Take a toy figure, boxed properly to protect it, and it will weigh 2.3 lbs....go to:

www.usps.com

input the weight

input the shipping from zip code

input the shipping to zip code.

if you live on one side of the country and they are on the other its actually $10.55 priority mail to ship that toy...if you can keep in under 2 lbs its $7.50 priority mail.....
even parcel post is $6.15 for a 2lb package (or less)....$7.93 parcel post if over 2lbs.

Its really important to research the issue instead of complaining about it when in reality the price people are charging is really not out of line. Its the ugly truth;)

I live in California. I sold 20 or so individual figs on eBay 2 months ago. I charged $8 for priority mail with delivery confirmation. I lost money on every single one of them except for a guy who lives 30 minutes away from me, and I think his was $7.55.

I used to charge $8, and that would cover shipping and offset the fees a little- now it doesn't even cover shipping.

no...not just a bit:eek:...i shipped a package to a guy in Hawaii last week.....box was 18 by 12 by 10.......IF, it could have fit in a box 12 by 12 by 12 the shipping was $16 or something...because of the dim weight factor it was $41.00 to ship.....so the dimensions dont drive it up a bit......it drives it up ALOT......

It also depends what Zone you live in>Go to the PO and ask for a Zone list.It will tell you what Zone each Zip Code is in.I know when I ship to the West/East Coast its always at least $1 more.

thats the ugly truth....I had a guy order a deluxe boxed set from me.....our billing system charged him $11 to ship it (he was in chicago)........he made a point of *****ing and complaining in the comments section of his order that were were RAPING him for shipping.......turns out he bought it for his brother for christmas and he already had one (the brother)...so he had to ship it back to us......priority mail shipping cost him $21.......needless to say he owed us an apology..which we didnt get.....he should have KEPT the toy.......the deluxe boxed set was $19.95....so basically he lost $12.00 by returning it (the orig $11 we charged to ship) and the $2.00 difference between what we refunded him for the toy ($19.95) and his cost to ship it back $21.00

It really sucks that shipping costs so much, and that's not including packing supplies. I don't know how a business like yours can continue to absorb the costs, and it's obvious from reading this board that people just don't understand the costs involved.

I too, used to charge $8.00 for shipping in the U.S. for insurance and delivery confirmation. I got tired of losing money and I refuse to ship without Ins. and DC because I don't want to get burned by someone saying they didn't get it or that it was damaged. Now, I charge $10 for the same in the U.S. and if I'm lucky, I make $1.00 off the entire deal. The way I see it, that covers my peanuts, bubble wrap and time.

If you ship Priority order your boxes from USPS by the bundle. They are free, you only have to pay to have them shipped to you. I use newspaper instead of bubblewrap to cut down on shipping supply costs. Never had a complaint of damage.

bluemacaw2
02-13-2008, 11:54 AM
I know stuff costs money if you buy supplies......I save all my boxes when I purchase items and even save all the foam popcorns....when I ship out items I am usually right on maybe .50 cents oents over at most.
What I want to know is if someone claims they are just trying to get rid of the piece they bought in store, then take it back and let someone else get it and avoid them having to pay for shipping since your too lazy to take it back.
Second, if your a dealer and I'm sure plenty are here, yes I know supplies cost alot...but if you buy your figures by bulk;...then buying shipping supplies by bulk is going to cut costs down considerably and then the .50 cents should be plenty to cover costs.

Exactly.....I don't think $9 is all that far off.

I have a receipt right now shipping from Seattle to Pittsburgh.....1lb 12.2 oz, Priority with del conf....cost me $8.15. That doesn't count the cost of packaging supplies....not that that is all that much, but you're complaining about less than a dollar.

Is everyone expected to loose money on shipping?

A lot of people are starting to calculate Paypal fees in their shipping costs so $9 isn't that bad.

if you just put a figure in a box barely big enough for it with no packing material then it will cost around $6 to ship. but if you want a well packed figure in a big enough box to protect it with bubble wrap, peanuts etc,it will cost around$7-8 at least to ship. ebay and paypal fees are outrageous now so people try to make an extra $1 to cover that, and those fees will soon go up alot more, alot of times most people who sell a $10 figure for cost or even $11-15 wind up losing money or breaking even. boxes cost at least 75 cents.labels cost 25-30 cents each ,ink, bubble wrap, fees gas,time.. if you don't like the prices on ebay then don't buy from ebay or wait until you find someone with lower shipping charges, then dont complain when you get a damaged figure.

ogrjmj
02-13-2008, 12:19 PM
one more thing. im not a dealer. i sell extra figures or ones i get damaged from tru or kb.com. i sell slot of figures below cost and still only charge 7.99,now im going to 8.99. factor that in to the final price your willing to pay,i dont understand whats so hard about that.

Voodoo Chylde
02-13-2008, 12:19 PM
Also, did you know that in order to successfully make a claim against USPS for damages the box you use has to have at least 2 inches of packing material around all sides of the item? This is another consideration for using bigger boxes even if they cost you more.

Bryan316

The only figures that cost me $5 to ship are carded figs like Star Wars, the old Batman, neoMOTU since they can fit in the long, thin 1092, 95, or 97 box. To properly ship SPs, unless you simply suck, you use something akin to the #7 12"x12"x8" box and properly pad it with plastic bags, paper, peanuts, etc. Those are usually $6.90 and up to ship, depending on weight. It's also more expensive for me if it goes to the west coast. If it goes from one side of the US to the other, crossing many zones, it can be upwards of $9. Factoring in shipping supplies (no matter how or where you get them), tape, and finding a time to go to the post office when you have a job and life (something it seems that most of my recent buyers don't understand), $9 is almost more than fair.

You can also blame ebay for raising their fee's yet again as well as taking away a seller's right to leave feedback. So naturally seller's are going to put that extra bit of padding in a package now to make sure the item doesn't get damaged cause now if they get a bad feedback they can't even defend themselves in the matter.

The way I look at it is if you want the item bad enough you'll pay the price they are asking if not you will find it cheaper or do without but I hate to say that just because you complain about it on a toy/sports forum isn't going to make a seller have a change of heart. It is what it is and not much anyone can do about it.

I also want to add that I pay for shipping online so I get the free D/C. Without that, I would think it would be around 8.25 or so. I guess the extra 75 cents for gas/tape is fine. I see what he is saying, though. If you are in the same "zone" it can be as cheap as five dollars, so it would be nice if people did shipping by zip code instead of the flat rate.

yep i blame Ebay too....but how much longer before something gets done to the sellers for overcharging? so ebay prices go up...and people increase the price to shipping/handing. Ebay fees continue to rise........oh gotta tack on the fee for shipping again.........This trend is never gonna end. Buyers are gonna get on sellers cases and point out the excessive shipping prices. You can't keep expecting buyers to pay the difference in the fee hikes implemented by Ebay do you? What happens when say 15 years from now ebay is taking 20 percent of final value cost........is it ok for seller to charge 20 bucks for shipping one figure then?:D

you can't expect sellers to eat all the ebay and pay pal costs. it's a killer for small time people like me just trying to get rid of extra stuff. between listing ,final value and pay pal fees if is i sell a figure for $15 that i bought for $10 after fees box, label, packing materials etc.. i don't make any money, is that fair? like i said before, alot of times i start my extra figures at $1,some sell for $1, some for $5 etc... most people on ebay doing what i do dont really make much of a profit. once in a while maybe but it's the small timers that are really getting screwed by these fee hikes.once again. people need to factor inall teh shipping costs into the final price they are willing to pay. i almost never buy off ebay unless i get a really, really good deal.

yes - eBay makes money off sellers and not buyers, so they will never "inforce" it.

Seriously? Ebay already has a system for sellers that vastly overcharge for shipping. But $9 isn't overcharging. Please sell an SP on Ebay and let us know how it turns out. You'll see that $8-9 isn't bad.

US to Canada is way cheaper. Here's single figure rates from US to me in Ontario.

$5.56 from San Fran - air mail
$6.35 from Oregon - air mail
$6.05 from NC - air mail
$10.96 from Atlanta - first class

I got a 1 figure package from Kingston On. (2.5 hrs away) $10.00
From Sudbury On. (3 hrs away) - $12.85

To ship one to the US would be more than $10.
Always better to buy several at once.

hmmmm makes me wonder now about some of these Post Offices.......I swear i get different quotes all the time. When I went recently to send a 12" inch figure they weighed it and gave me a price quote...and it was like 20 bucks or something like that....I'm like why is it that much? so they picked the box up and placed it back on the scale...and wow look at that its only 9 something to ship now..for a 12" figure!!! sooooo I have reason to believe that P.O's are cheating out people at times.....hey if Professional sports players cheat...then I am sure P.O's do to............as Its happened to me a couple times now..one charges more than the other and they are only 10 miles apart. so just something to think about..its best to weigh it yourself.

02-14-2008, 07:26 AM
Bluemacaw2, the easiest thing to do is go to USPS.com and you can calculate your rates right there online. That way when you take it to the post office, at least you have a reference for what the price is and can question it if it doesn't reflect the online price. One thing I found out is that if it's an oversized box (bigger than 12x12x12) the priority mail rate doubles in price at the very least. Then if you want a cheaper rate, parcel post is the way, but it's 7-10 days shipping. Maybe the post office is quoting you the traditional priority rate first, but when you questioned it, they then shot you the parcel post rate.

Now back to the original subject, I don't think $10 is out of line, when you consider the cost of packing materials (tape, peanuts, bubble wrap), delivery confirmation, time and sometimes gas depending where you live. As others have said, keep looking if the shipping price is a deterrent from purchasing something here on the boards or EBay.
