I had a friend buy a Wii there yesterday around 8:15pm and they called me and told me if I wanted one there were 8 left. I couldn't make it there last night, but could go first thing in the morning.

I call today and ask the guy working if they have any more Wiis. He says they haven't had any and won't until after Thanksgiving. I tell him my friend bought one there yesterday and he says he doesn't think they have any in stock. I inform him that my friend said they had like 8 left at 8:15pm yesterday.

He says that he doesn't think they have anymore left. I ask him to check the computer in case. He has me hang on for a minute and comes back and tells me that they don't have any. He says the person working must have seen some empty boxes and assumed they were systems.

I think the guy is totally lying to me. I'm assuming they are just hording stock for Thanksgiving sales. Jerks.

I would believe the empty box thing. They have a crap load of those. Lots of stores are still out of Wii's

Sounds like an honest mistake.

My wife got me Assassin's Creed as a birthday present. She requested the limited edition. When she got the game it was the regular, and they didn't have any more limited ones and nobody else did. Whoever is taking orders over there needs some serious help.

Two things... one, the empty box thing is plausible. Two, it's entirely conceivable that they sold 8 Wiis between 8:15pm and when you called. I mean, even if they closed at 9pm, that's still a good 45 minutes, plus however long they were open for when you called. 8 Wiis in that time frame, especially coming up on the holidays, is nothing.

Though, to be fair, even if they are holding them for after Thanksgiving, that's their right as a business. Maybe there's a Black Friday thing, stores hold stock of Wiis for ads ALL THE TIME.

Your friend was lucky, you weren't. It happens.

(Though, again, I say this to everyone looking right now... if you wanted one that badly, you should've started looking BEFORE the holiday shopping season geared up. They were *relatively* easier to get for the past 3 months, but that's over now.)

I just left Gamestop on Tuesday for another management oppurtunity. I do know for a fact company wide they are told to hold a minimum of four systems per store (depending on the stores sales volume stores can be shipped up to 40 units per week). This is being done for the black Friday door buster deal flyers that will be out in this Sundays papers. I know it is crappy to do to people but it is thought to be a business gainer if the store has a few Wiis the morning of black Friday for people to talk about. I do agree the company makes a ton of unfair business practices seem so innocent. And that is partly why I left the company after 5yrs of being micromanaged by money hungry idiots with no understanding of peoples emotions. Im sorry but I have to agree with your topic heading:) .

While I think the empty box thing is totally possible, there's also a HUGE chance that they sold out within the last hour of the night and the first few minutes of the morning. It's not like Wii's have been super easy to find....well, other than like 2 months ago in my area a bunch of stores got big shipments....but, even then they sold out in a couple days.

But, I too hate GameStop...though you can't hate a whole company just cuz ONE idiot employee might be lying to you. There's PLENTY of other reasons to hate them:D . And, what's this I'm hearing about they no longer accept warranties on the 360??? Something about...MS extended the warranty, so GameStop corporate doesn't think it's worth it anymore to cover it when MS will??? If this is true, it's utter bull****. That means I pretty much paid 50 bucks more to buy my system through them, since if it bricks, that replacement plan I PAID for is going to be ignored.

While I suppose it is plusable they sold out last night, I called first thing this morning and the guy working made it initially sound like they hadn't gotten any in by his inital statement. He seemed shocked that I knew someone that bought a Wii there last night.

Regardless, as pointed out there are plenty of other reasons to hate them as well. :D

FYI TRU is having a HUGE Wii promotion this week. Most TRU stores got a ton (100ish) Wiis for this Sunday.

ok I know this must sound stupid and pretty sure you've probably already done this. But have you tried checking on the online stores?

All I know is that I killed my back storing a boatload of Wiis in the backroom at TRU, which I wasn't even suppose to touch in the first place.

I forgot to mention that Game crazy. Now that is one crappy store. Everyone I have ever been in has poor customer service and not enough copies of a new title, unless you pre-ordered it. Plus I hate game crazy even more, due to my newphew(whom I hate with a passion) works there.

Is it more of an "unfair" business practice to hold Wiis for an upcoming ad, or to run the ad and have no Wiis in stock?
I know "don't run the ad" sounds like a great idea, but it's not how the game's played. Firstly, it takes a long time for an ad to get made, and it's almost impossible to change; look at how many two day ads are running the Aqua Dots. One retailer that I know of, their HQ started running frequent Wii ads after a Nintendo rep promised Wii shipments would be plentiful. That was like 6 mo ago.
People would be way more pissed if there were no Wiis on Sunday morning if they were advertised, so stores hold a few. Otherwise it just looks like they ran the ad for "false advertising."
Also, at least at my store, putting the Wiis out all at once on Sunday is smoother and more organized than putting them out at noon on a Weds. We tell everyone who asks a week in advance, and people line up in the morning, and we, as management, can keep people organized and fair. Weekends are typically more fair for everyone, too. And the more people who know they are instock, the less systems go to one or two people who just happen to be in the store at the right time, and buy them all.

Now, who you SHOULD be angry at are the people who bring their entire family and friends, grab like 10 Wiis at a time, and thumb their nose at all the parents who were waiting in line behind them... and sell them on eBay for a tiny profit. Those are the people who are making getting a Wii "unfair."
