Question for you guys. I'm looking at getting a new tv soon and the largest I can go is 32" , I saw that sharp has a 32" 1080p for $1,400. Do you guys think that is a good deal or is there something better out there.

At 32" you probably won't notice a huge difference between 1080p and 720p... but check it out for yourself in store if possible. You'll probably save a few hundred bucks going 720p.
Sharp makes a very nice LCD so you normally can't go wrong with them. :)

I'm the same way, NO ONE around here was carrying Hellboy. Only place that finally had it was FYE so that kinda sucks for you with yours not carrying any. I suppose you could call them back and see if they are finally carrying Blu-Rays....I kept getting no no no no no forever and then one day I show up and they have 20 disks sitting out.
Well, I decided to triple check all the closest Best Buys...since their site showed none having them, and all of them I had called or looked in didn't have it. Finally found a store that has ONE copy that they're holding until my lunch break. Same thing happened with Big Fish for some reason. Only one BB in town had ONE copy for the first month or so that the movie was supposed to be out.

No reason to spend the extra money for 1080p for a size that small. You can get an excellent 720p TV for much less and you won't notice any dropoff in quality from 1080p TVs.
Sharp is a great brand. Also check out Pioneer, Panasonic, and Hitachi.
Good luck!

Meant to tell y'all. I've been researching new HDTVs. I decided on a new DLP for my lil movie room. But I couldn't decide between the 56" and 61". For MONTHS i internally debated about this. Read every avsforum thread, checked out every formula. Sat in Circuit City and Best Buy. Finally on Memorial Day, the sales and no interest financing offers forced me to make a decision. So i took my 360 and Burnout Revenge to Circuit City to play on the 61". I wanted to see if I got dizzy or was sitting too close to a TV that size or anything. I measured out my exact distance seated. It must have taken a LONG 7-8 minutes to hook up. I was REALLY nervous. CC emps looked over but nobody said anything. So i'm playin Burnout, and it's AWESOME. I had the volume real low and only planned on playing 5-10 minutes at MOST to get a feel for it. Finally after a few minutes a CC emp walks up to me.
"WHO DID THIS FOR YOU?"
"me.. uh.. that's my xbox 360"
"THAT'S YOURS?"
"yeah... don't worry, i'll put it all back to the way it was in a few minutes."
"WE DON'T ALLOW THIS. YOU MUST TURN IT OFF NOW."
"oh.. uh... ok... sorry."
And i went to Best Buy and bought the TV.
He never asked if I needed help, or what I was doing, or why, or anything. Just demanded I turn it off.

It's no surprise why Circuit City is closing stores left and right while Best Buy continues to grow. I'm working part time evenings at Best Buy and it's great.

I probably could/should have. but i didn't want to hear "no." because then *I* was SOL in making my decision on a really expensive TV. i'd rather it have gone down this way if they were going to tell me no.
If I didn't know how to hook it up and switch inputs, I would have asked for sure. But all of us in this thread probably know more about this stuff than them. I wasn't going to hurt anything. If anything, I'd calibrate it better. LOL.
Dude coulda asked me what I was doing. I'm in CC/BB ALL the freakin time, and I've never seen anyone bring their own 360. The power brick alone weighs more than an elephant. I musta had serious business to lug that thing in. Plus I was with my parents. I don't think they chose to spend their holiday with me to play video games in CC in the middle of the afternoon.

That's why I recommend everyone view the tvs for themselves. I know people that swear by their DLP, whereas I look at them with a plasma side by side and the store and see a HUGE difference.
People seem to view these tvs differently and thus as long as the tv looks good to the buyer, that's all that really matters. :)

i hear you on this...but i've had my DLP 2 years and only had to replace it once, and that one was covered under warranty so it didn't cost me anything. Plus, while the bulbs used to cost like 300 bucks, you can find them for 150-180 these days. Not ideal, of course, but not as bad as it used to be.

You are very misinformed or are clueless. I am just hoping misinformed. Plamsa's will last 12 - 17 years depending how much you watch it. I am going on 5 years with my plasma with Zero fading..
I will take my 5 year old Plasma vs Any New DLP with a new bulb and lets compare pictures.
So if we both pay $2000 for or sets Plasma vs DLP (Size really doesnt matter). In lets say 10 years you have spent rougly another $750.00 just in bulbs. So now that great deal for $2000 isnt so great anymore. Sure you have a new TV every few year but in 10 years I can buy another NEW TV that is current instead of a 10 year old TV Probably for the $750.00 you spent through the years trying to keep your TV going.

As far as the fading is concerned, you're correct.
But, even factoring an extra 750 bucks on a DLP...say you spent 2,700 (including the 10-year bulb cost) for a 61" 1080p TV.
Then say you spent $2,700 on a plasma TV. I guarantee you the difference in picture quality, while noticeable, will be not be drastic...and you're looking at no larger than a 42" Plasma TV for that money (for any reputable brand.)
So....if I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but I'd rather give up a bit (and I'm not trying to downplay the difference...DLP HD looks amazing) of picture quality for 20 inches worth of television.

By the way I'm not going to jump into this little argument we have here full force but just wanted to get a few points out there. When it comes to DLP/Plasma/LCD the debate is as old and as useful as the PS3/Wii/360 debate. Each technology has it's own strengths and weaknesses. Plasma will give you a slightly clearer picture, DLP will give you slightly better black levels/affordability, while LCD sits right in the middle giving you a taste of everything.
Anyone who pulls the "it's night and day" out of their @$$ is either superman and has kryptonian vision or is blind as a bat and just hopes he's right. It's not night and day....it's like 7:30 in the morning and 7:41 in the morning.

Like I said you are very misinformed about Plasma's.
Panasonic:</SPAN> States in new specifications that new plasma TVs and monitors are good to 60,000 to half life.
Samsung</SPAN>: Lists 60,000 hours for plasma lineup.
</SPAN>
Pioneer:</SPAN> States 60,000 hours of use in their new 2005 models.
This is stated by the Manufactures. So companies are backing their Plasma's for that long of a shelf life.

Don't get me wrong theres lies and exaggerations in basically every new technology...."stunning top of the line 1080p video"....well it sounds nice that way so you can't blame them. But just because they are exaggerating doesn't mean they are lying. Will a 100" screen benefit from 1080p the most? Of course it's pure common sense...but theres not some written law that only a 100" screen will reap the benefits. Every big screen tv will see improvements, it's just the smaller you get the less you'll see the improvements until it gets to a point where you can't even tell the difference anymore. But theres not some random gap between a 50" tv and a 100" tv where absolutely no improvement in picture happens what-so-ever. Theres improvement from top to bottom....it's just that the top will see it far more clear, thats not to say the bottom won't see some improvements themselves.
I mean the old addage seems to change every single week now with people trying to push consumers away from the bigger tagged 1080p tv's. "well you can only tell the difference on a tv 50 and bigger"....."60 and bigger"....."70 and bigger"...."100 and bigger"....by the end of next week you'll only see an improvement if you've got one of those NASA moniters. "if your tv can't be seen from space chances are you can't see the difference between 1080p and 720p."

The BluRay players on amazon have all gotten lousey revues.Kind of helped make my decision for me.Bought the HD Toshiba machine that people seem to really like.If nothing else it will up convert my regular DVDs.
The PS3 is the way to go RIGHT now. BR has a ton of great movies just as well as HD DVD..
Sony is coming out with a Nice BR player which I think will retail for around $425.00 but not sure if its 100% compaitble thats why the PS3 is a no brainer.
You will enjoy the Toshiba. Very nice player for the money.

HD DVD Camp Claims Victory in Stand-Alone Player Sales
http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/Hardware/High-Def_Retailing/HD_DVD_Camp_Claims_Victory_in_Stand-Alone_Player_Sales/690
Well its pretty much true for stand-alone players since no-one is counting the PS3 as a BR player. Teh average joe are not willing to pay $599 or up for a BR/DVD player plain and simple. Even if Sony comes out with a $499.00 player is still WAY to much for the average person.
But this is what they are saying at Sigma Designs
"
From CED reprot
Shipments of standalone Blu-ray players will reach 2.5 million decks this year, giving the format the upper hand over its HD DVD rival, Ken Lowe, vp-strategic mktg. at components supplier Sigma Designs, told analysts in a quarterly earnings call. In fact, Sigma, once neutral in the next-gen format war, now sees Blu-ray emerging as the “defacto standard” by year-end, Lowe said.
Sigma previously said 2 million Blu-ray decks would ship this year (CED Nov 21 p1). With PS3 factored in, total 2007 Blu-ray hardware shipments will reach 8.5 million units, Lowe said. Sigma expects its SMP-8634 media processor device to go into 1/2 the Blu-ray decks shipped, he said. It customers include Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, Sharp and Sony, Lowe said. Lowe has treaded warily in next-gen DVD waters because it supplies chips for HD DVD backer Microsoft’s IPTV platform "
LOL they have less then 150,000 standalone but in 6 months they will have 2.5 million. PS3's are not selling so I am pretty sure this wont be either unless they are priced better then toshiba.

Best deal you'll likely get is from Walmart. If your Walmart is actually decent in carrying high definition disks. If Walmart doesn't get the disk you are looking for FYE/Best Buy are your next best option. When it comes to spending cash on a Blu-Ray disk like Ghost Rider the MSRP is 38.95....so chances are the best deal you'll find on ghost rider is $29.99.
From everything I've heard about Ghost Rider it's an awful movie but it's got an amazing transfer and looks awesome in high def.
But anyways if you are out looking for Ghost Rider tomorrow with amazon charging $27 you can pretty much expect to pay $29.99 from all local retailers.

There really aren't that many TV's out there that are 1080i native. Most are 720p (or technically 768p). So that said, they are extremely similar as far as your eye can tell on a 42" screen. Realistically, you could guess that 720p looked a little smoother or 1080i looked a little sharper...etc...but the difference is so small.
If you're bypassing 1080p (which, also, on a 42" TV isn't going to show up much different that the other resolutions)....720p might be your best bet as far as cost vs. size/quality.
I'm pretty sure all 720p native TVs these days will support and scale 1080i images anyway...and possibly vice versa.

I agree and thats is why HD DVD/BR will not take off for a long time. The average Joe is not willing to start replacing their SD DVD's with HD/BR even if there was only 1 format to choose from.
Even with Toshiba's Sweet deals on HD DVD players they are not flying off the shelves. So I dont know what Sony is thinking about selling players at $499.00 its not going to matter.
Yeah Yeah BR has more content. BS to that cuz Disney has pulled back some and Fox had fallen off the planet. And Warners is doing HD DVD before BR..
Its tough right now for both sides.

Looks like neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray will win this war anytime soon.....
Paramount Home Entertainment has announced 'The Jack Ryan Collection,' 'Face/Off (Special Collector's Edition),' 'Disturbia' starring Shia LaBeouf, and 'Top Gun' are all coming to HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the coming months.
While Paramount has not released any disc information for these titles, we can tell you 'Disturbia' will be released on August 7, 'Face/Off (Special Collector's Edition)' will span two discs and be released September 11, 'The Jack Ryan Collection' will be released September 25, and 'Top Gun' will take off on October 2.
'The Jack Ryan Collection' will include 'The Sum of All Fears,' 'Clear and Present Danger,' 'The Hunt For Red October,' and 'Patriot Games.'
On the speculation front, Paramount has announced 'Saturday Night Fever' on DVD will be available September 18. Since the studio has already confirmed a high definition release, don't be surprised if it doesn't hit stores the same date.

I was about to flip out and yell at the movie screen when we had been an hour into the movie and the hulk hadn't even had screen time yet. I was literally looking down at my cell phone every 2 minutes just keeping track of how freakin long it would take for him to finally get on screen. I think he finally showed at the 56 minute mark. So yeah I was heated, hated the movie, etc. Then it came to tv there was nothing else on so I was like "oh what the hell" and watched it and was like "damn knowing that I'm not going to see him for a while actually makes the movie not bad", then after a 3rd viewing I was a fan. It told his backstory exactly how it had to be told and the desert fight sequences were bad ass. The backstory is definately something that needs to be told in every comic movie...it's just a shame that it took like an hour to tell the hulks when he has probably the smallest backstory of everyone. Gamma rays, ouch, angry, green. Thats it.

I'm the same way. I'm just geeked out to see my fav comic characters on the big screen so I grade them on a curve so to speak. Hulk is the only one I was really disappointed in. So much so that I didn't even buy it. Probably cause I'm a huge Hulk fan. I loved when he was in the desert tossing tanks and such but otherwise I can't think of anything I really liked about the movie.

I've got 4 walmarts within 20 minutes of me and of the 4 only 2 of them carry the movies. But thats also kinda misleading....of the 4 walmarts 2 of them are super walmarts. The 2 super walmarts are the 2 that carry the movies but like I said...misleading. One of the walmarts literally only carries Night at the Museum...THATS IT. One freakin movie. The other superwalmart thats like a 2 minute drive away from my house carries about 20 blu-ray movies and 5-6 hd dvd movies.

So I ended up watching 2 movies tonight....Ghost Rider and Daddy's Little Girls.
Ghost Rider was pretty bad but I liked it. I think it did alot of things right. Ghost Riders fight scenes were pretty cool, all of the character deaths were badass....then penance stares in high def were cool as hell. I mean at least it got the character right....it's more then you can say for X-Men and how badly they goofed and ended up turning Wolverine into Cyclops and Cyclops into Wolverine. Also Eva Mendes is really hot so thats always a plus, she was even hot when she was half dead. The audio was some of the best I've heard in a movie to date...the subwoofer was getting it's job done tonight to a point where it sounded like a motorcycle was driving right through the middle of my theatre. The surround sound also kicked in for some of the weirder moments in the movies making you hear voices literally all around the room. Top that off with the fact that the CG was actually done pretty well (a hell of alot better then Superman) and it's really not that awful of a movie. As for the 2nd portion of the double feature Daddy's Little Girls was actually a pretty good movie. It's a predictable movie with a twist. You can see the ending coming from a mile away the real question is how does it get that way? It was interesting enough for me to wonder how it was going to end up despite me already subconsciously knowing.

I think off the top of my head I'm pretty close to having around 90 or so Blu-Ray movies. I remember as of Christmas I had 1 stack of movies that was like 30 or so high, and now I've got 3 stacks so thats basically how I'm making my guess. I'd take a picture but my camera blows. It's one of those old school digital cameras....cell phones are more advanced then it. I could take a picture but all you'd see is a mass of blue cases and not have the slightest idea what any of the movies were.
When it comes to movies though I usually get like 2 a week...I'll give anything a shot as long as it sounds like it could be entertaining.
I have pics up in the home theatre thread but those are old as hell...back then I was still planning on hanging up a Fathead of Willis McGahee and didn't have surround sound or anything. Alot has changed since then but I did have a pic of a pile of blu-rays.

I haven't checked numbers lately to see which is selling more. We sold the new LG Super-Blu combo player last week but they returned it but I don't know why. Now it's out for sale again as a "open box" item but you get a $120 gift card with it. I almost sold it to a guy who already had a PS3 the other day. But because of it being open box he decided not to. So I sold him the Toshiba HD-A20 for $400 and Breach. That's the first actual player I've sold since I started working there 2 weeks ago.

I also agree with a lot of what is said here...and the writer clarifies and says both formats will fail to replace DVDs...which I have been saying all along and that they will remain niche products.
Two things I would conclude from this article and the format war in general thus far.
1.) The "average" consumer is lazy and ******ed. And the buffoons who say they can't tell the difference are lying to themselves or are just not "interested" in seeing the difference, or admitting to it. I'm so sick of hearing about the average consumer. At the end of the day I understand that obviously that's where the vast majority of sales go to....but it's tiring and frustrating that such an uninformed (by choice or by inability to understand - or, again, just laziness) and remedial majority of our consumers are the ones that are catered to. Sucks.
2.) Why are people interested in predicting the failure of these formats altogether? I can understand the frustration and backlash over the competing formats...but to predict or advocate for both to fail doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm not saying that's exactly what this guy in the article is doing, but there are many people who do...maybe because they've invested so much in DVD's that they don't want to admit they're more or less becoming obsolete already.
But here's my point. If these high-def formats go away...what's the alternative here? No high-def optical format? Which means movies go back to only being released on DVD...and maybe you can download high def movies a la XBOX live systems? There's no way that becomes completely user friendly for years, maybe a decade, when accounting for storage, time to download, ease of use and overall cost. So hell, I'd rather deal with a format war and all the garbage that goes along with it just to have the movies in HD to begin with. I for one will always want a physical disc (or whatever the format is)...just as a personal preference.
You can bet if HD DVD AND Blu Ray fail, nobody is jumping back into that ocean for a while until HDTVs have dominated the market and a whole crap load of research has been done on the "average" consumer that proves they're ready for something new. Hell I'd hate for the "average" consumer to start dictating when it's time to step up in technology. That would be ass-backwards.

Not defending the consumer by any means, but it also doesn't help when they ONLY broadcast HD material on the demo TV's. It's definitely confusing...and I understand they want to showcase the best the product has to offer, but they won't even mention you're watching HD unless you ask directy.

So i run an additional audio cable from the DVD player to the receiver?

correct if your reciever doesnt have HDMI then you will need either 5.1 analog (which I prefer) or toslink

LOL :D
I'm assuming you have an older receiver so you should be able to use toslink (optical) or digital coax from the HD DVD player to the receiver.

Sorry. :D I guess it will have to be optical since the A-2 doesnt have the analog like the A-1 or XA1

The Fifth Element Exchange Program
When Blu-ray first launched, there were great expectations for the titles released. That was especially true for 'The Fifth Element', which had been a home theater enthusiast favorite on DVD. Unfortunately, the results were less than stellar, but Sony is here to atone! Those who purchased 'The Fifth Element' in its current form can exchange the disc for the new, cleaned up version of the film, due out July 17th.
The disc will come as a BD-50, encoded with AVC, and have two lossless/uncompressed audio tracks: the same PCM track from the original release (which was quite excellent) and a 20-bit Dolby TrueHD track. The extras remain the same, but the film has been remastered for a cleaner/crisper video experience.
Right now, Sony is taking down your name, mailing address, and phone number and will contact you closer to the release of the remastered version on how to exchange your disc. When you call, have that information ready, or if you are emailing, make sure to place it in your message. Here is the contact information:
Phone: 800-860-2878
Email: consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.com

Finally a deal on the A2 for us Canucks.
Futureshop has it for $349.99 CDN plus tax. It's not as good as the US deals, but it's probably the best we'll see.
3 free HD DVDs are included.

I think the Xbox 360 HD addon is having a deal. You get the free king kong and 2 other movies as well. Not bad.
Since the HD addon is made by toshiba you should be able to get the 5 free dvds as well but cant.

Is the add-on a viable HD component.....or is it the lowest common denomination??
I've considered plunking down the $200 for the add-on.

It does a good job for a first HD DVD player, but considering how cheap you can get the HD-A2 now the A2 is probably the better option in the US.

And it does come with the 360 media remote and King Kong... and two other HD DVDs.
I love mine :)

hmmm... is it possible that the player is outputting something like TrueHD that your receiver doens't recognize?
Try changing the audio options when you put in an HD DVD and set it to regular Dolby Digital 5.1
You're playing both disk types through the A2 right?

My last guess is update the firmware. Connect the A2 to the internet and keep your fingers crossed.
If that doesn't work, call Toshiba product support. Maybe they've heard of the problem.

Well, if I had a BD player I'd look at the following.
Blackhawk Down
Hellboy
The Prestige
Layer Cake
Ice Age 2
Open Season
Reservoir Dogs (depending on the PQ)
Young Guns (depending on the PQ)

Young Guns is pretty good PQ...and a fun movie. Definitely Hellboy on blu-ray.
The first Mummy on HD-DVD. Half-Baked on HD DVD :)

Does anyone have Apocalypto?
This title interests me quite a bit...but I don't think I can get past the Mayan thing. Call me shallow, but subtitle movies are usually never a purchase for me.
Is it a barrier to anyone else?

Watched Sneakers HD DVD last night...one of my favorite movies. PQ is above average, with at least a dozen true moments of 3D, especially when they get to all the geese.
Redford's face...which is shown up close for like 2/3 of the movie, looks fairly detailed, but there is a softness to it...the picture is definitely not razor sharp. It shows it's age a bit, but the skintones are all spot on.
Great movie, 3.8/5 PQ in my opinion.

nice...my wal-mart had it in stock today...weird it was the only blu-ray they had. 25.88 or something like that. I didnt' buy it, but maybe it's a sign of things to come.
Chugga
06-16-2007, 03:27 PM
Unfortunately it's only a "sign of things to come" if that copy of Ghost Rider actually moves. Of the 4 Walmarts in my area they all had the same philosophy....put out 1 Blu-Ray title and 1 HD DVD title and see where they go. Worst part for you is they put Ghost Rider which despite it being an awesome disk isn't something people are going to go out and buy because of the movies reputation. I mean at least give it a half decent chance and put out the Pirates movies a couple weeks back.
My Walmarts first test title was X-Men....that sold out, so we got in Superman Returns, that sold out so we got in Ice Age, that sold out and well you get the idea. By the end of December they were a halfway decent option to shop at...now they are my #1 stop. In comparison the 3 other Walmarts in my area all gave Blu-Ray/HD DVD a shot and it failed miserably and the titles were shipped off to the walmart that actually has good blu-ray sales.
The best thing that could possibly ever happen to your Walmart is if you showed up tomorrow and Ghost Rider was completely sold out....I doubt that will happen though.
JaylisJayP
06-17-2007, 12:55 AM
yeah Ghost Rider isn't exactly putting your best foot forward...but the 2 displays that had them near the front of the store were nearly sold out of the blu-ray. They probably had like two dozen to begin with and there were about 6 or 7 left today.

It's an online only sale but you can do in-store pickup. I grabbed Pitch Black and Fearless (still can't pull the trigger on Hulk....haven't seen it, heard it's reference PQ but below average story).

Marginally, but DDD doesn't have a great HD DVD selection, and you don't have to wait for delivery if you do in-store pickup at best buy. I mean we're talking less than a dollar difference here.
