OT - Best AntiVirus software?

My subscription for Norton Antivirus 07 is expiring in 3 days and instead of just renewing my year, I'm considering looking for another program for my protection needs. Although it's the most known company name for virus software, my main pet peeve w/ Norton is that it sllllooooowwwwwssss down my cpu pretty good. And I'm really getting annoyed at that....8+ mins for start up? :mad:
I picked up a CA Internet Security 07 (because it was on sale -- yeah, not a good way to buy software ;) ).....but now I'm having 2nd thoughts after reading a couple of reviews online.

Anyone got firsthand experience in a very, very good antivirus prog that won't kill my cpu resources...? Thx for any info.

My entire College uses it. :cool:

The negative part is that it might cause you some trouble when trying to download files. It will even give you a hard time with your e-mail. :rolleyes:

If u download the spyware scan make sure u update it and ur gonna have to restart ur PC. after it restarts update it again. After u run a Full System Scan some items will say Delete some will say Ignore and some will say quarantine. make sure they all say Delete :D

AVG, huh? And free.....somehow that actually scares me. Anyone tried Avast which I see is another free antivirus? I take it no one has ever had issues using AVG? :confused:

Here at work, we used nortons.

A while back, the system was acting up, so just out of curiosity we installed AVG and it picked up 3 viruses that nortons didn't.

Never had a problem here or at home since.

Thx, I was looking at that & it had some favorable reviews (weird looking gui though)....but decided to go w/ AVG instead (went w/ the majority of the people - most downloaded prog). ;)

I suggest AVG all the way. We use McAffee at our work and it is a processor hog, and it doesn't obey the metrics you set, and it just plain blows. McA is up in the top when it coems to virus DAT releases, they usually have a fix pretty close to being first, with the other companies marginally slower and a dutch (I beleive) AV software soming in first. Anyway, AVG has always been my favorite, even AVG free is better than Norton or McAffee if they still offer it.

I like Avast simply because it doesn't lag my games and other software when I have it on. Heck, it seems to use little cpu power at all..even while scanning.

Never tried AVG though..maybe one day.

Here's an update on AVG: less than 4 hrs installing it....while I was on a site listening to music, all of sudden got a pop-up to download some protection software (non-related to AVG). :mad: I'll chalk it as a non-incident in the meantime & reserve judgement on the program & just blame the site I was on for the moment. But, still testing it.....

Ok guys.....so far so good w/ AVG. What I did also is to have that along w/ ZoneAlarm for a Firewall.....works solid so far. Thanks again for the suggestion. :)

And then when it expired, it kept bombing me so often with warnings and popups to resubscribe for another year it was like a damn virus, and I couldn't get rid of it! It wouldn't uninstall! I had to dig up the old install disc to finally erase the thing from my computer. Such a hassle and a load of trash.

Yeah, Norton is the worse in leaving stuff on your system.....however, they do have a removal tool you can use to remove all of those things completely -- they hide it in their website but it's there.
