Check it out - his name is Redge and he scares the **** out of me. Got him about a fortnight ago and i have to feed him live guinea pigs. He's a Coastal Carpet Python.

This is me trying to stop him from getting a stranglehold on my throat - cos i tell ya, once he gets a coil of his thickest part around your neck, you can damn well feel it - its hard to breathe.

Nice snake. You should try to get him onto frozen/defrosted as soon as you can. Live food is not a good idea.

i haven't yet been bitten by him, but he seems really aggro whenever i go to handle him. hisses, rears back and stuff. the little one is really bitey.

Try frozen guinea pigs if that's what he likes. You can also try splitting open their heads (sorry if anyone's squeamish). Brain smell often triggers a feeding response. Puppeting them with your tongs might get his attention too.

Also, hunger will overcome fussiness. He's not going to starve if he refuses to eat for a couple of weeks, but if all that's on offer is frozen/defrost, he may well take it once he's hungry enough. After that you'll be fine.

When I first got my snake, he ate pre-kills, then one day he just decided he had enough of them and refused.

He missed more than 6 feedings ( one a week ) and lost a LOT of weight before I gave in.

Don't know if he would have died over the issue, but I was concerned that's where it was heading.:(

I never understood why people like to have reptiles as pets. They suck.

Whats the appeal of having a giant snake that can kill you. A cold blooded emotionless pet. I just don't get the appeal. But thats just me. Snakes suck.:D

Masked Moron

emotionless pet.

That right there tells me you've never really spent a whole lot of time with a snake.

(that, and I'd rather have a snake than a dog that cleans it's junk with it's tounge, then tries to lick your face.....)

well see that little one? he hadn't eaten in weeks and weeks even tho i was offering him frozen fuzzy mice, and he got all hissy and bitey cos he was hungry and still wouldn't eat what i offered.
it wasn't until i bought a live mouse, tried feeding him that (he was incapable of killing or catching it) but after that when i was waving the pre-killed food around in my hand which smelled of the live mouse he lashed out at it and ate it.

yeah thats the point im trying to make! i think snakes are soo damn fussy to the point that they will actually harm themselves over the issue of frozen or live food.

I have never heard of a captive snake eating frozen rats or anything. Snakes gotta have live animals to eat. It's the warmth, and movement that triggers them. Pythons, especially one that is the size of yours can go a very long time without eating, but they will eventually need to eat. Looks like you live on a farm or something, so live rats, or field mice should not be to hard to locate.

Live food is the way to go for snakes.

Wild caught rodents are one of the worst possible things you can do to a pet snake.

The chance of the snake catching some kind of parasite or disease is VERY high with a wild rodent.

Here's my snake!!

There's a wise thing to do.

(waits for you to wake up with a rat chewing on your toe, because there was that many less natural predators to keep the rodent population in check.)

Gross, now I see it! Even a snake doesn't deserve that fate unless of course it bit you or another pet etc.

lol no i dont live on a farm, thats just my massive backyard, we always get comments like that about it tho. and the best part is we live relatively close to the city too! i.e. lots of pet stores which sell mice and rats etc.

1. Those Rabbits arent gunna last long with your new python around OR
2. Your not gunna last long when it smells them on you, and it thinks your dinner.
3. You got some AWESOME pets! Im jealous. If i were to get a snake id want a albino burmese python but i think they get 6-9ft long so having someplace to keep it would be a problem :)

Burmese Pythons can get around 25 feet long.

Ball pythons are the ones that only get 6 or so feet long.

damn you americans and your more flexible laws! we here in Aus cannot get Burmese pythons. The biggest we are legally allowed to own is the Scrub Python (Amethystine Python). And they're really psychotic.
