Silly? Now that's trivializing the work of Frank Miller a bit don't you think?
I can't think of anyone today that has written a better take on pulp noir than Mr. Miller...especially from books to film.

Serenity coming Dec 30th.
Well over two years ago, Universal hit a home run with its decision to release Serenity on HD DVD. Now, the studio is finally giving Blu-ray aficionados the privilege of buying the film, and it's even tossing in a few nice upgrades to boot. Given that this title would likely sell on Blu even without any extras, we appreciate the touchups. Those who take the plunge will be treated to a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track, a 2.35:1 1080p video transfer, BD-Live support and a whole slew of bonus features that can't all be listed in this space. Make sure you don't spend all of that holiday cash before December 25th, as you'll need $29.98 (MSRP) in order to snatch this one up on December 30th

Ugh. Sorry. I seriously don't even know where my brain is today.
Ok. What I MEANT was...
No matter what audio source I play (TrueHD, DTS-MA, PCM)... My receiver only and always says "PCM"... is that correct?
And then the D-word I was thinking of... My receiver always displays "Direct" on it. Because I don't use any of the post-processing. (ie THX-Cinema or Orchestra, etc.) Is that correct?
Ok, those are my real questions.
Thank you. :o

Yes, the PCM is correct. If your receiver isn't doing the decoding, it won't say the actual format of the audio.

You are going to need to get it repaired. My first PS3 did this. There is nothing you can do about it. The blu-ray loader is broken. This is the number one problem with PS3's and is actually becoming quite common. My disk drive burnt out in 3 months on my first system.

If it is out of warranty they will repair it for $150 and most of the time they will repair it anyway even if you do not have your receipt. However, I do not believe they will take back a system that was opened under any circumstances. They repair the systems that are sent back to them and sell than as refurbished units and I do not think they will do that with an opened unit. It would be fine to remove the hard drive as that is a feature, but beyond that you are probably totally out of luck. You can always call or try sending it in, but I would not expect anything. I'm only repeating what I've read from others experiences on the PS3 board. You could try posting over there for tips. Good luck!

Hankock was OK for me. I thought it was like 2 halves of a movie put together. I would have enjoyed it more if it was just the first half the entire time.
Watched Run Fatboy Run and Deception as well as the Strangers this weekend.
Run Fatboy Run was pretty decent. I like Simon Pegg alot so I might have found it funnier than others. Pretty standard comedy as far as plot goes. PQ was probably a 4. It looked fine, but being the type of movie it was, there wasn't really anything to make it pop. AQ was like a 3. Again, it sounded fine, but there wasn't anything spectacular about the audio.
Deception was not so good. Pretty bland movie and was basically a rerun of another movie that came out about 3 years ago. I don't want to say as it gives away the movie. PQ was a 4 again, as it looked nice but again, there isn't anything really special about it. AQ was also a 4. Some good music at parts and everything sounded fine. Just nothing spectacular.
If you like British comedy and Simon Pegg, RFR is a good movie for rental for sure and a nice pickup for cheap. Deception is a total pass. Not worth your time really. Strangers is OK, but in my opinion failed to deliver. Interesting concept, but I just never end up being scared.

Those are some memorable lines for sure. Yeah, I was out of the loop with this movie, but a friend recently recommended I watch it and I'm glad I did.
It had so many weird moments in the film, but the scene with Mena Suvari and him on the couch...as titillating as it was...I was more moved by what happened afterwards...totally caught off guard.
I'd hate to spoil the ending for anyone so be warned...
I'm assuming his narration was meant as a spiritual interpretation right? If he died and went to heaven then this was a self reflective story? That's what I got out of it. I also thought The Who song being played while he was jogging was quite poignant.
And last but not least...Thora's cans were SPECTACULAR!

The off the beat movie I watched this weekend was Juno. I never wanted to watch this movie but it was on an HD cable channel and I got sucked in. I actually thought it was VERY witty and quite funny.
Also did anyone catch Saving Private Ryan last night on TNTHD? It was a really bad HD transfer in my opinion but the Omaha beach landing battle was still great to watch. Blood and guts never looked so good. But there were a few times watching the movie I just could not stand how bad it looked. This is one movie I cannot wait for a really good blu ray transfer, the sound alone would be amazing.

I had that phobia of refurbs... if you think about it, refurbs have (or should have) been thoroughly looked over and in guaranteed working order. As long as they have the same warranty as a new item, I have no doubts about buying one. :)

Well, for me once you see it and take the whole movie in, it doesn't have the rewatchability factor that I need in a movie. I can't really say more without giving stuff away. It just doesn't hold up over multiple viewings to me. That said, it is a good movie.
Also, I just spent 30 minutes talking myself out of buying a new Home theater setup. It would be much easier if my old one would just break. I can't bring myself to shell out $500+ for something to replace an item that still works fine and gets the job done.

My computer was a floor model, but I would probably never buy a refurb.
Floor models are far worse to buy than refurbs. A refurb has been looked over by a technician and has replaced any of the non-working parts. Many refurbs were never broken in the first place. A floor model will typically all ready have several thousand hours of use before it is allowed to be put up for sale. They are also only put up for sale when they are discontinued or something is wrong with that that they would hinder the sale of the new products. You should never pay more than 10-25% of retail of the new discontinued price (not the original retail) for a floor model and expect to buy something else to replace it in a much shorter time frame than you would something new.

That's my stance on the topic, but his dad wouldn't be using the PS3 for anything other than Blu-ray. Not worth it, or sould he just splurge for the PS3?
JaylisJayP

It's not splurging, it's making a smart purchase. I'd pay twice as much for a PS3 than a would for a stand-alone blu-ray player.

^^^ If for no other reason than a bunch of discs (Bond movies of late) still don't even work on stand-alone blu-ray players, even with the latest firmware. SA players have slower load times, many aren't profile 2.0.
PS3 is the only way to go imo.

Well, I will agree with you there. After all I doubt floor model computers get a ton of use and really the only thing that you can typically "wear out" on a computer during a normal lifespan is a hard drive. Your other parts should still have manufacture warranties regardless if it were a floor model. So yeah I can really see where a floor model computer would be a different case than other electronics.

You will find everyone in here will tell you to get the PS3. It still remains the best Blu-ray player on the market because of compatability and ease of use. Most of the other profile 2.0 players seem to require an external memory source (SD card/USB stick) to use them and would need them for updates as well. They all also require a wired connection.
PS3 has a hard drive built in and can connect via wireless for updates. It will play pictures, music, and movies as well. This doesn't even account for all of the media streaming options or the online video store.

Doesn't it have to do more with how it interfaces with the server and the load on that server than the language itself? If I'm not mistaken, HDi is just the language used to author the DVD and make all the fancy menus.

Yeah, I just wonder if there have been more people hitting the Live servers than the HD-DVD servers. I mean the install base for the PS3 was way more than the HD-DVD install base ever was, so I assume they just have more people accessing it.
It is all just theory I guess. Regardless, I'd bet it won't work and I'd bet that whatever BD-Live feature TDK has on it will casue the Internet to explode.
The few times I've used BD-Live at this point it was terrible anyway. Just nothing fantastic offered for all the time and effort to access it.

from the production supervisor of the Police Certifiable concert BD
Our developer has a matrix of players, and I do some testing as well others involved in the project. Note that just because a particular player might handle something badly doesn't mean we can fix it. We adhere to Blu-ray spec at all times, and if a player has a particular egregious problem we generally notify the manufacturer of the issue and hope they can eventually fix it in a firmware update.
The Blu-ray spec is just that - a spec. It's up to each player manufacturer to interpret the spec and implement it in their players. There will be varying degrees of success from different manufacturers.
Of course it is impossible for us to test on every single Blu-ray hardware/firmware combination, and we can't test players that are in the pipeline and haven't been released when we go to replication. So we test on the most common hardware configurations and note any specific problem. The PS3 has become one of our reference players because there are a lot of them out there, and the firmware is relatively easy to update. We like to have a completely smooth playback on the PS3 which we can then use as a reference to other players that might experience problems.

You aren't a baller unless you own....
1. At least 2 epic movies - Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, 300, King Arthur, etc. At least 100 people have to die on camera. Weapons of choice would be sword or arrow.
2. At least 3 comic book movies - Batman Begins, Spiderman (1, 2, or 3), The Incredible Hulk (old or new), Iron Man, Hellboy (1 or 2), Daredevil, X-Men, Superman (everything but "Returns"), or even the animated DC or Marvel movies.
3. At least 3 animated movies - Monster House, Ratatouille, Cars, Wall-E, Open Season, Ice Age 1&2, Kung Fu Panda, etc. The more fur in the movie the better.
4. At least 2 purely fun movies - Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3, Transformers, Cloverfield, Harry Potter 1-5, Casino Royale, I Am Legend, etc.
5. At least 2 Boxed Sets - The Godfather Trilogy, Spiderman Trilogy, The Matrix Trilogy, Harry Potter Set, Planet Earth, Pirates of the Caribbean Set, Oceans 11-13
6. At least 2 flat out awesome movies - Man on Fire, The Lives of Others, Gone Baby Gone, Blade Runner, Sunshine, Big Fish, The Prestige, No Country for Old Men, The Fall, Pans Labyrinth, etc
If you don't meet the requirements above then as MTV Cribs would tell you, you simply aren't a baller. But theres still hope, black friday is right around the corner.

Specs for Friday the 13th BD:
Paramount has unveiled final specs for the Blu-ray release of 'Friday the 13th,' which will come to high-def with even more bonus features and Dolby TrueHD audio.
As previously reported, Paramount has set a February 3 blu-ray release for the slasher classic, timed to coincide with a new standard DVD re-issue (and to prime the pump for the upcoming theatrical remake).
Full specs are now in, with the film receiving a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p video and (thanks to newly-discovered audio elements) an English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround track. (Additional audio options include the original English Dolby 1.0 Mono, French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround dubs, and English, French and Spanish subtitles.)
Previously announced extras include audio Commentary by director Sean Cunningham, a suite of featurettes ( "Fresh Cuts: New Tales from Friday the 13th," "Man Behind the Legacy: Sean S. Cunningham," "Friday the 13th - Special Reunion," "Lost Tales from Camp Blood - Part 1") and the theatrical trailer. Newly announced are two additional featurettes, "The Friday the 13th Chronicles - Part 1" and "Secrets Galore Behind the Gore - Tom Savini on Part 1."
Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $29.99.

There Will Be Blood does count. Theres still hope for you being a baller. A man of your style and expertise should have the Godfather boxed set though. Theres no excuse for that. And should you decide to buy Spiderman 1 or 2 eventually those would count towards your comic book and boxed set quotas.
As for animated movies thats going to be difficult. Since you seem to like comic movies you could always go that route with animated movies. Justice League: The New Frontier is an awesome movie. The new Wolverine vs. Hulk that comes out in 09 looks great too.

King Kong on HD DVD (30 GB) was 188 minutes and barely fit without lossless audio (DD+ track)
IMO, they will be pushing it with a BD 50 to get the extended version to fit with a good video encode and lossless audio... on the plus side Warner/New Line has been using the VC-1 codec, so they'll have a much easier time fitting the movie than if they were encoding using AVC MPEG 4 (VC-1 tends to take up less space than AVC). I'd also expect a Dolby TruHD track rather than Uncompressed PCM or DTS-HD MA as I think it takes up less space as well.

I have no problem with the break. I take is a kind of intermission. :)

I'm guessing it would be 2 BD for the extended version of LOTR based on what Prime said about KK.

Blu-ray not dead yet....
While the "HD streaming rulez!one11!1!" bandwagon was quickly filling up after Netflix announced that it would be bringing such a service to the Xbox 360, the numbers just don't substantiate the claims that physical discs are doomed anytime soon. Sure, for the budding technophile, streaming is just the next great thing, but for the average joe / jane, the tried and true disc still holds a great deal of importance. A recent study by market research firm SmithGeiger found that out of over 2,000 surveyed, "HDTV owners familiar with Blu-ray favor the format over downloading and streaming by a margin of nearly 10-to-1, with about 70% of respondents citing the fact that there's a physical disc to keep as a key factor in their decision to buy Blu-ray." It also found that 96% of BD users were "familiar with downloading and streaming services, but that two-thirds believe watching a movie on Blu-ray is a better overall entertainment experience." Sure, BD has its flaws, but not having to re-rent an HD film after a remarkably short 24-hour window sure is nice, huh?

I thought about it, but I've never really watched many of the Bond films. I am currently staring at the page on Amazon though....I'm a sucker for a deal.

Just watched Mist from Netflix.
Oh man, that was a great movie. It pulled me in from the beginning til the end. It was more thrilling that I thought it'd be.
Also great video and audio. :D

Damn that Bond set for $65 is very tempting on Amazon Goldbox. Those movies are intriguing. Don't know how many times I would watch them or if they are any good or not.

I think I'm getting a Panny TH-50PZ800U for my parents for Christmas. They want an HDTV. Any opinions? Does anyone have it? How is the glare on it? I hear that can be an issue.
