What is the sync button on the Wii for?

I noticed it when I was putting my SD Card in it's slot.

its for when you get extra controllers. You have to sync your new remotes with it so the wii knows that the new remotes are primarily for that wii. There's another sync button in the remote too. Its underneath the battery cover.
