It looks like the Iron Man BD Live download is about 12 megs... try downloading during off peak hours (ie when you get up in the morning, if you're home during the day, up late, etc) and it shouldn't take as long.

I think my head is playing games with me. I know I had an Iron Man BD in my hand ending with 709, get home, pop in the movie, got stuck in the loading screen, checked the box..HOLY CRAP now it says 747. I know I had the right one in my hand. I'm so pissed off. I'm going straight to Best Buy NOW.

When my PS3 prompted me to make an Internet connection with blu-ray discs (which it does whenever I pop one in lately), I just said no. Iron Man then loaded up quickly with no issues.

Played some catch up last night on some Blu's I've been missing out on. I don't think any Blu-ray released so far has a better sounding score and soundtrack than both Kill Bill movies. The PCM 5.1's on them are just superb and far beyond anything else I've heard.

There should have been a UPC sticker on the cellophane with the new UPC.

The old Iron Man disc 1 was gray (and blu), the new Iron Man disc 1 is blue (and blu).

Blue being the actual color blue.
Blu being the format of the disc.

PS3 Owners: Change settings under BD/DVD Settings > BD Internet Connection set to Confirm prevent this automatic BD-Live download in the future.

Its easy to see if you have the new or old copy of Iron Man. The new Disc 1 is blue instead of Grey..

I put my copy of Iron Man in and it started right up. Cant wait to watch it

These are both excellent tips...thx fellas for the heads up as I'll need to double check my Best Buy copy since I haven't opened mine yet.

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture
Universal produced a fine 1080p/VC-1 transfer for the 2006 HD DVD release of 'The Thing,' and they don't mess with the formula here. We get that same master once again on Blu-ray, and also again in VC-1, though this time it's been re-encoded and spread across a BD-25 single-layer disc. There are no appreciable differences with the previous HD DVD, and this remains the best presentation of 'The Thing' available on video.

As a long-time fan of 'The Thing' -- one who has owned the film on every format imaginable, including VHS, Laserdisc, DVD -- I could tell right away with the previous HD DVD that the same source minted for the DVD was used again. Right from the first scene, I immediately recognized the position of speckles and blemishes, and sure enough, whipping out my old DVD for a compare the source material appears identical. Regardless, the original master is still in very good shape with only occasional dropouts and a bit of heavy dirt and grain during optical matte shots, but otherwise this is a pretty clean source.

That said, other aspects of the transfer are also well up to snuff. 'The Thing' has always seemed like a somber film full of overcast, wintery exteriors and grim, moody interiors, enlivened only by a few sporadic flashes of color. This Blu-ray will continue to dispel that notion, as the Blu-ray offers an appreciable upgrade in terms of richness and purity of color. Most impressive are the deep blues of the nighttime scenes, and the various putrid greens, yellows and oozy oranges of the Thing. (And don't forget the blood...) Color saturation is significantly improved here over the standard-def DVD, and I simply saw the film in a whole new light. Even better, there's no trade-off -- chroma noise and bleeding are not a problem.

Blacks are also deep throughout, and contrast generally consistent across the entire grayscale. Shadow delineation is above average for an older title, with the film's very dark second half never falling into murkiness or imperceptibility. Lastly, detail and depth are also very good. Perhaps a bit soft by modern standards, 'The Thing' still looks sharp enough. Many scenes in the film boast a sense of three-dimensionality superior to what I've seen before, such as when the crew first travels to the Norwegian compound. The level of depth and increased detail in these sequences was a treat for a longtime fan of the film like me. I remain quite pleased with 'The Thing' on Blu-ray.

Can't speak for any other "movie" experts who don't own a Blu-Ray player, but my situation is this:

New House > Blu-Ray player

My new house will be finished next week so I should be moving by the end of the month. Shopping list for the move:

- U Haul rental truck for the move itself

- curtains for the new house

Im gonna jump the gun since they will give me full value if I buy it now rather then a depreacted value. Im looking at a standalone for now, are there any out there that comes close to a PS3?

Nothing IMO... but if it's going to be relegated to the bedroom or secondary room, you're probably pretty safe with a Sony or Panasonic.

Don't know if you play games or how closely you follow the PS3, but the 40 GB model is discontinued.

The 80GB model out now (White box) replaces the 40GB and has the same features/limitations that the 40GB one did.

There is a 160GB model coming in November, which will come with Uncharted and something else as a pack-in.

The 80GB Metal Gear Solid bundle is the best option, if you can find one anywhere still.

Johnny the 160GB PS3s are up for pre-order. I think (not confirmed) that this one will be like the 80GB that came in the MGS bundle.

Meh, description says only 2USB ports, which means it would be like the old 40GB and new 80GB. Not sure i trust the Amazon description though.

Just upgraded the hard drive in my 60 gigger. went up to a 320 GB hard drive and the process of transferring most of my data was easy but still not perfect.

The backup and restore options on the ps3 are very convenient, however since I had used up all of my 60 GBs of space I ran into a problem backing up all the data.

The problem is that for the PS3 to be read by the PS3 it must be in the FAT32 format instead of NTFS which is usually the standard. The sucky part is you can only partition at most a 32 GB FAT32 partition on an external hard drive.

So I had to weed out alot of stuff and reload alot of music and photos etc.

Probably. I can't remember and I'm actually too lazy to look. If that was the case, then there is really no fundamental difference between a 40/80/160GB PS3 other than the hard drive. Does the 80GB that is out now come with a Dual Shock? I assume it does.

In that case, I'd probably just get one of the 80GB PS3s, unless you found a 40GB for cheaper than $399. You can always replace the harddrive yourself for less than $100.

I'd still try to track down the 80GB MGS bundle. You can sell off MGS if you don't want it and make up a little of the difference in the price.

Warner has a pamphlet in Poltergeist that shows some titles coming soon to Blu-ray. Titles mentioned include:

The Wizard of Oz
JFK
Shawshank Redemption
Being There
Woodstock
The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
King Kong (original)
Gone with the Wind
The Matrix 10th Anniversary
Rush Hour
The Notebook
Amadeus

I'm worried about LOTR now that Warner has taken over New Line's releases. I know Dolby TrueHD is supposed to be bit-for-bit the same as the master but I just don't like it. Compared to DTS-HD MA and PCM tracks it's just too quiet and subdued. In my opinion there's no need for any Dolby codec to be used for any Blu-ray movie.

Probably to gage interest for a popular catalogue title... they've seen how a set like The Matrix sells (and will sell again when the BD set comes out), so I imagine they'd like to see how a single title in a popular trilogy will do.

PrimeBane

It's a gage of how many BD players are out there... should they release a major title like LOTR, they're going to want to sell a TON of them (probably in the million units range +). If they can't hit that mark, you can bet the other movies won't hit BD until the format has become more mainstream.

Number of PS3s sold + number of individual BD units sold = Total BD players.

I would think this information would be pretty easy to find out for someone publishing movies.

http://www.vgchartz.com/?dg=1

If nothing else, then can easily estimate that there are about 5.9 million PS3s sold in the US and 15.5 million total. If one out of every 6 people in the US buys the BD, they sell a million, let alone all the other regions where I assume LOTR is popular still.

Not saying you aren't right, just saying I don't see why anyone would think it would be the biggest seller of all time to this point.

PrimeBane
10-03-2008, 02:49 PM
When I say "number of BD players out there" I mean the ones where people are buying movies. There's no way in hell that all 14 million or so PS3s are being used for BD movies on a regular basis.

Problem is, you're not looking at it from the point of the studio.

Why would they waste their money with replication costs, special features, etc to put out a disk that may or may not sell in the numbers they want? Warner has already gone on the record to state they are disappointed with BD sales to date (granted this was before Iron Man and Dark Knight).

If I'm a Warner exec, I don't release a gem like LOTR until I am GUARANTEED one million copies sold or more.

I do but the problem is that some of these movies are 8-10 GB by themselves and the FAT32 format does not allow for files larger than 4 GB to be copied and the PS3 won't recognize anything not in the FAT32 format. So the only solution I can think of is to stream it.

I think what JayD is saying is connect the external drive directly to the PS3, then you don't have to bother with copying the movies to the PS3. USB2 should have all the transfer speed you need :)

JayDouble

I do but the problem is that some of these movies are 8-10 GB by themselves and the FAT32 format does not allow for files larger than 4 GB to be copied and the PS3 won't recognize anything not in the FAT32 format. So the only solution I can think of is to stream it.

Make the external drive your destination for where you save the movies instead of your PC hard drive.

So, I've downloaded a few blu ray movies on my PC and I set up TVersity with my PS3 (I would just drop em on my PS3 but since the FAT32 format has a limit of 4 GB files that can be copied, I had to go the media server route)

Anyhow, the streaming to the PS3 works but it has to buffer every 20 seconds or so. Is there anything I can do? or is it just because it's streaming a full 1080p movie that it won't run smoothly?

What file format are the movies you downloaded? I downloaded a lot of WMV HD movies (Star Wars Episodes 4-6 1080p, they look terrific) and I have to play them through my 360 since the PS3 doesn't support WMVHD audio. :(

Watched Under Siege 2: Dark Territory and wow, some of the special effects have not aged well. Is there no main menu for this film? I press menu and all that comes up is a list of 7-8 trailers for old Seagal movies. This is as bare bones as a release can get. No commentary, no options, no HD audio, nothing. But, I still think this is Seagal's best movie and was into it the whole time.

I think the recent Warner "budget" releases go straight into the movie. It did for me, too, for Under Siege 2 and for Outbreak.

I have always been a fan of Seagal movies (the ones that went to the theater first), but yeah, this one overall has definitely not aged well. The villains, too, are just ridiculously unbelievable.

They are .vob files.....This would be so easy if the PS3 would recognize the NTFS format.

I'm starting to think it may be easier if i can break the movie file into several smaller parts.
Can anyone recommend a program that can do that?

Yes, depending on your PC, it is likely the issue that it is transcoding the movie and streaming it at the same time. It takes a good amount of CPU power to do all of that.

In a teaser of its 2009 next-gen slate, Warner Home Video has issued a new promotional flyer previewing a half-dozen of their DigiBook Blu-ray disc titles due for release next year.

The promotional advert first appeared in the studio's October 14 Blu-ray release of 'Poltergeist' (a review copy hit our doorstep last week). Though a number of titles highlighted have already been released or announced (including 'How the West Was Won,' 'Shawshank Redemption' and 'Casablanca') these are also the first official mentions of additional releases.

Though there are no street dates given, the ad touts 'Amadeus,' the classic 1933 version of 'King Kong,' and 1997's 'The Matrix' as all scheduled to get the DigiBook treatment on Blu-ray in 2009.

At press time, there were no additional information on tech specs or supplemental features. We'll definitely keep you posted as soon as further official word comes from Warner.

I forget. There are like 100 Nero apps in the auite I have, but it isn't installed at the moment. Nero Vision maybe? Basically you setup like you are going to make a DVD and import the movie file. Then you split it where you want and then export the split pieces.

Well, I had an interesting albeit disappointing Saturday...5.1 audio drop out! :(

So my dad just bought a new Philips 42" 1080p LCD TV - 42PFL3603D27 from Target, so I was anxious to test out this bad boy with him.

I bring over my PS3 and Speedracer to use as a demo. We hooked up the HDMI to the TV and then the optical cable to his Sony receiver STR-DE885 (which is at least 5 years old btw).

The movie starts up and looks STUNNING...vibrant colors and eye piercing sharpness, so I think he purchased a worth-while tv.

The disappointment came almost immediately at the beginning studio logo intros...as the audio signal from the optical cable dropped out intermittently. I checked his receiver settings and had the auto decoder checked. When the movie starts up, the blue light on the receiver lights up, indicating it's unlocking the DD 5.1 but unfortunately it drops the audio. I changed the settings under the PS3 BD Optical Out to linear PCM (vs. Bitstream) and still had the same issues.

Now after doing a little research, perhaps you guys can confirm this. I discovered that BD audio is best suited for an HDMI receiver input to handle the kbps of audio (the rate the compressed audio data varies with DVD's DolbyDigital having a maximum of 448 but on Blu-ray that maximum is 640...less compression, more data right?)

Long story short...I told my dad he'll need to purchase a new receiver to handle the audio sound of BD. He's familiar with optical sound only, but I told him HDMI is really the way to go.

This thread here seems to confirm my conclusion...

Sony has just announced the launch of its BD rewards program, set to begin with the debut of this week's 'You Don't Mess With The Zohan.'

The free program, entitled the Sony Pictures Blu-ray Club, rewards consumers for purchasing BD-live enabled Sony Pictures Blu-ray titles. Customers accumulate points which are tallied through BD-Live-accessible players, giving them the opportunity to earn Sony products and prizes, as well as the chance to become members of the greater Sony Rewards program.

Consumers join the program by creating user profiles via their network connected Blu-ray players. They can also create these memberships online at www.sonyrewards.com/bluray. They will then accrue points as applicable titles are purchased and registered, thereby automatically crediting the user's rewards balance and progress toward various rewards and prizes.

“Sony Pictures Home Entertainment is dedicated to providing consumers with the most dynamic Blu-ray Disc experiences possible,” said Lexine Wong, Senior Executive Vice President of Worldwide Marketing. "The Sony Pictures Blu-ray Club, made possible by the new interactivity of BD-Live, provides a unique incentive for our consumers who have embraced our Blu-ray high definition movies.”

To learn more about the program, go to the program's homepage at www.sonyrewards.com/bluray

Totally above my head but I watch all my BD movies on my 8ish year old Kenwood receiver and it does DTS and DD 5.1. None of those fancy new codecs. It works fine and the connection is all optical. I don't ever have any drop-out.

Occasionally the sound is a little quiet, so I have to turn it up a lot more than I would like, but otherwise it is fine. Talking scenes are a little more quiet than action scenes as well.

That's interesting. His Sony receiver does support DTS and DD5.1 as we tested out the audio with his Predator dvd but for some reason Speedracer Blu seem to struggle BIG TIME.

Some receivers just can't handled it for some reason (usually the poorer quality ones)... I actually had my old Yamaha shut down during Cloverfield :(

Thx for the input. I tried several different setups and noticed when I switched the audio to stereo (RCA) vs. 5.1, the 2 channels (left and right) worked fine.

This guy seemed to explain the problem relating to me...

First off, make sure the audio track in the movie's Setup is either Dolby Digital or Dolby TrueHD. With your PS3 set to Bitstream via optical, there should be no problem. If you don't select a Dolby Digital track, the default is 5.1 uncompressed LPCM, of which you'll only get 2-channel using optical connection.

Here's another thing: Some older receivers with Dolby Digital and DTS decoding capabilities have problems decoding Dolby Digital signals from some BDs (that's Blu-ray Discs). The reason is when these receivers were new, the only DD signal they knew was from broadcast HDTV at variable bitrate (384kpbs-448kpbs) or from DVDs (448kpbs). The Dolby Digital signal from BDs is 640kpbs, which is the maximum limit for Dolby Digital. So when these receivers are fed this signal, they hiccups. They shouldn't but they do.

Brooks, I have the same TV, I've got mine mounted on a wall, I had to buy a special bracket that would hold large TV's, I think I paid $200 for it and had a local AV firm install it for me. I can check the name of it as I think I still have the box at home if you want.

Yeah, that isn't a bad idea. Could you mount it on a bracket inside the entertainment center?

No, the wife doesn't want to wall mount it behind the TV and I'm sure she doesn't want any screws going into the wood of the entertainment center. I've found someone who will cut and weld about 2"off both pieces for me today. Cross your fingers and pray it works..... :)

As long as he does a good job and this works I won't care if he's got a Betamax copy of Wild Hogs Extended Edition in his toolkit..... :D

Eh, Joe came in here a few months ago all fired up and waving the banning stick threatening to move the thread to the BST board. Most of us don't really want it there, since we think it will attract more trolls.

I beleive it was my fault for saying I had some Wiis and other stuff to sell, though someone must have reported it. :o

No one is a fan of it, but we'll do what we have to do...

I suppose one could always put a post on the BST and link it here. :)

Son of a *****!!! TV with the stand won't fit!! It's about 1" too high. The stand has a huge gap allowing for the speaker to fit in there. I won't be using that speaker so it looks like I'm going to have to cut the metal brackets at the bottom 1 1/4" and then weld them back together. Ugh....

If only it was all 1" too short. They you could prop your tv up on a stack of hd dvds.

has anyone noticed that half price books is starting to get a tiny little bit of blu ray and hd dvd stock? their blu prices aren't that great, ranging from $15-$23. the hd dvd prices seem to be in the $10-$15 range. just another option to keep an eye on...

FYE has the 40% off coupon in effect again. I just picked up a brand new copy of The Godfather for $36. It was brand new and someone threw a used sticker on it.

Don't know, I got in trouble for it before I think.

I don't particuarly see the difference in posting a link to a BST thread versus just posting the items in the thread. It is just one more click. If the mods don't care, then so be it.
