View Full Version : Try Catching Back Up to NECA, Bring Back Movie Maniacs & More

McFarlane's "Movie Maniac" figure line from a few years ago brought me back into toy collecting, but presently almost all of the movie figures I buy are manufactured by Neca Toys. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to get my Marlon Brando "Godfather" figure when it comes out in stores, and I'm already a proud owner of the "Napoleon Dynamite" 5 figure set, but what ever happened to making those cult horror film icons? This toy company needs to dip into the licensing of the many cult films out that aren't under contract with other toymakers. McFarlane should also try working with other movie genres, not only horror, and consider renaming the action figure line.

Here are some films and their characters I would like to see McFarlane immortalize in plastic:

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE (1971) - Alex de Large (Malcolm McDowell).
TAXI DRIVER (1976) - Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) from the mirror scene.
BLADE RUNNER (1982) - Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford).
GLADIATOR (2000) - Maximus (Russell Crowe).
APOCALYPSE NOW (1979) - Colonel Walter E. Kurtz (Marlon Brando) & Captain Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen).
2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968) - Ape & Black Monolith.
SE7EN (1995) - John Doe ( Kevin Spacey) & Detective David Mills (Brad Pitt) from the film's climax scene.
RAGING BULL (1980) - Jake La Motta (Robert De Niro) & Joey La Motta (Joe Pesci)
FORREST GUMP (1994) - Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks ) sitting on bench.
FIGHT CLUB (1999) - Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) & The Narrator (Ed Norton).
ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1975) - Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicholson).
EASY RIDER (1969) - Wyatt (Peter Fonda) & Billy (Dennis Hopper) riding their motorcycles.
REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955) - Jim Stark (James Dean).

And last but not least... some more of
THE GODFATHER (1972, 1974, 1990) - Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) from the first and third films, Santino 'Sonny' Corleone (James Caan) from the ambush scene in the first film, Fredo Corleone (John Cazale) with Michael from the "You broke my heart" scene in the second film.

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

I haven;t bought any figures in over a year, but I would buy every one of those figures in a heartbeat with the exception of Forrest Gump. I'm sure most of those are impossible to obtain, though.

Welcome.

Movie Maniacs wish list--that was my first post too...five years ago (prepare for many people informing you that McFarlane has changed direction).

But yes, I would buy most of those if they were made--especially Travis Bickle.

Sorry but most people that collect these days do not know about those movies. Those movies are classics! But to make money you need to feed the masses not a select older group of people.

Hmmm... odd that you feel McF needs to catch up with Neca and then you go and produce a list of classic licences that Neca don't have a hope of getting...LOL
Aside from that I see very little there that would sell in high enough quantities to make any money.

Welcome to the boards new guy and enjoy the wait ;)

Oh, while you're waiting you may want to pre-order the latest Micheal Myers rehash....

Todd could just cover all the bases and release a Generic Man figure. Then you could paint him like you want and call him Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, or any other boring idea for an action figure.

WHY DOES EVERY NOOB POST ABOUT BRINGING BACK MOVIE MANIACS!?!?!?!?!

Let's face it.....

The MovieManiac line put McFarlane in the market.

That is also why there are so many new collectors and a demand for movie figs.

It won't be back as before, because there are more players in the field, the rights are getting harder and frankly, most movie figures that we have asked for years are out.....

We are just hunting specifics.....

wow a hitchco*ck figure would be so great
there are so many options without harking on horror characters, hopefully if godfather sells well tmp would do more single release characters and at least keep hope alive
i could go on but whats the point really

You offer some good suggestions there, and welcome to the boards.

Don't pay any attention to the flamers. God forbid someone actually post their opinion here. You are dealing with a lot of loyal McFarlanites here (obviously), so you can expect some negative feedback. At least you offer some suggestions too though, as opposed to just flaming McF altogether. ;)

i cant belive people are still grilling people who post that mcfarlane should bring back MM. you know ******* well that series kicked some serious ass. it has already been said but thats what got most people into mcfarlane in the first place. i dont want to here that bull**** jive of, "oh well the licsences are hard to get" and "Poeple wont buy that" thats horse****. NECA has answered most peoples wishes with their figures, they just released a new set of resevoir dogs AND lost boys figures, if you didnt **** a brick with those announcements then your crazy, not to mention all the figures before that (Hannibal ****ing lector for chrsit sake!). These people are giving what us the movie collectors want. im not bashing mcfarlane, his company does exceptional work, its just a ****in shame he scrapped the whole line. basically dont give the newbie dude **** cause its still is and always will be a good idea to bring the line back. STILL the possibilities are endless, if todd is having are hard time picking good liscences then ****in get someone else to do it. heres a good start, how about making movie figures that us the consumers want and not what he wants. just because todd doesnt like the shinining doesnt mean a million people wouldnt buy a jack torrence figure.

Well, I never joined this board for that reason either, but it would be nice if there was something that I liked. The ED-209 that McFarlane was supposed to make is still nowhere to be found. The company has now missed the 20th anniversary of Robocop, which would have been a good time to release ED-209.

Man fight club would be such an awsome license to grab, think about the sweet bloodied and bruised variants they could do, along with all the rich characters, I mean who doesnt want a bob with b***h T**S, or an angel face with smashed up face variant, oh and ofcourse they would have to be articulated for fight sequences, god I need fight club figures, and while your at it, give me some damn boondock saints figures, at least the two saints and rocco, please oh please oh please.

Yes, McFarlane is getting more money than before without the MM line.....

Now, would you really believe that he will have the position he has now in the market without the MM line and only with the other figures ?

I know it wasn't the the single responsible thing for the success......

Personally I never got interested on the McFarlane products until MM got out.....

Frankly, I don't miss the MM line one bit, and when I decided I needed more room, they were the majority of the figures taken off my shelf. And I wouldn't buy any of the figures on your list, or any of the ones mentioned in this thread for that matter.
However, I would like to see people get the figures they want, but I don't think Mcfarlane is the the company you should be asking anymore.

Yeah, really, Sportspicks are what made this company what it is regardless of what a few people refuse to believe. Their attention to detail on their Spawn figures before that is also what set them apart from everyone else. Movie Maniacs were simply along for the ride and found a small, devoted niche group that stuck to it religiously. They were cool, they had their moment but seriously, people who want figs from some of the most mundane, unknown movies out there thinking they will sell need to get real.

How can you even say the Resident Evil figures are bad? They're some of the best figures for the series, and yes, that's even including Palisades. And Gremlins? Gremlins was ****ing GREAT. Ghostbusters? Nightmare Before Christmas? Pirates of the Carribean? There's TONS of figures they've done that're the best sculpting you could get.

The new RE figures suck. The Palisades version are all bigger and with nicer paint and detailing for the same price. The Hunter is nice, but the Licker? Jesus even the ollllld RE2 figure version looked better than that.

They're just inconsistent, with some good like their Ash figures, Kratos, even AvP figures, and some bad like their Resident Evil figures. The fact that most people compare their high detail of sculpts to McF or they would describe it as "McFarlane-like" suggest that it is true. Ever heard of anyone saying that (insert any fig company here) sculpts are "neca-like". ;) :D Not really bashing neca.....but, that's just the way the industry is.
