To have the proper bandwidth for the lattests audio mostly... personally, I wouldn't buy anything other than HDMI 1.3a or better cables, especially when they're as cheap as they are from monoprice.com (when in stock)
so it basically performes better audio?

HDMI doubles the bandwidth of the original and has opened the door for a host of potential new advancements in Home Theater Audio/Video performance. New features such a “Deep Color,” higher color gamut, and high resolution, multi-channel audio formats like Dolby True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio will make higher bandwidth demands than ever before.

Make sure you get the 1.3a HDMI CATEGORY 2 cables from Monoprice.
Here is the blue one. They are sold out pretty much everything Catergory 2 1.3a HDMI's. But I think they still have stock on the 1.3a one's.

Awesome, would have been nice if they carried a track of 4 or 5 bulbs but eh. Funny that they carry a billion styles of halogen track lights, but only 3 styles that use CFL bulbs, and one is just a different colour (white). Guess halogen's are just the in thing right now. I have a dream... and that dream is to have every light fixture in the house use the same type of light bulb.
Good luck on the same bulbs... especially if you decide to add a nice remote controlled light dimmer. I have yet to find a decently priced CFL dimmable bulb to date. And the damn regular ones are a ***** to get in with the frosted glass. :(

Looking good.. Here they are really pushing CFL's. I get calls from schools wanting to relamp using CFL's or T5's. Huge money saver for large schools.
LOL thats a good dream to have...
Yeah, here too and they sold me. I use CFL's everywhere in the house except the 2 bathrooms upstairs and the basement (which will obviously change soon). I buy mine at Costco because they put out a nice soft light. Our utility company puts little flyers in with our monthly bill for CFL bulbs. Anyway, that was a little OT.
Now that I'm doing wiring I guess I can run the speaker wire and HDMI cable to the future projector now.

Yeah, that's confusing. I looked at Home Depot for that too and don't get what can and can't be used with what. I want to have a dimmer in the main HT area though. I'll need to buy more bulbs for the new fixtures... hope Costco's are dimmable.

Well I figured out my 720 HDMI issue. I went out and bought a new 720. Hooked it up and it didn't work. So I thought to myself....could it be the HDMI cable going to the TV from the 720? So I pull out the TV and there's my PS3 menu!!! I push back the TV and it goes to black. So that was my problem. The HDMI from the 720 to the TV. I replaced it with a new Rocketfish HDMI that has the smooth finish and it works perfect now. I should have checked that in the first place. I just didn't want to have to pull out my 60" TV. One of the nice things about living in Florida is 2/3 of every house is tile instead of carpet, as is the case in my family room, so our TV slides pretty nicely in and out without much fuss....but yeah it's a pain climbing over wires and unplugging everything.
The receiver is obviously the worst since everything goes in and out of it...and there's nothing I hate more than having to re-attach 10 different speaker wires.

If anyone in the Toronto area was watching Global News about 3 weeks ago, they did a story on home theater cables.
This company in Brampton On. is making top quility cables (HDMI,video, audio, speaker).
In a test using an outside source they compared them with Monster. I'm not a electronic guy by any means.
The tests all showed that both cables were the same in different tests. Except that the Brampton company sells for a fraction of the cost.
The only problem is I didn't write the name of the company down. I went on Global news website and there is no archives for past stories. I emailed Global but haven't heard back yet.
Did anyone else see this story? Or know the company I'm describing?

You can easily program your 880 as long as the device has an IR port and the device is in their database or you have the remote to teach the 880. I taught my ONE to work my new electric fireplace. :)
I found it's best to switch with the remote when the switch is auto sensing, but then mt sat receiver is an 'always on' device.
Thanks for the offer Grif but I was looking for more ports and one that has an IR remote. Hoping I can program it to the 880 as part of the activities, anyone have success with that or is it even necessary if it's an autoswitching model? I found one on ebay that I like a lot that is 1.3b, cat.2..all of that good stuff.

My new years resolution is to only buy movies that I plan on watching immediately. I have a huge problem with movies staying in their wrappers and then when I have nothing to watch I STILL don't want to open them. So from now on only movies that will be watched within the week I buy them.
After a trip to Best Buy today I should break the 450 mark so theres no need buying movies I'm not going to watch when I have plenty others at home to see.

I try to get to the wrapped movies but usually they are wrapped for a reason. Either JR.com or Amazon.com did a deal, I said "hey I don't have that" and then I bought it with no intentions of ever watching it.
Hell I own "Blood & Chocolate" and I don't think a day will ever come when I'll want to watch it. I just don't see myself sitting down and being like "hmm whats a good movie to watch tonight....oh I know Blood & Chocolate".
So I gotta stop doing crap like that.

I tell myself this every time I buy a new blu-ray that sits in it's wrapper for a while.
I think my record is Talladega Nights, and technically I didn't buy it, it came free with my PS3. But I had it wrapped for almost 2 years I think before watching it last month.

Mine is to get back in shape. I was doing well but had a disc problem but now I am finally healthy to start lifting again.
Dont buy any BR's when they first come out because you know in a week or 2 after they will be on sale.
Possible get rid of all my HD DVD's and players. To free some room up in my rack.
Get healthier, and with the way I went at work today, this is a must.

I watched Black Mask tonight...always been a fan of the movie. After hearing all the horror stories panning the video, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It's not a top-tier release, but nearly all the close-ups are very sharp and clear....long shots are more murky. One of the biggest complaints was "wild, unchecked grain"...and I literally saw this in one scene for a total of maybe 10 seconds.
Audio was about average for a DTS-HD MA track.
I'd honestly give it a solid 3/5 for PQ, and 3.5/5 for AQ. At the $12.99 Best Buy has it for, it's a decent deal right now.

Talladega Nights BD pisses me off so much. It's the "Unrated and Uncut" edition... So they added scenes to the movie that were "too hot" for the theatrical cut. Wow, cool.
EXCEPT THEY ALSO TOOK OUT UNRELATED SCENES FROM THE MOVIE!!!
I've NEVER heard of that before! Who SUBTRACTS unrelated scenes from a theatrical cut to an unrated cut, and then doesn't even include them on the disc as an extra?!

I have Netflix, and I use it to rent ones I'm not sure about...like Han**** and Hell Ride, both of which I wouldn't have blind bought, and am glad I rented, among others. But I greatly enjoy having a collection and would only ever use Netflix as a supplement. Out of all the blu-rays I've purchased, I've only sold 2, AVP Requiem and Ultraviolet. The rest are movies I liked and have or will watch multiple times.

Since it's Miramax, it's probably tied up in the legal BS between Disney and Weinstein... I wouldn't expect a US version for a while yet.
Alliance in Canada has the distrbution rights to many of it's films ending very soon... thus they are kicking out cheap Blu-rays that aren't available in the US.
Assuming they are $18 in store, I should be able to grab these and ship them at a reasonable price for whomever wants it.... or someone in the US could do a bulk buy from amazon.ca.

For you PS3 guys who like to stream media from a PC, check out this program. I used it this morning and it's very fast. Much better than TVersity or Windows Media Player's server....
PS3 Media Server - http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c279/SBrooks2006/ps3-media-server.gif
PS3 Media Server is a DLNA compliant Upnp Media Server for the PS3, written in Java, with the purpose of streaming or transcoding any kind of media files, with minimum configuration. It's backed up with the powerful Mplayer/FFmpeg packages.
Current features
* Ready to launch and play. No codec packs to install. No folder configuration and pre-parsing or this kind of annoying thing. All your folders are directly browsed by the PS3, there's an automatic refresh also.
* Real-time video transcoding via MEncoder, tsMuxer or Avisynth
* DVD ISOs images / VIDEO_TS Folder transcoder
* OGG/FLAC/MPC/APE audio transcoding
* Thumbnail generation for Videos
* You can choose with a virtual folder system your audio/subtitle language on the PS3!
* All formats PS3 natively supports: MP3/WMA, JPG/PNG/GIF/TIFF, and all kind of videos (AVI, MP4, TS, M2TS, MPEG) the ps3 is willing to play
* ZIP/RAR files as browsable folders for pictures/audio files
* Preliminary support for pictures based feeds, such as Flickr and Picasaweb
* Preliminary Internet TV / Web Radio support with VLC, MEncoder or MPlayer

Although without HD DVD, I doubt I'd have jumped into HDM as early as I did. :)

Mounting a tv on the wall isn't too tough. You find where you want to put it on the wall and then find the two studs in the wall. You screw the two brackets on the wall, and then after you place the other brackets directly on the tv you put the tv on the wall brackets. I'd say it took no more than 30 minutes to mount a 50" plasma. Just have a level handy.

I should add this is for a fixed mount. Swivel mounts have a little bit different system of connecting the tv to the mount.

Not to get too off topic on the thread, but I have to say I agree with you. Really, what's the point of showing him anymore? Let it go honorably. Check monoprice.com for wall mounts. I have a stand for all my components under the TV. Install Wire Conduit on the Surface and you can paint it to blend in to hide any wires. Makes it look professional.

I was also confused by this. I mean hasn't his time sort of passed? Do people younger than 30 even know who he is? I just picture them being baffeled as to why this guy is on TV in his condition. Do people older than 30 still want to see him in that condition? Wouldn't they understand if he just didn't want to do it anymore?
And he was in HD at the NYE party I was at, so it really isn't off-topic. ;)

Wow it seems like it's been a hell of alot longer than 1 year.
I remember celebrating that day far more than I ever should have celebrated a simple studio shift.
It's a shame but a part of the fun got ripped out when HD DVD left. Don't get me wrong I wasn't a fan of HD DVD at all. I actually borderline hated it, on my list of things I wanted to see die it went....
1. Bin Laden
2. HD DVD
But with that being said I thought the little battlefields throughout the format war were really entertaining. Seeing 300 come out on both formats and wondering who would win with HD DVD's superior high def offering of the film. Pirates of the Caribbean going head to head against the Matrix. Then that amazingly beautiful Transformers week where I had to get like 20 movies for $10 each.
I miss that stuff. On the other hand I do not miss the spreading of misinformation and bickering.

Check monoprice.com for wall mounts. I have a stand for all my components under the TV. Install Wire Conduit on the Surface and you can paint it to blend in to hide any wires. Makes it look professional.
Do they make mounts with a shelf under them? I don't really have a place for or want a stand. Or I should say the wife doesn't.

And he was in HD at the NYE party I was at, so it really isn't off-topic. ;)
but if he insists on continuing, how do you tell him no?
i watched the local dallas NYE party, and it wasn't too bad. some bigger name bands would help, but it looked like they got a pretty good crowd for a fairly new event.

As with any shelf....it all depends on what it is secured to. If you secure them straight to the studs....I'm sure they'll hold anything.....if you just use drywall screws...I'd be leary of putting too much weight on it as it might just rip out the drywall and leave you with a hole in your wall....and broken components.

See...it was truly the best time for format neutral high-def enthusiasts. While some were getting Transformers and others were getting all those blu-rays for cheap, I was getting both.
I'm still sad about HD DVD dying. I dont want to (sniff, sniff) tear up on you (blows nose on shirt), but I'll always hold (farmer's blow on the computer monitor) a special place in my heart for those maroon little fellas.

I guess I consider having someone get me a movie from Canada genuine effort. It would seem that you wanted that movie a lot, but not enough to keep it. Did you get it just to watch it once on blu-ray? Seemed like more of a movie you wanted to keep in your collection than watch once and sell off.

Last time I checked.....Canada wasn't some war torn wasteland....where someone would risk life and limb to go to a Futureshop and buy a Blu Ray and then drop it in the mail. Scott has my gratitiude for doing it (and some of my money towards his nifty little Dark Knight Steelbook )....but that doesn't mean I'm obligated to keep it for life. Yes...I watched it just once. I was planning on keeping...but just like Robocop...it is extremely dated.....and going back to visit it wasn't as nostalgic as I thought it would be. Anything else?
Yes....I got the PM....just haven't had a chance to respond...or look up prices for it...or anything like that. I really prefer for someone to just say..I have it...you want it...it's $20. I hate the "what would you like to pay" routine. What would I like to pay.......how about "nothing"....that would be a great pricce....just give it to me. Got Wedding Crashers, Days of Thunder and Ghost from Amazon today.
Days of Thunder - looks pretty good, very gritty Top Gun-like PQ, Top Gun was probably better though, TrueHD is adequate, not bad
Wedding Crashers - mild disappointment here for one of my favorite movies, PQ is ok, Thank you Warner Bros for putting 2 separate encodes for the regular and Uncorked editions on the disc, sacrificing space and bit rates for both, instead of using seamless branching. AQ is decent for a comedy. Still disappointed... :(

Cage is indeed my least favorite actor. He runins every movie for me. His character is the same in every movie. He never changes at all. I hate him and in fact have boycotted all movies he has been in since 2006. Last movie I saw with him in it was National Treasure.
I pray all the time that he doesn't get cast in a movie franchise I actually care about, as I would be unable to watch said movie.

I hear you... this board is everything I like... Toys, Comics, Games, and Entertainment...
ugh I hope its back up for a while

good to finally get on the boards.
I watched the latest Hulk movie lastnight... friggin a I love HD movies... I can't believe how great these movies look...
I've got WallE coming this weekend... cant wait to watch it
Yeah Hulk looks and sounds amazing! Definitely one of those movie you can pop in just to impress friends who come over.
I also want to order Wall-E off of Amazon.com but don't know what cheap blu ray movie I can add on to get the free shipping. Even worse now that Amazon raised their prices for their stupid B2G1 free sale.
Also since last I was on here. Watched Sleeping Beauty and Speed Racer (gifts to the kids for x-mas). I know lots of people like how Sleeping Beauty looks but the movie bored me to sleep. Speed Racer was some nice eye candy but for sure the story sucks all sorts of ass.

Really wish the board could stay up for a full 24 hours.
Anyone see anything cool coming out of CES this week? I haven't seen anything that really grabbed my attention. Some new super-thin displays is about it.

Can someone with the Onkyo 705 or 805 post what their speaker levels are. I redid mine but they sound low. This is what they are currently
Center - +2
Left - +2
Right +2
Surrounds +1
But now it seems to low.
Thanks

Things I thought were insteresting:
1. Toshiba will put Cell into tvs for SUC
2. 4K tvs from Tosh
3. 3D game demo on PS3
4. Blu-ray profile 3.0 (audio only)

Is there actually anything to this movie or is it just another bizarre movie where it seems like someone managed to get these big names in a movie but the movie itself is bacially about nothing and makes no sense?

Now the release is looking like Spring 09', It was delayed from Fall 08'. I'm not too worried about it though because it is a movie that they have to make on bd.

I watched Han**** last night....Not impressed at all. The picture quality was great but the movie itself just wasnt great in my opinion. Some funny moments no doubt but the movie itself made no sense. I know superhero movies are meant to be unrealistic but this one went even beyond that.

Watched some movies...
The Mummy 3 - 6/10
X-Files 2 - 4/10
X-Files felt like watching just another episode. Nothing about it screamed out "Hey, this deserves it's own movie!". It was okay for one viewing but can't see myself watching it again for 5 years or so.
Mummy 3 was a little better than 2 but not nearly as good as 1. So yeah.

No Country For Old Men left me so empty. I never got into it and the ending was terrible. I literally kept waiting for that "grab me" moment of the film that I assumed was there based on all the hype and it never came. Also keep in mind that I took a lot of film classes in school so I can appreciate a film as art and this movie was just flat out bad.

Hey Prime, Costco.ca will be having a $400 price reduction on the Optoma HC815 1080p between Jan 26th to Feb 8th if you're still looking for a projector. Problem is it's not on their site yet so don't know what the starting selling price will be.
I seriously need to do some projector research but am inclined to get another Optoma because I was always impressed with the old 720p.

How often to you guys "Tweak" your electronics. Either PQ or AQ?? Seems like I do it pretty much every time I watch a movie or if I am bored and have nothing else going on.
I am always ajusting the PQ or fooling with the AQ. Checking connections. Am I the only Freak that does that?

Haha, I love how you find meaning in a post that isn't even there.
Movies don't require a "hype" moment. What I'm saying is that I kept hearing this film was so great. I went into it with high expectations and was ready to be entertained. I sat there for the entire movie wondering when the good movie I heard about was going to start. This movie had no discernable storyline or ending. Seriously, what the hell was this movie about anyway? It was a waste of time to me. But hey, to each his own.

I noticed I do it quite a bit when I'm watching dvds on my PS3 and the upscaler setting. Sometimes the upscale simply is too...sparkly...if that makes sense. The reds/yellows tend to be oversaturated so I do tweak the colors here and there.

Seriously, I understand your point about the "emptiness" but I think that's what the entire theme was based on. Sometimes in life, there are no immediate resolutions to life's problems...sometimes you gotta learn to deal with ****. Hence what made the ending so poetic is that very point...as dire as it may have been.

I absolutely loved NCFOM. Javier Bardem was outstanding and created one of my favorite villians of all time. His delivery of some lines had me shaking and the scene with the gas station attendant always stands out with me.
The only thing that bothered me was that we didn't see what went down with Llewelyn at the motel.
