That was a wild finish, good thing there wasn't a 25 car pile up on the last restart. Wish somebody other then Bifle won but will accept since it wasn't Newman.

The should have thrown out that start and did it again. That was an aweful restart on newman's part. Brake checking the entire field is just stupid.
Boy Mikey and Jeff Green are going to get chewed out in the truck. Wonder if there might be some missed races over this, since nascar was threatening that.

I agree. None of my guys were up front, so I was pulling for Kenny Schrader and when Newman checked up it cost Schrader any chance.

Schrader had absolutely no chance anyways! There is no way he could of held off any of those guys on 4 used up tires! No way at all! Would of been nice to see him win though!

My driver (Jeff Burton) was screwed again by his crew. That guy would be about 4th in points if it weren't for his stinking pit crew. He was running six and some gomer left a lug loose!
How about that Waltrip/Green deal. Crazy or what? Anyone watch Inside Nextel Cup? Should be a lot of fun discussions tomorrow night! :D

I know, but maybe if Kenny could have passed Newman then Newman could have held up the guys with fresh tires long enough to get to the finish :p. Unlikey, but anything is better than seeing the same guys win over and over

It's not just Burton, it's all of RCR. Harvick came in to pit 5th during the last caution and came out 20th :(

I was starting to think Busch had grown up from his early days of being an ***........ no, he still is -
Busch acts up at Darlington, "actions not befitting of a champion": #97-Kurt Busch hit the [inside] wall on the first lap at Darlington Raceway. Then he hit an official with a water bottle, bad-mouthed NASCAR over his radio and ended up in a closed-door meeting with series officials. "His actions were certainly not befitting of a champion,'' NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said after the Dodge Charger 500. "He said things that are not fit for print.'' Busch knew it was going to be a bad night seconds after the race began. He had started 11th, but didn't even get a full lap in before he spun out coming out of the fourth turn and hit the inside retaining wall. He took the #97 Ford into the garage so his crew could make enough repairs for Busch to continue racing. Later in the race, NASCAR said Busch moved into the wrong position on the track under caution. Officials ordered him to stop and get in line where he was supposed to be, but Busch refused. He was sent into the pits for a two-lap penalty, and NASCAR officials took offense to the language he used over the radio. They ordered him to turn his engine off, and he responded my revving it. He also tossed a water bottle out of his window that hit the official in his pit. Busch was then summoned to meet with NASCAR after the race.

That's why they have the best sponsors, and best cars! They always win, and winning equals more sponsorship money to put back into the program!! :D Put Schrader in Jeff Gordon's car, and he'd prolly win, too! Most of the guys at the Nextel Cup level are pretty much equal in talent! There was a time when Michael Waltrip sucked really bad, but he was put in a DEI car, and he's had quite a lot of success ever since! :)

Your missing the point! Had you of followed his Countrytime Lemonade career, you understand what I'm saying! LOL!!! Not sure what you would class as successful in Nascar, but I would have to say winning any races at this level would class you as successful. Back to back Daytona 500 wins! It took Dale Earnhart over 20 years to win that race! At last count, I don't recall Rusty Wallace or Mark Martin ever winning the 500! I would think all 3 of those guys would be classed as successful! I don't even like Waltrip, but I still would have to disagree with your above assesment! :) The car, and the team make the driver, just as much as their talent!

He didn't win the 500 back to back. He won in 01 and 03, and the 03 race was rain shortened. He has won the same amount of races as Morgan Shepherd, in 106 more races. Has has only won 2 career poles, zero with DEI, and none since 1991. He has never finished above 12th in the season standings, and never above 14th with DEI. He has been in 616 races, and has only won 4 times. There has only been one other driver in the history of Nascar to have been in as many races and have less wins than Michael Waltrip.
How ironic that his only wins have came on restrictor plate tracks with undoubtily the best team (DEI) at those tracks at the time.

Sort of like Rusty did to Tony Danza :D?
NEW YORK -- Tony Danza got quite a scare when he and NASCAR star Rusty Wallace were racing go-karts during the taping of a segment for the nationally syndicated "The Tony Danza Show."
http://espn-att.starwave.com/media/other/2005/0509/photo/a_danza_il.jpgIn this image from TV, Tony Danza's go-kart is shown flipping over during the "DayTony 500."
Danza was leading as they entered the final lap Monday morning on West 66th Street, the show said. After Wallace gave Danza's vehicle a little "bump and run," the 54-year-old talk-show host lost control of his go-kart, which flipped over.
"Although slightly worse for wear, Danza escaped with no injuries," the show said in a statement.
Wallace, who rushed to Danza's side after the crash, said, "I thought I killed ya," to which Danza responded, "Yeah ... just before you retire, 'I killed Tony Danza.'"
"I know you're tough, but that [was] ridiculous, man!" Wallace was quoted as saying.
The "DayTony 500" segment aired on Monday's show.

Who wants to test your betting skills? Pro-Line is a betting outlet here in Canada, and a short while back they added Nascar to the mix! They have a weekly pool where you bet $5, and pick 10 drivers. You only have to pick the highest finisher of each group of 2, and there are 10 groups! Last week 10/10 won $9,079.50!! Try your luck! Here's my picks for Richmond! I only got 4/10 last week! :o (eg. If Johnson finishes 6th, Gordon has to finish 5th or higher)
This weeks choices are:
1. Jimmy Johnson vs Jeff Gordon
2. Dale Jr vs Ryan Newman
3. Tony Stewart vs Kurt Busch
4. Jeremy Mayfield vs Greg Biffle
5. Mark Martin vs Matt Kenseth
6. Jamie McMurray vs Kevin Harvick
7. Ricky Rudd vs Kasey Kahne

I personally think that 1 driver gets in from voting has got to go. I felt that Truex didnt deserve to be in the All-Star event. He hasnt even 5 Winston cup starts under his belt, but since he is Dale Jr's teammate he gets into the race. The spot should have gone to someone that actually races full time. They should go back to doing the Open in two races. The main open then the shootout to get the last transfer spot.
I was rooting for Vickers, not a huge fan of him spinning Bliss, but happy to see he made it into the All-Star race to finish 3rd. Not an aweful Hendrick day, 3-4-5. Jeff had a pretty good comeback from pitting after the Newman wreck to finish 4th.
The track doesnt look too racing anymore. It is basically everyone fighting for the middle lane in 1 and 2 and the bottom in 3 and 4

Kimi Raikkonen and McLaren have another dominating run at Monaco. He took the win after leading every lap. He has now moved up to 2nd in the driver points and McLaren moved up to 2nd in the constructors points. Montoya helped that by finishing 5th from starting on the last row of the grid.
If anyone wants to watch Danica Patrick will be on David Letterman tonight. I hope she has a good run at Indy next sunday.
On the Harvick subject. I dont care for him at all. He needs to think before he acts and speaks. He is always doing or saying something stupid. That is what gets him in trouble. Going after Nemechek before he even knew what happened wasnt the smartest thing. Kevin really did this to himself. As they said on wind tunnel tonight, Tony causes the wreck and Harvick looks like the bad guy in the whole deal.

What?!?!?
He DID win the Busch Championship in commanding fashion last year. I would like to think that would earn him a spot alot quicker than someone like Schrader last year who has done nothing to deserve that spot other than be on the weekly kiss-up to Nascar show 'Inside Nextel Cup'.

For Schrader at least he as earned his dues in the Cup series, He has won races. I could see if he was running the full Cup season but not a race here and there. Everyone knows the only reason he got in that race is because he is Dale Jr's teammate. It has be come the sexist driver competion to get into the all star event, how is that racing?

Qualifying for the Coke 600 is Thursday at 7 p.m., hope Jr. keeps sucking with the new crew chief.
From Jayski.com
Effective immediately, Steve Hmiel will serve as interim crew chief on the #8 Budweiser Chevrolet driven by Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series, replacing Pete Rondeau. Richie Gilmore, Vice President of Motorsports at Dale Earnhardt Inc. stated, "We are capable of consistently winning and are focused on that as a company. We are going to concentrate our efforts on improved results with the number 8 car." Steve Hmiel, Technical Director at Dale Earnhardt Inc., will replace Rondeau commencing with this weekend's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. "Pete is a valuable asset and has brought a number of innovations to our organization. He will continue to do that in a different capacity and we're happy that Pete is so strongly dedicated to Dale Earnhardt Incorporated and its success," Gilmore said. He concluded, "We have high expectations of how our teams are to perform and we will utilize every resource we have to win races. Our primary objective is to get the 8 and the 15 solidly into the Chase for the Championship and as a company, we're focusing everything we have at that goal."

You have to seperate "All-Star" from "person I like". I like Truex Jr as well, but would I consider him a Nextel Cup All-Star, no. He is a hell of a racer, evident in that he is the reigning busch series champ and has 2 wins this year, but different series, different standards.

Yeah they can be wrong. It all depends on who you ask. The fans shouldnt really be allowed to vote for outcomes that effect races. The Most Popular Driver award has even become a joke now. If there was a way to insure that each person voted once, I can see it, but now people just stuff the box by voting over and over again.

I heard tonight on ESPN radio that Dale Jr, and Tony Jr, were not getting along very well at the end of last season, and at times, even at the last race at Homestead, weren't even speaking to each other! I guess that was why they changed crew chiefs! I never knew that till now! I'm sure it was no secret! Anyways, who's gonna take over the job? Hmiel, or will someone else leave a team??? Hmmmm! Today I went to community day for the Indy 500 - free autos. Well I was hoping to get a bunch , but the lines were ridiculous.
I got there about 20 minutes late and got in the Helio and Hornish line - and they cut it off about 20 people in front of me after waiting for about 30 minutes. So I headed over to the Rahal/Letterman team line to get Danica - and waited 1hr and then they tried to cut the line off about 5 people in front of me. LOL!... OH HELL NO... I got a little mad - under control but mad. We convinced the guy to let us stay in line - JUST IN CASE... we raised enough of a fuss that the Team Reps brought signed cards from each person on the team and passed them out Just in Case. When I got up there - Danica was taking a bit (she was on the end) - so Vitor said let some more in (since he was just sitting there) - so we got to go up, so I grabbed a few more Vitor signed things, and Brack and Rice, and Danica was pissed - yelled at the guard - THATS IT - NO MORE. But I got my little Die-Cast signed and picked up one of the unsigned cards. Well she was posing for some pics with some VIPS's behind her, I stuck the unsigned card out and asked if she would sign it - she scowled and said - didn't you get one that they passed out - while signing the one I handed her - so I just didn't say anything and got my card and left :)

I did. I felt kind of stupid really, right befor the show started, I was like why the hell would she be on Letterman. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks, DUH, he is part owner of her car. Rahal and Letterman have gotten me in their camp. They have Dancia and now the bring Kenny back, now they just need to use a Toyota engine and it would be all good. Oh well I guess I will have to support Honda like I do McLaren in F1. I hated McLaren then they go out and sign my driver Kimi Raikkonen, I was then kind of forced to go with McLaren at that point.

I missed the beginning of the F1 race but heard Mark Webber got taken out. Man that ending was wild with Kimi Raikkonen flat spotting his right front and Alonso pumping out fast laps. Then on the last lap Raikkonen's right front suspension breaks and Alonso wins.
Let's hope the nascar race has a wild finsih like the F1 race.

Well I havent had a great racing day so far. My favorite F1 drivers have a bad day. Webber takes himself out in the first turn of the race. Then Raikkonen loses his suspension on the last lap from the lead.
Then at Indy Kenny Brack goes out early with suspension issues. On the plus side Danica had a good run, first laps lead by a women and had a good shot at winning the race to finish 4th.
Now hopefully the Cup race will be better for my driver. That didnt start out well when the piece of track went through his grill. At least he is still in the race.

Well there is no more Shane Hmiel. I believe this isnt the first time he has failed a nascar drug test. This kid has some real issues, on and off the track.
Hmiel kicked out of Dover? UPDATE - OFFICIAL, fails drug test: Been told from folks at the track that #32-Shane Hmiel was was escorted out Dover International Speedway after a privite meeting in the NASCAR trailer. Supposedly all reports have Hmeil failing a randon dug test. Hmeil was 2nd fastest in practice today. Being told Ron Hornaday will drive the #32 car at Dover.
NASCAR STATEMENT: NASCAR has suspended driver Shane Hmiel indefinitely, for violation of the sanctioning body's substance abuse policy. NASCAR officials said Thursday that Hmiel was tested for banned substances after NASCAR Busch Series qualifying at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C. The results of the test were positive, violating Section 12-4-A (actions detrimental to stock car racing) and Section 12-4-E (violation of the NASCAR Substance Abuse Policy) of the 2005 NASCAR rule book. Hmiel is 14th in the current NASCAR Busch Series driver championship standings.(NASCAR PR)(6-2-2005)
x90mattman
06-02-2005, 09:20 PM
Yea, he was suspended for 4 months at the end of 2003. I was a Hmiel fan, but not anymore. I hope that Nascar bans him for life. He has been given an opportunity of a lifetime twice, and has screwed himself both times. I think that letting him back a 3rd time sends a bad image for the sport. I don't want Nascar to turn into the other big sports with speculation on who's doping and who's not. Besides that, if I was in one of the 43 cars on any given saturday I sure as hell wouldn't want to have worry about if the guy drafting with me at 190 mph is high or not.
I'm also surprised that nobody has really brought up the fact that he drove in last weeks race with drugs in his system. I'm not saying I think he was high while driving, but at the same time if they found drugs in his system how do we know he wasn't? Good thing he wrecked himself and not anybody else last week.
R. Giles
06-02-2005, 09:47 PM
Exactly I thought maybe he learned the first time he was kicked out. I hope Nascar stays tough and keeps him out in the upper divisions. You can always allow him in the weekly racing series like Winston West or something like that. But if Nascar thinks they can allow him back in the upper division they would probably have alot of heat coming from the driver's.

Since Avs asked first, the extra Danica is for him - PM me your addy please
As usual I picked up some extra 5x7 team card things for the guys on the board and have them for whomever wants them

Looks like with the new gear rule that nascar put in place this year. It will mean that there wont be any shifting in the corners at Pocono this weekend. I dont know how this will effect the racing, but Jeff Gordon doesnt like it. He says it will just cause single file racing.
Why do they really have this rule anyway? I would think it would make better racing with having a gear that would better suit the driving style of that driver. Instead of making an IROC type series.

Why do they really have this rule anyway?
If memory serves correct, its part of Nascar's "lets help the teams spend less money" or the real thing "lets force the teams to spend money on something else" cause we all know if you have a 5 mil budget, your not, not going to spend that money to try and win. Anyways, nascar thinks that if they limit the gears, that teams will spend less money by not trying to make engines that top out over 10,000rpm's. And as you guys said, Pocano is a good example as Newman has run over 9,000rpm's there in the past. But we all know that if you can't spend money on your engines, you'll dump that money somewhere else to try and be competitive.

Well it might be a tough weekend. F1 race and Nascar race are about the same time this week. It will be a tough one as to who to watch.
At least Sonoma and the USGP are on different weekends, since I really want to watch both.

Yeah, a whole category called "Nascar Geography." They would name a track and the contestants would have to name the state the track was in. $200 was Daytona, $400 was Infineon, $600 was Nazareth, $800 was Talladega, and $1,000 was Watkins Glen.

Thats too bad, that would have been $3000 for me. Did they actually get the answers right?

The people that go on Jeopardy have smarts in areas that nobody cares about. That just proves that even the person who thinks their smart doesn't know geography, just like alot of americans.

No don't get it but nice to hear it is good coverage. Did anybody see the IRL race with the split screen commercial break. I know that TNT did it once and would like to see it continue. Cause if they take a break with racing going on you don't miss anything.

Not likely for Nascar. I saw the first IRL race of the season and liked that too, but the Fox guys have said it won't work because you have to have sponsers agree ahead of time to let there commercial be ran with the race still playing, which most have been unresponsive too.
Personally, I think it was just a play by the IRL to try to bring in more viewers. I also liked that the first race was broadcast on one channel as the regular broadcast and ESPN2 with only using in-car cams. Works well when you have to tv sets in your living room :D . Now if I could only scrounge up the change for Nascar InDemand...

If I was a sponsor I would agree to it. When Nascar coverage goes to commercial I switch the channel to something else. With this you get people to stay and see or hear the commercial plus get the racing action.
Just my take but too everybody posting on this thread is smarter then anybody running nascar or the sponsor execs.

That F1 coverage sucked so bad. CBS needs some new announcers. I just hate Ralph Shaheen. I swear the guy knows nothing about any form of racing and just makes things up to sound good. He was just spitting out stuff today that never even happened. Like at the end when he said that Ferrari got a 1-2 finish, yet my boy Kimi Raikkonen won the race. Wouldnt a 1-2 finish mean you finished first and second, not second and third. I dont know how this guy still has a job.
Derek Daily at least knows something, but I can only handle so much of him. He is worse than Darrell Waltrip in the talking department. He just doesnt know how to stop talking. He made some pretty big errors in the commentary also today. It was like neither of them had any idea on what was actually going on in the race. I cant wait for Speed to get the coverage back. We need our David Hobbs, Steve Matchett, and Bob Varsha fix.

Yeah the coverage sucked pretty badly. At least the race was exciting with Fisi losing hydraullic pressure and Alonso smacking the wall. Then Montoya getting excluded from the race after leaving the pits on red. Happy Kimi won but was nervous with 4 laps to go and Schumi closing in.

I don't really mind the commercial breaks, but I just wish they would cut back when something happens. I hate it when they go to a commercial under green and come back to show you the leaders pitting under caution. Then sometimes they don't even get back in time to show the pit stops.

I was thinking the same thing. It seems like they could have expidited the whole thing so we could have had the restart earlier, maybe then we could have actually had a green finish.

I just wish that after Bobby Labonte wrecked the had another green-white go. I don't think the Newman should of counted since Nascar blew that crap with 7 caution laps. With that Carl Edwards probably wouldn't of won and I would be happy.

I understand that Nascar only wants to do 1 GWC, but I wouldn't count the first restart as a GWC since the caution came out with 7 to go. Anyone know what happened to Bobby? Fox never showed his wreck.
If I was Roger Penske I'd fire Newman's crew chief Matt Borland immediately.
2 or 3 weeks ago they were in the exact same position (in 7th place coming into their last pit stop). Instead of taking tires they took gas only, and ended up finishing something like 14th.
fast forward to today and they were in the exact same position (7th) came into pits and took gas only again! Don't these morons ever learn? Newman already blew a tire earlier in the race. 7 laps to go and he blows a tire because they didn't take any on the last pit stop, doesn't finish the race and ends up 34th.
I'm no expert, but even I can see by now that if you don't take any tires on your last pit stop you will finish 5-10 spots lower (or worse) than if you do take tires.
I lost major points in the pool this weeks because of that idiot.

I have no idea what happened with Bobby, I don't think they ever showed a replay. I'm guessing here that he might of gotten tagged going into the turn because of a pile of cars after the wreck in turn 1.

Goodyear called to the trailer: Goodyear officials were called to the NASCAR trailer after 11 drivers blew out a total of 22 left front tires Sunday at Pocono. Goodyear product manager Rick Heinrich said Goodyear engineers noticed several setups that "were very abusive to the left front outside shoulder" of the tires and that low air pressure could have compounded the problem. "It's never the tires' fault, is it?" says crew chief Fatback McSwain, whose driver, Ricky Rudd, was the victim of six cut tires.(Sporting News (http://www.sportingnews.com/experts/lee-spencer/20050612.html))
AND Goodyear field manager Rick Heinrich blamed most of the problems on a combination of overly-aggressive chassis setups and running over the rough rumble-strip curbing at the inside edge of the tunnel turn.(Winston Salem Journal (http://www.journalnow.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=WSJ%2FMGArticle%2FWSJ_BasicArticle&c=MGArticle&cid=1031783253012&path=%21sports&s=1037645509200))
I thought this was pretty funny. I have heard of drivers, but never Tire Manufacture Officials. I think this has to be a first. I hope this is the end of Goodyear in nascar. 22 blown tires is just a joke. I guess they learned their lesson by testing this tire at Las Vegas instead of Pocono. What were they thinking?

Barring an unexpected snag, NASCAR's top series will undergo another name change, beginning with the 2007 season. The company created by the merger of Sprint and Nextel is expected to take on the name Sprint. And the name of what is now known as the Nextel Cup Series will also change to the Sprint Cup Series, ThatsRacin.com has learned.
