It's been almost five years since Red Sox president Larry Lucchino labeled the Yankees "The Evil Empire." It was a great line, and sportswriters everywhere remain indebted to him. But let's frame its context. His utterance followed the Yankees' signing of Jose Contreras, a move that once again demonstrated the Empire's capacity for expensive folly. Still, one imagines Lucchino vowing it would never happen again.

Save for a withering owner, the Red Sox are not at all unlike their former nemesis. They are an empire of their own now. And if you rooted for the Red Sox because they weren't the Yankees, aren't you now obligated to root for the Indians?

Do the math. Add the salaries of C.C. Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, Grady Sizemore, Franklin Guttierrez, Jhonny Peralta, Chris Gomez, Rafael Betancourt, Rafael Perez and Ryan Garko.

Now what do you have?
About a half million less than J.D. Drew.

Yea, everyone gets on Yankees for buying talent. But when you look at rosters before September call ups. The Yankees had FAR more home grown players on the team. Boston had about 4, Yankees around 12. And dont forget the Mets getting old stars past their prime. Delgado, Green, Glavine, Lo Duca, Pedro, Alou, just to name a few

I hate Boston more than NY. They win ONE World Series in 100 years and they suddenly think they are the greatest franchise ever... and their spending is close enough to NY's.

I would hate winning teams too if I never had a day without rain and all pro sports in my area sucked , the best move the sonics ever make is getting the hell outta there.

The reason the Red Sox and Yankees do it is to get back at each other, and they have the resources to do it. Red Sox try to get A-Rod, can't work out a compensation deal with the PA, and then the Yankees scoop him out from under them. To fight that, the Sox go get Curt Schilling. Last year, the Yankees go out and sign Johnny Damon for no other reason than to spite the Sox. This year the Sox bid a bajillion dollars to get Daisuke Matsuzaka (so the Yankees won't get him) and so the Yankees go and sign Kei Igawa (hehe :D). It's a constant one upping.

You know the Yankees are gonna go hard after Schilling this year, if for no other reason than to take him from the Red Sox.

Ahhh, nothing like the old "I can't dispute the article, so I'll attack whatever team the poster likes." Very clever

And the Spartans aren't boring, they're chokers who can't close out a game. Get it right ;)

You should make a thread with a poll for most hated NFL team. I'm interested to know if it will end up being Pittsburgh, Dallas or New England.

I won't argue that the Sox spend alot of money to try and one-up the Yanks , but if you look at the ratings , baseball is killed with a non Red sox or Yankee World series.

That's part of the article. The fans have become worse than Yankee fans ever were.

Why not spend on talent?
Would it be preferable for a championship team to sell everyone off and go back to sucking for 50 years?
I'd rather see my team spend on talent than more trips to Cancun for the directors and thier families.

When I went to Boston in 2001 to see a game at Fenway I was asked where I was from (Minnesota) and if i was a fan of the Yankees about 10 times. Same trip I went to Yankee Stadium and was asked where I was from and if I was in town for Puckett going into the hall of fame.

clever, you changed a letter of my name to make it something else.

I think it means just the opposite, there are more bandwagoners (even Bill Simmons, a huge New England sports homer admits this). And why would you take it as a compliment that the teams have bad fans?

Doesn't rain nearly as much as people think and I have been a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan since1979 and I'd still rather be here than in FL.

On this board, I think the Deadskins would give all of the above a run for their collective money.

You shouldn't talk, being a Red Sox fan who hails from Florida. Nobody is going to take you seriosly anymore, all your posts are childish and stupid and show how big of a forum troll you are. I see you as one bottled up, angry 12 year old who's mommy wouldn't let him have dessert. When making fun of someone's team, try to use evidence and not look like an idiot. "Spartans=boring", wow, I'm sure you got his goat!

Red Sox all the way baby!!! The problem with the Sox is that now all of a sudden "fans" are coming out of the woodwork. Prior to their win in '04 only the diehards really followed the team. Same thing with the Patriots and I guarantee it will be the same way with this years Celtics. All the bandwagoners make me sick. I remember going to Foxboro and it was EMPTY..now you can't buy a ticket to Gillette for the next ten seasons. Last year you could walk up to the FleetCenter and grab a ticket (Celtics were virtually giving them away)..this year the Celtics season sold out in fifteen minutes.

One more thing, when you try to be the New York Yankees, you have to put up with the 'ex-player' curse, meaning...if a player once played for you and you kicked him to the curb, he's going to come back to bite you in a big moment:

You just made my day :D

But on a serious note, a 7 run inning that late in the game isn't going to happen everyday. Just a freak thing happening really, the sox bullpen isn't going to be like that the entire playoffs and Borowski still let on 2 runners before it was all said and done.

I agree with the article, plus I feel articles like this should get some play since Bill Simmons gets columns and credited with "analysis" when it is usually his teams above others (putting emphasis on his teams' strengths and their oppenents/rivals' weaknesses). All I heard for years after 2000 was "the Yankees are trying to buy championships." Well, guess what? Other teams are just as guilty, teams like the Boston Red Sox. When will teams learn that big-spending is no guarantee to winning, it starts with drafting and the farm system. I wish I knew how many home-grown (which I define as: being drafted/signed, going through the minors, and debuting/playing for only your original team) players were on the World Series roster for the 2004 Red Sox compared to other teams the last few years. For so many years it was, "the Yankees just over-pay to get everybody," well, when does that become a bad thing for more than just one team. You can't be ticked off that the Yankees overpay to sign a Jason Giambi or Gary Sheffield but not bat an eye when a J.D. Drew or Julio Lugo or Gary Matthews Jr. get such huge paydays.
