My gamestops are finally starting to get in used copies of Blu-Ray and HD DVD movies. In the last 2 days I've found 3 Blu-Ray movies and 2 HD DVD movies. Prices still borderline blow though...anywhere from $11.99-$17.99
Mine is buy 2 get 1 free. Cant beat it. Plus the HD Dvd's are all MINT. I was surprised.

Is it just HD-DVD or Blu-Ray, as well?
EDIT:
Nevermind, I just went to bb.com and saw that it only showed that offer for HD-DVD. I guess I'll get Flags and Letters on HD-DVD instead of Blu-Ray now.

just got my 360 hd add-on yesterday, and picked up batman begins. even though alot of the detail is subtle with that movie, it's really amazing how good it can look. can't wait to get something special effects-laden and over the top.

Ridd ick or King Kong. Both great. Especially Kong. As amazing as some of my blu-rays look, even the best is still a couple wee hairs shy of Kong's PQ. IMO anyway.
Anyone know if the BB sale is going on tomorrow too?

Oh man what a deal I just scored at Amazon!
They had the HD-A2 HD-DVD player going for $237.88 with free shipping!!! Not only that but if you bought The Matrix Trilogy you get two additional free HD-DVDs along with the 5 free from Toshiba.
Since I had already purchased The Matrix Trilogy I called them up and asked them to refund the two HD-DVDs I was charged for today and said it should be refunded tomorrow once the charge goes through. So all in all:
Toshiba HD-A2 $237.88
The Matrix Trilogy $57.93
The Frighteners $17.92
Eternal Sunshine $17.93
5 Free Movies from Toshiba
Refund -$35.91
TOTAL: $295.75
Amazon is currently out of stock and all they have a 3rd party dealers...lowest being Electronics Expo going for $242 plus shipping!!!
Now I need to unload my addon on Ebay. Hopefully get around $125 for it.
So much for buying a Blu-Ray player:rolleyes:

I came across a good deal yesterday, thought I'd share. Hollywood Video is having a 99 cent sale on a LOT of movies, and if you live in the Southeastern US and have access to a MovieStop, this is a great opportunity. MovieStop allows you to trade any 4 dvds (of qualifying studios, which is all the "big names") and get $20 towards a new release that came out that week (the week you are trading in the movies) or put $20 down on one coming out in the future. If you're buying regular dvd, this pays off the movie completely, and if you're getting HD or Blu-ray, you'll pay $2-$5 for the difference. I just picked up Apocalypto and paid about $7 all together, $4 for the four movies to trade, and $3 to make up the difference in price.
Also, if you don't like the movies out that week, you can reserve movies as far in advance as you'd like, my store already has reservations for the new Harry Potter and Transformers.
I don't know how long Hollywood Video is having the sale, but it's worth it if you don't like to wait for new releases to drop in price.

I would never do this. Only because most of the movies I have paid between $13.99 - $19.99 so I am losing over $10.00 a moive x 4 = $40 plus. I would rather keep my movies for $5.00 and just spend the $20 and get the movie. But thats me.

You're missing the point of his post. He didn't say go and trade in YOUR movies. He said go and buy the $.99 DVDs from Hollywood Knights Video and trade those in at MovieStop.
So basically...he is trading in four $.99 DVDs he got from Hollywood Knights and then an extra $5-6 for a HD title. Basically getting them for like $10-11.

Exactly! Sorry if I didn't make my post clear enough. Also some pawn shops sell dvd's for $2-$3, which is still a good deal, because once you trade them in you basically get $5 a piece. Unfortunately, MovieStops are only in about 4 or 5 states right now, but we'll be expanding within the next few years. Lots of good deals in there, check it out if you have one near you.

After buying the A2...which I dont have yet...but owning an A1...will probably make me never buy Blu Ray unless its the sure winner.
Upscaled DVDs make up the difference of paying an insane amount for a BD player and rebuying movies...
And if it fails...then I will have a nice HD collection to complement my ever growing BD collection...if that happens.
Unless Die Hard or some other franchise comes to Blu Ray that I must have (Pirates doesnt count because its sequels are just like the Matrix sequels...good but not great)...then I will be contempt with HD DVD.

To me it makes plenty of sense. You could wait for a $300 version of a blu-ray player to come out or you could just drop $500 (if you can find a 20gb version) and have a great videogame system and a blu-ray player. Regardless of whatever actually happens in this format war, worst case scenario is you'll always have a PS3 to fall back on.
I'm not a firm believer in buying standalone players this early in the game. The whole firmware, disk read errors, compatability issues, hardware problems, etc that you can run across with early generation players just isn't worth the time for me. Granted you still gotta do the firmware stuff with the PS3 but it doesn't feel as necessary (I'm still like 4 patches behind the curve - could honestly care less about upconversion) and also it just feels alot more natural then just randomly plugging in a ethernet cable to a dvd player.

PS3 without a doubt. You will be waiting for awhile for a sub $300 BR player. You can get new PS3 60gig off ebay probably for around $500.00.
I would stay away from paying high $$ for a standalone BR right now and I cant see a cheap BR anytime soon.

The A2 would be more then enough for your TV. I am sure your TV is only 1080I and not 1080P so the extra $300 for a better upscale DVD player isnt worth it.
But the XA2 is the better machine if you have HDMI on your TV and a 100" projector to take advantage of 1080P.
The A2 is a great player for the price. Plus for $299.00 at your local store plus 5 free HD DVD's (mail in) still a great price

I saw a BR pre-order for Mr. & Mrs. Smith on amazon UK set for 6/11/07.
There is still no published release date for the title in the US that I can find. Anyone know?
My wife likes that movie for one reason, and I like it for another. My reason is Brad Pitt, obviously:rolleyes:
Sidenote: Has anyone seen the Unrated version of this movie? I don't think it's being released on BR, but I just wanted to know if it was worthy of a watch, kind of like those who ran out to buy Spider-Man 2.1 The theatrical cut was good enough for me, so I didn't give 2.1 a second thought.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith got handed the same fate as Glory. It was announced a long time ago, got itself a firm release date in March then got tossed into limbo at the last minute. Mr. & Mrs. Smith was actually pushed back the DAY before it was supposed to come out back in March. It will likely pop back into the release schedule sooner or later. Just don't hold your breath over it.
As for the unrated version much like Spiderman 2.1 I can't imagine what would be added that would really make it a better buy. Maybe a scene or 2? A little added extra dialogue between the 2 of them.

Well the fact that the UK is getting it in June actually bodes well for us over here in the US. Things are a bit slow in releases this summer I wouldn't be suprised to see it just randomly pop up on the calendar.
I just can't for the life of me figure out how an unrated version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith would really change anything. I generally pick up the unrated versions of movies if they are available, but it makes more sense in movies like Beerfest, Eurotrip, etc. There weren't many dirty jokes in Mr. & Mrs. Smith that could really be amplified with an unrated version. Maybe their little back and forth joking in the therapists office gets a little more lude, but thats all I can really think of.

Yeah, I'm like you - I'll buy the Anchorman or 40 Year-Old Virgin unrated editions, but movies like that are worth it...Spidey and Smith just don't seem like the extra $$$ is justified by 4 minutes of new footage or whatever.

Yes, first patch your player.
If that doesn't work you can boil the disk for about 10 seconds to help remove a production layer that scatters the laser.
If that doesn't work, Universal has a disk replacement program for such faulty disks.
I'm dealing with the same problem with Children of Men.

Fox and Disney...their two biggest exclusives aside from Sony...are releasing next to nothing (a few good titles here and there but they are few and far between) yet HD DVD is releasing not only new flicks that are great...but a fantastic back catelogue! Even nuetral studios are backhanding Blu Ray (Matrix anyone? Or how about the not as feature loaded edition of Blood Diamond)!
I cannot wait for Lebowski, Frighteners, Mystery Men, Mallrats, Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the dead, Dawn of the dead, Bourne Identity, Breach, Being John Malkovich, Liar Liar, Meaning of Life, Nutty Professor 2, 300, TMNT, Heros (never watched it but hear its great) and many many others!!!
Not to mention catching up on the titles I havnt purchased but want to, Fast Times, Cinderella Man, Seabiscuit, Jarhead, Fear and Loathing and many more!

My Circuit City just redid it's high-def section...dedicating more space and actually putting the movies in the movie section (what a novel concept)...it looked like they had most of the blu-ray movies released so far.
On another note, I finally had a chance through blockbuster online to watch Disc 1 of Planet Earth on blu-ray. oh...my...God. I think I need to buy that set now.

I think because of the extreme amount of grain in the movie....that stuff only shows up more defined in HD, and for me at least, becomes a horrible distraction. And I never buy the "director's intent" garbage...grain sucks and 300 had way too much of it.

Honestly though is it really that great? I've seen Planet Earth on DiscoveryHD a bunch of times now and while some of the stuff I've seen is cool as hell is the hd dvd/blu-ray version really that impressive in HD because the HD satellite feed is bleh. I've been trying to talk myself out of not getting it since the day it's been released but I do actually want to see it on my tv. To make matters worse my Best Buy did the same thing as your CC....they added a whole new rack for hd titles because it seems like they got in alot of backlogged titles recently....including finally getting in Planet Earth.

I think thats really all in the eye of the beholder. I can see dissing Fox and Lionsgate....Fox is just ******ed. Their business sense is awful, they'll release 8 movies on one day then they won't release crap for a whole month afterwards instead of spacing their stuff out. Lionsgate does some impressive work but few and far between. They are like Blu-Rays equivalent to Weinstein. Weinsteins only put out like 3 movies this year but they do good work when they do.
But Disney....Buena Vista????? I gotta respectfully disagree on that one. They've brought their A game on every single release they've put out since December of 2006. You may see a less than impressive lineup....but for me I've bought the vast majority of the movies they've put out in 2007 and all of them were exceptional. Both of the Pirates movies were reference quality. Deja Vu, The Prestige, and The Queen were 3 of the best movies in 2006 and their transfers made all 3 movies shine. Finding Neverland, Chicken Little, The Guardian all impressive work. If Disney is going to release a movie you can absolutely guarentee you're getting at the bare minimum 4 star AQ and PQ. Most of the time they venture even above that. I personally don't believe theres a better studio out there right now in delivering an amazing high def experience. They may not put out 50 movies a week but it's all about quality and they are delivering that...but don't get me wrong I'd LOVE to see they put more of their stuff out. But whatever they are doing now is working pretty well too.

It's a cinematic masterpiece about life, love, and music.
What other movies do you know of deal with spousal abuse, a dad shooting himself in the face and surviving, a motorcycle, breaking into the music business, and wait for it....Prince. Those are some heavy issues, most movies are afraid to touch on things like dads shooting themselves in the face and surviving. Theres literally no other movie like it out there, it's 1 of a kind.

'Pirates' Outsells 'Matrix' in Blu-ray, HD DVD Showdown (Updated)
Fri Jun 01, 2007 at 01:23 PM ET
Last week's sales estimates are in, and in terms of sheer unit sales, Disney's Blu-ray-only release of the first two "Pirates of the Caribbean" flicks handily beat Warner's HD DVD-only release of the two "Matrix" box sets.
According to market research estimates from Home Media Magazine, the two "Pirates" films sold a combined total of a little less than 47,000 units, while the "Matrix" sets sold about 13,900 units.
Since the "Matrix" sets sold at an cost of nearly three times that of the "Pirates" flicks, there's slighly more parity in terms of gross sales, but even there (as Blu-ray supporters have been quick to point out), "Pirates" gets the edge.
In comments first published in The Hollywood Reporter, Bob Chapek, worldwide president of Buena Vista Home Entertainment, called the week's win by "Pirates" a "strong and significant trend toward consumer preference for the Blu-ray Disc format."
"We are thrilled by the critical and industry response to 'Pirates' on Blu-ray disc," Chapek said. "But more importantly, the consumer has spoken loud and clear. This is only the beginning, but it was certainly a significant and explosive indicator of things to come."
Update (6/1/07, 5:27PM ET):
Several readers have written in to complain that comparing sales data for the 'Matrix' box sets to the two individual 'POTC' releases is a case of apples and oranges. They argue that the 'Pirates' Blu-ray discs benefited from a wave of pre-release publicity for the the third film in the series along with some bundled sales incentives at big box retailers, while the Matrix box set was dragged down by the fact that many fans already own the original 'Matrix' on DVD, and had little interest in the second and third installments of the series, making the higher pricepoint for the two boxsets a particularly tough sell. Needlesstosay, the discussion continues in our forums area.

Well of course its going to out sell due to the cost. But in the end its pretty much equal $$ wise.
Plus disk wise its the same as well you get 3 disc with Matrix so 3 x 13900 sets sold = 41700 compared to 47000 for POTC.
I wish Matrix was put out on single discs at the same time then you could have had a better comparison...
Also I wouldnt brag on either end with those sad #'s...
Really stupid to even try and compare these movies to be honest.

Which is why there needs to just be ONE format. It's ridiculous how many people will say "wow those new HD disks look amazing, I just don't want to buy into the wrong tech and be stuck with nothing". I off the top of my head know at the very least 8 people who would go out and buy an HD player tomorrow if there was only 1 format.
Longer this carries on the worse it gets.

I off the top of my head know at the very least 8 people who would go out and buy an HD player tomorrow if there was only 1 format.
Longer this carries on the worse it gets.
But look at the pricing now because of this. Sony just announced a BR standalone for $499.00. Thats the good thing. But I agree is getting worse and worse everyday.
Lets face it even if HD DVD dies tomorrow not alot of people are going to run out and plunk $500 down on a BD player. Plain and simple.
Until they players get down to $199 then MAYBE HD will take off.
I own both and enjoy both but in my mind neither will take off but to me it doesnt matter. I just want HD not matter what.
But to the average person they WILL NOT run out and dump $500 on a player and dumping $30 on a movie.

They may not plunk down $500 tomorrow but I could see them plunking down $500 this fall. Going into this holiday season with 2 formats again once again splits up the people who want to impress their spouse, child, whatever with an HD player they don't know what the hell to buy. $500 is a very very tricky price tag, but it's not nearly as ridiculous come November/December when people are dropping $400 on Cell phones, and MP3 players, and cell phones that are mp3 players. A high definition player for $500 isn't nearly as big of a deal to a good portion of the people out there.
You're right the average person won't drop $500 on a player...but for the good portion of the population that is "above-average" they will. You make one format RIGHT NOW and come this holiday season people with a little extra in their wallets will move over to the winning side and see it as a solid investment. The sales aren't going to be downright ridiculous and all of a sudden catapult the format into the DVD realm but if you put together the sales from both versions of the Departed you aren't looking nearly as bad as when they are seperate. You put together the sales of both Planet Earths and once again not so bad. Imagine if EVERYONE had a chance to buy Pirates of the Caribbean last week? Or what if Casino Royale was open to everyone with an HD player. Things would change for the better.

Chris
That article was complete moronic. Let's say that the third Pirates had already been in theaters and both trilogies (Matrix & Pirates) were being released simultaneously (Pirates on BR and Matrix on HD)...if they were both available in box sets and as individual titles, then a comparison might be in order.
The cheapest post pre-order I have seen for Matrix is $63.95 for the basic set and $73.95 for the extras laden set. Both Pirates titles are $23.95 each on amazon, so it'll be hard to find it cheaper than that. The 'cheap' Matrix set is $79.99 at BB, and the 'deluxe' one is $89.99. The Pirates movies are $29.99 each at BB, as well. There is no reason at all to compare single disc sales to box set sales. That's ****ing ridiculous.
If both series were on both formats, then maybe. Otherwise, a huge waste of time.

As Mr. Smith in the Matrix said...it's inevitable...that Blu-Ray eventually will win this war. This why whenever the movie I want is on both formats I'm getting it on Blu-Ray these days, including Planet Earth.
Although, even if Universal does go neutral to end the war...it'll be a hell of a long time before all their HD DVD titles are available on Blu-Ray.

See thats why I don't buy into HD DVD. I know you have both formats and I respect that, you get to watch whatever you want and thats cool. But I'm also under the impression that I can watch whatever I want but I just need a bit of patience. I can imagine one day seeing King Kong on Blu-Ray, so at least from my perspective why go out and spend who knows how much on an HD DVD player and pick up all the disks when with a bit of patience I can get them for ONE format sooner or later. (so thanks anyways HollandX)
Maybe it's petty or stupid of me but I don't really want to pad HD DVD's numbers....I absolutely hate this format war. The general uncertainy of whats going on with this format war will be the death of both formats which is why I absolutely despise the fact that it's gotta continue. So from my perspective me buying into HD DVD is a bad thing...the last thing I want to do is have my disk purchases on that format further delay the inevidable and drag this crap out any longer.
And to be completely honest I already watch entirely too many HD movies as it is, I don't even think I'd have the money to do HD DVD justice....hell since October of last year I don't think a week has ever passed where I didn't buy at least 1-2 movies to watch. I've watched more movies in the past 9 months then I've probably seen in the last 9 years combined. Ok maybe thats exaggerating a bit, but hell I've seen alot. To buy into HD DVD would basically make my purchasing double and theres just no way I could do that at all.

Well you can thank Microsoft for that....as much as I love my WindowsME and couldn't live without my Xbox360 it's pretty much accepted around the industry that they have tossed ALOT of cash behind the HD DVD train in hopes of it being a thorn in Blu-Rays side. I can't blame them, but as a fan of high def media I just really wish they would have kept their nose out of it and maybe HD DVD and Blu-Ray could have come to some sort of negotiation so that both companies could push one large format.

I can't believe the people behind HD DVD and BD can't agree on ANYTHING... except for the same case!
"We hate you."
"We hate you MORE!"
"Your crappy product will fail!"

I need to drastically slow down with my movie purchases, also. At first I told myself I was just going to get the ones that got the highest PQ rating that I also knew I'd watch over and over again. For the most part I've stuck to that, but I've also made a few blind buys, which gets expensive.

Even if HD DVD dies tomorrow and Blu-Ray wins IT STILL wont matter. It still going to be a niche market. People are just NOT going to pay those prices anytime soon. Within a couple years maybe just not now
Most people will just plunk down $90 on an upscale DVD player and think its HD and not spend $500 on a player
And they will not be putting down $500 on a player thats not 100% functional either.
Paying $30 a disk when they can get the SD version for $13.99 and have it upscale on their cheap upscale player. The average Joe probably doesnt shop on-line for better pricing for disk...
Most people do not even have an HDTV.
Blu-Ray needs to get a 100% functional player NOW and at the cost of $199.00 or lower to get people to buy into it. And thats not going to happen for a long time.
Just think disk sales are horrible now for both. Even if you combine the #'s.
If HD DVD didnt take off and this whole time you had just Blu-Ray.. Disk #'s would be so much worse because not to many people would be buying $599 - $1200 player.
The more you look at it I think HD movies is going nowhere.

i tend to agree with this, as well...however, there are basically 2 ways I see this playing out.
1.) The Mini-Disc/DivX way - meaning the formats will just die for one reason or another.
2.) The Infiniti way - meaning most of the people out there can't afford an Infiniti, and opt for the Honda instead. But that doesn't mean there isn't a market for the Infiniti, OR that Lexus can't compete for the same consumer class.

two weeks ago, i finally got my hd-add on and picked up batman begins. this past weekend, i finally fell in full force. best buy was having a deal where you could buy 3 hd-dvd's and get $20 off, plus i had $15 bucks in rewards zone coupons, so i picked up children of men, the fountain, and smokin' aces, all three for $64 dollars. then, at my local gamestop, i was looking thru the used movies and found king kong hiding out and for only 12 bucks. ( my hd-dvd add on was used and didn't come with kong, but with my trade-in's towards that it itself was only $133 bucks). so, so far i have spent a total of $209 and have an hd-dvd player with hdmi( i have an elite, thanks to the robbers breaking my 360 and me having awesome friends) and 5 movies. i was definitely someone holding off because of cost, but everythings been awesome so far. thanks to the boardmembers posting about the planet earth deal. ordering it tomorrow. wish i hadn't missed out on the matrix one, but maybe another mix up will happen.

Not every Blu-Ray known to man....but I do own T2. Ok heres the best I can tell you...it's probably the best wave 1 blu-ray title on the market. The wave one titles weren't exactly strong in the PQ department but this one was one of the first movies I watched from that awful period and it was a clear step up. A hell of alot better then the Fifth Element and 50 First Dates.
As time has gone on better and better disks have come out but I wouldn't be afraid to say it's a solid tier 2 title. It's pretty solid overall but some of the scenes can be pretty impressive for the time it was made.
Basically it also didn't hurt that I got the title during Targets $15 Blu-Ray sale.

In a surprise move, Sony's second-generation BDP-S300 Blu-ray player is hitting store shelves this week with a $100 price cut.
The player will now carry an MSRP of $499. That's half the introductory price of the company's first generation Blu-ray player, which was launched nearly a year ago at $999 (it now sells for $799).
This most recent price drop from Sony comes on the heels of a series of price cuts on both sides of the high-def format war. Following Sony's original announcement of the BDP-S300 at a discounted price of $599 in February, Toshiba announced its own series of pricecuts, followed by a month-long $100 rebate program, which has seen HD DVD player prices drop to a $299 MSRP, a move that Toshiba says has increased sales by five- to ten-fold at some retailers.
How low high-def disc player prices will go by this year's holiday shopping season is anyone's guess, but with standard-def DVD players retailing for as little as $50, it would seem there's still plenty of room for discounts before the purchase of a high-def disc player becomes a no-brainer for the average consumer.

And that's just the MSRP... one should be able to find it for less than that down the road, especially around the holidays. :)

Hmmm.....without giving anything away, the ending is kinda of a "oh...so that's how it happened". Once you see the ending, a re-watch is kinda unsuspenseful, although, you can try to look for subtle clues that point to the ending that you might have missed the first time through.
Personally speaking, I don't feel the need to watch it over.

Same here, as well with The Illusionist. I feel that the latter was the better film (not quite so much of a downer), but to each their own.

I bought a used T2 on BR for $14, but haven't watched it yet. I'm sure that Chugga's verdict will stand, though:)

would it count that I disagree with the above statements
The Prestige is a great movie and one I think has replay value
I enjoyed Children Of Men but that is a movie I would only ever watch again for the technical aspects of a few scenes
I would put the Prestige in every time if given the choice

I've watched the Prestige 3 times since I've bought it on Blu-Ray. I tend to disagree with what a few of the people here said...once you see the movie once and the major plot points are revealed you almost need to watch it a second time just to see how intricate and well done the whole story is. The big reveal will have you going back and seeing alot of different things the 2nd time that you didn't even acknowledge the first time around. Just tiny little hints in dialogue that you didn't think twice about at first.

Long story short I've come to the conclusion that catalog heavy weeks suck because no one ever wants to carry catalog titles. 4 classic catalog titles come out this week and what do I see on every shelf I come across? Freakin a dozen copies of Norbit. No one wants that movie.
Walmart also had a hell of a deal on Season 1 of Weeds. I've never seen the show and rarely heard of it but if you are only going to charge $19.99 for a full season of a tv show in HD I don't care if it's the golden girls thats too good of a deal to pass up.

Oh by the way I know we rag on them alot but FYE is really coming around. Last month or so I've gotten the vast majority of my movies from them. They get in the old stuff that no one else wants to carry. Enter the Dragon, Road Warrior, Dirty Dozen, Revenge, Dirty Dancing, Donnie Brasco, Trading Places, Coming to America, etc etc. They get them all in. Hell I didn't even know/remember half those movies I listed had even come out yet until I saw them today at FYE. But ontop of them getting in at least 1 of everything their deals aren't half bad, I was able to land both Hellboy and Trading Places for lower then Walmart and Best Buy were charging. I'm telling you FYE isn't such a bad option anymore at the very least for catalog titles.

But this is another one (like T2, and the upcoming Sneakers for HD DVD) that I never owned or don't currently own on DVD, and only VHS. So, of the two classic Eddie Murphy titles that just came out, Trading Places is the first one I want to pick up.

I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference between the discovery HD and blu-ray, I barely notice a difference when watching them, the main difference is that the blu-ray is the BBC version not the discovery, so some scenes may be different, and I know the commentary is different

The primary quality difference is that the HD channel is plagued with compression artificats on many systems. The disc release is the first time those people can watch a smooth image without being annoyed and distracted.
