View Full Version : To McFarlane Staff : Fake Spawn 7 matters

Dear McFarlane Staff,

As you know, there are so called Fake/Bootleg Spawn 7 from Spawn series 21 floating around the China and Malaysia market here. I'm writting this to express my concern regarding this matter.

The main purpose of collecting for collector like me is to admire the scultp, color and every detail of the figure by putting it in a display cabinet and won't play with it. One of the thing I found most enjoyable is to display something that is nice, beautiful and RARE. I'm once very proud of owning this Spawn 7 having one display in my cabinet and one MIB just below it. Some even offer a high price for it but I still won't accept it cause that such my precious. This comes to an end with the release of this so called fake Spawn 7. If this figure is so easy to obtain, it really kills my mood.

This is not the first time for such thing to happen. I remember once the is a Spawn series 19 floating around the Malaysian market. I still remember once Lotus is most demanding figure but now you can easily get it from ebay.com.my.

I'm sure this is not a fake item but someone who actually using the original mold to reproduce it because of the high demand. This IMO can't be considered a fake item because there are from the same mold. Same or even better paint job indeed.

What's really makes me dissapointed is that why TMP doesn't take this seriously? What I can see here is that this lowers the figure value ( maybe not in term of price but the rarity of the figure ). This also means that collectors must be extreme careful when purchasing TMP product because there are fake/ bootleg items out there. I can imagine that one day, you may see that Lotus CCX, Urizen, Black Mandy floating around the market.. and also in US-card ( since copying the packaging is not as difficult as copying the figure I guess ). :(

I'm really hope that TMP would look seriously into this matter.

They do it to everybody, especially the Japanese stuff.

The bad thing is they're aping the packaging too, and some of them are really good fakes.

For example, Transformers, there are tons of KO's out there. I'm sure TMP is aware of he problem, but how much can they do to stop it?

there are collectors out there who're pining for reissues cos they're at the mercy of price makers in the secondary market. why should it hurt you that what you have and enjoy is now accessible to others? even more so if you are so sure that they're knock offs?

I wouldn't care as long as i was paying a knock-off price. It matter to some folks though, just like packaging condition matters to a MOC collector.

make sure in future, there will be no one able to steal the mold from factory. but i wonder how they do the paintjob on those KOs if they use the mold to reproduce it? it requires some skills as bk5 mentioned before. ...perhaps someone is able to produce some extra quantities from the factory and TMP didnt realize on that :spawnskul

If you can provide us with more information about the retailers who are offering these up, that would help tremendously. So far I am hearing a tremendous amount of complaints about us not taking care of it, with little or no information about where these are being found.

You want us to try and stop the flood- then throw us a bone.

Also, most bootleg product is made by using the existing product as the basis for the bad product- I doubt somebody has our actual mold that we used- they probably made a new mold off of the original 6" figure.

I liked Joe's response but I'll address yours. If you don't care why should we? Piracy hurts the producer far worse than the consumer. Especially if, as was stated the copies are as well or better done than the originals. I buy your products because I like the quality, and I also like the attitude that I think the company carries of making the fans happy. But there are a lot of people out there that will simply take the cheaper route. You have a brand that garners quite a bit of respect I think. Defend it, protect it. I realize that fly by night producers are hard to pursue, but you can certainly contact Ebay and stop the auctions. I would imagine that your corporate attorneys (if you have them, I don't know) would crap their pants at your tacit support of these items.

I'm pretty new here so if there is some inside thing going on I apologize, and I'm certainly not trying to piss anybody off, but that's just kinda of a crappy answer. I've seen one instance in which Joe was talking "copyright infringement" for some company doing repaints of figs but you guys don't care if someone does a wholesale knock-off?

EDIT: I wrote this before I saw your other response. Apologies.

Look at the close up picture that have been posted in the other thread. In my opinion, they are using your mold. The lines & details, esp. in the cape. are perfect, and the size is not smaller than the original. The only difference is a small change in some of the paint app's.

I'd investigate to see if its coming out of your own factory!

Eveyone here needs to watch the bootlegging show that discovery channel shows every once in a while. The chinese government doesn't care to stop bootleging. If a company complains enough they invite them over for a dog and pony show where they show a few small acts of cracking down and then they send the company reps packing home with a story. They had a chinese official in a filmed interview say that the cost of doing business in china includes the high bootlegging rate. China's production costs are so low even with the added damage the bootleggers might do to a company's profit, china still remains the cheapest place for items to get manufactured.

Bootlegging won't stop until we get off the tit of china.

Actually I have a fear of flying.

And because I am 6' 5" I don't really "fit" in most airplane seats. Every flight I take has me sitting in the aisle seat, with my knees constantly being hit by a passenger, the drink cart, or the kid in front of me.

And of all the red eye flights I have taken, I have slept on only one (due to lack of sleep the night before and it being a 4 hour flight). All the others consist of me with the light on reading comics or drawing and listening to music.

I agree. But the angry side of me doesn't like being responsible for the smelly old man who is asleep next to me when the plane goes down.

A buddy of mine is a certified EMT and actually gets the emergency exit every time he flies (he is 6'6"). He has also kicked somebody out of the emergency exit row because they were asleep during the safety regulations presentation.

Hi Tyler,

You dun have to search in the endless sea to hunt for this guy. I'm pretty sure that this things are coming from the TMP factory at China there because if this is not the original mold, the at first so called fake product won't be so closed to the original one. Searching in the factory itself is far most easier than all over in China I suppose. ;)

Anyway, gald that this had comes to an end and that TMP had already saying that it is an official released. Thanks for that and to those that bother to spend time reading on this.

Everyone on this board has his own way to admire, play or any other way to appreciate their collection. For me, I won't play with it, I won't sell it if I have only one of those figure. What I'll do is display it in a display cabinet. Showing off to my frens or fellow collector's what I have especially the VHTF collection and seeing the rarity and value goes up day by day.

So this fake item really matters me but not to other collectors that bought the figure with the intention of playing with it and dun really care about the value of the item.

That's the difference between you and I...

Let's pretend there's a fig, that's ugly as sin... looks like a blind, autistic 3 year old child with ADD sculpted it... but it's a limited edition, so it's "rare".

I would see it as an ugly piece of crap, and not bother with it.

You seem to be the type that knows it's an ugly piece of crap, but sees it as "rare" so you'd buy it and display it anyways.

You're absolutely rite.

That's why I said there are different types of collector around with their own ways to appreciate the so called toys.

One good example is the Urizen CCX. I would say that it is just a piece of scrap if it's not a CCX. But why do ppl wants it so badly ( maybe not you )? Its all about rarity of the figure. Lotus CCX, its that much much different than the original one? It's just a repaint with bare legs and some extra accessories. What is so special about it? Even some may prefer the original colour scheme but why everyone asking for a re-issue about it? Once again because it is rare. When I said the value goes up day by day.. It does not mean that the value are always monetory value. It the rarity thats count. :)

To each their own I supose.

But if you changed the thing you collect to precious metals ( gold & silver) then you'd KNOW the value isn't likely to go down.

may be i'm the minority who loves the Urizen CCX, even though if it is not CCX, i would get it for sure. I always like TMP monster stuff... this Urizen actually is 8" tall! huge and COOL! ... it is not a scrap...:(
I like the lotus CCX not becoz it is rare. I guess she looks great and special when standing beside the Takeda the Archer ;)

too bad these 2 pieces are too expensive. I would buy MOC becoz i'm a fussy collector. I don't like broken, dusty, missing accessories toys.

I understand how you feel, some collectors will think their satisfaction is from something rare they have. But there will be some other collectors like me who loves to be completist, try to complete all the spawn figures released by TPM, but really don't bother if their value is going down.:D

try collect something you really like and not bcoz of its rarity, i guess you will be more happy with your collection. and appreciate them more...juz my 2cents

I think I'm not the only one that feel satisfy collecting something that is rare.

Sorry for saying that your Urizen is a piece of scrap. It's just an example. :o

I'm not seeing it as an investment. You'll sell it if the value is high for investment but I won't sell my toy if the value double or triple up.

Agreed. Any chance of getting a gold or silver figure from TMP? :D I mean the real one but not the pewter paint such like SDCC Bloodaxe or Raven.

have you had a ccx Urizen in hand ?
It's one of the coolest monster figure done by McF imo, the rarity factor is just there to bother people like me who would love to get another one to repaint. Couldn't care less when an item is highly limited, if not for the fact it prevents me for getting my hands on a cool looking toy .
If I don't like it visually, I don't want it, limited or not.

Bootlegs ... originals, they're all made in China anyway. Who cares?

I'm not sure what TMP is suppose to do about this!
In the media market there is bootlegging out the wooza going on and there's no stopping it, I don't think anyone can stop this, and I highly doubt this is any different.

Personally, I'd buy a bootleg rare item at half price, cause I don't collect for value, I collect cause I want more dust catchers on my shelves.

Agreed, I see people going apesht over something that's "rare" but it's too damn ugly to even THINK about buying.

For instance, the clear variant Necrocop [Spawn Series 31] last year, again people went crazy over it cause there are only a few made ... who cares?
The Necrocop wasn't bad, but I wasn't willing to pay $300 for a single figure, screw that!

The only time I worry about value is when something was just released and everyone knows it'll go up in price later, that's when I worry about saving up and getting it now, rather than paying more later.

But then again, like you said, to each is own, we all collect for different reasons. I collect cause where I grew up action figures were very expensive and I didn't have too many as a child, now I'm going crazy buying them cause I can.

:D
