...That a rational person doesn't have a right to their opinion(some times beliefs). saying " I have a right to my opinion" is basically saying I'm right you're wrong. A rational person would change sides if all evidence was supporting the opposing side more effectively. or other words: student relativism. just thought I'd share. Philosophy is pretty out there, pisses alot of students off.

That's exactly right, unless the person's opinion is directed at a feeling such as one's favorite color or the attractiveness of another human these things can't be measured due to the fact that they are products of upbringing and brain chemistry thus they are subjective.
if you don't mind me asking, what are you going to do with your education.

If someone chooses to stick to their opinion regardless ofevidence, then they can hardly be called a rational person.
However, how evidence is interperated is often slanted or misinterperated to support their pre-conceived opinion.

I really just use the old "that's my opinion" line to stay out of unwanted arguments, and it works fairly well. I find my own opinions changing, perhaps, too often which makes me feel wishy washy and ungrounded.
Man, analyzing yourself sucks. Go eat it, Tom Cruise. Catherine Bell is still hot though.
What?

Yes, that's absolutely right. If an idea comes along that I agree with, I'll switch sides if it's better than my already formed opinion.
It's never happened before, but I'm open to the concept.
Quick question: Is your philosophy professor one of those types that gives you lots of abstract concepts as a way relating the material, or do you actually have to read actual philosophy? I prefer the second kind. The last thing I want to pay college tuition for is to have some ******* who couldn't do so they teach forcing his/her own personal **** down my throat.

I know exactly what you mean theology and ethics professors are even more guilty of that self-indulgent crap.

Wait, it took a college philosophy class for you guys to realize that we have the ability to change our minds? You guys have been listing to the presidents "stay the course" speeches too much

That's why I hate a lot of my peers who are college students. Just because someone taught you something in class doesn't mean it is right and completely fact. I think what professors biggest problems are is that they don't teach all perspectives, they just teach the ones they think are right.
The only person I've had so far who doesn't teach like that was a criminology professor that I took last semester. I actually LEARNED something in that class.

Hopefully you realize that philosophy classes are a big waste of time and just an excuse for the school to suck more money from you.

The only skills you get from Philosophy are writing and a better abililty to present an argument. The rest of it is B.S. If you want to know why your poop floats or sinks take a physics course. I took PhD level philosophy courses as electives in graduate school just because it mainly involved reading, writing papers and discussing crap which is a hell of a lot easier than the other elective courses. They generally only had like 4 or 5 people in the class though, which made them very hard to ditch.

The ones that floats are very starchy. The ones the sink are generally because you've eaten a good deal of meat.

philosophy is good.
i don't see it as a waste of time or money, unless you're there just to fill a spot.
people could say that watching comedies or whatever is a waste of time and money.
toy collecting could be called a big waste of time and money.
coming to this place....

Watching comedies, toy collecting, or coming here isn't something you pay to do with the expectation of learning something.
Going through a college / university course is.

When I took my first philosophy course my instructor told our class about the process in which "philosophers" made money during the Greek times
Something along the lines of "they all predicted crop seasons for the farmers and made bets about the rain"
lol.. More like they all predicted and mades bets about which man was cheating on their boyfriends in Athens..
