Oh I know, there's 3-4 people every year that get 1-2 votes from the local writers, but I'd love to hear one of these guys defend their vote.

I agree with you about some of the "1 vote" guys, but like others have said it may be more of a courtesy vote for some personal/professional reason by a specific writer who knew that player would not be on the ballot again.

Wait, what? I thought the HOF wanted to have players go in and represent the team they played for the longest/had the most success with? He played about 7 years with the Yankees, more than any other team in his career, won a WS with NY, plus he holds some Yankees team records. If this is true than I will quote one of my favorite athletes of all-time in asking, "Whassup wit dat?!"

I grew up watching Dale Murphy In Atlanta.... where the Braves lost like a 100 games a Season during most of the 80's, sans 1982 or 1983 if I remember correctly.

Hell, I called the ticket box at Fulton Co. Stadium when I was like 7 or 8 and asked:

"Do You Have Any Good Seats Left For Tonight's Game?"
The Response:
"How Well Can You Pitch, Son?" :p :D

Yep, Murph Carried That Team, And Was About The ONLY Reason To Watch The Braves.... Unless You Actually LIKED Watching Horner Do His Jabba the Hutt Impersonation At 3rd Base.

Then The Front Office Traded Dale Away To Philly When They Started Playing Well That Summer Of 1991.... I Dang Near Cried In A Foot Locker When I Heard The News. :(

Mostly all of the pictures I've ever seen have Goose as a Yankee. Especially the top two which I think are classic pics of Goose that are used for many, many reports, etc.

He played for 7 years with the Yankees, was a 4-time All-Star, & won a WS with NY compared to playing only 4 years & 2 All-Star selections with SD. Plus, he came back to Old Timers Day last year and was absolutely adored.

Shouldn't be about who a player played for the longest or even where they played their best ball but it should be determined by what the majority of the fans remember that person for and in Gossage's case you ask any random person on the street to describe Goose in one word and 99.9% of them will say "Yankee".

Enough Said!!!

What follows is a cut and paste from the Hall's website:

Who decides what team logo will be used on Hall of Fame plaques?
The choice of which team’s logo appears on a player’s plaque is the Museum's decision, though we always consider the wishes of an inductee. As a history Museum, it's important that the logo be emblematic of the historical accomplishments of that player's career. A player's election to the Hall of Fame is a career achievement, and as such, every team for whom he played is listed on the plaque; however, the logo selection is based on where that player makes his most indelible mark.

I didn't read anything that said Goose would be going in as a Padre, my guess is that the HOF will insist on the Yankee cap.

Being named the all time greatest defensive player would certainly help Tram's case. I don't dispute Ozzie being in the HOF. I think he's a deserving candidate. I just don't see how he was a first ballot HOFer while Trammell had his best showing this year at 18%

At the plate, Trammell was the better hitter. He's ahead of Smith in BA, OBP, SLG, OPS, doubles, homers, and RBI's. Smith has 95 more hits and 14 more doubles, but he also had an extra 1,000 at bats or so.

In the field, there's no dispute Ozzie was better defensively, but it isn't like Tram couldn't field a grounder to save his life. His fielding percentage at shortstop is only 0.01% behind Smith's (Tram played roughly 100 games at a position other than SS). And he did win 4 Gold Gloves himself. Smith has more put outs, assists, and double plays, but again he had a longer career and never played any position besides SS.

Again, my complaint isn't that Smith is in the HOF. Its that he's in and Tram is ignored.

Thank you very much for this section of information, I really appreciate it.:)

I read in the articles on mlb.com & the HOF's official website saying this induction ceremony "will again have a distinct Padres flavor". The very next paragraph in the article says:

"Rich 'Goose' Gossage, who may be better known for his first tour with the Yankees (1978-83), was elected on Tuesday in his ninth year on the ballot. He'll join his former Padres manager, **** Williams, on the stage behind the Clark Sports Center this coming summer."

With those lines, I am making the (perhaps incorrect) assumption that he will go in as a Padre. I really hope I am wrong, but that is what I think the articles are saying. The crazy thing is, the Hall's website has 2 pictures on it's homepage & 1 in the actual article of Gossage as a Yankee.

Here are the links to the articles:

http://web.baseballhalloffame.org/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080104&content_id=5951&vkey=hof_news

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080108&content_id=2341502&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb

Also, here is an article that describes his "best-known feats" as coming during his time with the Yankees: http://web.baseballhalloffame.org/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080108&content_id=6072&vkey=hof_news

(Even the photo gallery the HOF has for him in the above article has 9 of the 13 photos with him representing the Yankees in some way.)

The craziest thing to me is that a player who is considered not Hall worthy by the voters for 8 years becomes Hall worthy with no change in his stats or accomplishments. What changed between year 8 and year 9 that made the voters give him the votes? A guy is either a Hall of Famer or not. It really takes away from the voters credibility.

I think its a matter of who else is on the ballot. The writers/voter feel like they have to vote for SOMEONE, but not EVEYONE, so some years a certain player will get their vote, but other years they won't.

Why on earth would Carter go in as a Met? Yes he won a World Series on a great team there but Carter did most of his damage in his career as an Expo. Just because "younger fans" don't know anyting about the history of the game that doesn't mean he shoul've gone in as a Met.

As for this years voting, good to see Goosage finally go in. The fact that it toook this long for him to get in is a joke. The guy should have been in years ago.

All I know is that the following guys should get in as well: Blyleven,Dawson, Raines,Trammell. Jim Rice could go either way, he had a very good career but the numbers fall a little short, in my mind. Though I'd have no problem with him going in.

By the way, as of yesterday Tim Raines is now the best non pitcher that isn't in the Hall of Fame. Yes, he's my favourite player but that has nothing to do with it. Look at his stats and someone please explain to me how he isn't a Hall of Famer? I get why he didn't get in on the 1st ballot but not even 25%! What a joke.

A guy who scores over 1,500 runs , reached base nearly 4,000 times, is only the 4th player in league history to steal over 800 bases (not including Billy Hamilton and his "different" SB totals) and to boot he was by fair the most successful at stealing a bag in the history of the game. What is exactly missing? It's not his fault he played in Montreal and the same goes for Dawson. We all know if they played their careers in a major American market there is no question as to if they get in. The only reason Dawson is getting the push he does is because of his time with the Cubs.

Does anyone here not think that if Gary Carter played his whole career in New York or at least in a somewhat major market that he goes in as a 1st ballot guy?

I'm not saying he should've gone in as a Met, I was just playing Devil's Advocate to the guy that said Gossage should go in as a Yankee because most fans see him as a Yankee.

I honesly think more people know Carter as a member of the 1986 Mets as opposed to anything he did as an Expo. Not that it's right for them to think that way, I just feel that's how it is.

I personally had no problem with him going in as an Expo, I was just saying that just because a guy is know for playing on a certain team, doesn't mean that's the team he made the most impact on.

Look at McGwire. Was ROY , 6 time All-Star (as opposed to 1 with STL) and World Series champ with the A's, but most casual fans would say he should probably go in as a Cardinal, b/c most remember him for hitting 70 homers as a Cardinal.
