I almost bought an 880 when they were on sale earlier this year. I returned it, as I didn't think paying $100 to upgrade my current remote was worth it. I'm also not positive the charger will fit in the couch opening I would want to put it in.

Oh, I was under the impression you were supposed to leave it on the charger. It doesn't really do anything more than the 550 does though, correct?

Maybe I don't use it as much, but for me a full charge lasts at least a month.
And I dunno... never used the 550. lol.

question for you: how do you keep the profiles for both remotes? Whenever I try to add a 2nd remote, it only gives me the option to replace the 880.

Followed the FAQ on Logitech's site. :D
Told me to just create a User ID for each.
So I have HollandX and HollandX1.
My own spin on it is that I made the password the same for both. So since it remembers the User ID and Password each time, I just have to type or delete the "1" next to my stored User ID each time before I login to tell if I want upstairs or down. Since the password is the same I don't have to bother with it.
and just click login!

With an IR dongle (like $10), you can do everything but Power and Eject.
(Although the XMB does have an option to shutdown the PS3. So you can turn the PS3 off with your remote. You just can't turn it on.)

Owners of the Samsung BD-P2550 and BD-P2500 Blu-ray players awoke this morning to some happy news. With a simple update, their players can now stream Netflix movies at no extra charge!
Netflix account holders can visit the website to add standard definition movies and TV episodes to their instant queues. Those selections will then be available for viewing on their TVs via their Samsung players.

How so? You still have to get up to put in the disk right? :)
I thought it was going to be a pain too, but you get used to it after a while.
There are other third party options out there for turning the PS3 on and off, but they can be pricey.

I don't know - I'm in the habit of hitting 'Play PS3/Watch BD' on my 880, then turning on the PS3 with the PS button on my non-dualshock controller (why waste the battery in my Dualshock?), then getting up to change the disk. Seems silly to turn off that controller just to use the Nyko remote instead.

In your case, you should just skip hitting the PS button and go turn on the PS3 and then put in the movie. You are actually adding a step.
Sony really shuld have added an IR port to the PS3. It has almost everything else, so it is silly it doesn't have one. There must me some reason behind it, other than wanting to sell remotes.
I wish they would open up the bluetooth access as well. I'd much rather my various game periphials worked through bluetooth instead of 2.4GHZ. I get real tired of having tto plug/unplug 100 dongles from everything. Is there an issue with guitars, drums, and stuff not working over bluetooth or something?
Can someone link me to the remote that works with the PS3? I want to add that to my Christmas list.

There are a few of them now. And most will turn on/off the PS3.

I agree with this. I never really see the arguement for the remote turning something like the PS3 or a DVD player on. 99% of the time you have to get up and put the disc in anyway. Why not just turn it on then?

Along those lines, does anyone have the DirecTV HDDVR box (model HR-21)? I find it to be terribly slow. It takes forever to respond to the remote control and forever to do anything. Is there a way to speed it up?
Also, my NBC channels continue to be stupid soft. I hate watching them. Heroes and Knight Rider are just blurry whenever anything moves with a significant speed. HBO is a little soft as well, but never as bad as NBC.
In fact, I would rank the bluriness as Most to worst: Heroes, Knight Rider, True Blood

Are you using the remote that comes with the box or are you using your Harmony? If it's the Harmony, there's a way to speed up the send time from the remote.
I had the same problem with my 880 and the PS3... I decreased the time and now the PS3 is way more responsive. :)

The 720 is an okay receiver... definitely entry level and for those on a budget. I believe it's been as cheap as $199.
It will get the job done, there's no doubt about that, but if you can afford the extra $50 to $100, the Onkyo 606 is the better receiver.
And I too own the 720... the only reason I don't own the 606 is it's about $350 more in Canada than the 720.

Hmm, I think my 880 is done. I've charged it for hours and still can't get anything to show on the display, before that it was freezing up. I'd press something like "Watch TV" for an activity and it would show "Starting Activity... blah blah..." and just freeze up. Anyone had this problem before?
I bought it at Costco and have heard they're pretty good for this kind of thing so maybe they'll let me exchange it.

Yeah, the Onkyo is pretty nice receiver...question also...I have a friend who's tv is 1080p 120hz..but when he hooked his tv up via hdmi thru the receiver..it was almost like he lost the motion flow with the 120hz..not sure what receiver he has..but will either of these handle the 120hz? http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/#bluray_name
1.2
Why the name Blu-ray?
The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of "Blue" (blue-violet laser) and "Ray" (optical ray). According to the Blu-ray Disc Association the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake, the character "e" was intentionally left out so the term could be registered as a trademark.
The correct full name is Blu-ray Disc, not Blu-ray Disk (incorrect spelling)
The correct shortened name is Blu-ray, not Blu-Ray (incorrect capitalization) or Blue-ray (incorrect spelling)
The correct abbreviation is BD, not BR or BRD (wrong abbreviation)

A very skewed viewpoint.
See.....from my point of view...why would I sit there for hours waiting for an HD movie to download off of iTunes just to "rent" it. For rentals...the author speaks of "having to leave their house".....but I could leave my house...go to blockbuster...grab my movie....grab take out food...come home...eat food...take a crap....take a shower...and take a nap....all before my iTunes download was even 10% complete.

Why iTunes makes Blu-ray useless
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-10067855-17.html
Decent article, but it has way too much Apple slant to it. Apple TV has some issues last time I checked and the article just dismisses the fact that you might actually want to OWN an HD movie.
The cost of Apple TV is similar to some Blu-ray players now. It doesn't do 1080p and has limited HD space (40GB on some models) which means that buying HD movies won't be that simple. Nevermind the fact that Apple will come out with a new Apple TV every 2 - 3 years, forcing people to upgrade.
Plus it requires an Internet connection of some sort. Plenty of people still don't have broadband and/or don't have the know-how to hook something like this into their network.
The total cost of rental is cheaper if you rent multiple movies throughout the month via Blockbuster or Netflix as well. Plus, I can take as long as I want to watch the movie, not have 24 hours to see it.

I was trying to figure that out as well. My PC says it has a 100 Mbps connection, which is plenty fast, but my cable says it only has a 8Mbps connection. So I know I'm limited at some point, but I'm not sure where the bottleneck is. I'm also not positive those are all being measured on the same scale, even though they are stated in the same measurement.
That being said, if I had a 2Mbps connection and had to wait 2 hours for my HD movie to start, there isn't much point.

Yeah gaming/movies/football. It's not really much of a traditional home theater though. I have 2 couches and some emergency Bills bean bag chairs not pictured for sundays/ppv's. I can't really do the whole risers/stadium seating thing because if I have 4-5 people over on Sunday to watch football I don't want them sitting in rows staring at the back of each others heads if you know what I mean.

This guy is obviously just pushing some Apple agenda he has. Aside from what you already mentioned, I wonder if the HD audio would come along with the download, or any of the extra features, or digital copies (not that I use the last one, but some do.)
Plus the fact that you can't discount owning something over renting it, or even owning it in digital form. People want crap to display, to collect. Period.
Nobody ever presents both sides of the argument anymore. Another pseudo journalist failing miserably.

Just got done watching Iron Man and thought it was a pretty good movie. Really not big complaints other then Gwyneth Paltrow being the main squeeze. She really isnt attractive enough for my liking. I think the reporter Starks hooked up with in the beginning is much more attractive.
Other then that though I think it was a pretty good movie and cant wait to see the 2nd one. Once again Robert Downey Jr plays the role well. He is very underrated as an actor in my opinion. One of the best of my time I think.
Never was much of an Iron Man fan to be honest. Dont really rank Iron Man as a top super hero but this was a movie well worth watching.

Most games will work regardless what controller number you are. But if you get one that doesn't (I'm talking to you GTAIV and Resistance 2 Beta)... Hold the PS button on your remote. Go to controller settings. Go to assign controller number... Choose 1.
My controller always starts at like #5 or something because of my BluWave and my Rock Band instruments. But like I said, most games don't care.

I saw an ad in Target's weekly circulation today that caught my eye. It was for a blu-ray player (some off brand) for $229, and the description underneath read - "Also plays DVDs in high-definition."
Wow, that is taking quite a liberty with the language. I've always seen upcoverting machines described as presenting DVDs at "near HD quality" -- and even that is a stretch in my view, but this to me just seems like false advertising.

An 8K restoration is basically to have a VERY high quality digital transfer for the future. Film doesn't always store so well, so having a copy such as this should do them for BD and beyond for years to come.

Watched a few recently...
Primeval: What can I say about this one? It actually wasn't as horrible as I thought it would be. I mean, I finished it, so that says something. PQ was very, very good.
Point Break: Had never seen it. Love the movie now. PQ was pretty bad, or at least overwhelmingly flat. A few color pops here and there. Tons of nasty grain. This one hasn't aged so well. Keanu couldn't act back then, either.

IMO the author makes some very good points. This isn't VHS to DVD... the step from DVD to BD is much smaller. Companies can't employ the same wait and see strategy they did with the move to DVD.
I want to see BD become the next standard. Upconverted DVD just doesn't do it for me and I'm not patient enough to wait for a digital DL.

The article does make good points, although I see another article that mentions upconverting DVD players but says nothing of HD audio. But anyway....
FOX is probably single-handedly killing blu-ray. Obviously not FOX alone, but the $40 catalog titles with no extras is above and beyond the easiest thing to point to and say, "Blu-ray sure as hell isn't worth that."
If you see Dude, Where's My Car on DVD for $3 at Wal-Mart, and for $40 on blu-ray at Best Buy....that hurts the entire image of blu-ray in people's minds.

That graph is what blu-ray has done over blu-ray in that period....yes it's trending up. I think the argument is has it missed its opportunity to really break into the masses and become "the standard". If it's not the standard, it'll remain niche (by definition) and eventually lose support as all previous formats before it have.

Yeah that seems like a pretty stupid argument really. Give it some time. It might crash, but that is only because Sony is doing so poorly right now. Although what Japanese company isnt. As more and more people upgrade to HDtvs more and more people there will be more and more people buying blu-ray. One a few random people are going to buy a blu-ray player for a standard tv. It is rather pointless. It might never over take DVDs, but it will become bigger and bigger. The prices need to go down on players and discs before they can really take off.

Here's a sorta OT but sorta not since it has to do with receivers...
You know that little black wire that's packaged with a new receiver, used for connnecting to the FM input jack on the back to increase the FM signal... I can't find mine and my signal is really crapping out. Any idea what kind of wire that is; like could I just stick a stripped piece of speaker wire as a replacement or would my receiver like... explode or something?

I don't think disc price is that huge of an issue. When I walk into work tomorrow, I can see The Incredible Hulk on DVD at $27.99 and on BD at $29.99. Really, 2 bucks is not a huge difference, even in a volatile market place.

Bah, seems like these Blu-ray naysayers are really coming out of the woodwork now. That article was just as bad as the CNET one. All of them seem to focus on the price and how Blu-ray should be cheaper. Just how cheap is cheap? It's coming down in price... but give it time. I can go buy select catalogue titles for $13.99 and new releases for only a couple dollars more than the same DVD. That's not exactly raping the consumers wallet. And not ALL the players are "junk", some standalones are pretty damn good. A year ago the prices were pretty insane were they not?
Everybody wants everything dirt cheap thanks to Wal-Mart bargain bins and what's happening to the music industry... bah.

The difference in price, especially a catalog title, is much greater. And really, the first week of release you could've bought Hulk on DVD for $15.99 at Best Buy and $26.99 on blu-ray.
JaylisJayP
10-29-2008, 09:30 PM
I think another thing really hurting blu-ray is that people are just tired of waiting for all the big movies to come out. Yeah, we got Godfather 1 and 2 this year. So what, are we going to get 5 or less really big catalog titles a year?
Please, that's weak. All these studios now...all these crappy movies still being announced instead of the good stuff.

new releases for only a couple dollars more than the same DVD.
*note: the following depects Canadian pricing*
That's after the initial release... any savy shopper knows you can buy a new release DVD on the first day or even during the first week at a significant discount.
New release DVDs generally go for $19.99 or so on Tuesdays and sometimes throughout the week.
New release BDs are a completely different story. Most seem to hit in the $29.99 to $32.99 range depending on the store. Every so often one store might have a decent sale ($26.99) but those are few and far between.
I agree when the author says that new BD releases should be the SAME price as a new DVD release... this would help the format out tremendously IMO.

Sure it is... the internets have spread the word (the PS3 BD trojan horse has a lot to do with that as well). :)
IMO BD still has a pretty significant uphill battle. Outside the video files and HT nuts such as ourselves I'm not so sure the rest of the public have that much interest in Blu-ray at this point in time. And at the rate technology changes, it seems like the window for a new technology gets smaller and smaller as the years go by.

And at the rate technology changes, it seems like the window for a new technology gets smaller and smaller as the years go by.
It's just so funny to me, and it goes to show how stupid people really are, because they're buying up these HDTVs all over the place now, but.......how much of their experience with those TVs are really even in HD? Most people still think just owning the HDTV means they're watching HD.

I don't think disc price is that huge of an issue. When I walk into work tomorrow, I can see The Incredible Hulk on DVD at $27.99 and on BD at $29.99. Really, 2 bucks is not a huge difference, even in a volatile market place.
yeah, at my local walmart the 2 disc Hulk is 21.99 while the Blu Ray is $24.99....3 dollars more for the HD version.(i do not include the $13 version because that has no features which people wanting blu ray would expect). I don't mind paying $20-25 for Blu Ray if the movie is worth it(iron man, hulk, dark knight, hellboy 2!!) Then others i'll just buy used at my local game store that sells them for $10 used, $18 new(sad thing is they only get walmarts left overs so if walmart wants all the hulks, the game store won't have it for a few weeks if not months until walmart doesn't want any more copies...though they usually get most new dvds ans those are only $10 new!)

This add for HD in Canada sums it up perfectly for probably 50% of HD television owners.

Here's a sorta OT but sorta not since it has to do with receivers...
You know that little black wire that's packaged with a new receiver, used for connnecting to the FM input jack on the back to increase the FM signal... I can't find mine and my signal is really crapping out. Any idea what kind of wire that is; like could I just stick a stripped piece of speaker wire as a replacement or would my receiver like... explode or something?
yes a regular piece of speaker wire will serve the same purpose and should work just fine
Sure it is... the internets have spread the word (the PS3 BD trojan horse has a lot to do with that as well). :)

I don't disagree that there is a battle to be fought ... but the same battle needed to be fought in the transition from VHS to DVD ... it is a matter of educating people and letting them see the benefits (however small and large). The added obstacle is the addition of extra hardware upgrades (tv) and the muddying of the waters (720P, 1080i, 1080p) but like I said it is a "process" of education and even though dvd gave you better PQ than VHS, you couldn't fully take advantage of that if you were still using your old b&w 19" tv.

Honestly though, who still used a 19" B&W tv around 2001 when DVD hit it's stride? :p
It's the leap from DVD to BD that doesn't have a lot of people convinced... I personally think they're nuts (that or need better glasses). VHS to DVD was like night and day for me... DVD to BD (and HD DVD) has been more like sunrise to midmorning.

the argument to BD from DVD is harder to make since so many have so much money tied into their collections. With dvd we moved away from a rental model to an ownership model. Many don't want to replace that existing investment especially at the higher prices we see at the early stages of the format. BC must continue to be emphasised as well as noting dvd could/should see improvement in playing on a BD player in many cases.
Much like the cd, the growth of the format and the eventual affordability and ownership of a collection makes it difficult for many to want to transition to a new format/media.
