I think I'm getting a Panny TH-50PZ800U for my parents for Christmas. They want an HDTV. Any opinions? Does anyone have it? How is the glare on it? I hear that can be an issue.

That model has the antireflective coat on it... it works very well IMO.

Yeah, I have a buddy that has the 58" TV, but I've only gotten to see it for about 15 minutes. Still it looked great in those 15 minutes.

Best part is I have a hookup on the price. I get it for about $800 less than the price on Panasonic's site.

Damn that Bond set for $65 is very tempting on Amazon Goldbox. Those movies are intriguing. Don't know how many times I would watch them or if they are any good or not.

Anyone here NOT seen Dark Knight yet? (other than me)

I missed the gold box deal. I would have been very tempted to pull the trigger on that one. I've always wanted to see the old Bond movies.

Picked up Incredible Hulk and Tenacious D: The Complete Masterworks 2 yesterday. BB has The D for $12.99. No tag, just rings up for that price.

Now time to decide if I'm gonna get Tropic Thunder this week. Definitely buying Wall E.

You should do it again on there. You can tag titles you own that you consider "for sale" or "for trade". If all of it did that on here we could search each other's collections for possible sales or trades.

That Samsung is the highest rated Plasma set, better than the Panasonics according to most reviews but not by much.
The other problem with that deal is that almost everyone is out of 360's.

Is it true that when upgrading from a standard tv to a WS or HDTV that you should double the size to make up for the difference you are losing from top to bottom as they are wider but not as tall ??

For instance if I have a standard say 19" then I should look for a 37" WS or HD set ?

no wonder circiut city is failing...they had MK vs DC in today's add for $49 and it even said "available today", so i figured i'd give them a chance. i went in and didn't see it, so i tracked someone down and he said they were back at customer service...he grabbed a copy for me and it wouldn't ring up. he looked at me and said, "well it's not in the system so i can't sell it to tou." i then told him to grab today's flyer and a manager...the manager came over(wearing a pink tony romo jersey) and tells me the same thing, but she says they can hold it for me until tuesday(when she assumes it will be in the system. i tell her no thank you and ask to take the add with me and promptly go to best buy and have them price match it...not a problem. it's what i should have done in the 1st place...

All TV inch sizes are measured diagonally - so I'm pretty sure you're getting the same surface area, it's just going to look different because it's not as high.

That said, I do tend to think a 32" widescreen seems smaller than my old 32" tube - but that might just be me.

Anyway, here's my advice. Whatever size of TV you're thinking of getting, go 8" larger. You'll thank me.

Fry's does me no good...wish it did.

I think I'm done waiting for the ads. They've all sucked so far, and not just for blu-rays. There's zero chance we'll get a B2G1 or anything like that at these stores, they'll throw out a $5 or $7 discount off select titles that I could get for that price today at Amazon or ebay.

Here's a big middle finger to the brick and mortar stores. :D

I'll let you know tomorrow when I watch it. Had the DVD and I let someone borrow it, now its missing. I figured what the heck, filler for my collection.

This was enough to keep me away from it. From DVDtalk.com

Video
Arriving in a 1080p, AVC/MPEG-4 Encoded, 2:35:1 Widescreen Aspect Ratio, Kiss of the Dragon, unfortunately I might add, marks the first real disappointing Fox Blu-Ray title.
The problem I had here is that so much of the transfer felt like a SD-DVD transfer. Detail is horrendous with so many areas requiring the viewer to either squint or simply not try to see what's going on. The lighting effects were soft and dark (as are the locales), never giving the viewer any assistance what so ever. Resolution is also another problem here, as Kiss of the Dragon never has that HD type transfer that we expect. This was extremely odd too because the first 10-15 minutes actually looked pretty damn good.
Color usage was severely affected by the aforementioned lighting issues. Colors were never bright, clear or easy to consistently make out. A majority of the sequences were gloomy and drab looking, possibly which was done on purpose. This was quite the odd choice Fox decided on as part of their initial wave of titles, as Kiss of the Dragon never fully looks impressive.

And from High-def digest....

The Video: Sizing Up the Picture

Presented in 1080p with the MPEG-2 codec, 'Kiss of the Dragon' is a visual mess. This is the first time I've ever seen such a thing, but the standard-def edition of this film has a higher quality print that's shockingly more stable.
The first thing you'll notice on this high definition transfer is that there is a green sheen overlayed across the entire palette of the film. This one was so bad that it sent me bounding behind my HDTV to make sure something wasn't wrong with my setup. The green haze bleaches explosions into dull yellow flames, transforms skin tones into flat and sickly plastic, and mucks up outdoor scenes with pale skies and repulsively unnatural plant life. Once you get used to 'Kiss of the Dragon' taking residence with Agent Smith inside the matrix, you'll find yourself distracted by the dirt, scratches, and white speckles that haunt your screen. More vibrant than the film itself, these blemishes appear en masse in the surveillance room during the hotel assassination scene, in the inspector's car during a chase into a French tunnel, in the skies of almost every wide shot of Paris, and -- most distinctly -- during the scene in which Jian is threatened by Jessica's pimp. Keep peering through the thin veil of salt and pepper as Jian battles this shirtless fighter and you may even catch image trails on his arms and legs that cause the entire image to stutter.
As you work to ignore the substandard print, you'll notice the inconsistent contrast levels throughout the movie, sometimes from shot to shot. Take note of the bright walls when Jian is attacked in the bathroom near the beginning of the movie -- you can clearly see the transfer is unable to stabilize the shot's brightness and it produces an effect similar to the fluttering you see when staring at a florescent light bulb.
Worst of all, the transfer exhibits washed out colors, a softness that eliminates fine detail, and the visual quality of an eighties flick at best. This is best exemplified by the hospital scene where Jian has a conversation with an injured Jessica -- the image is so flat that all dimension is lost and nothing on the screen attracts your attention. There are rare instances of nice color saturation, such as Jessica's red leather coat in Chinatown, but moments later, pools of blood are dull and practically black. Overall, my experience watching 'Kiss of the Dragon' on Blu-ray was reminiscent of going to the dollar theater when I was in high school and watching a tattered print that had already made its rounds at more prominent theaters in the area. It's that bad.

But then again, DVDTown gave it a 9/10 for PQ, so go figure.

Goes to show the reviewers are so all over the map you can't trust any of them.

Hell, I am not even in a major center and I don't expect it to last till 5pm. I don't see a limit happening, as we talked about it when Indy got released. The way we look at it is, either you buy 5 once or 1 five times.

You could very easily get a remote and a controller on your own for $88. Much cheaper in fact, if you wait until Black Friday. In my opinion the remote is worthless, as you can use the controller or buy the NYKO remote and then use a Harmony.

If you could take the games and movies back seperately, I suppose you would make out on the deal as you would get like $20 for each movie and probably at least $20 for each game. That would get you like $40 in free cash at Wal-Mart, but that assumes you could take them back.

Not sure it is worth all the effort for the possiblity of gaining $40.

What is a BluCube?

A BluCube is a giant cube of 20 movies all from that one crappy studio that puts out those $11 Blu-rays but no one buys them. Well in an effort to move them to the movie whjores they packed all 20 of their releases into a giant "cube" and are charging an MSRP of $149.99 for 20 movies. If some studio can afford blu-ray discs and packaging for crap like this, then it isn't too expensive to make blu-rays.

Wanted to amend that and say that Beer League isn't crap.

I wouldn't buy that **** if it was $20.

I'd rather get one movie for $20....and get one that I'll enjoy and watch multiple times instead of 20 really crappy movies that I'll never watch. And even if I did....I would have wished that I didn't.

MY cousin just bought a 42" Visio Plasma from WM. He isnt tech savy. How does he go about breaking in his TV and what type of settings should he use. I asked on Avsforum but they are kinda pr cks over there.

1. Take it off torch mode (vivid) and turn all other settings down to Zero
2. Set the tv to fill mode. this will stretch any 4:3 content to fill the screen, but still show 16:9 and larger ok.

Leave it like that for about 100 hours of regular viewing and then he can turn up the settings again (although don't turn on the vivid or bright setting again). As long as he switches up his content and doesn't leave any static image on for any length of time, his set will be fine. I also recommend leaving the set on fill if he will watch a lot of 4:3 SD stuff.

Some will tell you to use a breakin disk... personally, I think it's a waste of 100 hours of the tv's life.

Others will also tell you that you really don't need to break in a plasma. I figure for the price you pay, 100 hours isn't a long time to wait.

And tell him not to worry if he does see a little image retention from time to time... it will go away after viewing something else. :)

Use a universal remote on it and see if that makes a difference. That way you can isolate if it is the remote or the receiver.

Have you added anything electronic to the room? Could be interferring with the signal. Move the receiver to a different room and see if you can turn it on and adjust settings. Doesn't have to actually make sound.

I had a Kenwood that had this same issue and it was broken. Basically something inside was loose and just eventually fell off. I sent it away to get fixed and got it back in about 2 weeks. Cost around $65 I think.

It will depend on what you're used to.

I had a pretty decent set up to begin with so I don't always notice a huge jump in any lossless track... yeah, there are movies where the sound is noticeably better lossless than lossy (ID4, Cloverfield and Kill Bill all jump to mind), but there are others I have yet to be able to tell if it was really an upgrade or not.

If you started with a crappy little HTIB and upgraded to a good receiver and a set of good 5.1 or 7.1 speakers, I think you'll notice a much larger difference between lossy and lossless sound.

And ewto, did you go to the Jackets game last night? :D ;)

I have a Kenwood HTIB that I bought from Sam's Club about 8 years ago. It does Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1. I use the speakers it came with. The setup seems fine to me, but I don't have anything to really compare it to.

No, I didn't make it to the Jackets game last night, but I heard the Oilers pasted them. The Jackets suck so bad. The city is really losing interest in them because they can't get their crap together.

Is there really any reason why I shouldn't buy a refurbished Onkyo HTS7100 for $430.10 shipped? Really, please, I need a reason to not buy it. The best I have is that my home theater system still works so I don't REALLY need to replace it.

Someone help.

A quick bit of reading says the 7100 is the 606... unless you really need the speakers, you could probably watch for a 606 deal instead.

Terrific price though. :)

A refurbished 606 is $349, which I could just buy a new one for around the same amount. I have yet to see a 606 for less that $325 at any point.

I guess I don't need the speakers, though I would like the matching ones that go with the system versus keeping the Kenwood ones, and I would have the 7.1 speakers as opposed to the 5.1 if I ever went to that.

So for less than $100 I'm getting the speakers.

So far you aren't helping much as far as making me not buy it. ;) :p

I'm not spending more than $15 per Bourne movie. They're catalog titles that have already been out in a hi def format.

So when the MSRP drops to $60, call me.

I need to get a Universal remote anyway, so I'll go that route first. Haven't added anything electronic recently. If I have to get it fixed again, it's completely covered under warranty, it's just a pain in the ass.

I have this problem all the time with my 720 and my Harmony 880... the Sony is just a cheap POS unit that I can't wait to replace oneday soon. If Christmas wasn't coming, I would have bought a 705 last night on clearance.

Sounds like it might be the unit itself, then.

+1... $50 shipped from Amazon.com I believe :)

The sound is already pretty amazing on these disks, so I doubt I'll upgrade just for lossless on 2 of the 3 movies (Ultimatum has a TruHD track on the HD DVD).

Agreed...HD DVDs on these are great.

I think his point was that plenty of people would be selling it for less than MSRP. I don't think any of us buy BDs at MSRP.

I love the films so much that I will NOT pay that much for them, that's insane. That has to be a typo.

Agreed, that's $40 each.

I can see it priced at $80 for the trilogy.

Not double dipping on Bourne. The HDs are fine.

$40 MSRP each is standard for new Universal BD releases (day and date or catalogue).

The set will be $90ish at most good online retailers... perhaps even less if there's a decent sale at some point. :)

If you don't own them on HD DVD, it will be a terrific set to pick up at the right price.

Hey you guys are getting better. First it was "the DVD's are good enough". Now "the HD DVD's are good enough". Maybe one day you'll get to the point where you want the best quality for your movie collection. :p

Did anyone find Southland Tales yesterday and if so what store? It was the movie I was looking forward to most this week and I can't find it anywhere.
