Was the spray foam expensive? That will be my next phase down stairs...

Initially yes, but after government grants it's pretty decent. Total was just under $4200 for about 1100 sq. ft. (that's floor space, not sure about walls) but I'm hoping to get the full $2000 back from the government... $2200 seems like a deal and a half to me. It's so warm down there now. The cement floor used to be cold, even with fiberglass but now it's not really cold or warm but a lot easier to walk on in bare feet. House is a lot tighter now, might have to look into getting a HRV.

LOL

Coming up on taping, mudding and sanding drywall, huh? Uggghhh, the worst freakin' job ever, I swear I'm paying someone to do that next time - I won't do it again, it sucks so bad. I can't handle seeing all the little spots that I screwed up on.

Naw, as much as I love drywall *shudders* phase 3 will be replacing the 3 basement windows which are all rusty and crap. Not sure yet if I'll be doing the drywall or hiring... I'd love to be able to say I did everything myself (not including insulation and windows lol) but the idea of someone come in and getting it done in a week sure is appealing. And I have the same problem... any defects I made would stick out like a sore thumb if I did it myself.

I imagine if this never gets completed as a theater room, you could always use it as an SnM dungeon. :p

Well, that small bedroom in the pic will be where the components and movies will be located, but there is a bigger bedroom which I was going to use for a guest bedroom.... but that is uh... tempting. :D:D

The foam looks great freezur :)

Does it act as a vapor barrier as well? Or do you still need to put up plastic and tape it?

I'd also recommend hiring a mudder for the drywall... putting up the dw isn't bad, but mudding and taping is hell. If you do decide to do it yourself, make sure you get a drywall bag for your shopvac.

Yep, it does. The company I used is Spray Jones (same company usually on Holmes) and there is about 50 spray foam companies in the phone book... but SJ are the only one's licensed to spray it and leave it without any plastic, and won't need any plastic. I can put drywall right over top.

These guys are awesome. Came in (2 guys), did the job in about 5 hours - covered everything in the basement with tarps, taped studs (for any overspray), sprayed, took tape off, cleaned up and even swept before they left. So glad I went with them, very professional, not to mention no need for plastic but I need to cover with drywall eventually for fire protection (I think it's code).

And I agree mudding and taping is pure hell and one of thee most unenjoyable experiences I have ever had. Don't know if I want to go through it again.

'TDK DVD' Explodes Out of the Gate
Published: 12/11/2008, Last Updated: 12/12/2008 03:05am

Home Media Magazine reports that The Dark Knight DVD has blasted out of the gate selling more than 3 million units during its first day of release including more than 600,000 Blu-ray discs. Warner Home Video, which released the TDK DVD, is confident that The Dark Knight, which earned over $530 million at the box office (the second highest total ever), will end up as the best-selling DVD of the year.

Warner officials were especially pleased with the Blu-ray sales. Just a few weeks ago Iron Man set a record by selling over 500,000 BDs in its first week—a record that The Dark Knight hi-definition disc overwhelmed in just one day. According to Home Media, WHV officials expect The Dark Knight Blu-ray disk, which is the first Warners’ release to include state-of-the-art BD-Live features available via Internet-connected Blu-ray players, will sell over a million copies during its first week of release—a milestone event that, if it happens, will testify to both the immense popularity of the film and to the growing consumer acceptance of the Blu-ray format.

Perhaps...although I wonder if...

1.) People are procrastinating their shopping until the week of Xmas.
2.) WB has watered down TDK with all of its various editions, 2 Disc, Wide, Full, Blu, etc.

If it looks like the TV show did when broadcast, it is some of the best HD viewing you can have. That being said, I'm pretty sure IGN reviewd it, but beware of spoilers.

So I got my parents that new Panny plasma I was talking about (TH-50PZ800U) and I'm going to have to set it up for them.

What are the initial settings that I should put it on? I know I want to turn it down initally to prevent burn-in for the first 100 or so hours. What do I turn it down to?

Any other tips to help improve my parents viewing of the TV would be awesome.

Take it off "vivid" mode and set it to standard or normal (can't remember which it is).

Also set the aspect to Fill. That way all 4:3 content will fill the screen, but 16:9 will display normally.

OK, thanks. I might take my DVE disk and try to calibrate the TV too, but I found that so tedious last time and it was for my own TV.

This TV has a THX mode if I'm not mistaken. Should I put it on that or not?

Also, do they need to limit watching CNN or ESPN (stuff with a crawl) on it for a few weeks?

PrimeBane
12-12-2008, 02:52 PM
Nah... once it's off Vivid they should be fine to watch pretty much anything.

I don't know much about THX mode.

There's probably no point to calibrating until the break-in period is over.

i posted this in the Dark Knight Blu Ray thread..but figured you guys could answer this for me too. they were talking about the 120hz thing and such...

another novice question, but what's the difference between LCD and DLP? Does DLP have that 120hz thing? i'm just wondering because i have a 62" DLP and want to know if i'm missing out on anything.

ewto16
12-12-2008, 02:56 PM
Nope, the 120hz thing is for LCDs only. It is to help compensate for motion blur.

I saw some TVs with it again today and I can't get past how bizarre it makes everything look. I can't stand it. Oddly, it seems to make motions unnatural to me. It somehow makes everything seem off in some way. I can't really figure out the right words to express it.

At this point, I'd never buy an LCD TV simply because I can't stand it.

In fairness, apparently that "unnatural motion" isn't due to the 120Hz refresh... it's due to another motion option on the tv that can be turned on or off. Found that out about a month back.

I'd describe it as "claymation" like.

Watched TDK tonight... still love this movie. The PQ and AQ were great as expected. :D

One thing that is bothering me about the latest BD releases... the default sound is never set to the lossless option whether it's TrueHD or DTS-HD MA. We got through the first 10 minutes of TDK before I remembered to check (it didn't sound great). Sure enough, the disk defaulted to DD.

Is this something I can change on the PS3? It's kindof a pass in the ass.

Personally, I liked the movie. It's no classic by any means, but it's entertaining enough. I can see why many here might not have liked it.

PQ seemed a little weak in parts. Probably about a 4 out of 5 overall. The PQ was outstanding as usual for a Universal title.

Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull wasn't bad by any means. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sure there were a couple corny moments, mainly Mutt imitating Tarzan. Overall I really liked it. Don't see what all the hatred is towards it. To me it felt just like any of the other Indiana Jones movies in both size and scope. The alien stuff is obviously far fetched but it didn't feel out of place to me.

Question: What is the difference between HDMI and HDMI 1.3 cables? Any noticeable differences?

Thanks in advance.

The first person who answered you is incorrect. There are significant differences between HDMI 1.0 and 1.3. Never buy anything lower than 1.3a.

HDMI 1.0 lacks:

DVD Audio
Dolby TrueHD
Important CEC commands
Deep Color
Super CD Audio
DTS-HD Audio
and even basic xcYCC support.

You can get a good HDMI 1.3a cable for under $10. HDMI 1.0 is not even close to being the same technology as 1.3a. You can do more with an optical cord than you can HDMI 1.0

Wow...that was almost too exciting. OK back to business. My weekend viewing.

Elf - Can't tell you much about the PQ and AQ since I was drunk, but man it was funny as hell.

Han**** - Looked and sounded above-average. Movie was slightly above average. Kept me watching, but not much to revisit on a second play-through. Another one I'm glad I Netflixed.

Stargate - I'll tell you what, for $10 (Wal-Mart), this is a decent little title. Audio is good. PQ can be very sharp and vibrant, but is often marred by a lot of sand flying across the screen. Sometimes I couldn't tell if it was sand or grain or both.

Wal-Mart stores have a bunch of Lionsgate titles for $10. The 3 first Rambos, Saw 1 and 2, Crash, Stargate, Punisher, T2, Total Recall I believe, House of 1,000 Corpses (which is totally worth it...one of the best catalog PQ imo).

'Capote,' 'In Cold Blood' Double Feature Headed to Blu-ray
Mon Dec 15, 2008 at 09:00 AM ET

Sony is bringing a double dose of true crime to Blu-ray, announcing a two-title bundle of 'Capote' and 'In Cold Blood' for February release.

Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman as Pulitzer Prize-winning author Truman Capote, 'Capote' documents the writing of the landmark true crime novel 'In Cold Blood.'

Sony will release both the Oscar-winning Hoffman biopic and the acclaimed 1967 big-screen adaptation of the Capote novel as a special two-pack on February 17.

There are no tech specs or supplement details available as of yet, but we expect the full media release in the coming days.

Sony also hasn't announced separate stand-alone Blu-ray releases of either title, but as always, we'll keep you posted.

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $34.98.

You know, I had this big rant going... then I thought, I better test my system first. :)

You see, I had an old HDMI cable that I picked up for $10 during Boxing Day sales nearly 2 years ago. I've used it on my PS3 ever since I got it.

Today I swapped it out for a newer HDMI 1.3a cable... the flicker problem I was having with the XMB appears to have gone away. I wonder now if this may have effected my lossless sound as well... perhaps I'll test that out over lunch today (working from home)

So, I'll eat a little crow here and say if you do have old cables, send them packing and get some new HDMI 1.3a cables, especially if you're having any troubles. They certinaly cheap enough to purchase (and watch for a monoprice deal). :)

Self owned.

lol.

I read all the specs before, silly. I meant if my cables are already working... What other changes would I notice by swapping cables?

I actually may try new cables on at least one TV.

I have a 42" Pio Plasma, and I use an Onkyo TX-SR604s as an HDMI video switch. Often, when I use Rewind and Instant Replay (a ~10 second jump backwards) on my cable box, I get a video dropout for a few seconds. I just assumed that was a byproduct of using a 604 vs. a 605. It was so annoying, I finally switched to component cables on that box.

Now I wonder if it's my cheap ass sub 1.3a HDMI cables....

That's the ONLY thing I can think of. I also have a PS3 hooked up to the TV, and have never had a problem with anything.

My 50" Panny Plasma downstairs uses an 805 as an HDMI video switch, and I've never had a dropout ever. Even when I do Rewind and Instant Replay on my cable box. Hmm... But the Pio Plasma uses a 15 feet HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV, when all the other 8 or so HDMI cables in my house are 6 feet. Maybe THAT's what I need to upgrade...

grif32
12-15-2008, 11:12 AM
For the small cost of HDMI cables from Monoprice (via link Prime posted thanks) it's worth upgraded your HDMI cables IMHO.

ewto16
12-15-2008, 11:20 AM
I may think about that. Don't both the source and the TV have to be 1.3 complient though? I don't think my TV is, so I'm not sure it matters. How would I find out if my TV was or not?

PrimeBane
12-15-2008, 11:25 AM
Unless you're getting a flicker or having delays like HollandX, the upgrade may not be worth it for the PQ. HDMI 1.3a seems to affect sound more than picture (deep color is not used on BD)

PrimeBane
12-15-2008, 11:26 AM
As to finding out what HDMI in your tv has check the manufacturer's website first... then search AVS.

The HDMI out on the BD player and the switching on the receiver is more important IMO.

OK guys - want some advice - anyone see the new Best Buy Combo Deal for the XBOX360?

It's in the new weekly ad - you get an XBOX 360 Pro Bundle with your choice of a Samsung Class 720p 42" Plasma or a Samsung 37" 720p LCD TV for $899. It's like a $400 discount for the package.

My question is - I am even gonna notice that it's not 1080p? I know many have stated that below 42" it really doesn't matter. I have a 42" LG 1080p LCD TV that I love to watch Blu Ray's on with my PS3. I've never really paid attention to the difference at stores on the 720p displays. This new TV will be going in my currently under construction man room which may eventually have a stand alone Blu Ray player. I don't really need the XBOX but a few of my buddies have them and it would be fun to play with them online. The PS3 network sucks for playing online and I don't really play games that much because it seems like all the cool games are on the 360.

So any advice? Which TV should I get? My wife and I are expecting our first child any day now and this is the last thing I need to spend money on - but it seems like a really good deal. Not to mention I can throw it on my BB card and make monthly payments for the next 18 months. Here are the links for specs:

Since you already own a 1080p 42" plasma, you "may" notice a difference. It will really depend on how far back you're sitting from the tv. IMO, you won't notice.

I game on a 42" plasma... you should be just fine as long as you don't leave the game paused for 2 days straight. Switch up the content from time to time and you'll be fine. :)

For LCD tv owners... a good article if you notice you're having problems with your cable or sat box and your new tv.

Is your cable set top box acting odd?
Tuesday, 16 December 2008
In the second quarter of 2008, flat panel sales television sales in North America jumped 28% from the same quarter in 2007 to 9.3 million units.

Interestingly, as flat panel sales skyrocket, Digital Home Canada has also witnessed a dramatic rise in the number of our readers who complain about new and unusual problems with their cable set top boxes or satellite television receiver.

Over the last twelve to eighteen months, many Digital Home readers have been writing to us and telling us about how their new LCD TVs, and sometimes plasma television, was adversely affecting their cable STBs (set top boxes) or other equipment.

Typical problems encountered by Digital Home readers include channels on the set top box changing at random and the television or set top box remote only working at close range.

After much investigation, it has been learned that the problem results from IR (infra-red) interference from your flat panel television. It is much more common with LCD televisions because of IR leakage from the LCD backlights.

Simply, the IR leakage from your television mimics the signals that are sent out by the remote control used to control your cable set top box or satellite receiver. This results in random channel changes or other bizarre behavour.

Unaware that this could be happening, many Digital Home readers have complained that their neighbour is changing the channels on their television! Imagine the sheepish grin on their face after they learn it’s their new expensive flat panel television!

We asked our Digital Forum HDTV guru, 57, what he recommends to stop the problem and he gave us the following three pieces of advice.

Place the cable set top box or satellite receiver further from the HDTV. The farther the set top box is from the television, the less likely you are to encounter problems.
Put the receiver in a shielded location so to prevent it from receiving stray IR signals.
Change the default picture mode - usually called Vivid or Dynamic - on your flat panel television. By changing to a dimmer mode, the intensity of stray IR signals is typically reduced.

Our guru also tells Digital Home that the problem stops on some makes and models once the TV has been on for a while, so simply waiting a minute or two can sometimes alleviate any problems.

To learn more about this problem and steps you can take to resolve it, check out our "Is your LCD affecting your STB" discussion thread in the Digital Forum.

Membership in the Digital Forum is free and with more than 500,000 visitors a month, there is always something new and interesting to discuss.

No such thing as burn in on a DLP. You will have to replace bulbs at some point, but that is about it. Take it off VIVID or whatever the brightest mode is. Set the brightness to about the middle. This will help extend the life of your bulb.

I have a Sony SXRD, which is basically the same thing, and I have yet to replace the bulb in over two years. Actually, that isn't that long I guess. Seems like I have had my TV longer than that.

I like the new central hub idea where all departments lead there.

As for BB, they are trying a smaller style store, similar to a lot of FS's, to see if they can make it work in the US, as the small box has never worked there.

Brisk consumer sales - totaling over 10 million with one week of sales reported - are expected to continue through the holiday season. The Dark Knight is the best selling Blu-ray title in history and will become the best selling 2008 title overall this week. The response to the digital copy offering included on the Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD has been remarkable with the number of consumers activating their digital copies approaching 300,000. The Dark Knight is already the number one movie for the year on the iTunes 2008 Chart.

The Dark Knight marks the first time that a major feature film has been shot in part using IMAX(R) cameras, marking a revolutionary integration of film formats. The Dark Knight Blu-ray disc takes advantage of the marriage of IMAX(R) and 35mm formats by using the hybrid master to replicate the unique theatrical experience. The IMAX scenes are also included on the 2-disc Special Edition as bonus materials.

* The Dark Knight figures included sales data from US, UK, Canada, Japan, Benelux and Australia

Rented and watched Mama Mia! last night with the wife. I generally like musicals and this was pretty good. The Abba songs sounded great in DTS-HD MA. :D

Top blu-rays of the year.

He does a very good job selecting imo (although some of them are no-brainers)..except for Sleeping Beauty. I don't get it, I find this to be one of the worst "classic" Disney movies. I haven't seen the blu, and I know they did a great job on the transfer and that's why it made this list...whatever.

TDK a hit on Blu-ray
Dec. 17, 2008

by: Mike Sampson

We kinda all knew this was going to happen but today Warner Bros. made it official - THE DARK KNIGHT is the best-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. After one week. The DARK KNIGHT Blu-ray sold over 1 million copies in the US in its first week of release and over 1.7 million worldwide. IRON MAN held the previous record of 400,000 in its first week. By contract, TDK sold 600,000 copies in its first day. So for all those who say that Blu-ray won't last, these numbers seem to disagree. While it's not on par with the 13 million standard DVDs of THE DARK KNIGHT that were sold, expect the number of Blu-ray discs moved in 2009 to increase with many picking up discounted Blu-ray players for the holidays this year. Warner Bros. also added that 300,000 people activated their digital copy of THE DARK KNIGHT that was included on the Special Editions. That copy is viewable on your PC (only in standard format, not HD) and allows you to watch THE DARK KNIGHT and surf for porn on the same screen. Nerd heaven.

For those that updated the firmware on a Sony BDP-S350, how do you do it? Is there a menu option or something to click once I hook it up to the TV and ethernet? Or does it detect it automatically like the PS3?

use the XMB and navigate it to the update icon... click on it with the remote and it will check for updates.

It has an XMB as well? Neat-o. I'll have to do that tonight.

I bought my parents a Harmony 550 to control all this new stuff. I figure it is easier than explaining how to use 4 remotes.
