Yeah I know....I was at that game...only Redden, Comrie and McAmmond played the game with the sticks...In warmup....Schubert, Volchenkov and maybe 1 other guy had them...

I guess the other guys all used them in practice at some point....the reason Id like to see Spezza are because his sticks are pretty cool....crazy work done on the blade and they are wood....It would be a pretty cool stick if it was actually customized....rather than a generic Sherwood painted pink

long read about the Bobby Orr jersey on Classic

asically, Orr himself questions not whether the jersey is legit, but whether it was worn in the Stanley Cup Finals... either way, it's an interesting read:

Hall of Fame journalist Russ Conway thought that something was amiss when I told him about an online auction being conducted for a Bobby Orr game-worn Jersey from Game 6 of the Stanley Cup final in 1972.

The jersey he saw advertised was supposedly photo-matched to a picture of Orr drinking from the Stanley Cup.

As proof of authenticity, Classic Auctions of St. Constant, Que., boasts of "numerous team repairs. . . . There are 11 on the front; mostly pea and dime-size affairs, along with a couple of wide one-inch jobs. A 12th, measuring an inch by two inches repaired a rip at the base of the six eyelets." There is also a description of "a drop of blood in the white of the Bruins tackle twill crest (at the lower left tip of the "B"), pilling/wear at the cuffs, mainly the left, and significant interior pilling in the arms, shoulders and number regions."

But to Conway, who covered Orr and the Bruins for the Lawrence Eagle Tribune from 1968 to his retirement in 2005, something about the jersey's provenance didn't seem right. "Why would anyone want to sell such a valuable item?" he asked himself. So Conway contacted Orr, who's now a player agent, about what is being advertised by Classic Auctions as "our beyond-any-doubt photo match" for the sweater.

Sure enough, Orr produced his own version of the famous No. 4 black Bruins article in his own memorabilia -- collected during his brilliant career that stretched from 1967 to 1976. For Conway, the provenance of the featured product -- now fetching a bid of $89,542 US -- was in serious doubt. (The auction concludes March 27.)

Orr described to Conway how he had been given the jersey in question shortly after the famous game from his close friend, the late Bruins trainer Frosty Forrestal.

"He said that Frosty would never let him wear a ragamuffin jersey with so many rips and tears in a playoff game. Forrestal was also meticulous about blood. . . . There is no way the jersey would not have been washed. Frosty and Bobby were very close friends, lived together for a time. In my opinion, there is no way Frosty would have given his friend anything less than the genuine article."

Having discovered the auction item might not be as advertised, Conway sought out the unnamed consignor who offered the sweater for sale. That led him to a businessman who works in financial banking services in Toronto.

In a taped interview done with his permission, the businessman says he received the jersey as a gift in the 1970s from a Toronto lawyer who was also a sports agent at the time. (He denies it was Orr's former agent, Alan Eagleson). Recently, he decided to get an evaluation on the jersey and turned to Classic Auctions, who've conducted auctions for a number of NHL greats including Marcel Dionne, Henri Richard and Jean Beliveau.

The businessman said he never told Classic Auctions it was the jersey from the 1972 game. He had no specific idea when or where it had been worn. To his delight, the evaluators at Classic Auctions informed him that, after a photo search of the picture from that day in 1972, they determined his keepsake was the very same jersey Orr had worn in the game as the Bruins won their second Cup in three years. Better yet, they said he might fetch as much as $200,000 US on the market.

Arrangements were made to sell the jersey online at the Classic Auctions site. The auctioneers raved about their jersey: "Let's cut to the chase; Bobby Orr WORE THIS JERSEY WHILE DRINKING FROM THE STANLEY CUP on May 11th, 1972 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Bobby had earlier scored his second Stanley Cup-winning goal in three years WHILE WEARING THIS JERSEY, as the Bruins beat the Rangers 3-0 to take the Cup finals in six games."

Marc Juteau runs Classic Auctions with his brother Claude. When contacted by the Herald Friday, he claimed his business was "still behind (the verification) 100 per cent." Asked if he was withdrawing the item till its provenance could be verified, Juteau said, "We're waiting to see what Mr. Orr says. . . . Right now, we haven't been compelled to do anything."

As of press time, Juteau was sticking with his statements. Conway says that memorabilia experts and the Bruins' other trainer, Dan Canney, firmly believe that, "in their opinion, there is no way the jersey in question could be the one being advertised."

While the jersey may be a game-worn article, perhaps from the regular season, Conway and his experts point to the 12 repairs done on the Stanley Cup finals jersey as incompatible with Forrestal's fastidious procedures for that time of the year. "Dan Canney told me there's no way he and Forrestal would ever let Orr step on the ice for a finals game looking like a ragamuffin in a torn jersey," Conway told the Herald.

The Orr jersey controversy serves as an illustration of the risks and uncertainties connected with the sports memorabilia market, which grows daily via charity auctions and for-profit operations such as Classic Auctions. As the Orr jersey shows, even the most authentic-sounding items can be disputed, rendering an expensive purchase to an ill-advised investment.

According to the FBI: "Industry experts estimate that the autographed memorabilia market in the United States is approximately $1 billion per year. Co-operating subjects and memorabilia experts estimate forged memorabilia comprises over $100 million of the market each year."

Tomorrow we'll look at what happened to alumni of the old Minnesota North Stars, who suddenly discovered their personal medical and legal files on sale at a sports auction.

It is so true. You have to be a fan of the player to pay the price. I mean I probably would have for Belanger(I'm broke though with his ass getting traded every other day) but that is still a steep price.

I said to my Dad though. I'd put a bid on Cammalleri, Burke and Garon if it is the only bid. My father paid a hell of a lot more for the Laperriere Pink Stick last year then a 250 bid this year.

Agree. If your selling them on ebay, you also should allow paypal and not have all those conditions on bidding. I can see why they set up that way, but in the long run the few non payer's they would have gotten, would have been more than made up with more people bidding. Scared me off on getting one. Will wait and see if they get change it up for the one's that didn't sell and lower the opening bid.

I just got me som game used sticks from Kristian Huselius, Daymond Lankow, Jaime McLennan. I bought all three for $150 at the flames fan attic on Thursday. I did try to get them signed by thr players after the game but all three left. I was kinda hoping McLennan would at least sign. I expected Huselius not to sign as his wife had a baby this wek. I did not even see Lankow, I think they are a great addition to my recent start to collecting game used items. This is gonna be addicting...lol

Wow, nice pickup. They must have gotten some new inventory, and $150 for 3 sticks is a great deal (especially for Huselius, Langkow, and goalie stick). Normally I see them for $70-$90 a piece... any pics? I'm assuming Huselius and Langkow are both Bauer XXX Vapors; does McLennan still use a Sherwood these days?

McLennan uses SherWood and you are right on the money with the other 2, I will get picks up soon, I will take pics shortly. The "Noodles" goalie stivk was $30, Lankow was $20 and Huselius was $95, the most costly, but I was soo happy to get them I may buy a Hamrlik for $20 next time I go, he uses sherwood as well.

Iggy's are $3500 from Meigray.. there's one on ebay right now, the old style.. it was originally $1700 and didn't sell from a collector, then captainjerseys bought them and doubled the price, like nearly everything he gets.. but if you offer close to the original price, he might bite.. I'm still kicking myself for not buying a Phaneuf GU stick from the Fan Attic last year, when they were $125 :( Likely a good thing though; my GU stick collection hasn't really taken off, so financially, it was probably for the better :D

This stuff is like crack I tell ya... I dabbled years ago by getting a Jeff Garcia GU Calgary Stampeders jersey off eBay, but started taking a bigger interest after the 04 playoff run (thanks to brew :p). I've sold a few in the past year or two, bought a few new ones, and now have about 10 game worns in my collection (mostly Flames, but also a couple of Blue Jays jerseys thrown into the mix). If I wasn't saving up for a new house, I'd probably have a lot more!

Can anyone help me out with these 2 Coffey sticks? Anyone know if the sellers are legit?

With the first stick, I've never seen Coffey use black tape on the blade and the tape job on the end looks all wrong. Coffey usually uses a much bigger knob at the end.

For the second one I've never seen Coffey use white tape for the knob on the end of his stick. As far as I know he always uses Black for the knob and white on the blade.

I just started getting game used stuff so I dont have a lot. These are actually my first two Avs jerseys. Right now I just have them hanging in my closet until I get situated with where I am going to live. The house I am living right now is for sale and if it sells I either have to get an apartment of my own or move to charlotte. Usually, game wear on a hockey jersey consists of stick marks, from black hockey tape (although not so much these days with the "new" NHL). On a goalie shirt, you may see puck marks as well, although these are usually lighter and less obvious. Board burns are usually on the shoulder and sleeve, and basically looks like small patches of discoloration where the texture is different. Hard to describe, but I'm guessing there won't be much on a goalie shirt (since they don't get checked into the boards). Repairs are just that -- sewing to repair a hole or tear in a shirt... pretty self-explanatory; again, not as common on a goalie shirt. Most repairs are relatively small, although fighters sometimes have larger tears near the neck. Something that you might want to look for is post paint (red paint across the back or along the sleeve), from the goalposts. Also, check the inside and outside for pilling, and check the fight strap for salt and/or corrosion in the metal snaps (depends on the player and how long the jersey has been used).

melting is a board burn, but it IS very unusual that a goalie runs up against the boards at a high enough speed..

I love the marks on my Geli's, a little bit of everything on each jersey, although my last ones had holes that should have been repairs.. collectors seem to judge by repairs and not holes.

The most I have paid so far was $600 .Thats for my Magadan jersey its a 1986 Goodman and Sons.He played 1st base for the Mets in 13 games that year and the jersey was worn all year.These jerseys are next to impossible tot find and a month after that season ended they were given to a Goodwill in New York.The David Wright picture that I have signed in the crappy frame I took last year when me and my wife attended the turn back the clock game against the Colorado Rockies.I had it signed through LockerRoom Memorbilia.They have the rights to fis signature.Its the only one in existence and I took the photo.That is where the 4 balls are from and the game used 3rd base.I bought all of them off of Steiner Sports.I have the Mets 2002 9-11-01 jersey game worn by coach Randy Nieman.I have the jersey and pants game worn when the Mets played the Royals in 2004 im waiting for the hat.That cost me $550.The Darren Oliver was worn in games last year Ag 19 and 20th I have the pants he wore coming any day now along with a tbc hat that Mets 2nd baseman /ss Chris Woodward wore.My 2 playoff jersey ran me total about $900 they are also from Steiner..Also the 2 lineup cards are from the TBC game Aug 19 and 20th.

Pretty safe to assume that's the jersey Magadan wore the night the Mets clinched the East against the Cubs. The night he made his 1st Major League start and went 3 for 3.

They had many sticks when I went, Hamrlik, Phaneuf, Huselius, Nilson, McCarty, Noodles, Langkow, Stuart, Ritchie, those are the ones I can remember, They got stock in sporadically is what I was told.

Haven't the Mets used a Cubans throwback jersey in 04 and 06??? That is a cool jersey and hat.

I think Wild only sell their jerseys at the team store and maybe a season ticket holder type sale during the off season.

Meigray now has up the 2005 Eagles black alternates. Including McNabb and Westbrook. Not sure how long they have been there, I just noticed them today.

yeah, when they have their Expo in June or July, they have their summer sale then. Last couple of times it's been 50% off of any jersey that's not a consignment.. I think I may drop my blue Gelinas and take a chance on that being around for the summer sale.. a blue and two white ones were around for last year's sale..

They have a summer sale after there expo in New Jersey. I think it's mid July this year. They will then post the sale that night. Last year was my first one. They had buy one get one free on most stuff. Something like 50% off all equipment and teams like the NY Giants and Texas Rangers. The Dallas Mavericks stuff was 25% off. The stuff they have with little * next to them are on consignment and are not discounted. Who knows what they will have for sale this summer. Seems they have moved a ton of old stock this year. Some teams don't have nearly as much as before.
