Especially when it comes to larger figs, i decided to put a shelf across the top and add a backdrop and basically try to class the place up a bit ;)

added the top shelf and molding... drilled holes for the lighting...
http://users.foxvalley.net/~joranthalus/step1.jpg

added the black backdrop....
http://users.foxvalley.net/~joranthalus/step2.jpg

added the figures and more lighting....
http://users.foxvalley.net/~joranthalus/step3.jpg

I put black felt down on the top shelf to cover the lighting cables. Now i've just got to paint the molding and the underside black.... and then take the whole thing apart when i find a 16" X 12' black rug to go underneath it....

whaddya think, sirs?

thanks guys :)

tor, yeah, but the only one i spent over list on was the Mummy... but since it's limited to 100 pieces and it took me two years to find one i'm ok with it. and since i've cut way back on the 8" figures it all kinda balances itself out.... at least that's what i tell my wife :D

First, I think it looks fantasic, really very very nice. One question, I'm not sure if those large bust are SSC or not but how do you deal with dust? I mean I realize that you have to dust but dark fabric has to be a pain.

I don't get much dust at all in the basement. I've got an air purifier running but it hardly gets any dust either. Not sure why, must have something to do with the airflow in the house. But i don't have to dust the stuff behind glass anyway, and for the big stuff like the busts and PFs i just use the brush attachment on the Dyson...

That's a great idea but wouldn't it have been much better to make a groove along the bottom of the shelve rather than drill a hole on the top? the wires look a little funny popping out like that.
For example, the wire would go in the groove:
http://www.k8zt.com/to_go_images/6-groove_detail.jpg

sorry for the large image. I couldn't find a smaller one

Joranthalus
12-10-2007, 08:57 AM

can we get a picture of it with the flash on or with a bit more light in the room :)

Joranthalus
12-10-2007, 05:38 PM
Sure, here's a few updated images. Painted the trim black today, and cleaned up... a little. I still have a few things left to do. like straighten the backdrop again now that i'm done running cables, swap out the lights on top for black ones, and paint the light cover black. And find a black rug....

But other than that :D

That display looks AWESOME but Detolf's scare the crap out of me- don't know how they are the de-facto standard for toy shelving.

Man, everytime I'm in IKEA and I WALK by the Detolfs, all I hear is *rattle rattle rattle rattle* and the whole thing looks like 2 seconds away from a Sweedish 911.

I would NEVER put things of value, especially heavy toys in there.

I'm thinking about going to shelves again, but I'm unsure. I'm using bookcases right now, but they're filled up with DVDs so there are no room for toys. The thing about shelves is that when you take them down, the time spent spackling the holes, sanding, and painting is no fun.

I don't think the kids at Ikea really have a vested interest in assembling them properly... If you have the right amount of tension on the ladders and the rubber rings on the rungs that doesn't happen....
