Did anyone find Southland Tales yesterday and if so what store? It was the movie I was looking forward to most this week and I can't find it anywhere.

As I peeked down the Blu aisle of my Best Buy I saw The Rock's face from the cover so we had at least 1 copy

Weird I didn't see it there yesterday (or a price tag) and then to top it off I go home to do the "instore pickup" option thinking maybe I'll outsmart the system and maybe they have some in the back, but there wasn't a best buy in a 50 mile radius that had it.

Hey you guys are getting better. First it was "the DVD's are good enough". Now "the HD DVD's are good enough". Maybe one day you'll get to the point where you want the best quality for your movie collection. :p

Maybe once the economy gets better we can all worry about having the immaculate collection for our home theaters. Right now, I'm far more worried about bigger things then what color case my movie has.

Even the set at $60 -$70 is too much. Like I said in another thread I will either get it from my guy or get it used. I know SBrooks1 will get it day one:D

Yes it's, especially for $85.

I have two polk r300's for my fronts and they sound great. The bass is loud and tight. I'd buy this right now but I'm afraid it won't fit into my top shelf, check out CC's specs. This is a monster and weights 17 lbs!

I was going to buy that as well, but I'm afraid it will unbalance the rest of my system. I'd feel like I needed to get the rest of the speakers to match, which then costs like $400.

If there's a Fry's near you, they always have the tower speakers on sale. I bought my R300's for $80/pair. The R50's were about $120/pair but I returned it because I thought the R300's sounded better.

You don't have to buy all of them at once. That's how I justify my home theatre budget :D

Hey all, if I'm getting a Harmony, is the 880 the way to go? Amazon has the refurbs for $75.

I have a 550 that I like, but it probably costs about the same about as a refrub 880. I know I saw some Harmony remotes on sale in the Black Friday ads, if you want to wait.

I did buy my father in law an 880 recently as the 6something he had was eating batteries left and right.

My 550 doesn't eat batteries. I think I've replaced them 2-3 times in over a year.

Well, the receiver remote works much better now...I had to turn the unit so it was directly facing me when I was using the remote. Kind of a pain, but at least it works again.

I think I saw the ads, too, and if I remember, it's basically a Black Friday discount from a Best Buy or Circuit City equates to the same price I could get on ebay now, or still more expensive. But I'll give them one more look, I definitely don't need the remote tonight.

I also see from reviews that the 880's buttons don't light up? That kinda sucks.

JaylisJayP

Yeah, I just looked at the Black Friday ads...Circuit City's 880 for $99. Best Buy's 550 for $60.

I don't really like the feel or look of the 520, 550....

I never actually used the 880 to know if the buttons lit up or not. All the buttons on my 550 light up when you move it or hit the glow button.

What about the Harmony One?

I must admit I'm baffled that you don't have a universal remote already. I thought that was another one of the requirements for being in the thread. :p

I did but it ate the tile floor too many times. Something I will not make the same mistake with again....but now I need a replacement.

I had something like a 679 or one of those that came free with my Panasonic plasma from Vanns.com.

I guess you have to choose between light up buttons or the look of it then. The 880 and the 550 are the two main ones that are under or around $80.

I unloaded my Wii today and bought a bunch of PS3 games for the money. Felt good to get rid of that paperweight and free up some space on the shelf. Plus... it's white, it looks so much cooler having almost all black components. Let it be known from this day forth there will be no non-black components on my shelf (not including satellite receiver, I can't help that).

The new 605s are rumored to be black when they arrive (don't know when)... the crappy part is HD subs will be forced to upgrade when Starchoice goes to MPEG4 in the future. I have 3 505s now so that's going to hurt. :(

They've kicked the crap out of my old 628 now... they even managed to rip a button off. Not to meantion the dog like to chew on it at one point.

But if I can find a Harmony One for $99 this holiday season, I'm all over that like ewto on a wii :D

Watched The Kingdom again on HD DVD...first time I've used my HD DVD player in about 2 months. Forgot how long it took the A2 to load up. Wanted to test the audio since it was the topic of discussion a few weeks ago, and I was actually fairly pleased. I had the volume up to a decent level, but it was pretty crisp and clear for dolby surround. I have no doubt the blu-ray's DTS-MA will be superior, but in my opinion the HD DVD's audio is no slouch as far as lossy is concerned.

Cool, thanks for the link. It'd be between this and a cheaper one like the 676...watching one of those on ebay now. If I can get it for under $35, I'll go that route instead for now. I have one young kid and another one on the way, I shutter to think what they'd do to one of these. $35 is a lot easier to eat than $100.

Really? I hope that doesn't happen anytime soon (although black would be awesome) because I've only owned mine for a few months. If we're forced to upgrade maybe *choice will offer some sort of trade up program.

I know this doesnt belong here but theres lots of knowledgeable Tech guys here,
Anyway of fixing a DTV(dvr) receiver thats gone haywire?? Mine went out last week and i had to order another card for an old receiver(lucky i kept it :D) i still had.

All it does is make beeping sound i assume from the harddrive and the power and record lights flash back and forth. I unplug it and replug and it gives me "its installing" screen and then it shuts off.

Once NFL is over im done with DTV and was thinking about giving that receiver to my brother.

I thought the character was great....a perfect spoof of the big money types in Hollywood.....with his huge gold dollar sign bling.

I couldn't get past it being him. I think if that character was anyone else, it wouldn't be as funny. I thought a big chunk of the humor came from him playing someone like that.

Hello all. I've finally taken the plunge into Blu waters. I purchased the Sony BDP-S550 along with 4 free Blu's and Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk..Love the player so far although I am a staunch HD-DVD supporter I had to go Blu in order to take advantage of what my TV had to offer..Now that aside. I purchsed this player also because it can pass the HD audio through my older 7.1 Yamaha receiver. My question is this my receiver has pre out jacks on the back if I connect the pre out on the Blu player to the pre out on the receiver along with HDMI running from the TV to the player for video of course will I get the HD audio decoded? For now I am using optical for sound and watched Iron Man and the audio was good I had it at 35. But for The Incredible Hulk the DTS was considerably louder and clear and I had it at 40. Should I just stick to the optical set up? Or try the other way? I really don't want to buy another receiver now. Thanks for listening.

Congrats on the purchase james. :)

Unfortunitely, the 550 only decodes Dolby TruHD. Therefor any DTS-HD Master Audio movies you won't be able to take advantage of the lossless audio.

I'd still leave it connected via the 7.1 analogue outs... hopefully Sony adds DTS-HD MA via a firmware update at some point. At least then you can enjoy TruHD and uncompressed PCM lossless audio. :)

I have to say this Netflix integration on the 360 is really cool. From all the classic 80's and 90's movies I've missed watching. To the HD episode seasons of The Office and 30 Rock and Heroes. To the entire 3 hour Grindhouse movie being on there with previews. This is great and will keep me interested for a long time. :D

Buying a Blu-ray player that doesn't decode DTS-HD MA is just.......wrong. It's like a PB and J without the J. It's like ham but no burger. It just....does....not compute.

It doesn't matter if your blu-ray player decodes the HD audio formats or not (which yours doesn't for DTS HD-MA)....you won't get any HD audio through an optical cable regardless.

You need to use an HDMI cable for any type of HD audio.

And...you should've bought a PS3.

I would recommend HDDB.net. It's a fairly all-inclusive database of blu-ray movies, with a list of every site they've been reviewed by. But sometimes they don't catch them all....

Individual sites are.

Highdefdigest.com
DVDtown.com
DVDTalk.com
DVDAuthority.com
Avsforum.com
blu-ray.com
dvdbeaver.com
and themanroom.com changed it's name to something else, but I can't think of it right now

I wouldn't necessarily go by these sites for reviews on the movies themselves...they're better sources of information for the technical specs of the blu-ray discs. You'd be better off sticking to rotten tomatoes for movie reviews.

At avsforum.com, in the blu-ray software section, they maintain a Picture Quality tier thread, where everyone's input is weighed and they structure a hierarchy of picture quality. Debatable as to whether it's any more accurate or reliable than a review site's take on a disc, but it is another source for you.

Anyway, watched Can't Hardly Wait today while cooking. Decent PQ, not very sharp. Audio was pretty strong, though. When used, the surround sound was great.

Picked up a Sony BDPS350 BD player today for my Dad for Christmas. Came with 3 free movies (Devil Wears Prada, I Am Robot, Kingdom of Heaven.) I'll give it a quick test run as I play to run the firmware update before I give it to him.

I also spotted the Insignia player for $149.99 at Futureshop... might have only been that store that had them on special, but it also included the 3 free movies. I was damn tempted to buy one as they have come pretty highly recommened (Insignia is the same as the Magnavox player) but the from isn't much to look at.

Sorry, I didn't mean the actual movie, but the overall grade of the BD. I notuced things like Casino Royale and Gans of New York were only getting 3's on things like picture quality.:o

Many blu-ray fanboys will to this day say High Def Digest (Peter Bracke especially) has a vendetta against blu-ray. I don't see it, but....anyway....

Here's a couple things to keep in mind with these review sites.

1) They will pick apart these movies in so much more depth than you would ever need them to. Meaning they're pausing the movie, getting within inches from the screen, docking points for a dirt spec here, a tad of edge enhancement there...it's so far beyond anything you as a typical movie enthusiast would care about. My point there is that the different between a 3.5/5 and a 4.5/5 on these review sites is, in my opinion, a difference you wouldn't even notice at home.

2) Oftentimes they'll make unfair comparisons, although they're getting better. Meaning they'll judge a movie based on it's age against newer movies...or they'll even judge a live action movie against a CGI cartoon like Wall-E or something. So one reviewer might have just given Wall-E a 5/5 for PQ, and then reviewed, say, Gattaca, and be influenced a little bit by what he just finished watching, and allow that to affect how he judges Gattaca.

3) These review sites only get business when you keep coming back. So every once in a while they need to generate some controversy to keep the buzz coming to their Web site. A conspiracy theory of mine? Maybe a little one, sure, but many other people would agree with me there.

So, basically, the only way you'll really know is to rent and see for yourself. If you're going to go off reviews, though, I'd recommend looking at as many as possible, including user reviews on blu-ray.com and avsforum.com, and look for common themes. If a lot of people are unhappy with certain visual aspects of a movie, odds are it's true, and you might be unhappy, as well.

But, with maybe a handful of exceptions, any blu-ray is going to be at least a couple siginificant steps up from what you'd get off a DVD. And the jump in audio quality is often greater than picture quality, if you care about that, as well. If you are a fan of a movie and want to own it, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the blu-ray.

The only thing I really ever let PQ dictate is how much I'd pay for the film. If it's only a small or medium step up from a DVD, or if there's no HD audio, then I'm only going to pay a small or medium amount more for the blu-ray....something FOX hasn't seemed to learn yet.

No problem...also, my two cents on the ones you mentioned.

Casino Royale looks spectacular. It is one of the premier blu-rays you can buy.

I have heard Gangs of New York has a ton of edge enhancement ported over from the DVD transfer. I haven't seen it myself, and depending on your TV, it'll be more or less noticeable...but just something to keep in mind.

It's pretty good for the price range, just be aware that it is entry level. The receiver won't decode lossless codecs so if he buys a Blu-ray player in the future he'll need to get one that will decode TruHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

According to some reviews, the subwoofer is underpowered as well. Depending on where he lives, that may be a good thing.

I'm over 30 myself but as great as this 3-D trend of animation is, I miss the ol' traditional 2-D animation which has sadly gone extinct.

Quite frankly, it's a little disturbing to me, as Japan is the only country which still respects 2-D with the blending of the two.

Quality wise, it seems like Panny and Sammy plasmas are pretty neck and neck (Samsung may have even pulled ahead). The Sammys appears to be available for a little less on sale from what I've seen as well.

Customer service tends to be better with Panasonic (their Viera Concierge service is second to none). And unless Samsung has improved on the burn-in front, the Pannys are more resistant to it.

-Cool cast and characters (Madsen - who easily has the coolest character... The Gent, Jones, Carradine, Hopper).
-Behind the scenes were kinda cool, I liked watching "The Choppers of Hell Ride" although none of the extras are more than a few minutes long each.

Con's
-Really, really cheezy at times but that's to be somewhat expected in a movie like this.
-The writer/director is also a lead and that rarely works, didn't work here either.
-Slow and not much action.

So although it wasn't that great I have no regrets buying because I know I'll want to watch it a few more times anyway (Something about naked women and bikes :D)

Good price for this TV? If so, I think I have found my box:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=A1977316&cs=19&c=us&l=en&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643

I would look at the Black Friday ads and see what TVs are listed there. I recall seeing some Samsungs listed around that same price that might be better.

The PS3 deal on the credit card is a great deal. Like IceRat said, buy it, pay it off in full, and then cut the card up and never use it again.

Oaktown kept his open and uses it to buy Sony stuff and he has accumulated a lot of Sony points so far. If you plan on buying more Sony electronics in the future, you may not want to cut it up.

Alright. I just saw that when I buy a PS3, I get five free Sony Blu-Rays, and then an additional 28,000 points, so Zing on that one.

Is anyone being big and brave and hitting the Black Friday specials, specifically at Best Buy?

I'd dearly love a copy of Transformers on Blu-ray ($9.99) should anyone manage an extra copy. :)

If there were like a bin of $9.99 blu-ray movies Primebane it would be a totally different story. I'd karate chop the soccer moms in the face, I'd roundhouse kick the kids they brought with them, and I'd hurl shopping carts at any husband who unwillingly got talked into going. All of my knowledge of kung fu would be on display for anyone who even looked at me wrong at the entrance.

But a door buster deal one a SINGLE movie. It's not worth working up the sweat.

:spawnorb:

Southland Tales (not on sale just couldn't find it), Courage Under Fire, Windtalkers, freedom writers, the untouchables, master and commander, commando, black rain.

Ok so maybe no cinematic masterpieces, but they were like $9.99. Of those movies I've only seen Commando though so the rest could possibly be great. But I'm not holding my breath

I can tell you ahead of time...Black Rain is far from great. Windtalkers is meh. The Untouchables is worth the $9.99. If you ever watch M&C more then once...your life really has no meaning. Freedom Writers....dunno...never seen it. Courage Under Fire was worth the $9.99. Southland tales.....again...I dunno....never seen it. Commando.....after re-visiting it....you'll question your own movie tastes and ask yourself..."damn...at a point in my life.....I thought this was good"????

Truthfully I haven't LOL'd since this sunday when I saw Randy Moss get away with killing on camera. Luckily Dolphins aren't an endangered species or else he'd be facing some major jail time.

I'll also be laughing out loud when the Bills face off against the Dolphins again, and we show Canada how NFL teams shut down high school offenses. I hope you're around that day, I have every plan of rubbing it in. I want you near a computer when Trent Edwards starts kneeling at the end of the 4th.

You will not take 2 games from us this season, that is a promise and a guarentee. Screw Chad Pennington

I know this is probably splitting hairs here, but the fact that Peter Bracke gave The Dark Knight an overall "recommended" instead of a "highly recommended" makes me seriously question how much attention I'll pay to high-def digest reviews in the future.

It's not the first time a review of theirs has been off just to stir up contraversy and add some traffic to the site. You can tell it's fake as hell because they absolutely loved Batman Begins but somehow hate it's impressively superior sequel?

Peter Bracke is usually pretty spot on, and I generally agree with him but I feel like this was just a play to differentiate their site from the rest of the reviewers out there. I still go by a combo of HDD/Rottentomatoes anyways. The other reviewers at HDD can be highly biased, so you need rottentomatoes.

Yeah, I guess it can be slow. I love the genre, though. It's also at least worth a rental to show off what I'd consider one of the top 5 audio discs available right now.
