Alright guys, got the TV fixed and it's installed now. Unfortunately I seem to be having a HDMI handshake issue with my Sony 720 and this TV. Component with my 360 works fine but neither my cable box (HDMI) nor my PS3 (HDMI) work. It flickers and the screen goes all multi-colored and fuzzy looking like this....

Update: Unhooked the PS3 directly from the 60" this morning and hooked it back to the receiver. Turned everything on and it worked like a charm. Switched to cable, worked like a charm!! Popped in Sleeping Beauty and it's unreal how great it looks. Finally seeing true 1080p video on this huge ass 60" plasma is so cool. With my 40" I could see everything on screen without having to move my eyes much. Now I find myself having to move my eyes much more to go from one side of a movie to the other.

Yep, and it is a pain in the arse. I had my cable box hooked up via HDMI to my TV and everytime it went from one resolution to another, it created the handshake issue. Usually flicking my TV to a different input and then flicking back fixed it, but you can imagine how annoying that was.
Cable companies solution was to use component cables. They said that HDMI doesn't work and wasn't supported. It obviously worked, just not correctly and could have been fixed by software. This leads me to another question though.....
How do you guys all have your cable/sat boxes setup? I have mine set to output at whatever the native resolution is and then scale it at the TV. So the DirecTV box I have is set for Auto or something like that, which means, if the signal is 720p, it sends that and then the TV converts it to 1080p. 1080i is sent and then converted to 1080p as well.
I find this works for the most part, but when I change channels, the TV sort of flickers a bit, if I change resolutions. I'm OK with that if that is the best way to set it up. Is it better to have the Sat box scale the picture and send out one signal or the TV?? I have a Sony KDS-50A2000 if that matters.
Also, does anyone else have an issue with NBC appearing blurry? When I watch Heroes or Knight Rider, whenever there is movement, the picture is very blurry and I see what I would call ghosting. It is far and away the softest picture that I have of the main network stations (NBC, FOX, ABC, CBS).

Hey guys, my regular DVD player is crapping out. So I either need to get it fixed or buy a new one. I have some questions about Blu-Ray players.
(1) Can a Blu-Ray player play a regular DVD?
(2) Can a Blu-Ray player play a regular DVD on a regular TV?
(3) Can a Blu-Ray player play a Blu-Ray DVD on a regular TV? I know it probably can't, and if it did it would not be like crystal clear or stunning like on an HD TV, but never hurts to ask LOL. :)
If I did get a Blu-Ray player then the big step would be convincing my parents we need an HD TV. :p

Onkyo give you the best bang for your buck in a next gen receiver. If I was living in the US I'd own one by now at the price on it is pretty amazing (around $350 on sale). The exact same receiver is $600 here in Canada.
Pretty much everyone in every forum will tell you if you want a really great entry level receiver, the Onkyos are the way to go. You get feature at the price point that you normally only see on the more expensive mid and high range receivers that you don't see on other entry level receivers.

My 2 cents, convince the parents to get the HDtv with HD satellite first. Once they see how awesome it looks (especially for sports), Blu-ray isn't as tough a sell.

A decent Blu-ray player will set you back at least $300 plus tax. The PS3 (the best Blu-ray player currently available) will set you back $400 plus tax, but at least you can use it to play games (NHL 09) and even stream video and audio content from your computer.

No, they aren't really big TV fans. They watch rodeo mainly (does anything like the Stampede come in HD?).
Ok, so about $300 to $400 for a Blu-Ray player. A lot of money, but probably worth it.

just got this email from netflix...
Dear Mike,
As you may know, Blu-ray movies are more expensive than standard definition movies. As a result, we're going to start charging $1 a month (plus applicable taxes), in addition to your monthly membership charge, for unlimited access to Blu-ray movies.
The additional charge for unlimited Blu-ray access will be automatically added to your next billing statement on or after November 5th, 2008 and will be referenced in your Membership Terms and Details. If you wish to continue getting Blu-ray movies for $1 a month more, you don't need to do anything. If not, you can remove Blu-ray access anytime by visiting Your Account at the Netflix website.
If you have questions about this change or need any assistance, please call us anytime at 1-888-638-3549.

Matrix Blu review: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/300/matrix_umc.html
Unfortunately, like the HD DVD, the Blu-ray finds much of this bonus material presented in 480p/i/MPEG-2 only. To the studio's credit, they have headed high-def fan outcry, and this time we get upgraded 1080p/VC-1 video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio (48kHz/16-bit) on 'The Animatrix,' which on the HD DVD was standard-def only. No, this entire box is still not in full HD, but it's still a jump up from the HD DVD.

Thx for the link. I think I'll make a purchase.
Noticed the following niceties...
In a nice surprise, Warner has added a bonus fresh to the Blu-ray (and HD DVD) releases: the first-ever audio commentary for the film with director George Miller and director of photography Dean Semler.
For this Blu-ray release, Warner has opted for the original international opening credits for the film, so while this disc is being released as 'The Road Warrior,' the film itself carries the title 'Mad Max 2.')
The source has been very nicely cleaned up -- all of the excessive grain, dirt, dropouts and splice marks have been removed. I was amazed at how clean and smooth the image now looks

Question. For movies that are on TV in high def that aren't out (or announced) for Blu-ray. Did the studios just make a quick hi def version for TV... Or did they spend time on this version in order to port it to Blu someday? Or is this a quick hi def version, and when they do(if) port it to blu-ray one day, they'll spend more time on it?
Is this making sense to anyone?

ewto16
10-08-2008, 01:22 PM
I wonder if this is related to my issue.
If you've ever tried to enjoy a sporting event on NBC, you've probably noticed that when the action really starts getting good, your picture quality goes south, and fast. This phenominom has been thanks to 90 of the NBC affiliates around the country deciding to steal bandwidth away from the primary HD feed and dedicate the bits to a 24-hour weather channel called Weather Plus. Well after four years of trying, NBC Universal decided that if you can't beat 'em join 'em, and instead bought a stake in The Weather Channel, which thankfully ended up meaning no more Weather Plus. The bad news is that the macroblock loving fools are already starting to think about what other crappy SD programming can go in its place.

HollandX.....I'm sitting about 15 feet away from my 60".....Is that good, bad or optimal?
Well it's all what you like the most. It's completely personal preference, and I'm always curious what people choose and like.
This is the unofficial calculator on viewing distance: http://myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html. According to it, with a 60" TV size, you should be at a maximum of 8.5-9 feet away.
If you're not willing to try that close for whatever reason, and you're asking my opinion... I think you might be happier around 10-11 feet away if you can.
Prime's at 12-14 feet away for a 100" screen.
HollandX
10-08-2008, 01:26 PM
The unofficial chart for viewing distance is here:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c121/everandaday363/resolution_chart.png
According to it, you'll experience 1080p between 7.5 - 10 feet.
So, you might want to bring it a little closer and try it out, even if not that close.

That's what they said about 120 GB Hardrive and HDMI port... MS denies, denies denies until they decide to make the announcement for themselves.
Not saying your uncle is wrong, he just may not have been privy to the info should they want to keep it under wraps.
Meh, this rumor was around last year when HD-DVD died. I don't put any weight into it yet.
MS would deny that the sky was blue if they hadn't decided to announce it yet. They kept denying a price drop on the 360 for weeks even though there were tons of ads showing the price drop.
They do this so people don't just wait to buy the cheaper/newer item usually. If you know a price drop is coming in two/three weeks, then you are going to wait, and that equals lost revenue for MS.

Do they like tv? Are they CSI fans? NCIS? The Unit? Those show shine in HD. :)
A decent Blu-ray player will set you back at least $300 plus tax. The PS3 (the best Blu-ray player currently available) will set you back $400 plus tax, but at least you can use it to play games (NHL 09) and even stream video and audio content from your computer.
Dude, some Sony's are now going for $259 with Iron Man right now.
cflames89
10-08-2008, 03:45 PM
The PS3 is your best route... Blu-ray won't really show that well on an old SDtv, so at least you could rent a few video games to play while waiting for the tv.
I'll tell you, I am using a really old GE tube, and the wife noticed a huge difference between Batman Begins on DVD and BD. It's not a full on difference, but if my wife can pick it up and then demand all new movies on Blu-ray, it must be somewhat significant.

According to a recent article published over at Home Media Magazine, Studio Paramount is claiming to have sold at least 260,000 copies of “Iron Man” on Blu-ray Disc in just the first day of release. Also it’s said that in the first week a total well over 500,000 (half a million) copies were sold of the Blu-ray Disc release alone. Combined sales with the DVD format would put it roughly at around 7,700,000 copies (with 7.2 million from DVD).

The vast majority of people honestly just don't care, and let's be honest, if you're not looking at the two side by side, DVDs picture is just fine for most. I'm enjoying the hell out of it, but I just don't ever see it getting past the niche market. That is of course unless they make players and media identical in price with DVD, which just isn't going to happen.

Yes, it will given enough time. Blu-ray players are already falling in price and you will see some below $200 over the holidays, maybe under $150. Blu-ray movies are still too high, but those will continue to fall as well. People forget this follows the exact same pattern as DVDs did and that CDs did before.

VHS to DVD was a not brainer... the upgrade was very significant and it didn't require a new tv purchase. It was a glorious day when I got my first DVD player back in '99. Not more flat colours and fuzzy pictures. :D
BD is a tougher sell. It shouldn't look better (but does for some) on a SDtv... you really need an HDtv in order for BD to shine.
The other thing that I believe is hindering BD adoption (and this is only my opinion) is the whole tech and cabling thing. Many people get turned of with all the additional tech talk (720p, 1080i, 1080p, upconversion) and even more so when the snake oil salesmen at whatever store tells them they NEED to buy a $100 or $150 cable in addition to their BD player.
I want BD to succeed as I can never go back to DVD. 500,000 copies the first week for Iron Man is good, but it should have been way better considering BD is the only game in town and this is the first MAJOR summer release on the format since HD DVD went away.
750,000 would have meant significant growth... a million copies the first week would have meant BD is here to stay.

U can get it cheaper on-line :p Your discount should be better then what you can buy online for. IMO.
They have it listed for $5500.00 on BB website and you got it for $3888 which is a good deal but still a little higher compared to on-line prices with free shipping and no tax.
Makes you wonder what they hell they paid for them. Holy markup batman.. Thats insane.
I am trying to talk my Manager in getting one for his house. He is building a home and asked me what to get.

I am still trying to figure out how your discount works. They have sleeping beauty on their website for $25.99 but thats what you paid for it?? Shouldnt your discount be off the $25.99 price and not the retail price of $34.99?
The reason I ask is because they are building a BB next year right next door to my work. I was thinking about getting a job there parttime for their discount. But it doesnt sound like its all that great.

I bet the economy has something to do with the slow sales. I know since I am in the middle of a divorce and just started working 2 Jobs, I know movies are not a top priority as they used to be with me when I had more disposable income. The only reason I was able to get Irom Man on BR, was I took one of my 5 free movies back that I had saved when I bought my player. It was an even exchange. So thats the only way I could have got Iron Man.VHS to DVD was a not brainer... the upgrade was very significant and it didn't require a new tv purchase.

I'm guessing that the discount is off the regular price and not the sale price. It's still a pretty good discount overall. I spend 20% of my time working there looking up SKU's to see what my discount is. LOL :D

It is like VHS and DVD. So many people, including my household, didn't believe VHS would ever lose to DVD. Well, guess what? I still have VHS player but on the shelf above it is a DVD player and a library of DVDs in the cabinets that used to hold VHS. :o
I don't see it as anywhere near the same as the VHS/DVD battle. Technology is progressing at nearly 25% faster than it was back then. Bluray doesn't have the same time frame to win out that DVD did and Bluray will have more mediums pulling away from it than any format of the past. I think this battle looks more like the Laserdisc/DVD battle. This is of course on top of what was mentioned in earlier posts about the leap from one format to the next and the public perception of just how big a difference it is, and how much more money that is worth to them to buy everything required to truly enjoy Bluray.

Yes, it will given enough time. Blu-ray players are already falling in price and you will see some below $200 over the holidays, maybe under $150. Blu-ray movies are still too high, but those will continue to fall as well. People forget this follows the exact same pattern as DVDs did and that CDs did before.
I also thought Iron Man would sell way more than that.
Interestingly enough, when Iron Man came out, DVD was $26.99 , BD was $29.99, here in Canada, so movie price wise, not much of a difference for new release now.
cflames89
10-09-2008, 06:04 PM
Yeah it's in a small paper case attached to the front of Blu-ray case. Does me no good. I paid $25 for the with my BB discount which shocked me since it's $10 off.
Damn, that is good, cuz here in Canada, even at $29.99, it is below cost.
Also, I like what Disney did with throwing in the DVD, even if it was cheap packaging, as it is great for me because no one else in my family has a BD player yet, so when the boys go anywhere, they can take Sleeping Beauty with them.

Most companies are like that, but many times, when new movies come out, they are at cost or lower, at least here in Canada.

"Holy Mary Mother of God" This is by far the best this has ever looked. I would give this a 4/5 for PQ the AQ was about the same. If your a fan of this movie which most are I would Def pick this up. This is a common misconception people have about the PS3. Even if you don't ever use it for games, it is a terrific blu-ray and DVD player. People keep thinking games first, then blu-ray player with it. Really it is a 50/50 split, or some would say blu-ray player that plays PS3 games.
Not to mention you can view photos on it, stream music and other media, plus the PSN video store enables you to have a large selection of on-demand movies and TV shows. No standalone player allows you to do that stuff.
2.0 means it can do all the BD-Live stuff. Personally, I think BD-Live is stupid and stinks, but if you are a person that likes to watch the supplimental stuff and extras that movies come with, it is essential. Basically, all that stuff is interactive on Blu-rays, and you need a 2.0 compatable player to view it.
Most standalone 2.0 players still require that you put a USB stick in a port to give the player the memory that it needs to run the BD-Live content. The PS3 tops this by having a HD built in.
Read other reviews online. Any of them will tell you that it sounds odd, but the PS3 is the best Blu-ray player out there today.

Yeah, the special features on Blu-rays are typically interactive now. They are what the special features used to be on DVDs. There are still some regular ones that don't have anything special to them, but there is a lot of picture in picture stuff with commentaries now.
Lots of movies seem to have the ability to play the movie and then have other stuff pop-up during the movie too. Usually this stuff shows off some behind the scenes stuff like a storyboard, shows filming, or something like that.
Some of that stuff is actually kind of cool.

What else comes out that day?
I saw this at the theater and it was decent, but not that fantastic. I mean I chuckled some times and was entertained, but it isn't something I would watch again.
I have never laughed so much in the theater in my entire life. I put this up against Slap Shot and Blazzing Saddles as some of the funniest stuff ever on film, but I will wait to see how it holds up against multiple views.
As for the 18th of November:
Wall-E
A Marvel 3-pack containing Daredevil and both Fantastic Four movies
and more than likely I will pick up Hellboy 2 that day from the week before.
Hellboy, Tropic Thunder, and WallE all on the same day.... ugh :o

PB, where did you get your list from, because every list I have seen, and at work, shows Hellboy 2 on the 11th, not the 18th.

It is the 11th.... I had to go check to make sure it wasn't delayed for some reason

Looks like it's a goof on HDD's part... Universal home video says the 11th as well.

Tropic Thunder is in the top 5 funniest movies I've ever seen. Probably top 3, if not #1.

Went to the only town in LLB that sells a variety of electronics to check on BD players. They had one, a Sony BDPS300 (I am pretty sure) on sale for $500, regular $600. $30/month payments.
I am not wanting to spend that much, but it proved to me I will not find a decent priced BD player in LLB. :o

So you guys started to buy Blu Ray disc before purchasing the player, or after that ?

Honestly just buy a PS3 like so many have stated. Its a no brainer. Also sometimes they run a deal if you open a sony credit card and after your first $299 purchase they will credit you back either $100 or $150. Thats how I bought mine for so cheap.
PS3 loads lightning fast, Zero problems and easy to update. Pretty much Future Prood. I dont understand why people would even consider a BR SA player right now. Better one's will be coming out and at better pricing.
But if you want something now the PS3 is the ONLY player I would tell people about.

The only reason I didn't go the Sony Credit route is that Sony didn't offer an extended warranty. But it's a hell of a deal if that doesn't bother you.

You didn't get the Happening?
Good for you, I watched it last night and it was bleeeeehh. Remember how they were like "M. Nights first ever R rated movie!!!!", all of the deaths are seen in the trailer. ALL OF THEM.
