View Full Version : NHL Playoffs - Who Do You Want In?

I'm looking at the West, and I think I'd like to see Edmonton squeek in (even at the expense of Vancouver or Calgary). I'm willing to wager that the Oilers could do some serious damage in the best of 7 setup. I want them over Nashville for sure.
I'd like to see Washington overtake someone in the East. Ideally Philly, but I'll hang Boston or New York out to dry just as easily. Washington pretty much needs 4 points, and hope that one of those teams loses their last three in regulation (they are currently back by 3 points).
What are you hoping for with the last couple of games happening this week?

I know who I want OUT!!
Buh-Bye Sens!! You are pathetic!! :D Don't let the door hit you from behind on your way out!! :p
Seriously though, in all honesty, who doesn't want the Capitals to get in??
We'd all love to see Ovechkin get his chance at the playoffs and the thought of his level of intensity and enthusiasm in the playoffs is downright scary - when you consider how he is in the regular season the thought of how much more he might crank it up for the playoffs makes you drool in anticipation..........

Agreed.
I'm also partial to the Canucks making the playoffs. Although I don't think they have a team that's capable of going deep.
I'd also like to see Edmonton make it at the expense of Calgary. That would, however, be rather tough.

I'm not a big fan of teams that try to get by on goaltending alone. The Canucks haven't changed a bit from last season. They hinge their hopes far too much on Luongo.
Same goes for Calgary, although Iginla and Phaneuf are amazing.

Calgary has the potential to go very deep in the playoffs even at the #8 seed. I want to see them get in. I'd like the Canucks to get in ahead of Nashville as well. The Oilers can stay out where they belong.
In the East, I don't mind the Capitals getting in, but not at the expense of Boston. I'd like the Habs to play the Bruins because they can beat the Bruins. I don't like the idea of facing the Capitals and potentially having Huet steal that series. That would be beyond frustrating.
I'd like the East to keep its 8 that are currently in.

As long as the Rangers are in, I'm happy, but I would also love to see Washington get in also. It would be great to see Wash vs Pitt (Ovie vs Crosby) !!

Which is why that trade that Gainey made was silly. It makes no sense to make that trade, it's an uneccessary risk to be taking. Did they really need that 2nd round draft pick that badly?
I really was planning on routing for the Habs in these playoffs but now a part of me hopes they don't do well because the thought of hearing Habs fans proclaim that Gainey was a genius for trading away Huet and resting his faith in Price really makes me want to vomit.
I'm already listening to Habs fans all around me here say how brilliant the move was.

The Penguins are 10-1 against the Capitals when Crosby and Ovechkin play. I think I'd take the Penguins in that series.

I'd love to have my Oilers squeak in in the west, but the numbers are against them at this point.
Personally, I hope the Preds and Flames take the last two spots.

Here's what I wanted to see:
West:
#1 Wings vs. #8 Oilers (rematch of 2006, old vs. young)
#2 Sharks vs. #7 Flames (two world class goalies head-to-head)
#3 Wild vs. #6 Stars (current vs. old minnesota)
#4 Ducks vs. #5 Avalanche (another solid match-up)
East:
#1 Habs vs. #8 Bruins (always a good playoff series, despite being 8-0 in favour of the Habs so far)
#2 Pens vs. #7 Flyers (battle of PA)
#3 Caps vs. #6 Sens (Ovie in the playoffs! capital city matchup)
#4 Devils vs. #5 Rangers (need I say more)
just my wishful thinking...

I would like Edmonton in over Nashville or Vancouver. I am going to assume Colorado and Calgary get in.
In the east, I want Philly in. I would like to see Washington in for Carolina or even Boston. I guess we'll find out if this is feasable on Tuesday night.

The Bruins would've had one less team to deal with if they could've disposed with Buffalo but nope...now it'll be down to the wire....

All I really want is to have Calgary solidify their playoff spot. With the remainder on the road and the way they looked last night it won't be easy, that's for sure. I don't really want to see Nashville in the West, so hopefully it's something like this:
Detroit
SJ
Minnesota
Anaheim
Dallas
Calgary
Colorado
Edmonton

bonus fun thoughts: the hockey playoff challenge will be setup soon. one i actually have a legit chance at :D
I think the playoffs are going to be great this year. Outside of Detroit (how do they stay so good?), there doesn't really seem to be a major 'favourite'. Toss-ups are always interesting :D

Ya the playoff challenge should be very interesting this year. There are no clear cut favourites in either Conference in my opinion. Not even Detroit. It's anybody's to win it in both Conferences.

Agh. I hate to agree with you on this. We pretty much only have goaltending right now. We have a sweet defence corp too... When they're healthy.
I know this is not the year we make any noise in the playoffs. IF we get in we'll be bounced in the first round. Second at most.
However, this summer, without huge contracts to Morrison and Naslund weighing us down... We should be able to make some key acquisitions, and make a good run in '09

Only problem is that there isn't much good available on the UFA market this year, unless you are interested in Jaromir "I play hard when I feel like it" Jagr. Marian Hossa is also up for grabs, but he is far from being known as a good playoff performer.
Pretty slim pickings in this years UFA list. With all these ridiculous 6, 7, 8, 12 and 16 year contracts being signed, there's gonna be a lot less activity on the UFA market as we go forward.
Here's a list of what's available:

Nothing too impressive there, mostly role players or aging veterans past their prime.

Funny!! Perhaps true in the past but since the lockout ended what aging veterans have the Leafs signed? Blake is the only one that comes to mind and I wouldn't really call him an aging veteran just yet despite his age of 34, he got a late start on his career. The Leafs are actually letting their young prospects play and develop, unfortunately for them though none of them are super stars, just role players who can contribute, which you do also need in the salary cap world.
