The ants part wasnt bad other then when they made their own little ants ladder to attack people. I am sorry but I dont think ants are super problem solvers to figure out to make a ladder to attack someone hanging from vines above them. The fridge part did take away a lot from the movie. It was just so far fetched that it does take away from the movie. It was like the part in Transporter 2 when he flips the car to knock the bomb off the bottom then lands and keeps going.

I would like to get the Bond films but would like to know about the quality of the older movies.
from Robert Harris
A few words about...™ Dr. No - in Blu-ray
Make no mistake. Dr. No was a film made on a tiny budget, which it outshines at virtually every turn.
I've heard numerous tales about precisely how the Bond series got its start, and the one that I believe came from a UA exec who delivered the news to Mr. Broccoli and Mr. Saltzman.
After meetings at UA, the pair were ensconced in their Manhattan luxury hotel, and on a particularly hot day, the air conditioning had gone down. When the exec arrived, he found the pair in their suite, nervously pacing in their shorts.
The word from UA was positive. They were going to finance their film.
And they were going to allow them to shoot...
in color.
From these inauspicious beginnings came probably the greatest financial blockbuster of all motion picture series, now hitting number 22.
I'll say it again. Dr. No was an inexpensive film -- probably around one million or less. For those who have not seen the early films in the series, don't expect hundred million dollar extravaganzas. Just terrific filmmaking on a budget.
I presume that it was photographed on Eastman 5250, the same emulsion that was exposed by Freddie Young to capture Lawrence of Arabia, and like many popular films, the original negative saw its share of use.
M-G-M and Eon made a prudent move in permitting Lowry Digital to scan, digitize, and work their magic on the elements. A featurette produced several years ago describes the work performed as restoration, and while I'm not certain whether the actual work performed was restoration or digital cleanup, the final result on Blu-ray is nothing less than spectacular.
There is also something of major importance to the home theater community to be learned here that has measurably increased the carbon footprint of the web since the release of Patton and The Longest Day months ago. And that is a very simply fact regarding noise and grain reduction.
Noise and grain reduction are not, in and of themselves, bad things.
The correct post facility, using the correct (here Lowry's proprietary) techniques, can make a huge difference in the viewing pleasure of films from the last half of the twentieth century.
In this case, a film cropped to 1.66 and therefore enlarged for home video has an attractive sheen of delicate moving grain. Having worked with 5250 and 5251, this does not appear to be the original grain, but good, natural looking grain of a slightly later vintage. And the overall image is beautiful.
What does this mean?
Simple. It means that with the proper tools and the right people behind them, grain can be removed or reduced WITHOUT AFFECTING THE RESOLUTION, DETAIL OR HIGH FREQUENCY INFORMATION.
Dr. No, via the wizards at Lowry Digital, looks far better than it has any right to look. The overall viewing experience is superb. The disc arrives at a street price with a full list of extras of around $23.
The question that I raised earlier, as to whether this film is truly "restored" in the full sense of the word really doesn't come into play here. The single overriding fact is that the Blu-ray is as perfect as it can be. Any modifications to grain in moving toward the final resultant image are secondary, as unlike some of the other films which we consider classics, and which may actually depend upon the original grain structure, the Bond films are and always have been, pure visceral entertainment of the highest order -- more fashion than art, great story-telling, and as they moved from production to production, eventually produced on the grandest of budgetary scales.
This is merely my first look at the new Blu Bonds. I need to spend some quality time with them as I can find the time, and will report back with findings.
Suffice to say that the first episode, Dr. No, went well beyond my expectations. A very high quality disc representing the birth of a behemoth series.
Highly Recommended.
RAH
A few words about...™ From Russia with Love -- in Blu-ray
For the second installment in the Bond series, following the success of Dr. No, the budget received a major bump, expanding exponentially the abilities to create high quality entertainment.
Set-pieces were bigger, and the entire production far less roughly hewn. This is both good and bad for the present Blu-ray, and our discussion must once again turn to grain. With the removal of grain as it existed on the original Eastman negative by the Lowry Digital system, everything is now exposed -- sharp, crisp and crystal clear. And in some instances, possibly not a good thing.
Within the first ten minutes we run slightly amuck in digital cleansing.
Two examples: There is a huge set encompassing the chess game with huge painted ceilings. In the Blu-ray it appears for the first time that the ceilings and walls are unstable, and possibly a matte painting. With a grained imaged, this would most likely not be noticeable. And that would have been the way that it was planned.
When we first meet Lotte Lenya, who plays everyone's favorite nanny, Rosa Klebb, we are treated to a couple of close-ups of the actress, then in her mid-60s. With a bit of the original grain and the slight softening of the image via the original dye transfer printing process, we wouldn't be staring at her heavy makeup. But as an image harvested from the original negative, and then de-grained, yielding an even sharper image...
Though most of the film, this isn't a problem, and the resultant image is pleasing, and all is well.
As I noted in regards to Dr. No, the Bond films were never looked upon as "art," so a bit of image manipulation, where it doesn't take one of the film may not matter.
A pretty, sharp, fully detailed and certainly a clean and grain-free image courtesy of Lowry Digital. From Russia with Love is Recommended.

Via IGN...
Last week Sony released firmware 2.50 for the PS3. However, in a bizarre turn of events the latest firmware prevents the PS3 from displaying an image on some state-of-the-art Sony home theatres.
We installed firmware 2.50 yesterday only to be greeted by a blank screen. After much swearing and trouble-shooting we discovered it was the Sony amp/receiver that was incompatible with the new firmware. We were able to get a picture again by cutting the Sony amp out of the loop and going straight into the projector.
For the record the IGN AU PS3 setup includes a 7.1 Sony amp/receiver supporting 1080p over HDMI and a 1080p Sony projector. The fact that the new firmware renders the PS3 unusable with this top-line Sony home theatre is utterly boggling.
On a related note, while trouble-shooting the problem we hooked the PS3 up to the projector via composite and also found that it's currently only displaying a black and white image over this video signal. These are both quite serious bugs to sneak through with the latest firmware.
We contacted Sony Computer Entertainment Australia about when this issue will be addressed and they are currently looking into the problem. We'll update you as soon as we hear more.

Agreed....no one really wants to update their stuff. They just want it to work.
Though in fairness, the update was actually PS3 related and just effected the BR playback on accident. So it wasn't like they tried to update some BR features and failed, they just didn't test stuff properly it seems.

The whole thing came off as creepy. Now he wants me to meet him at a mall near his house, which I assume will turn into meeting him at his house.

Yeah, I thought it was too weird as well. I just envisioned getting jumped and beaten up for a headset.
I sort of thought it would be like a local eBay, but it is really more of a local garage sale/flea market, at least here. When I was listing other stuff, either my post would just get flagged for removal or someone would offer to buy a hard to find $250 item for $200.
I think this will probably be my last go around on it. I thought I would give it one more try since eBay fees are so high now, but I think I'd just rather deal with that now than getting mugged.

Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition
In terms of new announcements, the really big news today is that Disney has just officially set the Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition for release on 2-disc DVD and 2-disc Blu-ray on 3/10/09. The DVD (SRP $29.99) will include audio commentary with Leonard Maltin, Eric Goldberg and J. B. Kaufman, song selection, a Pinocchio's Matter of Facts trivia text track, 2 deleted scenes and an alternate ending, deleted songs, the No Strings Attached: The Making of Pinocchio documentary, live action reference footage, art galleries, The Sweat Box featurette and the Pinocchio Puzzles interactive game. The Blu-ray Disc (SRP $35.99) will add the Cine-Explore option, BD-Live features (Movie Chat, Movie Mail, Movie Challenge and Disney Movie Rewards Live) and the Pinocchio Knows Trivia Challenge game. The Blu-ray will also include a bonus version of the film on standard DVD. Great news indeed! Personally, we can't wait for The Lion King and The Jungle Book on Blu, but it'll probably be a few years.

not to hijack this thread, but i disagree about the software. i do all my music, podcast management on iTunes and the Zune syncs up to those specified folders. It's just easier that way, for me. i got my 30gb zune on black friday 2 years for $80. i still love it and having a hard time filling it up. ;)

Think of it as an over the air antennae that hooks into your PS3 that will allow you to watch and record (DVR) TV through your PS3. It's available in the UK right now. Wish we had it here. Anything you record goes into your Video section of your XMB. Awesome interface as well....

I remember one time walking in there, not being helped for about 15 minutes, and then spotting a TV that cost $1,800. The 3-year warranty on it was $589.
That, among many, many reasons, is why Circuit City is tanking.

Yeah, I can never find anyone to check me out when I go there. It is really disorganized. Also, if you brush of the sales person initally, they never come back.

Heheheh...that's funny. Sorry to hear you lost the bet.
I used to be a HUGE Niners fan back in the day. I remember my dad taking me to my first NFL game at Texas Stadium when they played against the first year Aikman, Smith, Irvin team (which I think went 1-16 that season). It was PURE heaven to see Montana, Craig, Rice, Taylor and Lott on the field. Living in Texas, that's not something you let out to most folks but boy were those fun times. Don't really follow teams anymore as much as the players so I'm rooting for Favre and the Jets this year.

Just making The Mummy Returns its very first Blu-ray release wasn't good enough for Universal -- oh no, it's releasing the entire triology on BD this winter. For those that held off on picking up the aforesaid title, you can opt for the 4-disc box set that will package all three Mummy films on BD and be released on the same day as The Mummy: The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (in solo form). Each film will be presented in widescreen 1080p with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track; currently, the MSRP for the collection is set at $94.98, though it'll be offered for much less on the streets come December 16th.

I watched Hulk today and not too bad. PQ was overall very good I'd give it a 8 maybe 9 out of 10 just because quality held up very good during busy hectic fight scenes. AQ was also very good, straight up 9 out of 10. I'd give it a 10 for audio but uncompressed is always better then DTS in my opinion.
As for the movie. I really liked it, just what a comic movie should be. A bit cheesy but action packed. I liked this version more then the first one but only cause the first one dragged too long in certain spots, but if you fast forward it's not that bad of a flick. Ed Norton IMO was much better as Bruce Banner then Bana was, Liv Tyler was also not bad ;).

Watched Ultraviolet last night.
Some really cool effects and visuals. I also thought PQ was great. Although it looked like Milla's face was intentionally blurred for effect.
The movie itself? I found it to be a dud. I usually love this stuff, but the action and dialogue were just a little too ridiculous for me. I mean, swarms of bad guys literally would just run into her sword. Made me roll my eyes a little, and I can usually tolerate just about anything.

Well I got the two Bond sets today at Best Buy. They ended up being $50 each...hell of a deal.
For those who don't know (can't remember if it was posted in the thread or not) the Magnolia rooms in Best Buy are giving out $10 off blu-ray coupons for a blu-ray demo. I asked about it at mine and the guy just gave me one. I found another one lying on the counter and used them both on the Bond sets.

Sarah Marshall more romantic comedy than, say, Knocked Up, which was a comedy with some romance thrown in. Sarah Marshall is pretty good for what it is, and for my wife and I it has some replay value....but it's definitely not even close to Knocked Up or Superbad or 40YO Virgin in terms of laugh out loud humor.

You've never seen Shawshank?! You sir are in for some EXCELLENT human drama. It's probably my favorite Frank Darabont film and certainly a crowning jewel in Tim Robbins' acting career imo. It's also based off a short story by Stephen King surprisingly.
Without spoiling anything for ya...it's a great story of the human spirit in the face of dire circumstances and not giving up.
There are definitely some scenes that will make you cringe though...they are rather brutal and uncomfortable to watch...but then again...what do you expect from a prison movie? (That's of course unless it's a women's prison :D )

Best Buy is putting some muscle behind its Blu-ray support. In addition to two double-page spreads touting Blu-ray titles in last weekend's newspaper inserts, the retailer has just rolled out an offer that's sure to pique the interest of anyone itching to dip their toe in the Blu-ray waters, particularly if they have kids. The retailer is currently selling the Insignia NS-BRDVD for $199, and, in a welcome twist, they're including a coupon book for $100 off on a selection of titles from Disney, Touchstone, and Miramax. No word on what those titles might be (if anyone picks one of these up, please email us the full details), but this does present an interesting opportunity.
According to the player's specs, it supports a variety of disc formats, is capable of 1080p upconversion via HDMI, and of course, it plays Blu-ray movies in all their high definition glory. Built-in decoders support Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD, and Dolby TrueHD sound. Outputs include HDMI, stereo audio, composite video, component video, digital optical audio, and digital coaxial audio. And oh yeah, it comes with a remote.
No details on how long this offer will last, but some of you may want to check it out now.

^ read that and IMO that is such a non story
as I've read the coupons are of the save $10 when you purchase 2 select title variety (with coupons repeating titles) plus the coupon book isn't exactly a new bundle in. There is little chance people will even use half of the coupons.
there is a huge difference between $100 in "coupons" and almost $150 in "product" being "given away" (5 free BDs)
prices coming down is good however

Personally, it shouldn't matter what the price of these SA players are. It should really only matter what the price of the PS3 is.
The SA players load so much slower, many aren't up to profile, some don't support DTS-HD, and they seem to all have problems playing some discs.
PS3 FTW.
IceRat
10-22-2008, 08:31 PM
yes the PS3 is the mack daddy of BD but you still need the low end crap to cater to the masses and give the appearance of a perceived value
then we will reap the benefits of more catalog and lower software prices

anyone thinking about picking up "Baraka" next week (and no it isn't about Obama)?
I had no knowledge of this film but it looks like it and the BD are getting rave reviews
The restored 2008 Blu-ray is the finest video disc I have ever viewed or ever imagined. ....
"Baraka" by itself is sufficient reason to acquire a Blu-ray player. Ebert
Is this a perfect Blu-ray? Is there such a thing? If not, the final result is as close as one could wish..........
Desirous of showing off your newest hardware to your friends?
Let them see one the great documentaries of all time concurrent with the feeding of your ego. Baraka is the new reference disc for the thinking videophile, a magnificent representation of the original cinematic Event on Blu-ray, and the most important documentary / Event film to make its way to Blu-ray since the system was born. RAH
Each scene provides awe-inspiring, reference-quality imagery that effortlessly places the viewer within each frame of the film regardless of its locale on the world's surface. It's a teleportation device of sorts, a trip around the globe that costs only as much as your HDTV, Blu-ray player, and the disc, and it's worth infinitely more than that. The level of detail is absolutely remarkable, almost too-good-to-be-true for home viewing -- and before now, it was. ............
There just aren't enough superlatives to discuss the visual power and prestige of this presentation. As stated before, it is the peak of home video imagery, and is another title that simply cries out for a large display. No matter the size of the screen, it will seem insignificant next to the majesty and scope of the film. ...............
This is Blu-ray at its current peak. There may be nothing better than Baraka, visually, available to the public today. Likewise, the lossless soundtrack is almost as remarkable. It completes the experience, revealing every sound, natural and musical, with pinpoint precision. Blu-ray.com
For adopters of this new format Baraka may have a current strangle-hold on being the most essential disc to own.

Congrats....NCState. According to Chugga, Dark City is a great movie. I haven't personally seen it myself.

So...finally after a couple of months I found Dark City! The female and I went to D.C. and of all places I found it at Borders (never been to one before) for 20 bucks, so now thats over with.
If you bought the dvd, you might return it if you haven't opened it yet, as I noticed Walmart has it for $13 (not blu though).

That sucks and also a 'lil weird. I've played over 250 HD DVD's and BD's on mine and the only one that didn't play was Sneakers, but it didn't play on anything I have. Man I must have been desperate for something to buy because I have no idea why I bought it in the first place.
Sorry to hear that in any case....
I saw an LG Superblue type disc drive for a PC today, there was no price and didn't want to track down a sales person but was intrigued.
White or blue box?

You give me enough concentrated Jennifer Connelly and I'll find anything to be good. Dude Where's My Car could have been a cinematic masterpiece if she helped find the car too.
Some crazy fanboy who wouldn't stop ranting and raving finally forced me into watching it and I'll say I wasn't disappointed. It's a great movie with or without Connelly. But significantly better given the fact she's in it. And should have been in the Dark Knight. Maggie Gyllenhall is ugly, but thats another debate for another day.

That the movie where her and some dude are locked up in a store overnight? I recall loving that movie when I was like 12-14 even though it wasn't very good, but I never understood why.
Now I do....

I have a 550, which I like. If you don't have a Harmony remote, but all means you should get this one. I would upgrade, but I'm satisfied enough with my 550.
