i'm not quite sure what is the variety toys collector called. simply name it mixturist. :p
now I'm hesitating of my direction. previously, my collection was 90% from mcfarlane toys...among the 90% of mcfarlane toys. 90% of them are spawn figures. the rest are mosty AVP stuff and some monsters figures.
I try to be a spawn completist. thats due to the limited budget, I don't want to expand my collection to other toys. sometimes we just can't afford everything we like...although i've seen many lucky boardies here with their awesome collection. too bad i am not one of them...
and i couldn't be completely considered as spawn completist. at least i don't collect some old school spawn stuff like series 2-10. except some exclusive and original spawn figures,
i usually will buy all figures in any new spawn series even though i might have less interest of some of them. but I would still buy the wholeset. In that case, i have spent my budget to some figures which not really into my top list. just because i'm trying to be spawn completist.:o
I have given up some other better toys from other series. and I felt I'm a bit regret...
but recently I am expanding my collection to other toys, e.g Hot toys predator, sideshow statue, medicom RAH, mezco, neca...etc.
I found that I always spent over budget on every month since i started to get myself involved to other toys.:(
I need your comment, should I stick with my spawn toys collection....or to be selective. And continue to expand my toy collection to other toys... would like to hear your feedback.
and sorry for my noob grammar :(

They say variety is the spice of life, but at the end of the day, it's your money, your collection, and you're the one that has to see it everyday, so do whatever you think you'll be happiest with in the long run.

Yeah, I don't put a title on it... just like I don't put a title on the kind of DVD collector I am... just like I don't put a name on the kind of grocery shopper I am. I buy the things I want to buy, and that's about it.

It's toys!
You should do whatever's most fun for you~
I started off trying to be a McF completest but it became too much so I got rid of most everything but the Spawn lines & think I'll stick with that-
not that I won't buy other McF figures if they catch my eye.
For the other guys stuff- (usually Monsters or Finks)-
I'll more then likely buy the whole line rather then end up looking for the one I passed on 5 years down the road-
But there's not a lot of lines that interest me.
For stuff like Marvel I'll only pick up a few select figures of my favorite characters~
I blame most of my collecting habits on a TV show (FX the collectable show) that was airing when I first started collecting~

I often go ahead and buy a figure if I'm not sure about it--sometimes I'm really glad I bought it and other times I decide to return it or sell it--I realize this doesn't solve your problem--but sometimes I find it useful to overspend initialy with the knowledge that I won't keep all the figures. I end up with the ones I really like. I'm sure this costs more in the end, but I'm almost always happy with my decisions on what figures I get. I think it's more important to have a wide variety of figures that I really like rather than a complete collection of figures that I only partially like.
But like everyone has said, ultimately, it's your money and your collection. I think you probably already know what you want--go with that.

It's an expensive hobby. I simply buy what I like now a days. Back in my earlier collector days, I would buy all the figures in a series just for the sake of having a series completed. I ended up with a bunch of s****y figures that I did not like or care for. As far as my collection, I enjoy a variety of lines and figures. I use to collect all McFarlane, but through the years, that has changed.

I just buy what I like. I think I only have one complete set of figures and that is NECA's Castlevania figures (only cause they sold in a set).
Everything else I just buy 1 or 2 from each series.

Being my collection is split between vinyl and regular figures it can get pretty costly without being a completist. I came late into the game of collecting and like a lot of the old stuff. I mix it up. The closest thing I have to complete is Spawn Series 25. Only one I'm missing is I.095 which I'll pick up later. I loved that whole series so I wanted to complete it. It truely doesn't matter if your room looks like bonedust's or anyone else. It matters that you like it and can look in that room and appreciate it.

I'd go with "mixturist."
Besides being expensive, being a completist means you buy every figure in a series including the crappy ones.

i simply collect what intrigues me or what im familiar with that looks cool. if another figure in a series i like looks like crap, or im not a fan, I dont buy.

I've been "collecting" (I just think of it as buying toys) for several years, though I've admittedly taken a couple of fairly lengthy breaks in there. I just now bought my first complete set of figures.
Y'know, screw completism. Unless you actually want the whole set, just grab the ones you really want.

02-28-2008, 12:27 AM
I've walked both paths. When I first started I was a Mixturist just grabbing what I thought was cool looking. Later on I got into Star Wars and started to become a completist cause I wanted to have entire sets carded.
Recently though I've stopped collecting figures to keep carded. It's exciting to have them at first but after awhile I feel like they are just collecting dust hanging from the walls, and I'm really not collecting for value. I've had a few "why did I buy this?" moments with trying to collect everything in a particular line. Not to mention that Hasbro is insane when it comes to repacks and I got sick of buying the same figure multiple times just because.
Now I'm more of a mixturist again, I think it's a bit more fun and in the end you get figures because you really wanted them and not just for the sake of having a complete set. I do tend to try and get a couple of figures from each line still just because I think it's nice to flesh out displays. Whatever you do though just be sure to have the most fun possible!

Completists and MIMP collectors are people I want little to do with.
Get the cool **** you like, take it out and play with it until it breaks. Anything else is OCD of the highest order.

mixturist = fun, you will always buy something unexpected everymonth, just because too many good stuff released ...people who knows how to control their budget well. being a "mixturist" is really fun.

This is true, but if you stick to buying only those figures that you really like, it evens out. The money you would spend on a figure that you really do not like but would buy just for the sake of completing a series, you can use to purchase a figure that you really dig. I have really gotten into Neca and Mezco within the last year or so. I cannot get enough of the large scale figures.

you are right...only in some cases whihc really bother me, for instance, i would think i like mezco comic rocket hellboy > spawn 31 necrocop... but in this case, i like the necrocop too... but it is not in my top list...eventually. i bought wholeset of spawn series 31. :o and i have given up mezco hellboy

Don't care much on repaints, chase figs, variants, etc...

It also depends on what you collect...
Being a Star Wars or wrestling completist will kill you...
Being a God of War completist....won't..lol.
I go across the board...Kratos, Godzillas, Darth Maul, Boba Fett, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Reptile, Altair, some Transofrmers, a few superheroes, and several sportspicks make up my entire collection..

same for me, I only buy what really really catches my eye, I'm more and more selective with what I buy due to lack of space and money. I'm not poor but I have other more expensive hobbies (and I'd be bored to death if buying toys was my only spice in life).
For instance, although I loved the idea of McFarlane doing a zodiac line, so far I think I'll only end up buying Scorpio and maybe Cancer (final decision when I see them in stores).

I kind of understand how it is to be a completist since I used to try and do that but it wasn't worth it. I realized that though there was satisfaction in completing a set I was very unsatisfied with many of the things I had.
I think you should pick and choose with everything BUT also consider how it will look in your collection. There are some thing I think are really sweet like the HT Appleseed set but they wouldn't fit anywhere. Also, be VERY careful and picky when getting into other things. Take it slow and really consider if having that item is a good move or maybe not so much.
Sometimes you may just have to pass things up all together. Right now I'm passing on a bunch of things that would be really good additions but I have college to pay for so I'm prioritizing (maybe in a bad order ;)). I am satisfied with my collection though so it helps to keep me from buying.
By the way, your grammar is pretty good.

actually ...if you are able to stick with only 1 line (besides of SW line), i think you could save more compare to variety collectors... i'm now really getting broke since i buy HT figures... but it is more fun to have different type of figures...i admit it:o

Stick to 2-3 lines & leave it at that... leave it characters you actually like.
there is way too much out there.
Some things that altered my collecting habits were, to narrow it down, were charaters I like,
lines no one else seemed to collect(hence easier to get a handle on).
My mane collection consists of
-Lord of the Rings (Toybiz figures)
-Matrix (N2Toys/McF/a few Kotobukiyas)
-Spiderman & related characters I grew up with- started with Spider-man Classics-now includes Marvel Select.
-Star Wars Unleashed/Clone Wars Animated
........
that may seem like a lot but my collecting has narrowed considerably!

I try to focus on one thing. ALIENS. (in 6" and 12" scale)
However, if I see something that I just HAVE TO HAVE, then I'd get that too.
I stay away from variants if the only difference is in the color-scheme because that would be like getting 2 of the same thing. (why would one need 2 left feet?)
At the end of the day, I end up with stuff that really interests me, no regrets, and an intact budget. (=no fights with my girl about my spending) ;)

Want to complete sets do cards. Want to collect figures either become a scalper type or a collector & buy what you think looks nice. I prefer to be a collector myself. I used to collect every dumb NFL SP but it got to big of a collection. Now most of them i opened for customs. I really hate the bad paint applications on most of them. So now i try to collect customs i made. I will buy some to collect that i like still. But do not go in this hobby to complete stuff. It will wear off fast which will kill the hobby in the long run. Just buy stuff you really like screw the value concept.

I think I'll just make do with the Heroclix Foom, I've already got. It's better looking anyway and then I'll pick one up on ebay for $100, which is way cheaper than two whole series of those crap figs would be.
I hope Marvel Toys is going to do something with Hasbro about this line.

I have made a decision that i don't want to be completist anymore... I would probably start getting rid of my spawn variants... just keep a normal set. i have too much spawn toys and it is really taking alot of space, start from now i'm going to keep what i really like in spawn series. thanks for all comments to help me make this decision. :)
recently i did buy alot of different toys :) like sideshow, hottoys, mezco...

spawn x, your situation is exactly like mine.
I used to collect spawn like you and complete anything from the line. But since 1 year ago, I started to go to many different direction. I bought anything from hot toys, statue, mezco, neca and playmates.
when i opened my collections, I start to realize that i cant be like this forever. MONEY AND THE SPACE WILL BE AN ISSUE.
you know what i do??? I was in such dilemma like you are now. but i ve decided to GIVE UP MY SPAWN COLLECTION. its hard and i still have the spawn with me now. but i will give it up soon.
why?? i started my collection with spawn and its very hard to give it up but I would like to collect figures based on CLEAR SERIES. i hope you understand what i mean.
for example: I will only collect HOT TOYS predator, mezco hellboy MOVIE (6"), sota sf and any 6" predator
so like mezco hellboy, i wont buy 18" , but stick to 6" movie. you have to FOCUS.
sota sf: i will only buy the characters that appear in sf alpha 3 since that game brought so much memory.
and for hot toys predator: i am sucker on this one, I will always buy any predators they put out. seriously , these are my center of collection. I am willing to lose anything but these.
its hard for me to explain. but if i may make suggestion for you, JUST FOCUS. you have to decide what you really like most.
and one other reason why i wanna give up sapwn, BECAUSE THIS line will never end , it will keep continuing and the design is getting boring to me.
sorry if i cant be much of a help.

wilhal_18, great post! i agreed most of your points... SPAWN will never end... it is pain if i collect all the variants, now i will keep what i really like :D and i suggest you to keep some really nice spawn figures... don't give up the entire line.;) some spawn figures still my FAV!
P.S. Newer HOTTOY PREDATOR ROCKS!!!:spawnskul
look forward to get hellboy 2 movie 18" figure!

I am no where near being a completist. For example, I was at Target the other day and saw a bunch of Marvel Legend figures by Hasbro. I looked through them and only found one worth buying, which was Cyclops since he is one of my faves. I also found some Legendary Heroes figures at Wal-Mart. They had a complete set and some two packs. I ended up only walking out with Marv and the Body Bags and Conan 2 packs. Nothing else compelled me to purchase the rest of the figures, just for the sake of having the whole set. Buy what you like, you will enjoy the hobby a lot more.

You need to weight the satisfaction of having an entire collection of every plastic figure ever invented or the satisfaction of having a functional living situation and money for food every month.

Don't buy figures you don't like just for the sake of buying them. Spend the money on stuff you will like

thanks for all feedbacks... i guess i will still stick to be a full series completist... i still have weird feeling when only 1 or 2 figures are picked from a series. It looks better to have a fullset display together. I will skip entire series or get the whole series in this case... :D, ofcoz, i would skip the variants as well. :o but definitely wont be a entire series completist like a hardcore spawn collectors, hunting down all the varients, different color signature, super chase ...i'm trying to have variety of toys in my collection now rather than just spawn...

Ask your girl about this, for she will give you the most sincere answer. But let me warn you, last time I ask my girl she sworn to skin me alive… either way, as long as you have fun with it, don't forget the basic rules of trading-satisfaction.
my advice, buy those quality figures... avoid toys. if there is still a different to make.

But, yeah, being a completist sucks. What really sucks is when you hate a whole line, but really want the BAF, like the new Hasbro Hulk line? Yeah.
I know what you mean (except it's with the PITT series from Legendary Heroes). Luckily, they were on clearance at $5 a piece ($32 for the lot). PITT alone sells for more than that on e(vil)bay, so I guess it was a good deal even though I really do not like any of the figures from the line.

I used to be able to give the figures that I didn't want to my youngest kid..........
but now that he's almost 15, he says he might be too old for toys~
LOL :p Man you can never be to old ;)

LOL...if i ask my girl about this, i am sure she will say "QUIT TOYS"... :o, but she did say why don't i just keep a few high-end stuff only. now seems the collection is infinitely expanding.

I have actually found that some of the simpler, basic toys are more fun to collect than the high-end statues . I used to be a Transformers completist, but wound up selling things on eBay 2 years later because I never really liked them. Now, I take more time to investigate the figures that are coming out, and read feedback from other collectors before I buy anything. Patience and budgeting, its hard to do at first, but it will make your collection more enjoyable years down the road.

I know this is an ancient thread, but it's relevant to what I'm going through. I like to call myself a general toy collector, and I am(we all are), but the focal point of my collection is Spawn. I strive to be a completionist with my Spawn line, that includes every exclusive or variant I can get my hands around. But I really can't say that I'm a TRUE completionist because I have exceptions, such as, I won't touch the Interlink or NitroRiders series. As much as I "love" my Spawn collection, I like to collect other things as well. As someone said earlier, variety is good. And as ThespawnX pointed out, it gives you another topic to talk about among other collectors. And just recently, thanks to joining this board :p, I've been thinking a great deal about the make-up of my collection: should I continue being a Spawn aficionado or delve into more multi-style collecting?
If you're anything like me, ThespawnX, either choice you make, completist or mixturist, I think you'll be happy with it. Because either one, you'll be fulfilling something you enjoy doing. Completist, you'll have the pleasure of building a "near perfect" collection, and as a mixturist, you'll have the pleasure of building a pantheon of variable toys of interest.
Someone mentioned increasing their income(I think it was this thread). That would be a good idea for anybody, not just a collector. :p But with more money, decisions like this would be whole lot easier to make. Heck, with more money, you could be both if that's what you want. ;)

I only buy what I like. I'm not a sheople who has to buy everything in a line.
It's simple: collect what you like

Don't take this personally friends, but I just have a question that's been nagging me every time I see similar responses such as those.
Are you all implying that a "completionist" has to buy everything in a line or they buy things they don't like? Could it be possible that a person likes every figure in a series, prompting the person to "collect what she/he likes?"
It really isn't all that "simple" if you want to really think about it. Even if you're a "mixturist" it still has it's dilemma. The only way to eliminate the hassles that come with collecting is either don't collect or make more money. But with the latter, you're just going to have the same "problems," but at a more costly level.
What it comes down to is, if you're really deciding whether to be a "completionist" or a "mixturist," you have to do some "real soul searching." You're going to have to make a sacrifice either way. Ultimately, both path can lead to fulfillment, but they also can lead to emptiness. So make sure you keep one or the other, or both, in check, and have some damn fun! ;)

What the hell is up with all these threads lately of people asking what to do with thier collection/ how to collect? No answer we could give them is right or wrong. People need to start thinking more for themselves and decide whats right for them.

Completists who whine that they "have" to get this exclusive or "have" to get that figure bug the heck out of me. Just collect what you want and enjoy it, if you feel you have to track down a figure and don't want to, then it makes no sense. Hobbies are to enjoy.

the conclusion is simple...
1) if i have enough money...i could be completist and mixturist. just get everything i like.
2) if my financial status is okay. i should buy whatever i like ONLY. :) ...but usually that would spend more compare to being a completist focusing on one toy line.
3) if i am a hardcore fans of one toy line, get every variants & every characters in that line. that would actually spend less compare to being a mixturist. becoz you only focus one toy line. and greater satisfaction as well like tablehead. :)
currently i moved from option 3 to option 2...i spent more compare to last time when i only buy spawn figures :) but i found i have more fun to have variety of toys in my collection now.
...sometimes I would think to have different toys in my collection rather than having a variant when i only have limited money, ofcoz, if i have enuff money i should get all the variants as well.:p

I'd NEVER waste money on a fig I don't like, even if its from a series. I usually buy one or two figs from a series only (due to financial constraints). I haven't bought anything recently. Nothing really good has been released. In that case I'd rather buy some older figs like Series 24/25 and so on.
