Not looking good so far for the Padres. Rockies are up 3-0 in the 2nd.
It would be nice to see the Rockies make it to the playoffs. If they do make watch out they are for sure hot.

On a statistical note the Gonzalez GS gave him 30 HR's and 100 RBI's on the year.

I'm not sure if you're talking about simply his season total, or his official season stats. The stats tonight do not count towards official 2007 season stats as it's considered a postseason game.

Yes they do. They count tonight. If you look at the box scores they're credited for the regular season, and the announcers also stated that they'd count as well for the regular season.

Why would they allow 2 teams worth of players to have an extra game to add to their stat totals?
Durstlimpbizkit
10-01-2007, 06:32 PM
Why would they allow 2 teams worth of players to have an extra game to add to their stat totals?
Well I look at it this way, neither one of these teams are technically in the playoffs yet. They are playing an extra game (regular season) to decide whether or not they actually seal a playoff berth. So by that logic, I think is why these stats count for the regular season.

I'm cheering for the Padres. With Jake Peavy throwing 115+ pitches tonight, there's no way he'll pitch any sooner than game 3, which likely means that would be the only time the Phillies would have to face him. Chris Young has really struggled since coming off the DL, so I like that match-up. The Rockies offense scares me more than the Padres do. Either way, I can't wait until Wednesday!

It's too bad because the Rockies won the head-to-head series this season against the Padres, I don't even know why they played this game. The Padres will go into the playoffs and do nothing as usual while the Rockies who could have done some damage will be sitting at home. As a baseball fan, this sucks.

Alright, rewatching the replay, it does appear his hand slips in under the shoe and catches the back of the rectangular part of the plate with his fingers.
As far as the delayed call. Barrett has him dead to rights with the tag before he gets to the plate. On all plays at the plate, the umpire waits to see if the ball is caught by the catcher. Barrett drops it, ump makes the call.

gotta give Holliday the benefit of the doubt. Looked close enough to me and the Rockies deserved to win to win this game after the run they've had. I'm pulling for them and may actually head to a playoff game.

I've watched enough hockey games to know it was "Sandstorm" by Darude. I swear it's a requirement to play that song every other stoppage of play in the NHL.
Well you're wrong lol. I know Sandstorm by heart, that wasnt it.

Watch all of your replays again. Yes, he did tag him on his knee as he was laying there. DVR is great. The view from 3rd base shows he wasn't even close to the plate. Again, DVR is great.you are correct. thank you.

I agree....I noticed this as well after watching the replays.
And now...two of the hottest NL teams meeting in the first round of the playoffs?!? Should be fun to watch.

To each his own. I'll take electro though.
And upon further review, Zombie Nation is correct.

I know you are going to stick to your story just because of the fact that you like to be argumentative, but I'll let you hash it out with someone else. I mean, you are arguing with something that is clear on video. Rediculous. Later.

"I don't know. He hit me pretty good," Holliday said. "I got stepped on and banged my chin. I'm all right."
Said Padres manager Bud Black: "It looked to me like he did get it."
black's comment could be out of context, but it sounds like he thought holliday had it

And add that McClelland always has a delayed call.
It's hard to call on the replays and yes, I have DVR. It looks like the hand may have got underneath Barrett's foot from the view beyond third base. The view from behind the plate, you can't see home plate. If it was a football review, the call on the field would stand. :D

The problem with video review is this... CAN they blow a whistle and tell everyone to FREEZE! Then IF he's ruled not safe- yet the ball came out they blow the whistle and then it's a race to the bag or what??? It still is inconclusive evidence to overrule the umpire.

official rules 7.06 (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/runner_7.jsp)
(b) If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call “Time” and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction.
Rule 7.06(b) Comment: Under 7.06(b) when the ball is not dead on obstruction and an obstructed runner advances beyond the base which, in the umpire’s judgment, he would have been awarded because of being obstructed, he does so at his own peril and may be tagged out. This is a judgment call.
NOTE: The catcher, without the ball in his possession, has no right to block the pathway of the runner attempting to score. The base line belongs to the runner and the catcher should be there only when he is fielding a ball or when he already has the ball in his hand.
some more rules.. (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/definition_terms_2.jsp)
Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered “in the act of fielding a ball.” It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the “act of fielding” the ball. For example: If an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner.
now whether mclelland knows the rules or not i dont know.. but to me the correct call was made..

The italicized rule should be thrown out there. Put it on ESPN, to stop the controversy.
I am really glad to see the NL West being the Majority of the NL.
If it comes down to Arizona and the Rockies... let the best team win. Though the Dodgers aren't there I'm still very happy.

Everytime I see Hoffman pitch, he blows a save. I have no idea how he could be there closer after this season. He may (should) retire. His fastball is no longer hard. He averaged 84 MPH. Thats not good for a closer. I know he is the all-time saves leader, but it has to end sometime. I can see Heath Bell as a closer. He was down right nasty tonite.

I don't care either way. I'm a Cubs fan and last night's game had zero bearing on my life or who the Cubs would play. So here's my take:
I watched the whole game. When Holliday slid home live, I thought he was out. But that was the long camera view. When I watched the closer camera view, you see that Barrett blocked the entire plate without the ball (#1), Barrett dropped the ball (#2), Holliday's hand slid right to where the plate was, not around it (#3), dust flew up during the slide (#4). All of these things made for a hard play to call.
I think McClelland made the right call. Barrett was blocking the plate without the ball and if he would have been OFF the plate, he would have been in a better position to catch the ball. Holliday should have trucked over Barrett, that would have eliminated all of this. But he slid and his hand went right to the plate. Had Barrett not been blocking it without the ball, Holliday's hand would have easily touched the plate.
Also, if you watch the replay over and over you still can't say for certain that he did/didn't touch the base. So how do you expect the ump to see it with dust, at full speed, on the fly?
Either way the call would have gone, I wouldn't say it was a bad call. It was so close and the ump looked like he was in position expecting a collision. It was so close, you just have to trust judgment.

Something else...how good is it to see Todd Helton finally get a shot at the playoffs....without having to be traded to boston or NY.

He missed the plate, Barrett had every right to take the position he did as the was in the act of fielding a ball in the air, but I'm glad he called Holliday safe.

Perhaps I'm not understanding something, but that's sort of why he's out there.
