View Full Version : Lakers get Gasol!

Looks like the Lakers just got Pau Gasol for Crittenton and Kwame plus two first round picks.
As a Laker fan, I'm excited about this. Not sure how well Bynum and Gasol can play together when they get back but getting rid of Kwame for Gasol is a great move.

What the shiz?! Crittendon is a PG, right? MEM already has Conley, Lowry AND Navarro. MEM got peter-rolled.

Crittenton's a PG and will be a solid player in the future, he's someone I was hoping the Lakers would keep but if he had to go to bring in Gasol, so be it.
I guess Mem is trying to clear cap and look to the future.

This makes me more than happy. I've been a Gasol fan since he broke into the league.
I think he'll fit right in with Bynum, bcause he can play the high post in the triangle. That's the one thing always missing in the triangle is a big man to hit the mid range jumper.

Sources: Grizz sending Gasol to Lakers for Brown
ESPN.com news services
Updated: February 1, 2008, 3:32 PM ET
The Memphis Grizzlies will send Pau Gasol and a future second-round pick to the Lakers for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, the unofficially retired Aaron McKie , the draft rights to Pau Gasol's brother Marc and future first-round picks in 2008 and 2010, NBA front-office sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein.
It is believed that the Lakers would need to arrange a sign-and-trade for McKie to make the salary cap math work for the deal. McKie is not currently playing in the NBA but his rights are owneed by the Lakers.
According to The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal, which also reported the trade, the Grizzlies decided to move ahead with trading Gasol because the team felt it could not longer move ahead with him off or on the court -- and that the acquisition of Brown, who is earning $9,075,000 in the last year of his contract, would provide the franchise salary cap relief.
The Commercial Appeal also reported that the Grizzlies are sending Stromile Swift to the New Jersey Nets for center Jason Collins. The Grizzlies and Nets have been discussing that deal for the past week and expect to finalize it on Monday, according to the report.
Swift met with Grizzlies coach Marc Iavaroni and general manager Chris Wallace on Friday, was sent home and did not practice with the team and will not play in Saturday's game against Utah, the newspaper reported.

The Grizzlies have been getting worse since they got to town and now they will suck even more. They make bad decisions like getting swift 2 times, getting Brian Cardinal for about 4.5 million a year, not playing good rookies, and the list goes on. They continue to drive fans away and the only basketball team we care about right now is the TIGERS. I hope they do something with this cap room next year because I would love to see them do better but with this management I don't think it is going to happen.

Definately a great move by the Lakers. The only thing they really lose is Crittenton. You're replaceing Brown w/ a much better player in Gasol and the #1 picks prob. won't amount to much from where the Lakers will be picking.

That's armed robbery!! Seriously, they got Gasol for a bag of chips!
I guess Kwame's expiring contract was just too appealing to pass up... but still.. more power to the Lakers for pulling that crazy trade off.
Guess the Butler/Kwame trade doesn't seem THAT bad now, does it? :p

It's sad but that's what the NBA is nowadays. A player like Gasol gets traded for almost nothing just to clear out room under the cap. Then next year Memphis will probably be trying to trade the player they signed w/ that cap space again. LOL.That's armed robbery!! Seriously, they got Gasol for a bag of chips!

Being a Lakers fan I Love the move.Gasol can play center till Bynum gets back and those two together will be a tough match up in the post for any team. Not only will it make the Lakers a better team, this should make Kobe happy and a Laker for life!!

Wow that's a big move for the Lakers. A frontline with Bynum, Gasol and Odom is pretty scary...especially in the triangle. This might just make them serious contenders. Watch out.

Great move by the Lakers, now Gasol can play center for them until Bynum comes back in March.
Also, it's always a good day when the Grizzlies suck. I'm still angry at Michael Heisley for moving the team to Memphis from Vancouver for no apparent reason, Vancouver had the potential to be a great basketball market but he didn't give it time and went to a city that has no fan base for pro basketball and now his wallet is taking a hit as the team continues to lose millions every year.
I have no idea what the Grizzlies are trying to do, I guess they are trying to set themselves up for an epic second half tank job to get a Top 3-5 lottery pick because their roster is absolutely atrocious. They have some nice pieces in Rudy G ay, Mike Miller, Mike Conley, etc. but outside of those guys they have a NBDL type roster.

Who do you think the best team in the West is? The lakers could be any West team without Gasol, in the regular season anyway..But for the lakers to beat the suns, spurs, mavs, hornets in a 7 game series, they needed someone to help Kobe..And Gasol can do that..Kobe, Gasol, and Bynum..Thats a pretty good trio.

I still think it's the Spurs until they're dethroned. After them Mavs and Suns.
I don't think the Lakers will win it this year because it will take some time to for everyone to gel. People don't realize it's taken the current Laker team two years going on their third to truly be a team. Obviously part of that is Kobe but if he can trust Pau right of the bat I think it accelerates their chances. I see next year or the year after as being their best shot now.

Two 7 footers in the Triangle Starting lineup. Maybe Odom can refind his jumper after playing the Small for awhile. The one thing you have to be concerned with is if Bynum can get over this first big injury and continue to dominate.
Another concern is Gasol's a tad injury prone. But you can't question the guys heart and having Bynum healthy and Gasol in a 15 foot range of the basket, with Kobe playing lead role... expect the possibility of a very dangerous team for the next few years.

As a lifelong Lakers fan...I am loving this trade. Does this make them contenders? Well, I thought they'd make some noise in the playoffs due to the emergence of Andrew Bynum...so this only solidifies my thought.
With all that said...the Spurs are the defending champs and they deserve all the respect in the world. I think the Lakers still need some more experience until they can truly contend...although an upset is not out of the question considering the talent on the roster and the way they've been playing together this season.

I agree, even though I'm sure the Lakers post-Shaq performance would be similar to most teams who had just lost one of the most dominant players of all time.
But my question about what the Suns and Mavs had proven didn't have anything to do with the Lakers. I was making the point that they shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as the Spurs as far as proving anything in the playoffs recently. Sure, in the 00's they are both nice teams that perform well in the regular season, but nobody expects them to go all the way in the playoffs because they will have to come up against the Spurs or earlier in the decade, the Lakers.

3 years is an era? LOL. By the way, the Mavs didn't go any farther than the Lakers did last year.
The insta-contender statements are a little premature, but you can't fault people for getting excited. Lakers fans were already excited with the team's improvement prior to Bynum's injury. This is cause to reignite that excitement. Plus, we can finally put Kobe's trade demands and opt-out threats to bed. If he isn't happy now, he needs a straight-jacket.
Getting Gasol is much better than getting Kidd or JO, especially without having to give up any key pieces. Heck, the 2010 first rounder is merely a trade down of maybe 10 spots, since the Lakers got Memphis' second rounder that year with Gasol. Lakers should be drafting at the end of the first, and Memphis sure seems likely to be drafting high in the lottery.
I know you're a little worried, what with the Spurs only winning 2 games against .500+ teams in the past month and a half, but they'll probably turn it around. The win against the Suns was solid.

since '99 (around the time this rivalry started) both teams have swept each other in the Playoffs. you have nothing there.
you know what, i'm kinda glad the Lakers got Gasol after all. it'll make it that much sweeter when we get a "W" over LA now.
and don't forget the fact that the Spurs absolutely owned the Grizzlies (with Gasol) in the Playoffs every year we've matched up with them. hell . . . the regular season too.
