As an Australian, and an animal lover, this really got to me. Sure there are some racist individuals here, and sure there are some individuals who do some pretty bad things to animals, but at least our governement is not actively and illegally whaling some other country's oceans and killing whales in most barbaric ways (explosive harppons!).

And just to tie it back to toys; i love japanese toys, they're a notch above the rest, but when it comes to killing and eating animals, i'd have to say the same.

The Japanese are a fine people to talk about racial superiority and exclusionist nationalism when they themselves started a damn war over it barely 3 generations ago.

But they do make a fine toy.

i'll say this about that: japan has always had a fine tradition of saying one thing and doing another, to the effect that they'll actually begin to believe their own spin: nanking never happened ("we were invited, punch was served," etc etc), adolescent mass-suicides and adult agoraphobia aren't a big deal, all that whale-meat that's in their eateries and cafeterias doesn't exist, and the only time they kill whales is for "scientific purposes." it must be an extraordinary amount of research, though, because they kill upwards of seventy whales a year, often breaching foreign waters to do so.

why doesn't anyone ever take action? because japanese commercial and political concerns have developed a massive amount of goodwill with other foreign powers. most everyone sees them as blissfully impotent purveyors of pop culture, gadgets, and toys. seriously, who here contemplates the impending destruction of one of this earth's most unique species, or frightening historical revisionism, whenever they buy their latest resin statue of asuka langely in a bondage suit..?
