Comic Rumor Control

Spoiler Warning for Batman readers: Take this as a rumor for now, without confirmation, but it's still interesting news none the less after what happened to Captain America. Comic Book Resources have indicated that Bruce Wayne may be departing his comic-based world very soon according to this report (http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=13). Scroll down to the first headline and see what could be happening in June of 2008 for DC Comics.

Big thanks to Scooper Daforce for passing this bit along..
THE DEATH OF A BAT

In June/July, DC are killing off Batman. Or rather, Bruce Wayne. Robin will inherit the Batman cowl. One of the Robins anyway. Tim Drake. Jason Todd. Or possibly Red Hood. Hey, maybe Jean-Paul Valley, it has been ten years since Azrael.

Either way, the book will relaunch with a nice shiny #1.

Yes, didn't Captain America miss a trick there? I'm sure Marvel will do the same come 2009.

And what of Batwoman? Well, I'm told the launch of the Rucka/Williams series has been pushed back yet again because of the movie, and fears of "unacceptable media coverage." I'm told four issues are fully completed.

Apparently it's okay for Batman to be dead, and a new character take his place when there's a movie out. But not for Batwoman to be a *******. At least wait till it's gone to DVD for that brunette bombshell.

I'm reminded of the Warner Bros executive (http://www.comicbookresources.com/columns/?column=13#) instruction to Grant Morrison and Dave McKean over "Arkham Asylum," that the Joker not be seen dressing up as Madonna in case the cinema audience believed that meant Jack Nicholson was a transvestite.

Oh, how nice. A rumor. Even if its real, well, hey. Robin is *** as we all know, so they're making the comic less violent and more politically correct for the modern times.

Great. Batman went from *** in the early days, to cool in the later days, and *** now a days.

Maybe its best for Bruce to get out of all of this while he can.

It's sad to see what the publishers are willing to do to sell more copies. Come on Batman/Bruce Wayne, I mean it's a legend, everybody knows who they are, it would be like killing Clark Kent. It just makes no sense.

Try writing a great story instead......or is it too tough???

Is that all DC and Marvel do nowadays is copy off each other....Oh wait, they always did that.

Yeah, but people knew Bruce would be coming back... so they tuned in to see what happened between those times. If they actually kill Bruce off, I could see it being more of a stopping point for old readers more than seeing it as a jumping on point for new fans.

hahaha thats a little dramatic, but i know exactly what you mean. because seriously.... Batman is ********** ALWAYS Bruce Wayne... except when Azrael was Batman... and when pseudo-Joker was Batman in this weird TPB.... and when Batman's son was Batman in an Elseworlds issue... and when there was a League Of Batmen where a bunch of people were Batman in a different Elseworlds series... :spawnorb:

speaking of Batman, where in the flying hell is that Batman/Spawn that was supposed to come out December?????? you guys even had those statues with Batman & Spawn made by some non-TMP company. Even if it was completely scrapped, id like to at least know that it was completely scrapped by someone official. :spawnskul

Rant to follow. Please don't take anything here personally. it's just I'm angry right now:

Why do the ******ed have to act like Marvel is better than DC in every way? Neither is better than the other. They both have the propoganda-like American(Superman and Captain America), they both have the brooding psycho-path who's families were killed by criminals (Punisher, Batman) and they both have the intergalactic entities that no one's heard of unless you've been on wikipedia( except Galactus. Darksied, Braniac). They both suck in a lot of ways. They both have copied each other since the beginning( around 1930's). So please, SHUT UP.

End Rant. Again, sorry if I've pissed anyone off. I just hate ass holes. If you want to insult DC, please make a thread "The DC sucks thread" or go to the nearest Marvel thread. Thank you.

Okay, I KNOW I'm in the minority here, and I'm going to take a LOT of heat for this...

... but I actually think killing (or at least getting rid of) Bruce Wayne as Batman is a GOOD idea.

.... *waits for the throwing of vegetables*

Wait, wait, hear me out. Batman is, yes, an icon. But at the same time, why MUST he be so untouchable? Was Barry Allen untouchable? Nope. He got killed off just fine. As did Hal Jordan (until they brought him back... cowards.) Batman has, like, what? Three heirs to his mantle? In MY opinion, it's HIGH time that Richard Grayson inherit the mantle of the bat and become the Batman he was destined to be. Seriously, he's a much more compelling character, IMO (at least right now), he's really evolved far beyond his humble (and ludicrous) boy-sidekick origins, and Batman has slowly de-evolved from a compelling interesting character into a brooding, paranoid, borderline-schizophrenic nutcase if you ask me.

If someone had said that Marvel was killing off Captain America, EVERYONE would be up in arms. I knew so many people say "this is the end of Marvel" and "I won't read anymore", and yet sales picked up, the world didn't end, and even Captain America's own comic is selling just fine. Why must Batman be so untouchable? He's been around just about as long as Steve Rogers has, has had his moments of temporary replacement, and he literally has a plethora of side-kicks practically waiting in the wings to carry on his legacy.

Batman, to me, was never about Bruce Wayne. "Batman" was the persona of the dark knight, the heroic vigilante, a mantle that could and should be passed down through generations, like the Phantom, to add to his superhuman mythology. Batman, people forget, is human. Not a superhero. The fact that he HAS survived this long is baffling but noteworthy. Still, when you have Richard Grayson around, a character with practically the exact same origin story as Bruce Wayne, the same training, the same skills, he's pratically Batman already without the costume.

Superman is different. He doesn't wear a mask. He can't be "replaced" like The Flash or Captain America can. His "death" still, to this day, pisses me off since DC really could have done something bold, daring, and insane, but copped out, like we knew they would. The death of Batman could, and would, be the greatest event in comic book history, if it was real. It would put the death of Gwen Stacy, Jason Todd, Uncle Ben, Captain Marvel, Captain America, and even "Superman" all to shame.

Personally, I'm all for it. The series CAN survive without Bruce Wayne. Just not Batman. And "Batman", like Captain America, is an idealogy, and idea, one which cannot be killed, even if you kill the man.

Just as long as they don't bring Az-Bat back (I love Azrael... just keep him out of the batsuit), I'm more than okay with this.

Yet, if you read the alternate world that's presented in Batman 666, you see a grown up Damian thinking back to when Batman died, and it was around the same age he's in, in the comic books currently. Could Batman come full-circle with his son, and then Rahs finally gets him, setting up Damian to train to take down his grand father, deal with his mother, and have some rocky relationships with Nightwing and the other Robins.

Hmmm...
I really hope this doesn't happen.

I'm already there.... if this happened it would just be yet another nail of justification in my coffin of non-comic buying Golden years.

God, I hate Wolverine.

Wolverine, as a character, has been dead to me since around the time Magneto yanked the adamantium out... it went completely downhill after all of that. Of course, by rights, Magneto should have done that the very first time they fought, but feh.

**** Wolverine.

I stopped reading all superhero comics, except for :spawnorb: . I'm sick and tired of all the morality speeches and political correctness in the "big two." I hope if Batman does get whacked that the Joker does it so the DC fanboys will finally realize that he should've killed the Joker years ago before he goes to that big Batcave in the sky.

All those "Golden Age" characters are old and irrelevant anyway. Spawn is today's Batman.
