HDMI 1.3a really doesn't seem to effect PQ much... it does have advanced color features, but since no one currently uses them it's not a big deal.
HDMI 1.3a is much more important for sound at this point.
sounds good... I'm more concerned with getting the best picture quality as I can since I need to upgrade my old ass receiver sometime next year

novice question, but how big is the difference between 1080i and 1080p? i have a 62" DLP that was advertised as a 1080p but is only a 1080i. i have a blu ray player, and hdmi cables for my 360 and PS3 and everthing looks good. but what am i really missing out on?

Resolution wise, you're not missing a thing. :)
What you might notice in some movies are jaggies along angled straight lines. 1080p smooths those out.

Dammit, I really thought you'd have them by now. :( Not to worry, if they don't show up, I have a couple more I'll hold for you just in case.
Your's went out a few days after the rest... but it's still strange you didn't get them today.
Hopefully everyone has them by tomorrow or Christmas Eve (assuming there's mail delivery that day).
I don't have mine yet either but I'm thinking it should be here sometime this week.

Lately I've been of the opinion that Sony puts way too much money in to advertising while other companies are actually coming up with better pictures.
Is Sony all hype or are they still top one two or three in terms of picture quality etc?

Sundevil - I would be more irritated with the fact that someone sold you a tv and it was advertised as one resolution but was another.
Terry - sharp used to make good tvs but have fallen off recently as the other brands jay listed worked hard to gain market share. The newest sony TVs are really very good. I would agree with how jay ranked them.

Sorry I went to sleep. I usually have Sharp in the LG/Philips tier, just below those other ones I mention.
I'm also not an LCD fan per se, so I can't really speak to the quality of these new ones like others in here can. I don't really stay up on them.
If I had a choice I'd buy a Plasma first, then if I wasn't mounting something on a wall, I'd get a DLP over LCD, you get so much more for your money. Yes you have to pay for new bulbs, but imo that's about the only drawback.

I have a 720p TV that will support 1080i. It's also a 62" DLP, I've had it for probably 4 years or so now. And I'd say the simple answer is you might be missing a very small step in PQ, but really not much at all. Even at 62", the difference between 720p/1080i/1080p is so minimal, and even then you have to be sitting like 6 feet away or closer from the screen to notice it.
I always say this when this type of question pops up, but I wish I had bookmarked this very long and detailed article that was posted on avs forum a year ago or so explaining that 1080p is flat-out unnecessary for most people.
I suppose if you have a 100" projection screen it might be a different story.

I am not for DLP. To me LCD beats DLP hands down. DLP is cheap for a reason. Thats not to say there are not nice DLP set's out there. Everyone likes differesnt TV's.. Honestly you can not go wrong either way.
But I am with you I enjoy Plasma 100x's better then LCD and 1000x's more then DLP.

It deinterlaces all 1080i inputs internally to 1080p before passing the signal on to the imaging elements.

Edit: :Guess not. Everything I read says it can not.. Interesting.
I find it funny the Ant1 will do 1080P when nothing broadcast in 1080P but HDMI wont. Very strange.
yeah...i guess it was their way of getting the less educated folks like myself to buy since we think it's 1080p without really knowing all the facts. i still think it's a pretty good tv though....

I love HD DVD. I constantly check highdefdigest's exchange forum for $5 movies. Only problem with HD is that it's so sensitive. I bought Last Samurai last week and I didn't see any scratches on it. When I popped it in, one part froze because the laser couldn't read it.
But for $5 it's worth the risk.

I downloaded the latest firmware and setup the Netflix streaming and I actually think the picture quality is better than streaming over the 360. I do like the 360's smooth navigation better than the blu ray players

My receiver has 3, don't think I'd need anymore than that. I use 2 for the PS3 and DF player. The Sat. box doesn't use HDMI out, just component which is mildly ******ed considering it's a HD box. Glad my receiver has component switching though so it still runs from the receiver to TV through HDMI.

On an unrelated note, is it just me or has HDD been slacking lately. I didn't even know Traitor was coming out until I see the commercials "on dvd and blu-ray" it wasn't even on HDD's release schedule until after they posted a review for it.

My parents new panny plasma has a rolling purple line or two that go through the picture when you are watching tv. There seems to be a buzz or hum from the speakers that are on the tv as well. I think it is only happening with the cable box but I haven't got to check yet for sure. Cable box is hooked up component jacks.
Any tips or ideas on how to fix it

Sounds like a ground loop problem... is it plugged directly into the wall or are you using a power bar? A good power bar with both the tv AND cablebox plugged in should eliminate the problem.

Cable box is connected via component cable (R/G/B) to the TV. Optical sound cable runs from the cable box to the receiver.
Cable box, TV, home theater system, blu-ray player, and VCR/DVD, XM dock, VCR tape rewinder are all plugged into the same power strip. Looks like a strip from ACE Hardware. Looks nice, but I doubt it has any special shielding.
The outlet the power bar is plugged into has 2 outlets. Can I plub the cable box into one and then all the other stuff into the power bar? Do I need to plug the cable box and the TV in to seperate outlets entirely?

Do they have a sub or anything else hooked up other then the BD, Cable Box etc?
Get rid of the Power Bar first and plug them in seperatly so if that gets rid of it.

They could have a bad outlet that is causing it as well.. So many different things could be causing it.
Unplug the Home Theater System as well and see if that gets rid of it.
Most likely is the Cable TV and its easliy elminated with a Cable TV Ground Isolator. I have ran into this problem alot.

My mom put in a blu-ray movie and it seemed fine. I didn't see the purple lines when she was playing the movie. If it was the home theater, I would think I would see it when she was watching a movie as well correct?
Where can I get a Cable TV ground isolator? Radio Shack and Wal-Mart are my only options out here. Should the cable company provide one? They hooked up the cable box. Shouldn't they have noticed the lines and determined what the issue was?
I'll see what I can try on it. I'll attempt plugging it into a different outlet or seperately from the power bar first and see what that does.

So I recalibrated my receiver setup since I got the new center speaker. It turned out the + and - for the cable connection to the speaker were reversed. I was probably playing it like this for a couple of hours before noticing the mis-hap. Is there a chance that my center could be messed up of this? Right now, it sounds pretty damn good.

They never had a cable box before. The cable ran straight to the tv. I plugged and unplugged everything else. The line appears and disappears as soon as I plug the green component wire into the box or tv. If I have the cable box unplugged or that wire unhooked the purple lines aren't there. Cable company is supposed to come back on the fifth to rewire the house so ill make sure my mom has them fix it. They are responsible correct?

I've watched Dark City twice since when I first bought it and I actually like it more and more every time I see it. I really think it's a pretty awesome movie and I'm happy that you pleaded for me to buy it. My collection is better for having that movie in it.
Then theres Immortal. I'm sorry but it's like I just got done watching 2 completely different movies wrapped into one. On one hand I started watching this Sci-Fi movie with a pretty cool plot that had a ton of potential. And then on the other hand I ended up watching a clumsy softcore porn with blue boobs. Don't get me wrong, I like blue boobs as much as the next guy....especially hers, but I mean what the hell? They just threw the story right out the window for a good half an hour and then foolishly tied it back up with 5 minutes left to go.
It didn't help that the CG took me completely out of the movie. Even when I tried to ignore it some CG character would pop up along side an actual human and make me cringe. Metal Gear Solid 4 looked about 20 times more realistic than most of the characters and environments in Immortal. If you asked me what year Immortal was made without a doubt I would have said late 80's. The fact that it was made in 05 is kinda ridiculous. I think the thing that annoyed me the most was the fact that it wasn't like they only CG'ed things that they could no way replicate in the real world with makeup/props etc. They would just randomly make humans.....why the hell wouldn't you just cast a human? Instead of making those AWFUL CG characters. Would it really be too difficult to cast a human and give him an eye patch? Seriously their CG work looked borderline "xbox" quality....and not the 360.
I'm not going to call it an outright bad movie, I don't feel like I wasted my time or anything like that. But I mean damn what the hell did you make me watch? I don't even know.

I'm not exactly sure why I like it, but I remain a huge fan of the film. But going back and viewing it a second time, especially on blu-ray, yeah the CG is antiquated, I'll give you that.

so i've swapped the HDMI cord i was using for my PS3 an put it into my receiver to see how it would look. i'm not sure what to think. i still have the component cables in at well so i go back and forth to check out the difference. the mode with the component cables looks brighter, and the HDMI mode looks darker and more dull. however, i do beleive the HDMI mode looks more crisp as far as whats actually going on on the program. I Am Legend was on in HD on HBO last night and although it looked darker on the HDMI mode, it lookd better. i guess it works for that movie, but it looked really good on that channel. then again, when i'm watching Sportscenter or something, i feel it looks better on the component channel because it's brighter and all the grapics look good. it isn't as grainy on the HDMI channel, but i'm just not sure which is better. i tried changing the settings too on the HDMI channel and i can't get it any brighter. which way should it look?

hmmm... if the settings are they same for both inputs
then you really shouldn't see a difference.
The cables may be interferring with each other. I know it's a pain, but you may have to unplug them for a better comparison. Or just leave the component cables in if you orefer the picture. :)

I'm heading to Best Buy here shortly. I'll snag another Rocketfish 12 footer and see if that helps. The one I'm using now has some sort of netting type texture around the cable. The new ones are just smooth. Wonder if they are any better. Thank God with my discount they only cost $7. :D

Grabbed the Godfather set for $59 CDN yesterday on Futureshop.ca and was a little pissed I missed out on Firefly for $29 so I did some random searching and found it for $29 on Amazon.ca!! Added the Kill Bill's for $9.95 each just for the hell of it as well....
So any Canadians that want Firefly on BD, Amazon.ca has price matched Futureshop.ca.
Man, I left 4 copies at work today.

So, added another Blu to the collection after work today, picked up season one of Weeds. It came highly recommended from a couple of guys at work, so for $16.99, could not pass it up.
Also, I see some good views for Dark City in here, is $19.99 worth it?
I'd say it's worth it.

You really should just buy the next two seasons on blu ray now. You will burn through the episodes fast. It gets even better. Season four is sort of weird but still good.
Also just watched kung fu panda. Great movie and fantastic picture and sound. Ill be buying this as part of a sale sometime for sure. Another movie I really wish came with a dvd copy for my wife.

Switched my Cox cable box from HDMI to component yesterday. :( I would have rather kept it HDMI but it was giving me too many problems with handshake issues and occasional audio drop outs.
Sony 720 owners.....Now I need to use 2 optical inputs for my cable box and 360. My 360 goes into the SAT optical input which I've assigned to Video 1. Unfortunately the only other optical input available is for TV which isn't assignable. Any ideas?

Ok, here is the deal.........
I want to add some additional speakers outside to keep the ambiance music playing when I have guests.....
Unfortunately, my receiver does not have outputs for more speakers....
Now, if I wire some using the same outputs of the front speakers, combining them, is it safe ?
Will I have sound degradation when watching movies later on ?
The outdoor speakers will have an on/off switch when not in use......

Anybody been in a Barnes and Noble lately? The prices are pretty high (one concert they had was $45.99!) but they have the most obscure and diverse selection of blu-rays. They have discs I didn't even know existed...I'd bet they have discs Highdefdigest doesn't even know exist. Found the George Carlin show there for a decent price, and a couple other comedies that at 30% off made them worth picking up.
Also, for anyone who wants them, looks like Best Buy put out Event Horizon and Days of Thunder early. I picked up Days of Thunder, already have Event Horizon coming from Amazon.

You're 1 for 2 JaylisJayP
I was thinking about this a little more today...and it seems to me that I'm more like 1 1/2 for 2...or at least 1 1/4 for 2, since you didn't entirely hate the film. ;)

Days of Thunder early. I picked up Days of Thunder....
I got a $25 gift card for there for Christmas. Stopped by there last night and I know I must have sifted through their Blu-ray's 4-5 times. I swear I thought I was finding something new I had never seen at retail before every time I went back through them. They really had some weird titles.

Do you have a Comcast digital cable box that has HDMI? It'd be easiest to just pick up a cheap HDMI cable to handle the cable box and run the 360 through SAT.
Sorry I can't be of more help...I'm using HDMI for all of my audio. PS3 through the BD slot, HD DVD player through the DVD slot, and cable through the SAT slot.
As for the other issue...hmm....my 720 has done some weird stuff (no video through the PS3 to my TV - but when I hooked the PS3 straight up to the TV and bypassed the receiver it did work, similar to your issue) and I had to send it back to Circuit City under warranty, although after 2 weeks when I got it back, Circuit City said there was nothing wrong with it and they didn't do a thing. I took it home and it worked...leading me to believe sometimes you just need to "reset" these things. Unplug it and leave it off overnight. Last time I had a problem I did it with my receiver and TV and it seemed to fix the issue.
If that doesn't work and yours isn't under warranty, try calling Sony. I actually find their tech support to be very good, I've called on my receiver and PS3 multiple times.

Just go into settings on the touch then select WIFI it should show you all of the networks within its range. Then select that network and provide the password if you have it secured. It will remember it for the future. I have used my touch at my friends and it remembers their network settings every time I visit. If you don't see your network go to other network and type in your network name and password.

Sbrooks, regarding Days of Thunder....
PQ - Can't complain...mostly. Saw some dirt specs here and there, it's got a "gritty" catalog-type look to it, but it really does shine. Close-ups are razor sharp, colors are bold. I'd give the transfer a solid 85 out of 100.
AQ - Man, once that first engine roars, you know you're in for a treat. The TrueHD track doesn't disappoint. Good use of surround sound during the races, too. The sound is also a little "gritty" if that makes sense, but does it's job quite well.
Overall, if you're a fan of the movie, it's worth the upgrade without a doubt.

Blu-ray Disc Exceeds Expectations
Sales And Acceptance
Despite the economic downturn, consumers are embracing the Blu-ray Disc in impressive numbers. Greenfield and Zogby International conducted consumer surveys in December and found that Blu-ray Disc players and BD movies rank high on consumers’ gift lists. Greenfield found that BD players were the number one desired gift among HD display owners. Zogby found a nearly identical finding, putting a BD player as number two, just behind an additional HD display.
Numbers are not yet compete for the holiday season; I don’t expect those for another week or so. But indications are that the fourth quarter was better than BD advocates expected. I previously reported that consumers purchased nearly 149,000 dedicated Blu-ray players, excluding PS3s, during the week of Thanksgiving, a 300% increase compared to the same period in 2007. During 2008, discs have been selling briskly as well, doubling BD’s market share of the top twenty between March and mid-December.
http://media.cdn.dvdfile.com/images/stories/stills_jon/blu_ray_market_share_12_16_08.jpg
In October alone, more than 2 million Blu-ray Discs were sold. Another market survey group, the RedHill Group, reported that for the week ending December 6th, over 1.7 million BDs were sold in the U.S., almost 300,000 more than were sold Black Friday week. And then came The Dark Knight. Released on December 9, that one title alone sold more than a million Blu-ray Discs in the U.S. and 1.7 million Blu-ray Discs worldwide. With sales that strong for desirable and highly coveted titles, can blockbusters be far behind?
When DVD was young, enthusiasts clamored for Star Wars and the first three Indiana Jones films. Lucas and Spielberg waited for the installed base to grow sufficiently to make the films’ releases worthwhile. The first Star Wars film to be released on DVD was Episode 1: The Phantom Menace on October 16, 2001. The decision to prep the title for DVD was made when the installed base in the U.S. was approximately fourteen million players. The other five Star Wars films and the original Indiana Jones trilogy all came to DVD during the next four years. If we include PS3 game consoles, we are very nearly at fourteen million installed BD playback devices and we will far exceed that number in 2009. I’ll be very curious to see how well The Lord of the Rings trilogy, another highly coveted title, sells when it’s released in 2009. Big titles can only spur interest Blu-ray Disc.
Not surprisingly, just as DVD sales a decade ago cannibalized VHS sales, Blu-ray Disc sales are beginning to be perceived as eroding DVD sales. Pali Capital’s Richard Greenfield observed that DVD revenues are expected to fall 6% in 2008, rather than ending the year with previously predicted flat sales. He observed that, “Interestingly, two years into the standard DVD cycle, the DVD installed base was only 1.2 million and players were not nearly as inexpensive as $129 on Black Friday.” This alludes to the reality that BD is being accepted and purchased at a faster rate than DVD was for the comparable period in each format’s life cycle. By the end of 2008, dedicated BD player sales for the year are expected to reach 2.5 million units and are expected to double or triple in 2009. Sales of Sony PS3s are expected to reach 8 million game consoles by the end of December.
Blur-ray Disc also is doing well overseas. The British Video Association and market research firm Futuresource report that European sales are strong. In England, consumers purchased 462,500 Blu-ray Discs in November, and The Dark Knight sold more than 510,000 copies. Futuresource managing director of corporate development Jim Bottoms said, “Once people see the benefits of Blu-ray for themselves, they soon realize the difference it can make. We fully expect Blu-ray to keep on bucking the current economic trend and continue its rapid growth over the next few months and beyond, stimulated by falling prices and even more bundling deals with large-screen TVs.”
Overall Blu-ray Disc player sales are expected to more than triple in 2009, reaching 2.5 million players Europe-wide, excluding PS3s. In France, Blu-ray Disc's market share is expected to double in 2009. In Europe, over 6.5 million Blu-ray Discs have been sold to date; 2008 represents a growth rate of 320%.
And while all this is transpiring, the naysayers still clog the Web with dire predictions of Blu-ray Disc’s demise. When they cite DVD’s continued popularity, they demonstrate that they have no concept of market development. The last mainstream motion picture to be manufactured on VHS tape was 2006's A History of Violence; that was nine years after DVD was introduced. And here we are, less than one year after the format war was settled, less than a year after the BD specifications were sufficiently complete to manufacture profile 2.0 players, and with BD market acceptance running way ahead of DVD’s a decade ago. And the naysayers greatly underestimate the time it will take for the Internet’s infrastructure to be sufficiently robust to support widespread downloads of high definition content. And they are greatly imperceptive of the quality differences between Blu-ray Disc and any download service.
[B]
A Bad Idea Returns
Regular readers will recall that I was consistently critical of the HD DVD / DVD hybrid. It needlessly added cost to a high definition disc. DVD player owners and HD DVD player owners were being asked to pay a premium for dual formats when one will do. It was an impediment to consumer acceptance, although I don’t think it was responsible for HD DVD’s failure in the marketplace.
Now comes word that a similar hybrid of BD and DVD has been developed. Unlike HD DVD, which placed each format’s data on a separate side, this combo disc places the DVD content in a deeper layer on the same side as the BD content. It’s claimed that a BD player will be able to focus on the high definition layer(s), which are shallower. A DVD player is claimed to be able to focus through the high definition layer to the standard definition layer(s) beneath it.
For reasons that I’ve never fully understood, BDs have always been a tad more expensive than HD DVDs. I suspect it might be studio pricing policies rather than true reflections of costs; by contrast, Warner charged the same for HD DVD as it does for BD. BDs are frequently more expensive than DVDs, although for similar content for new films, the price differential very often drops to merely a few dollars. But if the studios decide to embrace this hybrid, and if they repeat the HD DVD mistake of releasing only hybrid BDs for specific titles, the cost of BDs will be driven higher. And that, particularly in our weakened economy, will be an impediment to BD sales and acceptance. Early reports indicate that for the initial marketing of these discs in Japan, there will be a 52% cost premium. Bad idea. Very bad idea.
I hope the studios are smart enough to ignore this technological development and concentrate on a more significant and more appealing developmental area: 3-D on BD. A really effective, full color BD system (that cannot be replicated on DVD without slaughtering resolution by being forced to apply field switching) will enhance further the appeal of BD as a home theater medium. What we don’t need right now is a price increase.
Parting Thoughts
There are reports that overall consumer spending dropped in 2008 when compared to 2007. Luxury items were hardest hit, and electronics as a group were reported to have decreased by 26% from last year’s holiday spending. And yet, Blu-ray Disc demonstrated significant growth, better than expect sales, and continues to run ahead of DVD for the same period in the two formats’ lifecycles. I’m simply delighted that Blu-ray Disc is doing so well, particularly in light of our weak economy. I fully expect that as consumer confidence returns in 2009, the format will enjoy accelerated growth. And we, as film enthusiasts and home theater hobbyists, will be able to enjoy the best high definition delivery system for many years to come. Still on the fence? Jump on the post holiday discounts. You'll be delighted you did.

Thanks for the tips. I'll be calling Sony tonight. Bugs me to no end when something doesn't work. Especially after it's been working fine for months.

Depends on who is doing the grading. I'd hardly say the Big Fish bluray was amazing.
Clearly your opinion isn't the one we are using because you just said Big Fish wasn't amazing. Sorry you don't count.
Wasn't it I who told you to go get this?
I bought it the first day it came out so I don't think you told me. Maybe God did....but not you.

quick question...will the geek squad or firedog still do installations if you didn't buy the equipment form them? i hired a guy to come out a few weeks ago to do some stuff but he never showed up and never answered his phone. for all i know, he's dead.
I'm sure they will, but I have no idea why you would have them do it. It isn't very complicated over all and you have the internet as a resource. My opinon of most of these services is pretty terrible. I don't think most of these people know more than the average person does and they charge stupid amounts of money.

Watched Shrek 3 and Forgetting Sarah Marshall the other day.
Shreak was really good PQ and AQ wise as to be expected with animation. I didn't really like the story that much, but it was still fine.
Sarah Marshall was surprisingly funny. I thought the PQ was a little soft, but good enough. The AQ was fine for a movie like this. I usually don't like those Aptow movies, but this one was good. I laughed quite a few times and my wife thought it was funny too. Oddly, there were more shots of weiner than boobs, which I was disappointed in. That made no sense.

i watched it this weekend but i thought it sucked...but did you think most of the backgrounds looked fake? even when they're sitting on the beach before mila's ex showed up...it just looked fake for some reason...

Nope you're 1 for 2. If you tell me that I absolutely MUST buy a movie then it has to be great. It's cut and dry it's either great or not....if it's not then you are awarded no points. Dark City was great. Immortal was not great.
I on the other hand am 2 for 2. I told everyone to buy Big Fish and Gone Baby Gone, which are both amazing films. You'll need to step your game up if you want to catch up.
Next time I'll distinguish between what I think is a good movie, and what is a good movie.
So for what actually is a good movie I'm 1 for 2.
For what I think is a good movie, I'm 2 for 2, and plan to stay undefeated for a long time.

I think comedy cinematographers just don't know how to deal with beach lighting. Heartbreak Kid also had bad cinematography where shots looks overexposed and the background looked fake.

Phase 3 of my home theatre is taking too long (window install - won't be happening until March so I've moved the plumbing and electrical to phase 3. :D ) For plumbing I'm getting a professional in to do it but I'm doing the electric myself. Basically moving lines so I can install drywall right to the ceiling joists and have 8 ft ceilings in the basement.
Picked up the lighting at Home Depot and have taken out a couple flourescent lights and replaced with normal track type lighting . Decided not to use pot lights, and I hate halogen lights so went with normal track type lighting, and they're dirt cheap, which is awesome.

From the bottom of the pile

But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
My words are like a rope
That's wrapped around my throat
Wash my mouth with soap
For words unfit to quote
I have lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta
Where they've got all hell for a basement
I have lost my way
But I hear a tale
About a heaven in Alberta

Now only time will prove
Yes only time will prove

Awesome, would have been nice if they carried a track of 4 or 5 bulbs but eh. Funny that they carry a billion styles of halogen track lights, but only 3 styles that use CFL bulbs, and one is just a different colour (white). Guess halogen's are just the in thing right now. I have a dream... and that dream is to have every light fixture in the house use the same type of light bulb.
That's a good song, I think they originally made it for Sask but changed their mind and settled with Alberta for the lyrics instead lol. :p

Agree and make sure they are Category 2 cables. Thats the problem I have been having because Monoprice was sold out 3 ft and 6 ft every color 1.3a HDMI Cat 2 cables. Had the regular 1.3a but not Cat 2.
