Heard on Waking Up with Whoopi this morning that there will be a special ceremony at the Bruins game on 1/19/08 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Willie O'Ree's first NHL game (1/18/58). The reason it will be on the 19th instead of the day before is because the Celtics are playing at home that night.
For those that don't know, Willie O'Ree was the first black player in the NHL. While he has not received the same press, he is just as important to tearing down the color barriers in pro sports as Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Joe Lewis and others.
To this day, he acts as a leader to introduce inner city children, regardless of race, creed or color to our wonderful sport proving that "Hockey is for Everyone".
I'm not sure but I would assume the NHL Network will cover this.
