "Build Your Own Comic Book" function and additional BD-Live content. All versions will also contain a Digital Copy of the film.

Complete details are also still to be revealed for the three-disc set, but the deluxe Blu-ray set will feature collectible packaging with additional goodies, including a painted Hellboy bust and more TBA.

Suggested retail price for the two-disc Blu-ray has been set at $39.98, and $64.98 for the 3-disc edition.

I'm the one who originally compared it to Training Day....but then my comments were taken out of context by chugga. No....Whitaker isn't Denzel....but I never said he was nor made the comparison.

The STORY itself is very similar to Training Day. I don't see how anyone who has seen both can argue that point.
they can if they simply want to argue

Maybe it's just me but I thought the accent/slang that Whitaker used when you first meet him just all of a sudden had me like "oh what the hell are you doing?". I really liked the movie, hell I've already seen it 3 times since purchasing it as proof of my liking of the movie. But Forrest Whitaker I'm sorry the way he played that character I didn't like it what-so-ever.

It's not like he tried to play the character exactly like Denzel's, it's just the WAY he tried to play it annoyed me.

I mean what is a stereotype of a brooklyn cop doing in the LAPD? Because when I heard him thats what I thought.

My mom called today informing me that the HDTV I got for my dad has been such a success that she can't get him to watch TV in the living room (SDTV) with her anymore, so she wants a HDTV for the living room now. Looks like I'll be shopping for something for them again.

Right now I'm thinking plasma and over 50". The only requirement they have is that the TV or the stand it is on swivels.

The TV would sit in their living room, which actually has a lot of light in the morning/afternnon, as they have big front window. Would the glare from a plasma TV be too difficult to deal with?

Are Panasonic and Pioneer still the best plasma brands?

Thanks!!

The glare wouldn't be too bad if you got one with anti-glare... it works surprising well, although doesn't solve the glare problem completely.

Plasmas over 50" also get pricey... 50" is the sweet spot right now. :)

Panasonic is probably the best route, although the Samsung plasmas are very good now as well. Pioneers are great, but tend to be more expensive.

Ah, anti-glare. I'll have to look at that.

Yeah, I was eyeballing a 58" Panny for them and it was like $3600. I'll have to look at the Samsungs as well. The TV I got for my dad was a Samsung LCD, which was really nice. A450 or something like that.

It's policy to have all B/S/T threads in the B/S/T forums.

Again, if you're helping out boardies with store or retail sales, then it's fine.
But if you're here to push your own sales then please start a thread in the B/S/T forums.
I would like to keep the thread here, but if folks are just going to use it as a B/S/T trade thread then it will be moved to it's proper location.
Which is what I don't want to do.

This isn't a B/S/T thread. It's discussion thread for enthusiasts of Blu-ray movies and HDTV technology. We are a pretty small group and this thread is kept alive by about 10-15 people. So what if we want to make a post in here saying we have a few movies for trade? What does that really hurt? Those posts would be a very very small minority within this huge discussion thread anyway.

oaktown2000

Seriously though....who cares if this thread "resides" on the Movies board...or on the BST board.

Every one of just go to our userCP to see when new posts are here anyways. It's not like certain posters are gonna disappear if the thread's moved. I say screw it...just move the damn thread...and let us BST amongst ourselves if we wish to do so.

We have a statue thread over on the BST for the same exact reason.....and the thread has had the same group of guys posting in it for years.

If we move to the BST board we'll start "hitting" each other with rep again. No one wants that.

If we move to the BST board we'll all take the latest fad and somehow incorporate that into our avatar....ooops.....too late.

Moving to the BST board is like getting into a time machine and going back to high school. But instead of the biggest nerds being the ones with the most toys, the coolest people have the most toys.

It's like going back to WHS but it's all guys, and theres no football team, theres just a giant band.

Wall-E BD details

On November 18, Disney and Buena Vista Home Entertainment will release Wall-E on Blu-ray Disc, day-and-date with DVD.

Wall-E will be configured similarly to Disney's Prince Caspian in two and three-disc packages. The third disc will include Disney File, aka a standard definition digital copy of the film. Unlike Prince Caspian, we expect the two-disc edition to include a slipcover.

Pixar films have always been given a royal treatment on home video and Wall-E is not about to break the trend. Like Cars and Ratatouille before it, Wall-E includes a number of Blu-ray exclusives including popular Cine-Explore. The remaining supplemental features are detailed below with Blu-ray exclusives noted.

Digital Copy (Blu-ray 3-Disc exclusive)
Burn-E: All-new animated short
Burn-E with Boards - picture-in-picture (Blu-ray exclusive)
Cine-Explor with director Andrew Stanton (Blu-ray exclusive)
Axoim Arcade: retro suite of videogames with a twist (Blu-ray exclusive)
Geek Track (Blu-ray exclusive)
BD-Live Network (Blu-ray exclusive)
Preston Animated Short
Deleted Scenes
Sneak Peek: Wall-E's Tour of the Universe
Animated Sound Design - Building Worlds from the Sound Up
Audio Commentary with Director Andrew Stanton
The Pixar Story by Leslie Iwerks
Additional Deleted Scenes
Wall-E's Treasures and Trinkets
BnL Shorts - Amusing peek into the inner workings of the Buy n Large Corporation
Lots of Bots Storybook
Making of Featurette
We don't have technical specs to share yet but you can safely assume a minimum of 1080p video and 5.1 uncompressed audio.

The two-disc edition of Wall-E on Blu-ray will carry an SRP of $35.99 while the three-disc set will clock in at $40.99. We'll pass along spec and additional artwork updates as received.

Not when you post a winky guy after the power trip!
Any excuse to post up Mr. Knox!

Really though, I see the people that actually contribute to the thread and others that are just looking to pimp their sales.

I will try to differentiate between the two and delete the posts instead of moving the thread; I guess I'm just asking for a little help from you all so we can have the best of both worlds. Without me getting the silly sand box complaints of "well they get away with it in that thread."

Ok we will monitor this thread and make sure we keep it to HD talk and nothing more. ;).

Honestly the group of guys in here are great and they ALL contribute something to the thread. Once in awhile we like to trade disc. We wont "Pimp" anything else.

Chris

Since you pay such close attention to the thread, I hope Todd saved $150 dollars on that camera with a new SonyStyle credit card.

That's the spirit....when life throws you a lemon.....

Way to turn the other cheek!!

Great Job Eric! :D:p:):D:eek::):D:D:p:);):D

"This Christmas" starring Lauren London is coming to Blu-ray this November. It doesn't get much better then that. Well it doesn't get much better then Lauren London, but thats besides the point.

I've been using this avatar elsewhere so I figured it was time for a switch. That and as much as I love the Dark Knight (awesome movie, beyond belief, probably the greatest of all time, the Dark Knight is like what would happen if God and Jesus came together for a science project) I figured it was time for a change eventually I just never had a good reason to do so.

Well, apparently I bring the fire and brimstone of the moderator upon our fine thread. My apologies to all. I meant no harm. I throughly enjoy this thread and interacting with everyone in it. The details and all the information I've gotten from this thread have been invaluable.

Indeed, pimpin is not easy. Again, sorry for drawing the ire of the mods.

Luke Cage....Marvels first black superhero to get his own comic book. But more importantly one of Marvel's newest movie projects. John Singleton is supposedly directing the Luke Cage movie, and his backstory could actually make for a hell of a movie so who knows.

The city needs heroes and oaktown is trying to be like batman. He's taking the blame so that the people have someone to focus their hatred on. When in all reality he is protecting someone else....a friend of his perhaps....maybe Harvey Dent.

Though there aren't many details, this still seems like a much better idea than Seth Rogan as Green Lantern.
