I saw this one a while back. It's a very coolstylized movie with lots of Kung FU type action and the special effects are very nice. IMO, it's a must have for Jacki and Jet fans. Very entertaining.
cool, so I'll pick this one up and The Fall...maybe Night watch. C'mon review sites.

Two new purchases this weekend... one the wife knows about. The other... not just yet. ;)
Picked up a new Sharp 32" LCD for the bedroom (720p). It's nice to have a third spot to watch tv if the kids take over one set and the wife the other. This one has the wife stamp of approval. $550 out the door after tax and recyling fee.
Today I broke down and bought XBox 360 #2. It will eventually go in the basement after the renos are all done. Futureshop is dropped the 20GB Pro bundles to $199 and it came with 2 games.
Needless to say that's the end of my hardware spending for a while... at least until I can find a third HD receiver for my tv at a good price. :D

Finally bought a lossless receiver: Yamaha RX V663. Took me a good three hours unhooking all the wires from the old receiver and hooking it to the new one. Tested Transformers on HD DVD and I could already tell the difference. This is more to the receiver than the sound type because I was using analog before on my old Onkyo.
Tested out I Am Legend on Blu Ray lossless and while the difference is there, I was more impressed with Transformers sound.
It'll probably take me at least a week to get familiarize with the receiver. The features are overwhelming. Once I'm familiar with it, I'm going to set it up on my Harmony remote.

hooking up speaker wire is one of the worst things in the world. nobody can be near me when i do it, because i might actually kill them for breathing.

IMO, this is how Resident Evil should've been done. The movies were so mediocre.

NM, I'll be buying it at Best Buy. My boss just gave me a gift bag from one of the MTV's VMA after parties. Very nice of him to give it to me. The gift bag came with a Best Buy gift certificate(doesn't say how much), a nice looking Pepsi Shirt - XL of course, some batteries and to top it off, a brand new Xbox 360 Rockband . I'm disappointed they're not coming in 2008, but honestly a bit relieved they're not coming Oct. 21.
With From Dusk Til Dawn, The Increbile Hulk and all the Bond movies on blu-ray, plus Bioshock, Legendary, Ghostbusters and Far Cry 2 on PS3 to choose from for me, taking a couple things off the plate for that day is probably for the better (at least on my wallet.)

You can download the manual on line and borrow someones set up mic. So no biggie there. The remote is the only issue but not sure if you really need it.

As for the Iron Man/Gotham Knight animated movies. Ehhhh. Gotham Knight was better but only 4 of the 6 stories were actually good (1 of them was terrible). Iron Man in my opinion was the weakest of all the Marvel animated movies.

Good to know. Every time I see Gotham Knight it's just sitting there, drawing me in and it won't leave me alone until I take it home. Maybe next time I finally will. I think I've read the back of the the case 3 times now lol.

I bought Kill Bill Vol 1 yesterday and watched it last night. The soundtrack is unbelieveable. It's now my new demo for how a soundtrack should sound in a Blu-ray movie. The gunshot at the begining to B's dome sounds like it's happening in your living room. All the music sounds unreal as well. Easily a 5 star rating all around. To me, it's perfect.

Exactly. Consumers in general have no idea what uncompressed HD audio sounds like. Walk into Best Buy and what do you see? Tons of HD TV's. Where's the areas where you can sit down to demo HD audio? Aside from Magnolia stores there are none. I know Dolby TrueHD is supposed to be bit for bit identical to the master just like PCM and DTS-HD MA but to me it doesn't cut it. It just sounds muted compared to the other two. I know that when I buy a movie that has PCM or DTS-HD MA it's going to sound balls to the wall anytime I want it to. Compare that to the Dialogue Normalization crap used in TrueHD and it's night and day.

My birthday is on Halloween so I'm asking for the Matrix set and the Gangster Giftset.

Weird. Those are the two exact sets I'm eyeballing that week. You're talking about the set with Casino, Eastern promises, and American Gangster right? For like $16.50 a piece.....I'll bite on the set.

Watched Street Kings today...what a great movie. Best thing Keanu Reeves has ever done in my book. He played that character perfectly. Forest Whitaker was ok....tough to watch him be a police officer after his stint on The Shield but it was ok. He took a lot from that I thought.
Supporting cast was pretty good. Jay Mohr in his role didnt seem to fit at the start but he did it pretty well. Hugh Laurie was very dry and it seems all his characters are the same.
Definetly recommend watching this movie. Im glad I did.
Next up is 7 seconds with Wesley Snipes.

Yikes...this doesn't sound good.
The problem with the picture, and it's not a small one, is the consistently high level of noise. While some noise is expected on a 35mm transfer like this, the level here is excessive (and evident when viewed in both DLP and LCD).

I trust this guy and his reviews over IGN any day. Figures IGN would confuse grain for noise. There's nothing wrong with film grain and I'm glad it's there.....
Video Quality on this release is 1080p in AVC MPEG-4 on a BD-50 (50 gigabyte Blu-ray Disc). First thing worth noting is that IMDb indicates this was shot on Super 35mm on PanArri and Panavision cameras using Angenieux and Cooke Lenses. This choice by Director Jon Favreau to shoot on two different types of cameras and lenses doesn’t seem to have been as drastic of one as by Christopher Nolan on “The Dark Knight” but at the same time was one that was semi-equally as rewarding. The black level is extremely solid, delivering bright vibrancy in the color palette and fleshtones are accurate. The opening scenes of the Afghanistan setting (which was actually filmed in Lone Pine, California), start immediately with a bitrate of 37.3Mbps, giving you lots of detail as this video can definitely breathe on its BD-50 disc.
There is at times an amount of film grain present as this was shot on Super 35mm film and not digitally so you have to keep that in mind when judging the video quality itself. Later on in the film once “Stark” has the “Iron Man” outfit on and you’re caught in the midst of the action you’ll really learn to appreciate how good this Hi-Def transfer really is. It’s not quite as much the type video quality to “jump off the screen” at you like “Transformers” but it is definitely enough to look extremely visually impressive and earn an excellent “4.5 Star Rating” for overall video quality on this release. The major usage of CG (computer generated graphics) actually doesn’t result in showing off any flaws here for those curious about that. Keep in mind we have to compare this to stuff like “Transformers” which I’ll mention for the last time here I assure you. Some scenes (namely those involving action, obviously) do hold a “5 Star” picture but because of the choice to use different cameras and lenses it doesn’t seem to be consistent enough to keep that amount of clarity throughout. Aside from that there’s really nothing at all to complain about here that comes to mind yet it’s just not worthy of an absolutely perfect rating.

That's a good sign then since both films are using CGI in most of their shots, moreso TF. Did anyone here see TF in the Imax? Was there any noticeable noise or grain on that big ass screen for that resolution output?

Those reviews come at it from two different angles to me.
The IGN one strikes me as more of the everyman review. It points out the film grain as noise, which is how the general person will perceive it. Prior to reading the other review, I had no idea it was shot on 35mm film, didn't care (still don't), and didn't know it would mean there would be film grain.
The other review says there will be film grain, but since it was shot on 35mm, you should expect that. As long as you expect that, then it isn't a big deal.
To me it sounds like the picture will fail to impress on the general user/viewer, and be fine among people who know too much about movies.
I'm still buying it the day it comes out, but I'm less excited.

You got a point there in terms of the 'everyman' perception of watching the movie. I too was not aware of the 35mm transfer much less the difference between grain/noise but it sounds like the techies are accepting a certain level of grain whereas the unaware consumer may find it a bit disconcerting.

We as Blu-ray enthusiasts are generally much more well informed about the technical aspects of the format than the general person. For that reason alone we should know that any movie shot with 35mm film, and there are a lot of them, should know that in it's mastering to digital/Blu-ray format there will be, and should be, some grain present. There's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure when the Godfather trilogy comes out in a couple weeks there will be some film grain present there as well. But at the same time knowing it went through a 4k restoration supervised by Robert Harris I know it will look as good as it can look on Blu-ray. We as enthusiasts should welcome natural film grain and criticize film studios for using tools like Digital Noise Reduction which wipes away high frequency detail.

I've noticed a few movies where it seems as though there is some noise on the screen throughout the moive. I guess grainy would be how I describe it, but I just thought it was something my TV did to some movies. Like the reflection off my screen or something. Now it seems as though it may be just because it was shot on 35mm film.
Wish I could remember a movie I noticed it on recently. I think either TWBB or NCFOM was one of them. I seem to recall being less than impressed with the picture because of it.

I just like to watch movies and see them in the best quality and form that I can reasonably afford. To me, that means being able to watch HD movies. Blu-ray provides that format to me.
I don't particularly care about the artsy aspects and the technicals of the Blu-ray process as far as film transfer goes. I just want the movie to look good and pretty when I watch it. Their non-game reviews are actually not bad from what I can tell. Usually rather subjective and pretty unbiased. The non-game divisions employ a lot of freelancers, so they aren't as influenced by the corporate umbrella.
Their game reviews.......egads. The only thing they are good for is seeing if a game is total crap or not. There is no real rhyme or reason as to why a game gets a 7.0-9.0. I just looks to see if something got a 5 or a 9+.

Perhaps that's the key right there...who supervises the transfer and ensures it reduces the grain without compromising the picture clarity.
One of my first blu purchases was Lethal Weapon and I had a totally different impression of HD before I viewed it than afterwards. It was such a let down but you do begin to understand how a film shot over 20 years ago cannot possibly compare to a modern film of today's standard.
Course I know there's a lot of apprehension in Hollywood about making the leap to digital cameras and leaving behind traditional film as many directors are still threatened by its technology. But if we are truly going to go the way of HD, than perhaps it's a no-brainer.
I imagine a film like Speed Racer which although was for kids, will probably have one of the best PQ to date imo for its digital transfer.
Here's a great article by Popular Mechanics on the Wachowski's approach to the movie.
If you can believe it... they shot 100 terabytes of total film!

I may have misspoke when I said "Blu-ray enthusiast". Maybe I should have said "film enthusiast" or "motion picture" enthusiast. It really strikes more to the heart of knowing that with Blu-ray film Directors can finally put a movie on a format for home viewing that duplicates almost entirely their vision and piece of work. Film grain is a natural thing and will be noticeable on Blu-ray at times because of it's higher resolution. DVD hid it for the most part because of it's maximum allowed resolution. A good example of a movie that DID have some film grain, even though it was filmed with 70mm film which being a bigger negative would yield much less grain than 35mm, is Patton. Upon first look it looks amazing. But after hearing comments from Robert Harris I now know DNR was used on it which wiped away a lot of high frequency detail that you lose when you wipe away film grain. So while it does look great, it could have looked even better if DNR wasn't used.

I do appreicate that movies look better and more close the the director's vision. I guess I would question as to how many directors actually like the film grain in their movies because it lends something to the picture, or just accept it as a fact of shooting on 35mm film, which is likely all they have ever done.

Anyone try this with Starship Troopers 3 yet?
By far the most exciting and innovative feature is "Put Yourself in the Movie," where you, the viewer, can upload a shot of your head to the BD Live Web site and then, brilliantly, appear in a few select scenes.
Of course this feature is almost totally pointless, but frankly it's some of the best time-wasting we've ever seen. We couldn't load the disc in our PlayStation 3 quickly enough, and our hands were trembling with excitement as we uploaded our photo. Bingo--as if by magic, there we were in the thick of the action.
Other interactive features include a director commentary and something called Marauder Mode, which is essentially the traditional picture-in-picture behind-the-scenes affair we're pretty used to on HD discs. You'll need a profile 1.1 player to use this mode, and profile 2.0 to appear in the film clips. So a PS3 is still the best way to watch this film.

There's actually a film association in hollywood (can't think of the name) who is highly influential and refuses to accept the integration of digital cams into the biz. I think it's more about the preservation of the hardware and its history in Hollywood. It's obviously a threat to how the future of film is made so certain members/producers will continue to resist the advancement until it's also more cost feasible.
Course it also doesn't help when people like Spielberg prefer to use older film (like on Crystal Skull) while Lucas to his credit preferred digital.

As there is no source print to speak of, the transfer looks very clean and shiny. The problem is video noise -- it's rampant throughout, especially in any remotely dark scene with subdued lighting. Blacks can also look flat and washed out, while whites bloom and smear frequently. Colors are well saturated, especially the steel blues of nighttime Miami, and lush greens and oranges in the daylight. Fleshtones are fine all things considered, but Mann often favors a slightly dour, reddish tint that left me cold. Overall depth and detail are good, but again that's in comparison to other shot-on-video material -- the HD formats Mann used for 'Miami Vice' can't compete with the depth and cleanliness of 35mm film or even Super35. I give this transfer credit for being representative of its source, but visually 'Miami Vice' just isn't my cup of tea.

No offense SBrooks but your source's background is questionable. I would get a quote from an actual director who's worked with digital cameras to provide any insight into the differences. ;)
Peter's Bracke's bio:
A high school dropout, Peter was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After his dream of opening the first federally-funded Chia Pet animal reserve collapsed, Peter somehow managed to sleep his way into the renowned USC School Of Cinema-Television, and there crafted such student film masterworks as The Easter Bunny Goes Shopping and Barbie & Ken: An Anatomically Incorrect Love Story.
Hoping to avoid the harsh glare of celebrity after such a promising start, Peter switched gears and founded DVDFILE.COM in April 1998, thus proving any idiot with a computer can run a website. Though he loves his work, Peter says what he really wants to do is follow in the steps of Mother Teresa, and help underprivileged children in third-world nations.

I'd argue that Miami Vice looked like crap because it was supposed to look that way to go with how terrible the movie was.
Wasn't TDK shot digitally? Obviously the last SW movies were. Those looked fine. I'd say it is more likely that Miami Vice was compressed in some way, as that is what it sounds like from the description.
Surely there have been some movies shot digitally since Miami Vice that look great. I have no idea how to find that out or I would look it up.
Hmmm...that was easier than I thought. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_shot_digitally

Apocalypto
Next (film)
The Other Boleyn Girl (2008 film)
A Scanner Darkly (film)
Silent Hill (film)
Superbad (film)
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Of the movies I listed, I don't recall anyone saying the movie looked like crap, however, I think I mentioned that in watching the OBG, I thought the blacks looked crushed in some scenes. Of course I thought this was just my TV at the time. It could be the compression used on the film though.

But again, isn't that more a feature of how the station broadcasts the content and how much they compress it on their end before sending it out? Stuff broadcast in HD still gets compressed by the networks or your carrier in most instances.
For example, my NBC HD looks like total crap compared to ABC and CBS HD. Heroes is almost blurry when I try to watch it, where as Lost is like I'm on the island and dead, or stuck in pergatory, or a timeloop, or whatever.

Oh, OK. I didn't really know what that meant. But I guess that brings me back to my original point that it has more to do with compression of the digital video making it look bad than digital video itself being bad.
To bring this full circle, the review that SBrooks links to mentions more than once that Transformers looks fantastic and doesn't have that film grain. I assume it was shot on film as well.
Why does TF look great and not have grain, but IM (which is shot the same way) has grain, so it doesn't look as good, but is OK because it is supposed to have grain?

Does the TF BD not have grain? Because the HD DVD certainly does.
Any film that had grain probably went through digital noise reduction (DNR)

Watched Transporter 2 - Pretty good movie, the last Statham movie I watched before it was The Bank Job which I liked better even though they don't really have much in common. Statham is about 1-2 movies away from having his own dedicated section in my collection with the likes of Stallone, Pacino, Deniro, Schwarzenegger etc.
The Forbidden Kingdom - Not bad, my wife liked it better. Couple laughs. My thing is I like seeing limbs being cut off and blood too much so this was a little too family friendly for me.
Starship Troopers - Rad, beautiful HD picture. *salivating

I got Baby Mama for my b-day Tuesday. Just watched that. The g/f loved it...i enjoyed it. Picked up Vol. 2 of the WWE Royal Rumble Anthology (only watched wrestling growing up it and it has the perfect timeline, 93-97) today at Best Buy for $13. It rang up $49.99 but somone accidently put a Godzilla $12.99 movie sticker on it, so they had to charge me for the sticker price...i love Best Buy.

High def digest's review of Iron Man.....3 1/2 stars for the movie itself? Can't agree with that, it's at least a 4. Needless to say, the disc itself is a winner.

A few words about...™ Iron Man -- in Blu-ray
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Although I'd seen his work in small roles previous to Richard Attenborough's Chaplin (1992), it was that film that had me thinking that he was one of this country's most talented actors.
Nothing in the interim has changed my position, and after viewing Iron Man in Blu-ray, I find my thinking confirmed.
Mr. Downey's Tony Stark is one of those performances that makes comparisons of a different actor in the role implausible. Mr. Downey simply nails it.
So too does Paramount with a letter perfect rendition of the film on Blu-ray.
Although wildly different, Iron Man is a film that at times during the finale had me thinking of two earlier films. One released some 10 months previous (Transformers) and another quite a bit older, going back some 65 years -- Frankenstein Meet the Wolfman.
A lighter film than the most recent Batman epics, Iron Man, which seems to have been designed for a bit younger audience, is terrific fun.
A fine film and a beautifully rendered Blu-ray disc that represents itself very nicely projected on a large home theater screen. Beautiful imagery. Great lossless audio and probably more extras than one has free to time enjoy.
Recommended.

Watched this as well last night. Great film. The little girl in it...just vaulted past the Jerry Maquire kid as "cutest kid ever on film". Insane PQ on any of the "story telling" parts.....the "hospital" ones seemed flat.....but I'm sure that was part of the drearyness the director wanted.
Did you go to the "photo gallery" section of the Blu Ray. Oh my....easily the most crisp, clear, vibrant images that have been displayed on my TV. Take a look at the pic of the Indian on the stone wall. I can see every dimple, crack, and hole in the stone wall. Incredible.

Agreed...I'm guessing since the disc print is only one color and black/white. Marvel Studios probably saved money on the printing vs. a 4-color job like Shawshank.
And if money was the reason they went the cheap and lazy route, then shame on them. As much money as the film made, they could have done something special. Hell, give us a two-tone screen of Iron Man in red on one disc and Iron Monger in silver on the other.

First of all I don't buy "everything". I sadly don't buy those stupid book versions of movies which will hold me back from buying one of my favorite movies of all time (Shawshank Redemption) if they choose to release it in that terrible packaging. I also don't buy anime movies. No Dragonballz movies here. And I don't buy TV shows that start off with anything other than season 1.

Well, the list of stuff you don't buy is still pretty low. I'm sure that the book-like movies probably get released in normal versions at some point. No one should buy DBZ movies.

Oaktown kept trying to get me to buy Appleseed and I actually bought it in one of the Amazon sales but then cancelled my order last minute. So really no haven't seen it yet.
